you have done puppies all around the world so much justice by not sugar coating the puppy phase! I love my border collie willow. She’s such a lovely and well rounded adult dog but the puppy phase was NOT fun for me. It was stressful. But it had to be done methodically and no matter how many times I returned home (may or may not have had a quick cry in the bathroom) the next day we had to do it all again. Movies in particular are guilty of glorifying the puppy stage but to everyone out there, if the puppy stage was stressful for you and may or may not have included some tears then chances are you were doing things right! Or at least trying your very best. Good on you for being so honest about your experience.
I always say I loved her from the start but it took me months to actually LIKE her. It’s hard to like something that causes you physical pain and is making you cry. But just like that it’s a year later and we survived it 🥹 The days I spent hiding in my car not wanting to go back in the house yet because I wanted a break from her, now I can’t get back home quick enough
My Weimaraner is turning 14 in September, so many ups and downs throughout his life and every life stage comes with a new challenge and a new joy. Wouldnt trade him for the world though.
Thank you for being honest! Just because we love our dogs, and they are amazing, it doesn't mean they aren't a struggle- especially in the puppy and adolescent stage. I always remind myself not to doubt myself or feel embarrassed when my dog is just being a dog- they aren't perfect little machines they are their own personalities and have their own ups and downs. With our ridgeback we saw him become an amazing level-headed boy at 2.5 years and new all our work went so well

River is crate trained so she’s either with me when we’re out or she’s in her crate. I have a camera in her crate though and Hubble does come and sit near her sometimes 🥹
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are so so so pretty and smart! I love her, but you're absolutely right about the puppy phase. It can be soo stressful!

It's good you're being honest about this, too many people sugar coat what it's really like to have a puppy, and truth is, they can be absolute turds 😂 but we wouldn't be without them. As for SD/AD and certain breeds, so much of it can come down to genetics, personality and training. I know someone who uses a wheelchair and has a large labrador AD, and he dragged her across a main road to meet my dog 😳 so people may recommend labradors but it doesn't always work out 🙈

1 year is still a puppy, she's definitely still not mature and still has a lot to learn! :) A lot of people will compare their dog to other dogs they see online or other dogs they see about, especially to dogs of their own age. This is really a bad thing to do because every dog is different and every breed is different. A Border Collie is not a Labrador and a Labrador is not a Duck Troller. I am a professional dog trainer and after years of having JRT and a Collie I wanted a challenge; so I picked a Whippet (he's around the same age as River :) ). I did my research and thought I knew exactly what I was getting into...I had worked with the breed multiple times in rescue, so thought I knew....BUT despite all that I found that my pup was the hardest pup and dog I have ever had to train. Whippets are bred to be independent and do not have the desire to want to "work" for their human and my boy REALLY didn't want to at first. He was a snuggle monster but he really had no interest in wanting to focus on me and after a few seconds of "omg mum has food" or "OMG toy" he was done and gone to sniff the grass. For a while I genuinely thought I had made a huge mistake but I started small and just made training into small games, gradually over time we built focus and he eventually started learning...Although it took 2 months to learn "sit" and "down" because after 1-2 reps he was done. His teenage phase was genuinely the worse I have known; all the work we put in was gone and it was back to re-training him to do simple things like focus and "sit" etc. He's not the best in his training class but our work has really payed off because after starting at our new club he accidentally completed his Bronze after 2 lessons and was the youngest to pass, we are now doing our Silver. He is pretty decent in that. We are also doing agility, as I really want to get back into competing in agility,. and focus is something we are learning as he bombs off to play with the other dogs BUT my trainer is great and we are getting though it. .... Hope you read this and it helps. But honestly; River is a pup and you have chosen a challenge to train. Embrace that and don't hate it. It's something to bring you both together. :)
i think you would've had issues with any dog you got, they just would've been different issues. We used to own a labrador that was for sale after failing the tests to be a guide dog. Not all dogs of a certain breed are suitable for what they were specifically bred for, because they're all individual personalities

It’s not the worst but it definitely seemed to gather more ammonia when I just had that lid, so just keep an eye on the smell, you may have to spot clean / deep clean more 🙂
As a person also training my assistance dog, don't beat yourself up about doing the 'boring' training. This training helps them SO MUCH when they are older. For example, my dog wouldn't be able to fetch my phone when it rings without a buttload of foundations. I'm so glad you're speaking honestly, I will admit I was slightly jealous of the training you have already achieved. I am also working on dog over-arousoul - it's a pain!
I feel the same way with my shepherd, its an absolute nightmare still and I always tell people the truth, that they aren’t good family dogs (especially with small children, my dog herds them)

@@Emiology I think tollers and Aussies are just about the same level of difficulty. I happen to unfortunately have a dog which is dog aggressive and way too anxious to be an assistance dog- I had to wash her. She’s rather difficult to train, and even more so to simply walk outside. And I can’t muzzle her because every muzzle I’ve tried she gets off. So…. I’m not too sure I’d ever suggest them with a clear conscience without also telling somebody the cons
17 week old Toller parent here. HELP ME!!!! Just kidding. All puppies are cute and suck. This boy is going to be amazing. Learns as fast as a German Shepard.
Nope if anything it got worse for a while 😅 turns out she had underlying pain though that we are still trying to identify which was causing her behaviour
I have a Toller as my first dog, a girl, and i would never have another breed. They are fantastic. Perfect family dog, i have kids and also a cat and they get together so well. You have such a wonderful dog and you don't appreciate her. Such a shame.

Please don't feel behind! A year old dog is still such a baby and it is totally fine to not be doing in depth service dog training at this age. She is a beautiful girl and you clearly are doing a wonderful job with her.
HIII I LOVE YOUR animals so much! You inspired me to get mice! I do have a question though. What should I do two of my females mice don’t get along but they both get along with my other? I’m not sure if I should separate them because then one would have to be alone
Have you tried reintroducing them as if they’ve never met before? Unfortunately if they still won’t get along sometimes mice don’t always like every mouse you try to house them with, you would have to separate them but then get the lone one a new friend / friends. I’d put whichever one is the biggest problem and starts the fights with the one you already have that you know they’ll get along with and get a new friend for the other one

Looks calm there 😂 I’d be careful or check with trainer if there’s something specific to him on not exposing him to things you don’t want him to be reactive or excited about beyond your control. Typically the opposite is true; once it’s no longer novel, it’s less exciting. I’ve seen it in my 1st dog and already is my 3 month puppy. As an extreme example some gundog trainers will work to having dog sit calm with a dozen game birds milling about within feet of the dog.
My rescue pit/heeler/idk what else is a very hard dog to train, he kind of has doggy ADHD because he never had the information in his earlier stage, but he Is an amazing dog, he still has things to improve on such as new other dogs on walks as well as people. I also have a 6-year dog who is 29.7% Pomeranian, 25.3% Boston Terrier, 14.8% Supermutt, 14.7% Chihuahua, 8.2% Dachshund, + 7.3% Toy Fox Terrier And she is perfect. She has been blind since 1, because of a vaccine injury, but she is so smart, loves learning new things, and catches on to EVERYTHING. Not to mention my other 2, 1 is a chihuahua and she is super smart but was a hoarder rescue, so she isn't perfect either. My 40% chow and 60% German shepherd has needed very little training and is off-leash around my house, she just doesn't get brought anywhere cause she is older and has a bit of anxiety. i am looking into a shepherd, whippet, lab, etc, mixed with a border collie as a sports dog, but I really can't decide 🙃 Phew, long comment but thought I would share. It absolutely is so important to be completely honest with dog training!

Such a good age 🥹 My Dalmatian made it to 14 and she was the biggest pain in the ass but it made her the best dog
She’s gorgeous and she matches her brother perfectly, two lovely red coats. That little pink nose is adorable too.
They ended up having almost the same face markings too 🥹
