This past year I homeschooled my two boys ages 14 and 10. Finding a book that they both loved was really hard. I have my master’s in Reading and Language Art so books are really my thing. I combed websites and read reviews and polled my kids. There were a few that stood out this year. One, they loved the Christmas book we all read on Audible called, The boy called Christmas. They wanted to keep going and going. It really was a fun book even for my 14 year old. While we were studying the American Revolution we read the book Woods Runner by Gary Paulson. Both both really enjoyed the book. Lastly, my 10 year old received all of the Guts and Glory books for his birthday and really wanted to read them. So I designed curriculum around them. We read Guts and Glory: The American Revolution, World War II, and The Vikings. My boys enjoyed all of those books and learned a lot in the process. They would have read more if more were written.
Loving book series and UBAM means I have to recommend Vlad the World's Worst Vampire, Hotel Flamingo and Polly and Buster (although I feel I've seen this one on your shelf in another video). My daughter loved Vlad so much that she wanted to start the series over the same night we finished the last book! These are all fun read-a-louds for me too and I never wanted to miss any of the story if dad read to her before bed. We are currently reading the Billie B Mystery series and next UBAM series on my list is the new(ish) Freddie's mystery books. We're starting your Waldock Wizard's curriculum this year for 2nd grade homeschool and I'm excited to get reading those. We're also going to do your Traveling curricula and my list of books (especially series) has grown so much after looking over all of your recommended resources and watching your book hauls. Even with utilizing our local libraries so much we've gone book buying crazy this month and hubs says we'll need to add an addition just for our own personal library hahahaha.
My son has absolutely LOVED The Virgina Mystery Series. The only one we haven't read yet is the most recent one out. Another one of his favorites are the old Wally McDoogle books.
How did I not know about the Merlin Mission series?? My young readers have loved Magic Tree House 😊 Thanks for sharing, Jessica...so many of our favourites here, too!
We love TumTum and Nutmeg books. There are two books, each have 3 stories in them. One I always recommend because it's simple, sweet and fun little mouse adventures.
We just found out about the Zoey &Sassafras books a week or so ago & put the first one you showed on hold at the library. We just picked it up this week & my almost 8 year old is so excited to start.
I so wish I could take part in this but only have a blog and not a RUclips channel. We love Roald Dahl here, and we also love Tom Fletcher books (not sure if they are big in America). My all time favourite is Wizard of Oz and I'm hoping to get through the whole series with mine
We just finished reading the first book in the How to Train Your Dragon series, and my kids loved it. We also loved Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Thanks for this video--- it's nice to have some new book ideas!
We loved the BFG too. We just finished The Whipping Boy, and are now reading the Trumpet of the Swan. This summer we are going to finish the last few Little House books, these are probably our most favorite.
Thanks for all the tips! my daughter is just 5 but I saved a lot for the future! I highly recommend "Inkheart" by Cornelia Funke, which is a Triologie. Its from my own childhood/youth. WONDERFUL!
We recently read Adventures with Waffles by Maria Parr and then had a waffle party, so we loved that. We have been reading through The Kingdom of Wrenly books and love those.
We love the Narnia series, and Frank Peretti’s Cooper Kids series!! Our daughter enjoys the Nancy Clancy, Zooey & Sassafras series, our son loves the Bad Guys, Hardy Boys, and Imagination Station series. And they’ve both loved Hey Jack! and Billie B Brown Mysteries sets.
Try the Nevermoor series, green glass house series, Sophie Anderson books, the train to impossible places series, the hatmakers, the house at the edge of magic, the ghost garden, Amari and the night brothers,
We love some of these you mentioned and have added others to our list. Some other series we really love are: Sophie Mouse, Heartwood Hotel, The Vanderbeekers, Clementine (by Sara Pennypacker)
My husband is currently reading The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, to our girls at bedtime. My oldest is reading the Sophie mouse series on her own, and we just started Igraine the Brave for our daytime read aloud!
I love all of these suggestions! I can't get on the Dahl bandwagon- I'm not sure why 🙈 But I still think this is a great list! We've read most of the Magic Treehouse series, some multiple times. We are going to be starting Bear Grylls soon to go with Survival School!
My kids love Harry Potter, Little House, Percy Jackson, Land of Story, Wings of Fire, and Ramona (I will never forget them giggling and reading it aloud while busting out laughing!)
Great selections! I have a few new series to add to our list, thank you! The final book in The Castle Glower series has a description that starts, "This bestselling series comes to a rousing conclusion as Celie and her family set sail on a ship made from their beloved Castle!" So, I guess that is the end!
When mine were a tad younger we liked the spiderwick chronicles. My oldest (12) just blew they keeper of the lost cities. She’s obsessed. It’s about elves but has that Harry Potter feel for pre-teens. One to maybe note for later.

BFG is a classic! That is the only book I remember from elementary school. 🤭 I can't wait to share it with the kiddos when they get a tad bit older.
I loved The BFG back in the day! A series I loved reading when I was in elementary school was The Underland Chronicles
The BFG is hilarious! I remember our fifth grade teacher reading it to us and we were all rolling on the floor laughing....

Do the Zoey and Sassafras books need to be read in order? I know the first one needs to be read first, but does it matter after that?
I got so many great ideas! Thanks so much :) Did you watch the “tale of Despereaux” movie?
We are reading 20,000 leagues under the sea, Wizard of Oz, and the Little House on the Prarie books
