@@sean8102 It's awesome mate, I used Audacity to rip it, boosted the volume and saved it in 24bit FLAC, play it almost every day since lol need to get the whole gig done when I get time.
To get your head around how how big The Verve were in the UK that time. I remembering listening to this whole concert live on BBC Radio 1. Then that night BBC TV showed most of the gig on BBC 2 like it was Match of the Day or something.
And they butchered the ending. It's only now 25 years later I know they played the full ending to Come On. 13 year old me would be pleased to finally see it.
Yep and just 4 years prior Richard Ashcroft was doing his best Mick Jagger impression and lead guitarist dressed as Kurt Cobain. Now they are dressed all ninetyfied nicking samples to boot. Proper overrated band.
Thousands of young kids grew up playing rock and roll in a friends basement or garage. Out of all those bands we got bands like The Verve, Oasis, Radiohead and so many others. I wish someone would have told me this era would end in the early 2000's. What an amazing time to be growing up.
And now we are left with Richard casting of these band mates he created so much great music with as just session musicians and releasing bontempi versions of these songs. How the mighty have fallen..
I shouted ‘Who the fuck is Mick Jagger!?’ at this gig (cos I had a poster of Ashcroft wearing a T shirt that said this… ) and he had a go at me from the stage. Fuckin surreal and I wanted the ground to swallow me up at the time… but it’s made a good story for the last 25 years 😂
@@heyya99 something like: ‘It’s not about that, it’s about the music. This is the best night of my life, I’m not having some cunt in the crowd ruining it for me… Not my finest moment… my mate had the recording and you could hear the crowd booing me
Off to see Richard in 2 weeks at Tramlines in Sheffield. The greatest front man/ vocalist of our generation and beyond. But McCabe and Jones are next level. Gonna be sad if we never get them all back together again. Faultless band!!!!
I remember driving home from a camping trip at the Lakes and my dad bought the Urban Hymns cassette and we listened to it a few times on the 2 hour+ drive home. He was born in '49 but passed on to me the Who, Stones, Small Faces etc. Funnily enough he also gave me the Verve. Ace.
Urban Hymns was on repeat for me for quite a few months when it came out; got me through a very difficult end to a relationship. So glad I did see these boys live. Dysfunctional but proper brilliant.
As I grew up listening to The Bee Gees, Alan Parsons Project, Carole King, America, Beatles, Kansas, a basic classical music collection from Deutsche Gramophon, Roberto Carlos, Vangelis, etc... and I consider myself lucky for that, Undoubtely I'd show The Verve to my children, If I had.
Was there, blusey windy... Nick had cold hands out there on a boggy Northern Sunday afternoon.. what a day out.. everybody who was anybody in Mancland was there..
One of the greatest gigs by any band ever hands down. The Verve were easily one of the best bands Britain ever produced. Not going to lie it seriously annoyed me that people assumed Urban Hyms was The Verves first album. They were superb from A Storm in Heaven and onwards.
Probably wouldn't want to go sleeping in the bus shelter these days Sophie but that aside you watched history in the making,so sad what has happened to the band .
Proud to be a Wiganer watching this !!! Them were the days when music had a beat made by instruments rather than electronic noise these days…. I’m a luck man because tha drugs don’t work….
Was only a 16-year-old at the time and while being a massive Oasis fan didn't quite get The Verve, apart from their most famous, catchy pop singles at the time. Thank God I tried out A Storm in Heaven and Northern Soul a few years later!! Gutted to have missed them as a live band when I didn't appreciate them. Thank the Lord for RUclips, this is just awesome, as well as many other gigs from earlier on in the 90's that are on RUclips. Groove, lyrics, melody, guitar sounds, and humanity. Up there as one of the best English groups ever musically. Fucking love it!
I only heard and remember bittersweet symphony being really popular for a bit one summer growing up. But I was 8 at the time and live in the US. Anyway. Fast forward to me when I'm like 21 or 22. I discover the verve. Through Marley and me of all things lol. Just ended up watching that with my girlfriend at the time thankfully. As for being gutted that I know there is basically zero chance I will ever see them live in person . God I couldn't agree more man.
First album I was turned on to was A Storm in Heaven in my teen years early mid 90s. The Verve was set apart to me. I felt that they had harnessed psychedelic rock for our generation as pinkfloyd did I. The 70's. Soooo many trips with friends and the Verve playing as the soundtrack.
I was born in 94 but brought up round a lot of this music. For me, The Verve + The Charlatans are both criminally underrated bands from this era, two of the very best
I had the absolute pleasure of being there, being from Wigan and have the biggest band on the scene at that time to come home and play to a sell out was pure magic and truly unforgettable. Brilliant live band ❤❤❤
V feasts were brilliant. Was there to see RPA circa 2004 and how he stayed on to listen to the crowd sing a medley of tracks instead of Oasis (who couldn’t attend).
Complete with "Don't buy Vauxhall cars they're shit!" from Richard which was mysteriously edited out of the official release (Urban Hymns superdeluxe)!
Watched the verve in 1998 at Haigh Hall with my family from 8 years old to now. I’ve listened to many bands over the years Led Zeppelin, Oasis, The Beatles nothing hits me as much as this. May be biased as I am from Wigan but we will never know
As someone who is a McCabe fan in particular, just gotta say. God damn the performance of The Rolling People 21:50 is a treat. And the version of History at 1:15:44 is one of the best versions IMO, love the sound of Nick's guitar on that version. Also really like this performance of Weeping Willow at 30:38
I've seen them play many times and I have to say that this gig was as near to perfect as you will hear. Velvet Morning and History being the stand out tracks in my opinion, with Rolling People coming in as a close third place. Amazing big sounds!!!! This was them at their peak
I was about to leave the same comment. He is legions above most guitar players in this sort of band that just play chords. Really good blues/rock guitar player
As a U.S. fan, I just "discovered" this band in the last year or two and am still addicted to the deluxe version of Urban Hymns, with a recording of this performance on disc two. Was never a huge fan of live albums but this recording just seems to catch a magical evening when they were at their peak. I only knew them for Bittersweet Symphony, but they were so much more than that.
I was just looking through youtube to see if there was any footage of this concert. I was there, Beck was electric but The Verve were unworldly. Best concert I ever attended, the vibe in the crowd was stellar.
Bitter sweet sympathy was the Verve’s it hurts my soul when the drama went down oh so dirty and hurtful but it worked out out to our awesome Verve!! The you verve Richard! This song will be a classic FOREVER!!
If aliens ever do land and ask what human beings are capable of.. they should be directed to this video! Richard Ashcroft soars like he’s singing from the top of a mountain! This concert was a thing of beauty!
This is the first time I bother with The Verve live and it's a great performance. Great sounding, tight band. A masterclass by Richard Ashcroft. Rock singers take note: it is totally possible to sing with passion AND precision.
Thanks for posting. I was there. The crush was real. I had to climb out as the fence wrecked my legs. Great gig tho. What a voice. Glad to have been at one of the iconic gigs of the 90s ❤
They really were so special together and i particularly love the early verve when they had a less commercial psychedelic sound. M c Cabe really had his own unique style that compliments Richard and the rest of the band. Im surprised they werent bigger in the USA and theyre every bit as good as Oasis.
The songs are slo beautifully crafted and perfect each contributing to the beautiful sound. In my opinion one of the greatest live rock bands of that decade.
Been wanting see this whole gig since the night I walked home from it, possibly 1 best days of my life. At least you experienced them. I did too, it’s the only way to look at it I guess.
thats still a thing at shows today it isnt a thing of the past
25 years today and still the greatest gig ever ❤ Love The Verve forever
The performance of The Rolling People is totally flawless, one of the best live tracks I've ever heard by anyone.
Agreed. Probably my fav version of the song.
I recorded off Radio 1 but lost the tape, still gutted 😭
@stevehegan3609 why?? The full show has now been released on the Urban Hymns deluxe edition, in video and audio.
This is a magical gig and by the way- Nick McCabe is on a different level - my favourite guitarist of all time
And now we are left with Richard casting of these band mates he created so much great music with as just session musicians and releasing bontempi versions of these songs. How the mighty have fallen..
I shouted ‘Who the fuck is Mick Jagger!?’ at this gig (cos I had a poster of Ashcroft wearing a T shirt that said this… ) and he had a go at me from the stage. Fuckin surreal and I wanted the ground to swallow me up at the time… but it’s made a good story for the last 25 years 😂
what did he say to you?
@@heyya99 something like: ‘It’s not about that, it’s about the music. This is the best night of my life, I’m not having some cunt in the crowd ruining it for me…
Not my finest moment… my mate had the recording and you could hear the crowd booing me
Did ya aye!
@@heyya99yo igual quiero saber
Off to see Richard in 2 weeks at Tramlines in Sheffield. The greatest front man/ vocalist of our generation and beyond.
But McCabe and Jones are next level. Gonna be sad if we never get them all back together again.
Faultless band!!!!
I remember driving home from a camping trip at the Lakes and my dad bought the Urban Hymns cassette and we listened to it a few times on the 2 hour+ drive home. He was born in '49 but passed on to me the Who, Stones, Small Faces etc. Funnily enough he also gave me the Verve. Ace.
Top dad 🎶
Urban Hymns was on repeat for me for quite a few months when it came out; got me through a very difficult end to a relationship.
So glad I did see these boys live. Dysfunctional but proper brilliant.
This is one of the great shows in the history of live rock music.
never gets old. and Ashcroft has always been a lighthouse of sorts in the darkest hour. music is power. cheers🙂
So true. He's an unlikely ray of light in a sea of dark, cynical clouds.
F-ing incendiary!!! Really regret never seeing this band. Phenomenal!!!
Same here man didn't discover them till after their last breakup
This kids, is how gigs should be done.
This is such a brilliant, shamanic, event, this band and this guy never once stop delivering in this show
Was there, blusey windy...
I was there 🙂 I remember the long walk back into Wigan and I slept in the bus shelter for the bus in the morning lol
Probably wouldn't want to go sleeping in the bus shelter these days Sophie but that aside you watched history in the making,so sad what has happened to the band .
Unbelievable. Whoever was there at this concert is so fortunate
Proud to be a Wiganer watching this !!! Them were the days when music had a beat made by instruments rather than electronic noise these days…. I’m a luck man because tha drugs don’t work….
Lots of electronic keyboard in these songs.
I saw them support Oasis in 1997 on the Be Here Now tour - what a double bill.
TOP TIER COMMENT
One of the best voices of Rock
🤣
Ashcroft's voice is beautiful. Passionate, real.
Not much of a range though
A Northern Soul is one of the best albums ever made. No question...
Que nostalgia de banda, cada letra, cada música tocada com a alma e o coração. Essa voz é incrível. saudações Brazil 🇧🇷
I was born in 94 but brought up round a lot of this music. For me, The Verve + The Charlatans are both criminally underrated bands from this era, two of the very best
Your parents music! Intoyahjacintiyah, go you Millenial
Born in 07 yet exactly same lad
Wow 😍Nick M is simply the greatest player of our generation. There’s no one like him
Such an incredible memory. Amazing night. I’m a Lucky Man to hold the first ticket printed to this show. #00001
I had the absolute pleasure of being there, being from Wigan and have the biggest band on the scene at that time to come home and play to a sell out was pure magic and truly unforgettable. Brilliant live band ❤❤❤
McCabe and Ashcroft, what a pair of incredible musicians and composers!!
Truly a shame they couldn't seem to get along.
So lucky I was there🙌
Richard was the only person I was in awe of back I the 90s , met him at the V festival , he was just on another planet like a shaman
yeah probably drugged out up to his ass
Cocaine is a hellova drug
V feasts were brilliant. Was there to see RPA circa 2004 and how he stayed on to listen to the crowd sing a medley of tracks instead of Oasis (who couldn’t attend).
This version of drugs don’t work is by far the best I’ve heard.
I was at this with a few mates 19 at the time, great memories. What a gig!
I WAS THERE... IT WAS FLAWLESS BEAUTY
I'm listening this music and working at the same time. (August 2024) 💪💪
I was there. Impeccable vocals. I thought he was off his tree when I originally attended ..
He most probably was 😂
22 years later. I still have the cassette i recode this on bia BBC radio one😂
Complete with "Don't buy Vauxhall cars they're shit!" from Richard which was mysteriously edited out of the official release (Urban Hymns superdeluxe)!
Not a phone in sight. Beautiful.
Also really like this performance of Weeping Willow at 30:38
11:11 the sound.
@@risetolife Jones on that bass sounds great :)
@@shaunrigby1 I'm in love with this band since 1997. This gig is amazing. My favorite song here is Sonnet. So honest and powerful!!!!
As a U.S. fan, I just "discovered" this band in the last year or two and am still addicted to the deluxe version of Urban Hymns, with a recording of this performance on disc two. Was never a huge fan of live albums but this recording just seems to catch a magical evening when they were at their peak. I only knew them for Bittersweet Symphony, but they were so much more than that.
I was there best gig ever I was 18 and I've been some gigs I'm now 42 this band are on another level
OMG.....this live version of History is sooo goood.
Yea this is probably my favorite live version of it I've heard.
Superb recording. Album quality, particularly the bass.
Thanks so much for posting this. I was fortunate enough to be there. Unforgettable night. Great time for British music 🎸🔥🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank god I was a teenager growing up during the 90's. The music scene went through the roof and live gigs like this were legendary.
I was there! Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
ur lucky …when this concert happened …my age was 2 years
@@ashylover96 don't make me feel old 🤣🤣🤣
@@sallyfletcher8874 no believe me ur live the best music industry):
Hey, when the drugs dont work was playing did all people in crowd start singing along?
me too 😎
Beck and John Martyn as support too? A fkn sublime gig!
History gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
I was at this one. This was an incredible concert. The special guests were Beck and John Martyn!!!!
I was just looking through youtube to see if there was any footage of this concert. I was there, Beck was electric but The Verve were unworldly. Best concert I ever attended, the vibe in the crowd was stellar.
amazing! just to think these guys were kids when they were writing such touching lyrics and making timeless music.
Jesus, I was only 27 yrs old , now 53....WTF. Loved The verve ❤
Same here - 57!
Great comment !
Only gig I’ve ever been to and not drinking (designated driver) it was amazing.
One of the best Concerts in UK History.
Man the mix is bang on! Sounds spectacular!
This is the first time I bother with The Verve live and it's a great performance. Great sounding, tight band. A masterclass by Richard Ashcroft. Rock singers take note: it is totally possible to sing with passion AND precision.
When I feel like absolute piss I watch this and I’m reborn
Epic band !!! Wow 25 years flew by so fast. This album (Urban Hymns) got me through university in year 1 !!!
This was such an electrifying concert!
Thanks for sharing this, I was there, one of the greatest nights of my life and certainly the best birthday gift I have ever recieved :D
Amen brother. I was there. It was as amazing as it looks
Your welcome man. Damn I envy you getting to actually experience it. Its so sad to me that I'll never see the verve live in person.
Thanks for posting. I was there. The crush was real. I had to climb out as the fence wrecked my legs. Great gig tho. What a voice. Glad to have been at one of the iconic gigs of the 90s ❤
Yeah I just read about that a few days ago. Crazy stuff. Glad you got out ok.
Thanks for uploading. This concert is sublime.
No problem!
Amazing
Saw this on MTV back in 1998. Always loved this band.
Thee Verve at Glastonbury 2008 ending (Love Is Noise) is the best live performance of a song I have seen yet on YT !!!
That is with out a doubt a favorite live performance of mine, and probably my favorite live version of love is noise.
Velvet morning is amazing 👏 the whole concert is top.
That outro to "Come On" is still bounding through the Universe like a gravitational wave!
Been wanting see this whole gig since the night I walked home from it, possibly 1 best days of my life. I remember the old dude getting boo'd off stage, also Beck who were on before The Verve were just as amazing. Can even remember getting the tickets from music shop opposite maccys in Wigan. Oh the memories...
that "old dude" would have been John Martyn-stone cold genius-obviously Richard Ashcroft knew that-pity the crowd didn't!
Doy gracias a quien se haya tomádo la molestia de haser esto tan bonito tan sacado del corazón. Agradezco con mi corazón gracias
Didn't know I was a Verve fan till I watched this, excellent! 👏
Hell yea. Enjoy!
