    As a Yaris Cross AWD-i owner it is really disappointing to now see how poorly the AWD system performs compared to the Suzuki. I think the HEV Vitara still has a mechanical driveshaft to the rear which clearly makes all the difference. I think the "i" in AWD-i stands for ineffectual. Thanks for taking to time to do the test and post the video, even if I don't like the result.

      Toyota seems to be following the same philosophy Honda had back in 2012 with their first-generation electronically-controlled AWD system. They prioritized efficiency and stability once moving as opposed to capability, (in Honda's case it could only put 25% of power to the back wheels until a few years later when it bumped up to 40%... which I think only happened because of the PR disaster they had on their hands). Toyota could absolutely put in a stronger rear motor and calibrate the traction control to improve it if they wanted to.

  • @scott8919
    @scott8919 Год назад +41

    Pathetic results from the Toyota. It appears 1) the rear system never has enough power to move the car by itself, and 2) traction control doesn't move power from one side to the other, just cuts power.

    • @toninocars
      @toninocars Год назад +1

    Well, just a confirmation of my thoughts, Toyota hybrids are the best cars when fwd only, their hybrid awd is a non sense. It’s not only the weak rear motor but this also creates extra problem, now we have not one but two open differentials and straggling TC. The problem is that because the 5hp Motor has a very narrow rev range (0-700rpm), the didn't gear it low enough for extreme scenarios like the roller test, so that it can help the car to be safer at higher speeds.

      @b_cattaneo Год назад +1

      I have heard several negative comments about this AWD-i system that are theoretically true. However, this is a simplistic assessment; I do not believe that in everyday uses this is a disadvantage.
      Certainly the additional rear-wheel drive lends a hand in common situations such as uneven and snowy roads compared to not having it, but a car built like this and on normal roads that also has low fuel consumption I don't think it needs much more. It depends on the uses.
      If I'm going to go off-road clearly it's not the right car, but even for the Vitara I wouldn't spend that kind of money if I'm going to use it off-road. Rather go with Suzuki Jimny or similar in those environments.
      Months ago I had to choose between the Yaris Cross and the Vitara. Although 4x4 is important to me and the Vitara's is stronger, I still opted for the Toyota for other reasons (and I am in an often snowy and alpine environment, but on normal roads).

It's just 5 hp which should be able to send over 500 Nm to rear axle - but it ain't doing it. And it has speed limitation. So the question is - is it worth the money. In Vitara there are no such limitations. Other aspects of both cars - that's a completely different matter.

    I suppose for many people it is easy to jump into conclusions when watching this video.
    There is no doubt the Vitara proved here to be extremely capable and superior to yaris in regards to offroad driving.
    However, reality is not so black and white.
    There are two points that need to be understood:
    1) main goal of every toyota hybrid is fuel efficiency, even if it is a four wheel drive hybrid. In this sense, yaris cross beats vitara by a significant margin, the difference is around 1,5L/100km. For this size of vehicle, yaris cross is the most fuel efficient 4wd on the market.
    2) this test is synthetic. Zero grip conditions occur only in very extreme situations. It has been proven in many videos that in real life situations like icy/snowy roads or muddy trails, yaris is perfectly able to hold its own. It is indisputable that the awd-i offers significantly more traction and capability than the FWD variant.
    I am not trying to defend the yaris really. It is purely a matter of preference.
    For someone who goes offroad regularly, vitara is absolutely the better choice. For people who feel they need a little more confidence for winter conditions, for occasional trip to the ski resort, yaris will be the right car and the owner will benefit from the low running costs all year round. If this capability is worth the higher price is up to anyone's judgment.

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  Год назад

      Unfortunately that's not entirely correct. It's not about offroad. There are many examples where Yaris Cross Hybrid (and Lexus UX) fail on snowy roads/hills. Another thing is speed limit - AWD-i system is limited to ~40 km/h, above that it engages only if slippage is detected - up to 70 km/h. In Vitara there are no such limitations so dynamic operation of All Grip Select system is much wider. AWD-i system is rather a helper, it should be officially called "mild awd".

    • @RedXcz
      @RedXcz Год назад +1

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers Can you show me those examples where it failed? In the videos I have seen, it made it. Sometimes barely, but made it.
      I am not trying to prove you wrong or saying that yaris can get up each and every hill. It surely cannot. But each car does have its limit eventually, awd or not.
      In general, there is no definition that describes what an awd car should be capable of, what makes a "true awd".
      I would say that at minimum, awd car should be more capable than an equivalent 2wd. That I believe is certainly true for yaris awd-i.
      Again, this is about point of view. Toyota does not advertise yaris awd-i as an all round offroader. In the promo materials, the car is shown driving in the city, the rear motor helping in steep slippery hills (wet cobblestone) or being able to overcome a snow hump when leaving a parking spot. I see no false advertising there.
      If you say the yaris is not good enough AWD car, in a similar way, I might say the vitara is not a good enough hybrid, since it is not able to achieve similar fuel efficiency that the yaris does.
      This really reminds me discussions between people who only acknowledge full-time awd as the only true awd, saying part-time awd sucks.
      In reality, MOST people, for MOST of the time, even on snowy roads, do not need awd. But there are SOME people that do go offroad nearly every day or live all the way up in the mountains, so they do need a very capable car to deal with that without stress. But these people also have to accept the inevitable fuel efficiency penalty and higher running costs of these cars.
      My point is, every car has its intended purpose. One just has to acknowledge that not everybody has the same needs and every solution to a problem has its own pros and cons.
      Cheers

    • @4x4.tests.on.rollers
      @4x4.tests.on.rollers  Год назад +2

      @@RedXcz Here's probably the best example of inabilities of the system: ruclips.net/video/wmuBBAeP2G8/видео.html
      No offroad, just easy snowy hill and rear axle o UX doing nothing. It doesn't matter if it goes to the top or not (2WD on winter tyres could probably make it), video shows what you can expect from the rear 5hp motor.
      In my opinion - each axle should be able to move the car by itself. No traction at front - rear pulls you, no traction at the back - front pulls you.
      This comparison is only about awd systems. Hybrid technology of Yaris Cross is way better than the one in Vitara, that's obvious. If you need effective awd system - Yaris Cross ain't a good choice. If you need good hybrid fuel efficiency - Vitara ain't a good choice.
      When it comes advertising - in my country, Toyota was advertising Yaris Cross as the suv capable of going to places where no other suv can go...
      And now the most ridiculous thing about the topic - non hybrid Yaris Cross AWD uses way better system than hybrid one. It has classic driveshaft and there are driving modes which really work. Just like in Vitara.

    • @RedXcz

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers that is indeed a pretty disappointing performance from the UX.

      ruclips.net/video/sqNZ3iWECck/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/zgqrqyETf_w/видео.html
      In all these, the awd-i function proved very beneficial. I guess the yaris cross is lighter than the UX, so it is able to cope better.
      Well, if the yaris cross awd-i was advertised as you say, that is indeed silly.
      Nevertheless, I did some basic math to see what "thrust" this rear motor is able to produce in horizontal direction:
      Motor torque: 52 Nm
      Gear ratio to axle: 10,487
      Wheel diameter: 0,67 m
      Since M = F * r , we get F = M / r , that is F = 52 * 10,487 / 0,67 * 2 = 1628 Newtons of force
      Well, I do not know how much a man can push. I spent some time googling and it seems that a regular human is able to push horizontaly with a force of 400 N. Supposedly a sumo warrior is able to push more than 4000 N, so there you go haha.
      So let's say that this rear motor is equivalent to some 4 people pushing, which I believe checks out with our real life experience pretty well, since 1 man is able to push a car on good level surface, but uphill is a different story. Few times me and some of my friends needed to push a dead 4wd car on grass and it was nearly impossible haha.
      Cheers

Check the first video at 28:00, 34:10, 46:15 - these are situations just like from roller tests, rear axle doing nothing. Not the mention the need of uphill driving on reverse gear to get more load on front axle... Like FWD.
      Second and third video - check how they start on snowy hill - there is always massive overspin of front wheels, which on more slippery surface means you are going nowhere. It shouldn't be like this in well tuned awd system.
      Numbers look nice but the problem of rear motor is that it will do nothing until the car moves... I have no idea why is it programmed this way and to be honest - I cannot find that 545 Nm at back...
      To sum up - it's all about the price of the system. Imho - it is too expensive for what it really offers. If I wanted to buy FWD version - Yaris Cross is the choice. If I wanted awd car - then definitely Vitara is the choice.

      @@ThomasStolz That's what any car with higher ground clearance can do. They didn't even needed AWD Yaris for that so there's no relation with our test.
