According to the description of “Black Swan” on Melon, Martha Graham’s quote was the inspiration for the song. “Black Swan” tells the story of a dancer, an artist, who fears the death of their career: the moment when they can no longer perform on stage. The moment when music no longer touches the artist's hearts or stirs their passion is the moment when the specter of that “first death” appears. Martha Graham quote: “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” The music vedio also represents Jung's concept of the shadow, since your shadow includes your deep seated fears . They are afraid to lose their passion for music , and the shadow behind Suga at the beginning is huge and has a life of it's own. Then at the end of the song fhey have faced their fear and the shadow loses it's power over them and Jungkook's shadow at the end of the vedio shrinks and disappears.
wow!! That is sooo freaking deep. Thank you for sharing this with me (and for making me cry lol) but yes I can completely understand and relate to this quote and to the description of it all. Powerful. x0x0x0
@@lindseymackail9350 just as some addition background this section of their work was from a time that they were experiencing exponential global recognition, meeting and exceeding their initial aspirations and also at this time they came very close to disbanding. In interviews various members talk about their needing to find their new voice or fearing the loss of music as the most important drive in their lives. You can also find frank and heart-wrenching descriptions of how close they came to ending as a group.
Jimin has a background in contemporary dance, several martial arts as well as some street dance. Interesting that you pointed out right away the contemporary/martial arts crossover. The lyrics allude to their fear of losing their passion for their craft ("it would be my first death"..originally a dancer's quote). Wings and shadows are common symbols in BTS's MVs and songs. Jimin is the shadow in the first rap section and J-Hope (also a very trained dancer) is the shadow for RM's rap. I think you would enjoy the "behind the scenes" of Jimin shooting his contemporary solo parts for this song. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/xMfp2jcK52M/видео.html . I appreciated your reaction. Thank you.
Yes, I was about to recommend this Jimin's behind the scenes of his Black Swan solo. I love it when dancers comment their thoughts on Jimin's dancing. And the fact that Jimin knows contemporary and martial arts and hearing her speak about the similarities in the movements was so interesting. There's that one move that looks like Capoeira, that is also a dance move that I don't know the name of.
You should definitely check out the Black Swan shoot that they did with James Corden. That is one of my favorite tv spots that they did for this song. You should also check out their performance for the 2020 MAMA awards show. That featured a coreography thick Black Swan intro that is perfection (at least to my non-dancer butt!)
I'm sure others will say - watch a making of video of Jimin recording the solo work for this video. He's astonishing. I think this song has a lot of meaning for many creative people - that fear that you'll lose it. RM's lyrics are so poignant.
well said. We all struggle with the fear of losing our creativity or when it just doesn't have the same affect anymore....its a very sensitive spot for artists and performers
Jimin can litterally kill you in four kinds of martial arts so you're not wrong there. I think it's really helped him as a dancer as well. He's very powerful yet graceful in his moves. 💜
I agree, I actually am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and dancing and martial arts really worked well together for me as well. Combining the two crafts just takes it to another level.
@Lindsey Mackail That is amazing! Both Jimin and Jungkook have black belts in Tae Kwon Do also! 😊 I think you will love the Black Swan performance from MMA 2020! 💜
I love how you always went "ah" "oh wow" "this is so sick" whenever it's Jimin dancing. Black Swan really is his song. And every single performance of Black Swan as well as behind shoots are really worth to watch. Top 3 definitely would be their first stage performance at James Corden, Jimin's solo dance intro for their 2020 online concert "MOTS ON:E" and their performance for MMA 2020

Before this Black Swan MV was released, BTS first released a more classical version of this song with a performance from the MN Dance Company from Slovenia. It’s a beautiful version of the song and it would be great to hear your thoughts on the choreography. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/vGbuUFRdYqU/видео.html
Lindsey, please check out this suggestion by Jill Goth. BTS gives us clues/surprises regarding what their next video is going to be about, and this was one of their gifts to us before Black Swan was released.
Yes, beautiful piece of art. It is part of an artistic line built for the album part of which is the Black swan. It includes dance, monumental art exhibitions, light installation, happening with eco balloons, and more around the world with the title "CONNECT, BTS".
It would be great to see you react to the dance practises as well as the official MV. I feel like you’d be able to see the entire performance and it would be a better way to get your dancers perspective.
Thank you for your video, Lindsey. Jimin was the top student in the modern dance department at Busan High School of Arts, and also studied popping and locking at Just Dance Academy. He also has a black belt in Taekwondo, 8 years of kendo, and some hapkido too! I love all of them but especially Jimin for his talent and personality. He’s got a great sense of humour, and is very caring and affectionate towards the other members.
I also forgot to mention that JIMIN has a Black belt in Taekwondo and has studied two other types of martial arts for a period of 7-8 years❣️He started Taekwondo when he was like 4 years old ❣️ JIMIN attended a theatrical High School where he studied Contemporary and Modern dance for 1 1/2 years and prior to that he studied hip hop, popping& locking and several other styles of street dance🥴 He was at the top of his class in dance and his scholastic abilities❣️ He has an IQ of like 130 too….JIMIN is an exceptional young man as are all of these wonderful guys❣️ I hope you enjoy learning about them….

Yeees, I've been waiting so bad for this and just loved it! 💜 This music video, this choreography is pure art. Jimin's body control is insane, so light and at the same time so precise that it feels like the movement of water. Can't wait for BTS's next reactions! Suggestions: ON Kinect Manifesto Film, Fake Love, Dyonisus at MMA 2019 and Dynamite at MMA 2020 (in this presentation they changed the original coreo and created a break dance in honor of MJ and it was freaking amazing).
please please please react to the dance practice video of black swan you will fall in love it's amazing!! And the MV behind the scenes for the contemporary dance parts!
As many others have mentioned I would really love to see you break down Jimin's solo dance video for this song ♥️ he's so good at storytelling through his dancing. It's enchanting to watch. He has experience in contemporary, traditional Korean dance, a lot of hip hop styles (popping and locking and Krumping etc) as well as martial arts so he's really able to integrate all his skills in a perfect way to suit each song's atmosphere
“On Kinetic Manifesto:Come Prima” is a great dancing/vocal performance that is also more recent. I would start with the music video first. (Just make sure it is the “Kinetic version”.) It was choreographed by Sienna Lalau- who is in center formation at the beginning of the music video. Her dance team, The Lab, dances with them. The Blue Devils marching band also joins them. You can check out pretty much all BTS lyrics in English here on RUclips. Knowing the stories behind the dances makes them even more beautiful. And as you will find out, while they have “bops”, many of their lyrics tend to be deep (like Black Swan and On)-which is a refreshing change. I would also second the James Corden Live Black Swan performance (love the bare feet. ) Black Swan is so unique and beautiful, from the dancing to the cinematography.
Thank you. The Black Swan art film was released by Bighit prior to this MV in support of the Arts. For your own pleasure please watch this one too. Thank you again. There is also a video of bts members watching it.
It’s good that you’re checking out the music videos but I think to really see the full choreography, the dance practices, award shows or behind the scenes would be more up your ally. Any of their MAMA or MMA performances are really. They’re music award show performances.

Hey :) for choreo focused reactions, you should check out « 3J ». One video is called home party (thats a practice on the stage) and the real one in front of audience is called 3J full dance with their initials in the title. Its basically a mash up by the 3 main dancers of the group!
Watching you discover the videos reminds me on how I got to like them more and more. I would strongly recommend you watch their live performances of Black Swan, and of course Jimin's solo Mama 2019 performance !
So much fun watching you! The James Corden is really good for seeing the full dance live but they are currently performing this at their concerts and it is amazing, breathtaking and beautiful! 💜💜💜
One of the lines references this quote from Martha Graham, “A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” So fitting!
This is my favourite BTS video and concept so far too. The artistry is just absolutely fantastic. Thank you for taking a look at it! (for sure check out the choreo video for black swan, it's awesome)
Their Black Swan live performance in James Corden show is such a perfection! You must watch it! I still can't forget tht performance, it was so mesmerising.
I would enjoy watching you go through their dance practices as much if not more than their MVs. I'd also love to hear your take on how their skill has evolved over time. Thanks for another great reaction 😊
BTS danced barefoot when they performed this song on the Late, Late Show with James Corden. Beautiful! You should also see the other live versions of this song. Soooo good!
This song is, in my humble opinion, BTS's grand opus thus far. It really is an exquisite piece, particularly when you know the circumstances that led to this song being written. As far as the MV goes, there are so many layers to this video: on the surface the song is about what happens to you if you are an artist that lives for their art and you lose the love for it. They say it would be like their first death. It's a heartbreaking song. As for the MV, a lot of the symbolism is linked to the Bangtan Universe storyline and the album theme of good and evil. The song itself was written during a time when they were discussing disbanding, overwhelmed by their meteoric rise to international fame. Lots going on :) Great reaction! Thank you.
*If the beginning and end of "Black Swan" sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to an iconic instrumental from Avatar: The Last Airbender.* *I just literally found this out a bit ago, after having played this song for almost two years 😂🤣.* I *t just suddenly clicked out of nowhere.* *I love ATLA and BTS so it's a win-win over here 😌💜💜*
There’s a famous quote about for a dancer that there’s two deaths…. When you lose your passion for dance and when you die…. The shadows are showing their fears and insecurities that plague them and the fear of losing their passion… which I’m sure you may be able to relate to and understand pretty well… beautifully honest…. The fragile and then the powerful and sure…. I like how you think
I love how they play with duality in their videos.. black and white, light and shadow. I watched the 'filming of' for this video, and the members spoke about how excited they were to film in this particular location. It's an old Hollywood theatre. They also talked about how (I think) each of the members practiced with wings, and they decided Jungkook looked the best, and they used Jimin and JHope to create the shadows you spoke of, where the shadows are dancing behind Yoongi and RM, and the one that shrank down behind Jungkook was also Jimin. And yes, there was so much thought that went into this routine. Even with the mirrors. I had to watch it a few times, before I realized that even when Jin turned around, the Jin in the mirror was still facing towards the camera. There was, also, an art film release of the song, with MN Dance company performing to 'Black Swan', and then BTS did a reaction video to it.
HEY LINDSEYYY! HELLO! YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY CHECK OUT THEIR WHOLE PERFORMANCE AT MAMA 2019. IT WAS SICK! FOR ME, IT'S ONE OF THEIR BEST AND MOST LEGENDARY PERFORMANCES EVER! PLEASE, WATCH AND REACT TO ITTTTT! WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
this is really a beautiful MV. you should also try watching their performance in James Corden's show, in private since you'll get copy-righted if vlogging it. anyway, the set upon that show was really nice, it gave a vibe like being in a magical Black Forest. Please also watch ON Kinetic Manifesto Film, the choreography is so sick! you'll love it :)
First welcome to the rabbit hole called K-pop. 'm so glad I found your channel. so, love when actual dancers/choreographers react to Kpop idols work. These idols work so hard for their fans. They practice 8+ hours on the choreos. Some people say," there's no way they can sing and dance perfectly." Idols like BTS were trained to sing while they're running on a treadmill. Anywho.. thank you. Stay safe, healthy and strong.
The Map of the Soul album series is based on the psychological theories of Carl Jung. The series traces the journey of the self past the mask of the outer Persona into the subconscious Shadow, to the integration of both into the whole self of the Ego. Black Swan is in the realm of the Shadow (surprise, surprise), the part of ourselves we don't want to admit or show others or even know exists. RM has said that he wrote it with the movie Black Swan in mind. A lot of the language reminds me of Joseph Campbell's, "hero's journey," regarding the journey to the underworld.
I have seen other people mentioning before, but as a pro, you should check Black Swan Art film with MN Company. I was blown away, it embodies perfectly what BTS felt at that moment, when they recorded MOTS7 album. And all BTS Black Swan performances are very artistic. These guys are on another level: highly professional and artistic.
I absolutely loved your reaction; you'll definitely want to see the dance practice, as well as the James Corden show performance. Also, I agree that looking up the lyrics is essential. Have fun! Looking forward to more BTS. 🥰👍
You will find that BTS Map Of The Soul albums are based on Swiss Psychiatrist Carl Jung's Map Of The Soul theory of one's persona, shadow and ego. This song (Black Swan) was part of MOTS7 album which focuses mainly on the Shadow and Ego part where their album MOTS Persona focuses on just that our persona and the questions we ask ourselves.. "who are we really?". BTS truly dives deep in their music, they are known for that. I feel that is one of the things that makes them so great! They are not afraid to get us thinking of such deep topics. I think that is one way they are also able to stay so grounded, they stay present in what is going on around them.
I knew you were going to love that one. You should check out their live performances of this song then you’ll see the choreo in full. Thanks for the great reactions! 💜

I think you are the first reactor of BTS who has knowledges & insight in many different genres of dance & its skills, who also can share choreographer’s perspective.
In my opinion, ‘Black Swan’ is the most artistic & beautifully created MV of BTS & all of us are so proud of BTS for created & given us such a exquisite masterpiece.
Especially our talented Jimin has worked really hard to given us most extraordinary & exquisite dance performance in this MV & their live performance, but unfortunately this MV didn’t show all of his beautiful dance performance.
So pls, check out the < Jimin’s ‘Black Swan’ solo behind the scenes > & < ‘Black Swan’ MV behind the scenes > & < ‘Black Swan - what’s that shadow? >
I will live all the links in reply comments section.
Thanks again & looking forward to your next reaction video! 💜💜💜

Yeah it's time for more Black Swan. The live from Jimmy Fallon is so beautiful but their MAMA & MMA full showcases are fully mind blowing.
black swan live at their latest show in seoul is a MUST watch, you would love it
"omg he's flawless" yeah, wbk 😍
There is a couple of behind the scenes. 1) for the mv and how it was shot and 2) Jimin's solo shoot for the mv.
They are both fabulous 💜🤗🇺🇲💜
Hey :) for choreo focused reactions, you should check out « 3J ». One video is called home party (thats a practice on the stage) and the real one in front of audience is called 3J full dance with their initials in the title. Its basically a mash up by the 3 main dancers of the group!
Watching you discover the videos reminds me on how I got to like them more and more. I would strongly recommend you watch their live performances of Black Swan, and of course Jimin's solo Mama 2019 performance !
How fun are you. Bts is amazing. 70 and loving them,
So much fun watching you! The James Corden is really good for seeing the full dance live but they are currently performing this at their concerts and it is amazing, breathtaking and beautiful! 💜💜💜
Black Swan is a Masterpiece. The dance, lyrics, visuals and the deep meaning of the song is just so freaking beautiful.
After watch more of a hundred songs and performances, Black Swan is always on my top 3 of my favorites BTS songs.
Okay now you have to watch the LIVE version of black swan with all of the feathers. Its breathtaking.
One of the lines references this quote from Martha Graham, “A dancer dies twice-once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” So fitting!
It is so true and so deep at the same time. ;)
This is my favourite BTS video and concept so far too. The artistry is just absolutely fantastic. Thank you for taking a look at it! (for sure check out the choreo video for black swan, it's awesome)
I love the reaction! 💕 I also love how your reacting to them as a group. I'm so proud to be Army 💜
FYI, They have dance practice video which you can see the whole movement clearly : )
Their Black Swan live performance in James Corden show is such a perfection! You must watch it! I still can't forget tht performance, it was so mesmerising.
Your gasp at the beginning - I got chills. It was like watching this for the very first time, but through you. Thank you for doing these!
awww I love that ;)
They have so many music videos that just so awesome in production and story line. Welcome to the BTS rabbit hole.
The dance practices are incredible I love it.
the shadow was done by park jimin @2:42, he's phenomenal
I would enjoy watching you go through their dance practices as much if not more than their MVs. I'd also love to hear your take on how their skill has evolved over time. Thanks for another great reaction 😊
Will do!!
This is song is outstanding when performed live.
JIMIN IS MAGIC HIS DANCE IS ART 💛💜
I literally can’t wait for you to watch the whole choreography.
One of my favorite videos, songs, and live performances. Black Swan is an absolute jewel!🖤
From the concept, to the lyrical content and depth of this song is what makes it absolutely stunning!
oh i hope you watch the spring day choreo practice one day,, its one of my favorite choreographies ever because it tells the story so well
I never thought about the movement representing being the instrument that creates the sound and not the opposite how interesting!
Thank you.
thank u sm for the reaction! loved it
keep reacting to BTS , Army will support u
*If the beginning and end of "Black Swan" sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to an iconic instrumental from Avatar: The Last Airbender.*
*I just literally found this out a bit ago, after having played this song for almost two years 😂🤣.* I
*t just suddenly clicked out of nowhere.*
*I love ATLA and BTS so it's a win-win over here 😌💜💜*
There’s a famous quote about for a dancer that there’s two deaths….
I love this son, it's just so beautiful to the point that I have their ending pose as my wallpaper of my laptop
Yey finally! Looking forward to more BTS content Love from Philippines 💜
WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!
thank you for the reaction💜.
Ooh yeah, each BTS member already has his own Instagram account last year in 2021.😊
I HIGHLY recommend their Black Swan dance practice. It shows all of the choreo and formation changes. 💜
Their MVs always have story plots and a lot of symbolism. I say u give it a try and learn about it u gonna love it
Lindsay you need to see their performance at the PDT show in L.A. and the presentation is so beautiful!!
Your final comments were totally dope. Thank you.
Next react BTS - ON KINETIC MANIFESTO FILM 🔥🔥🔥 the hardest dance according to them
this is really a beautiful MV. you should also try watching their performance in James Corden's show, in private since you'll get copy-righted if vlogging it. anyway, the set upon that show was really nice, it gave a vibe like being in a magical Black Forest.
Please also watch ON Kinetic Manifesto Film, the choreography is so sick! you'll love it :)
Was waiting for this!!!🤩
Hope you enjoyed it Zsandra! Love your name btw ;)
Loved your reaction, this is one of my faves, looking forward to seeing the rest!
Please react to their black swan performance on James Corden next. They performed bare foot there too.
I LOVE YOUR REACTION
I massively recommend mma 2019 it really shows of their dance and performance skills , it’s jaw dropping honestly .
Hi can you react to BTS- FIRE 🔥 ❤️
First welcome to the rabbit hole called K-pop. 'm so glad I found your channel. so, love when actual dancers/choreographers react to Kpop idols work. These idols work so hard for their fans. They practice 8+ hours on the choreos. Some people say," there's no way they can sing and dance perfectly." Idols like BTS were trained to sing while they're running on a treadmill. Anywho.. thank you. Stay safe, healthy and strong.
Omg she has to watch either a live performance of this or the dance practice!!! I love her analysis!!
JIMIN is the black swan. Perfect man...
Great reaction!! I think you would like the art film version
You should definately watch the other version of this, the ”Black Swan Art Film performed by MN Dance Company”. It is beautiful.
So happy I reacted to this masterpiece! It’s one of my fave songs and performances of all time
You need to see their dance practices for "Danger" and "Fire." These are from their early days when they were hungry, and you can tell.
The dance practice would be nice to see the full choreography 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Watching her fall in love with Jimin every time I see one of her videos is just 100% worth the watch
lol Thanks!! It happens more and more every video lol.
BTS. 💜 Arte , Versatilidad , Talento y Belleza
I knew you were going to love that one. You should check out their live performances of this song then you’ll see the choreo in full. Thanks for the great reactions! 💜
Aww really wanted to see dance practice or live of this one, and all future ones ^^
your puppy at the beginning looked at the camera like "yeah...???" next please: ON Kinetic Manifesto, as much of a must see as Black Swan!!
You should see black swan at the MMA 2020 awards, a true work of art, they dance it with the orchestra version song
