I have stray cats, skunks, American possums, and turkey vultures in my backyard. I live on a semi-major road, which is traveled a lot during the day, but is all but empty at night. Our back yard's pretty big with wood piles and shelters we've built for the animals to hunker down in, plus some huge strong trees that the vultures all sleep in. We put out cat food for the cats, skunks and possums in the early morning, and any spoiled meat gets tossed out onto the wood piles for the vultures. Because of this, I'm pretty sure all the vultures in the entire city rest in our yard, as well as a good portion of the local possums, skunks and stray cats. Someone's gotta look after the local clean up crew, after all. We have a neighbor who works for the town shelter who will trap the cats and get their medical needs cared for, including fixing them so they don't proliferate, and if they're friendly she rehabilitates and homes them through the shelter. If they're not friendly at all and too fearful or aggressive to humans they get released into the back yard. Sometimes she accidentally catches the skunks or possums too, and if she notices injuries on them they get medical care and rehabilitation before being released back into the yard. Also, if a vulture gets injured she makes sure they get back on their feet too.
God bless you for helping, friend. I feed the local critters, too. The wild is a hard place to live and any little extra meals these critters can get is a blessing to them.
Onion Face I’m sorry, that really sucks :( I’ve had good luck so far. At the same time I’m a freak of nature because I don’t get wrecked by my pets passing. I enjoy their time with me so much. When I’m financially ready I get new little lives to share my love with. I hope you and your husband can find peace in your fur babies’ passing :)
My ratty died 2 days ago. It’s been so rough but I can’t swear off rats. They are such wonderful pets and give so much love and companionship that’s just different than any other animal. They are special and will always hold the favorite animal place in my heart💖🐀💖
Onion Face I saw four cute rats at my local store. They look healthy from what i seen but due to size of the cage I don’t have the space but I feel bad that no one would buy rats since in Canada Dogs, fish, hamsters, birds and Cats tend to be more popular. Pet mice are being sold as Well but where I live it’s not common to have pet mice even though stores sell them it’s hard to find the right food and treats for them. I find mice less likely to bite or chew on bars than hamsters. They are skittish but the mice I have never bite even if i put my hand in the cage.
My grandad has a skunk when i was little he would said "ewww who farted!" And then he would point on the skunk i LOVED IT now the skunk lives with and with her babbies!
So skunks are kind of bigger, chubbier, smellier weasels 😂 Ps: I love your videos! They’re so great and as someone how would like to become a vet for wild animals I find them really useful! 💜💜 and I’m so happy for you that you got engaged
meg Because they know their territory in the wild. Pet skunks only know the house, so if they escape they don't recognize a thing outside and get lost.
I think it may be similar with ferrets. But I take mine for a walk outside a house and he knows the way back from a forest. You should see my ferret running through a meadow, a backyard, then straight for a door. 😂 Of course he's on a leash, safety reasons.

We had a skunk near my old work place, trash of course, we named her Stephanie, she sprayed my coworker and it was, well, disgusting. Depending on where you live, it's possible to get permits to keep them. You just have to make sure they're form a properly licensed breeder. Here in Nova Scotia, Canada, you can have a skunk if: A) You obtain a permit B)Only get one from a licensed breeder, not randomly from the wild C) Make sure there's a vet that can see it And D) It's not the stereotypical black with white stripe. Luckily, they can come in spots, albino, fawn, brown, mixed, etc.

I figgen love skunks. They are probably one of my favorite animals actually. And they smell A LOT more then weasels & ferrets.. even when they aren't spraying. That being said, pet skunks have the scent glands removed (just like pet ferrets) This means they all smell less then they would otherwise... But yah, they all smell no mater what. Wild skunks you can smell from at least 20feet away and it's STRONG. I went camping once and my tent was right on one of the local skunks commute path too the creek. (Ergo, it's restaurant). The first night there I was 3/4's of the way asleep and suddenly smelled it really close to my tent and freaked out. Made a bit of noise in my tent to let it know I was there.. but not enough to scare it. (It of course already smelled me from probably 50 feet away). It just wandered past my tent. Then early morning around like 4 am I jerked out of a deep sleep to it's smell as it walked home. I camped in the same spot for a week. After the first night, I typically just went to bed right before it wandered by for it's "Morning" commute, relaxed in bed inside my tent with a smile on my face. Told it good morning and good night as it walked by and passed out afterwards. Then at 4am I would wake up to it again, tell it good night. Wait for like 5 mins to make sure it was way pass my tent on its walk, get up and go pee outside my tent and go back to sleep. I like to think that it at least detected that I was friendly. :-)
this was such an interesting and informative, not to mention helpful video! In the future would you ever consider doing a video on how you keep your bigger snakes? With things like enclosure size, if they're terrestrial or arboreal, if they like to have water to go in, or if they prefer to burrow, how often and how much they're fed, how often you handle them, or just other intriguing facts about big snakes and keeping them. I think it would be really helpful and super interesting! Lots of love and keep up the wonderful videos!

I had a few skunks years ago but I had many more raccoons which chased the skunks away but the skunks may be back because for the first time in years my backyard looks just like the picture you showed, thank you very much for that, also thank you for the solution, heaven forbid I ever need it, cuz I was buying the tomato juice myth. I am studying at a college in Hampshire England called Sparsholt, we have a male skunk called Pepe and he’s very gorgeous, I haven’t worked with him just seen him looking around his enclosure for food, and I helped build his new enclosure and I can’t wait to watch him around around it.

this was such an interesting and informative, not to mention helpful video! In the future would you ever consider doing a video on how you keep your bigger snakes? With things like enclosure size, if they're terrestrial or arboreal, if they like to have water to go in, or if they prefer to burrow, how often and how much they're fed, how often you handle them, or just other intriguing facts about big snakes and keeping them. I think it would be really helpful and super interesting! Lots of love and keep up the wonderful videos!

I had a few skunks years ago but I had many more raccoons which chased the skunks away but the skunks may be back because for the first time in years my backyard looks just like the picture you showed, thank you very much for that, also thank you for the solution, heaven forbid I ever need it, cuz I was buying the tomato juice myth. You have great energy no wonder the animals love you!

I am studying at a college in Hampshire England called Sparsholt, we have a male skunk called Pepe and he’s very gorgeous, I haven’t worked with him just seen him looking around his enclosure for food, and I helped build his new enclosure and I can’t wait to watch him around around it.

I adore skunks! I’m lucky enough to have two at the place I volunteer and they are truly so snuggly and cuddly, the female in particular: she’s my baby! I’ve been ill lately and unable to go for a few months, but I’m back Tomo and SO excited!
