  • Hi, this is the 5th video in the Sony Walkman series. In this one I try and repair a faulty Walkman WM-FX463 which is not outputting any sound and does not play tapes.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    For future reference, if you look near the chip you were talking about, there's an area that says PREOUT (twice) - and there's some test points near that - you can use those, and create a cable to plug into another amp (or your speaker) and see if audio is at least getting that far, then there may also be a test point AFTER the amp, but before the jack....

    Just had a quick look at the service manual, IC301 Audio Amp: Pin 7 Vcc, should be at 2.9V, Pin 5 Gnd. Pins 4 & 8 audio outputs, they should connect to o/p jack. This is where an oscilloscope comes in handy for tracing the audio through. Cap C317 is across supply supply rail so you should have nearly batt. voltage (I think it goes through a diode, so that will drop a little).

  • @MatiusLenin
    @MatiusLenin 5 лет назад +1

    It is unlikely that one of the ICs has been damaged. My suggestion is to look for corroded or broken paths. I repaired a walkman with that problem.
    I think this board has some broken paths.
    When a capacitor is short, on both sides you must have 0 ohms, if it is different from 0, what you have is a resistor in parallel to the capacitor.

  • @GadgetUK164

    Great attempt =D That small ceramic cap measuring as a short - it was probably across a coil or inductor (normal). These sometimes have independant fuses on there for the different sections. I thought I saw an 'F1' marking on there earlier - check none of those are open circuit.
    The larger cap on there looks to be a super cap - those often leak (sometimes hard to tell), are you sure that didn't cause any damage around that part of the PCB. All you need is one missing ground connection (maybe around the battery terminal area) and you could lack sound. Sometimes they use ferrite beads and those can blow like a fuse too (and those can go open circuit as well).
    This is the sort of thing that would be easier to fix with a scope - just scope the inputs and outputs around the audio circuitry to work out where the audio is missing.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks again Chris, can I ask a question on the scope. If I was to put a single probe onto the tip of the 3.5mm headphone jack would it show up as a wave if it was working and then if it shows nothing do you work your way back until you find the wave or is it much more complicated than that. Or is it something like...sometimes it will show a sine wave if it is working and a different wave if it is not etc. I hope that makes sense as if I had to know all the different waves or the strength of them then I would be completely lost. Sorry for the newb type question. I will open this up again and have a look for some fuses, I completely forgot to check that :-)

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, that's pretty much it! You could for example have probed those input pins on that IC and see if it looks like sound (you can tell if it is by stopping and starting the tape and watching the wave form). You can also compare to a working system to see what the audio looks like before you start. The only settings you would need to adjust on the scope is switch the coupling from DC to AC, and adjust the voltage and timebase settings to get the signal to fit on the screen how you want it.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад +3

      Please please please do a beginners guide on using a scope Chris!!!!!! So I understand what you said apart from changing the coupling from DC to AC. How would you know to change that or do you always change to AC when scoping audio??????

  • @coll6
    @coll6 5 лет назад

    I know this is an old video but want to make a suggestion. It is easier to break circuits down into blocks of one function. For an example when you asked what made the sound. Imagine it like this. Sound is decoded from the tape and sent as a signal to some chip that has to process it into audio. After it is processed it is fed into an amplifier. Somewhere there the volume switch will come into play. Then out the audio jack. Makes it easier to narrow down where the fault in when it isn't on one side like the power chips. When you look at chips they tend to always look similar to what they do. For an example you'll usually see a computer processor near a bunch of capacitors to reduce sound. You'll see amplifiers near larger power traces and heat sinks among other larger components. When you start noticing these patterns like that you can get an idea what part of the board does what even if you don't grasp the full picture. Hope this helps and I would seriously suggest purchasing yourself some kind of oscilloscope. In your case maybe a very cheap single channel one. You don't need it more than just to see if signals are there or not. Sure a multimeter is nice but it wont easily show audio or signals coming from a jack but an oscilloscope can see noise like that easily. One other device that maybe helpful is a logic probe. Very cheap device allows you to tell where a signal has a high or low or if it is fluctuating between those values. Very good and simple way to see if any kind of signal is happening on that probe spot. Tools like this can show you what is happening for example on that pre amp chip.

  • @standishgeezer
    @standishgeezer 5 лет назад +5

    If you have an old computer speaker (or maybe the amplified speaker you already use would suffice) you really should build yourself a simple 'signal tracer' Vince. I made one and use it regularly. It's very helpful in tracing where your signal is breaking down. That and a very cheap & cheerful power supply would help you no end with these repairs.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад +2

      That is great advice, another viewer mentioned that as well. Am I right in thinking if I made up one and connected it using the ground from the Walkman board and then used it to probe the output of the Audio pre amp chip with the other wire from the speaker that I should get some level of audio on the output pin. So do you think it is that square chips that converts the tape head input to audio that we can understand or does it get converted before the square chip. Hope that makes some sense :-)

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад +1

      Sorry, just realised these tapes are analogue aren't they so I suppose no converting it done just amplifying??????

    • @standishgeezer
      @standishgeezer 5 лет назад +2

      @@Mymatevince Cheers Vince. Yes that is about right. I do think the pre-amp/power amp chip should be examined. With a home-made signal tracer (a very basic circuit with probe & ground cables coming off one side and a 3.5mm jack coming off the other side of the circuit plugged into your amplified speaker) I would be connecting the ground clip to the cassette player ground and touching the probe to pins 22,25 34 & 35 in turn of the LA4585M. You should then be able to hear the signal on your amplified speaker. The LM4585 acts as both the pre amplifier and power amplifier, so the pins I mention should carry a signal. If they do, then the chip is good and you could continue probing the components following those pins to see where the signal disappears. I would also want to probe pins 23 & 24 (which I think is where the radio signal enters the chip) If there is signal on 23/24 but no signal from the other pins mentioned, I would start to suspect a bad chip. Sorry for the long reply, but it's a bit difficult to explain in text. I could build you a simple signal tracer (gratis) if you want but it could take a week or two as I'm quite busy at the moment.

    • @standishgeezer
      @standishgeezer 5 лет назад

      By the way, before going any further it may be worth confirming that the output socket internals are good. You could do this quite easily by hooking a couple of crocodile clips on the ground and tip jack plug that goes to your amplifier and touching the other side of the alligator cables on the solder joints of the output socket (the outer two are ground and the inner two left & right output). If you get an output from the solder points, the socket is damaged.

    • @ryans413
      @ryans413 5 лет назад

      Swaggin dragon Yes sound chips are a thing called pre amp chip some are decoders but that's more in receivers that need to decode the surround sound mix. The information from the type is in analogue format and needs to be decoded to a stereo output that then goes to a pre amp witch is then controlled by the volume switch witch then is outputted through the headphone jack in a stereo format. The types already in stereo so there's no need to really decode that much it's not like a surround sound mix where it needs to put information to certain speakers at a given time it just converts it from analogue to digital out of the headphone jack. So good place to start be the headphone jack witch he did work your way back could be a faulty sound chip cause radio dose not work either that be the same thing radio is actually analogue too the radio we listen to in are cars is analogue there is digital radio but the normal radio we all know is still analogue and that as well needs to be converted to digital out of the headphone jack

    Power out usually refers to an output be it voltage or Audio, so it makes sense a stereo Pre-amp/Amplifier has two Power outputs and two power inputs, thats six pins for a chip, so what do the other pins do, well various functions can be assigned ; Eg filtering, muting bias and even feedback pins to control stability and or even lower distortion.
    Now Vince I noticed you used two brands of batteries, which BTW is just as bad as using batteries with different levels of charge to them, Yes modern batteries for the most are now designed so that this is not to much of a problem by them exploding via a mismatch of charge to them, but even so there still is a chance if a really bad battery is connected with a slightly over charged batery fresh from the factory, Another reason why it's a bad Idea to use different brands is the fact each battery manufacturer have different chemical compositions for their batteries, thus one or more batteries may experience extreme stress and thus induce leakage, not to mention the significant loss of charge to the battery with the highest charge to it..

    you improove your skills pretty fast, but you need to be more gentle to electronics, don't toss them that much ... anyway your videos are interesting, keep making them ;). I think the problem is with square chip on the back PCB. It is LA4xxx ... this chip is main headphone amp and tape head preamp. Many years ago i had to change a similar one of theese to fix similar sony walkman. Set your iron to 330-350C ... 400C is too hot, solder melt on about 187C. Try to reach front board, where is main processor, the board may be coroded and cause the problems. Also try to connect the grounds on walkman and your test power amp and poke walkman's volume potentiometer pins with one of your test amp channels for any sound.

    Of the radio side of things, like with phones with the radio chips, the headphones become the aerial and its likely its got white noise suppression which means it only makes a proper sound when it tunes into a radio station. I had a portable back in the day that had to use special aerial headphones otherwise the radio never got a signal which I think it took from the earthing.

    From what I can see the capacitor that is reading short goes to the switch next to the head phone jack. It appears to be a three pin switch so the center pin should lead of to the faulty component(more than likely the LA4585 chip). But by flipping the switch the other way the short on the capacitor should disappear. If it doesn't then the faulty component is after the capacitor which I can't see in the video.

    Vince oh Vince... When are you going to STOP calling diode test mode 'continuity test'???? It's NOT CONTINUITY BEEP!! IT"S A DIODE TEST MODE YOU NUMPTY! USE Ohm MODE TO TEST FOR RESISTANCE/CONTINUITY!

    • @Tycowiz
      @Tycowiz 5 лет назад +1

      He's learning hopefully.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад

      Sorry but why can't you use the 'beep' (diode) test to check for continuity, it is because different multi meters are set up differently so some will beep at different resistances? When you use the Ohm mode what do you class as a short (it is above a certain figure or a certain range) as when I have tried it I get different readings which confuse me but a nice beep is quick and easy to listen to. So when you are fault finding looking for a short to ground on a cap do you not use the beep test? Please explain it as if you were talking to a 10 year old and then I might be able to understand it because remember I am a numpty when it comes to this hence the 'trying to fix' title of the videos :-)

    • @lynzoido
      @lynzoido 5 лет назад +1

      @@Mymatevince Vince! No worries here - i'll explain. Main thing is - it WILL beep even if there's no DIRECT continuity. So, some circuits have like 123ohm resistance - in diode mode it WILL beep and you may erroneously think it's a short! So, better to get/build/buy a 'continuity tester' - those are very popular with car mechanics! Same principle but it will only light up/beep if there's DIRECT continuity. Also, diode test mode is hit and miss because some circuits are polarized, so it will, say, beep when probing a-probe to point a and b-probe to point b, but won't if you swap the probes around! Any questions - i'll be happy to answer! LOVE your videos. It's a mix of nostalgia, floorwork (i still do stuff on the floor sometimes) and useful tips/exp! Thanks again bro! No offense meant :)
      ps. in ohm mode - short probes one to another, notice the resistance displayed (vary with diff models of meters and probes). This is a 'short/continuity' with your setup.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад

      Thanks, so on my Surpeer AV4 it does have a continuity mode which is the one I use (the one that beeps) so is this definitely different than the dedicated continuity testers on eBay/Amazon? When I short my leads on the Ohm setting it reads 00.21 Ohms - 00.14 Ohms (varies). If I was using this setting across a circuit board which may have slightly corroded pads my continuity setting would still beep but what range on the Ohms settings would still indicate a short, for example if it read 00.90 Ohms or 1.50 Ohms would this still indicate a short. This is what confuses me as it won't always read 00.21 Ohms but it is still a short but perhaps a dirty one. Hope this makes sense, it does in my head:-)

    • @lynzoido
      @lynzoido 5 лет назад +1

      @@Mymatevince 1. sub-1ohm resistance is a virtual short, also even expensive meters sometimes struggle in sub-ohm range. 2. 1.5ohm is not a short technically. corrosion and such can really mess with digital circuits because of that (minus the trivial corrosion of in voltage parts/connectors). 1.5ohn is a load, not a short. 3. at 20:36 if my eyes are correct i see 'diode' sign displayed on the mm screen. i checked the manual for your meter and it said that you have to press 'orange' select button after setting the big switch to this mode, until 'waves' pictorgram is displayed. this should be dedicated 'continuity mode' of your mm. not the 'diode' icon one. 4. diode mode can be used as a basic cont.test but ONLY when dealing with wiring and such. not for testing boards and such.
