This is a good example of how Simon was such an integral part in the sound of the Cure. I can't imagine them having the success they did without him. Not taking anything away from any of the other band members. I like Robert's singing and think his writing is genius.
Actualmente no tocaría nada. Saludos de ES.
I think Simon is a very important part of The Cure. That said when The Cure started having real commercial success was in the period 1983/84 when Simon was out of the band.
Me encanta cómo toca y baila Simon.
Their most under-rated song. But a fan favourite - a riff you can’t rid your head of from the second it starts, that just builds and builds like all the best (semi )instrumentals…
That year I went to their show in Barcelona. Great! On November 10th this year 2022 I went too. Great! The Cure is the band I've never missed. Since the 80's . Love them! And this song is so gooooood!!!. Long live The Cure! 😎🖤
For my money it doesn't get any better than the cure in orange when it comes to taped live performances, but they nailed this great song from The Head On The Door here
Frankly guys... Jason leaves a lot to be desired. But also let's face it: unless he decides to leave the band or something really bad happens to him (not that I wish it) he'll stay till the end of The Cure' days.
gob711 I totally agree this my fav version of push the drum beats are ace on this sounds ace give credit were it is due half the people putting down Jason problies never tried drumming themselves.
It's not like Cooper sucks, but he's definitely NO Boris Williams. Listen to this version and then immediately follow it by the same song done in 1986 in Orange. THEN you'll see why people make the anti-Cooper comments.
I mean I get it. But even if over a period of 10 years a drummer changed, so did the whole band. People like to blame it on Jason but they need to realize no band is going go sound exactly the same after 10 years, let alone now 40. Many factors change, like band memebers, instruments used, and the quality of the audio.
Louis BONNET I don’t want more from anyone. People are who they are and that’s perfectly cool.
To Chris Johnson: I think that it was a bad manipulation of my Phone, walking and listen music in the same time. I am Cure's fan. I am sorry. I respect every body.
Louis BONNET no problem! I wasn’t intending to suggest you were disrespectful in any way. (I’d blame my phone, but that one was ALLLLLLLL me. LOL) I was only meaning to say that I wasn’t. I chose my words poorly. For that, I do apologize. This all reminds me, I need to dust off the VHS and watch The Cure In Orange. 😁
To understand why Perry smiles to Robert at 1:00 you just have to count: 1,2,3,4-1,2,3,4-1234, then jason fucks up and goes one hit too large on the fill 1,2,3,4,5! Nobody notices really ..except them ..
I love The Cure but Jason is just horrendous in this performance of Push, guys. Go listen to the 1986 (Cure in Orange) version of this song and you'll immediately hear the difference. This song should not be slow and plodding. I saw them last year in Dallas and they were great and all, but the drumming was still pretty bad. Jason just doesn't seem to have the chops for this kind of music. Ironically, he is the longest lasting Drummer of the Cure's long career. As a Cure fan since the beginning...well, at least '82...there is a distinct point in their discography that separates the great stuff from the, "Sure, it's ok, it's the Cure...Oh, I like that song...next!" stuff. And that point is between Boris and Jason. It's like The Original Star Wars Trilogy and the Prequels, there's some neat stuff in the Prequels but as a whole they are not great movies. Another way to put it is - I know every song from every album up to, and including Wish. After that I could point out some songs I liked from each album but I don't know them all that well because they just aren't as good and the plodding drums of Jason Cooper are a big reason for that. I know a little of the backstory - Williams wanted to do Jazz stuff, Robert couldn't hold on to him and, as someone else said in this forum, Jason is kind of a Yes Man for Robert. Perhaps he was emotionally bruised by the loss of Williams, because losing a good drummer SUCKS! I don't blame Jason for his shortcomings, but I do blame Robert for keeping him around.
Oddly, it was the absence of Boris which taught me what a difference a drummer makes. Just listen to the opening of the Blondie song "Dreaming"... it's like a Phd thesis on the subject.
I agree that Jason sounds more relaxed than in the past 12 years! but his drum fills sound so conventional, nothing compared to what Boris did. Besides, there is a reason why Boris is in the list of one of the most influential drummers in music today.. and Jason is not.
@colico14 @dougdavefresh its a gibson (judging by the headstock), but its styled like a gretsch. a regular 335 gibson would have a much smoother tone then this (less shimmer, more mid-range). I think this guitar sounds good for The Cure though
@7d7e7f7 Have you ever heeard the other Cure drummers? Perhaps if Cure had hired Sisters of Mercy's Doktor Avalanche it wouldn't sound so bad as it is with Jason.
Nice bit of fullness added on this version with (is that a Gibson Les Paul, right?) The earlier versions has him playing a Stratocaster... Strat's a bit more crisp... This was also accentuated by the more aggressive bass playing... Earlier versions have him a little more inspired to sing what must have been a fresher song for him being still rather new...
...great drumming Jason!...wth are people saying then? I guess they can't get out of the 80's...hello that is over 20 yrs ago....and what is that dress Simon is wearing...and love that Roger is there...
This is 1996! and he is replicating Boris's playing. The sound was inherited from Boris too. BUT 13 years later he is sounding bad and with the new Cure songs he showed us that his drum compositions are of very low quality and his style doesn't fit a band like The Cure. That's why he has so many detractors.
of course The Cure was a mega gand when Boris was behind the drums. Compare how Boris moved all his body feeling the flow and rhythm of the songs.. and then watch Jason.. he is static and lifeless.. sorry but The Cure was not the same since Boris left...
hahaha Jason mistaken at 1:00??? you're crazy, he's absolutely perfect in his timing, actually it's the others trying to keep up with HIM. Too bad they ruined Jason's powerful sound, even when I like Boris best I have so much respect for Jason's drumming, he's awesome, but some jerk ruined his sound.
stevobath Absolutely right! It's not the drummer! it's the sound that Robert wants for the band, have you listened to the new Entreat Plus? the drums sound exactly as they sound since Jason plays live, Robert killed the powerful drum sound that lasted only until the Swing Tour, why the fuck would he do something like that we'll never know. But as fat as Jason as a drummer he's badass and has a lot of skills which unfortunately cannot be appreciated with his crappy sound and horrible zildjian efx cymbals and natal poor drum sound... he should return to Yamaha or DW and his powerful K dark zildjians.
Jp Inzaghi I feel sorry for Jason in that he is rather stuck. I get sick of people whining on about Boris. As you say, Jason is a very good drummer & there's no way Robert Smith would have a below par drummer for nearly 20 years! I've even heard people say Lol was a better drummer! I mean, can you imagine Lol playing 3 1/2 hour sets? He was very limited as a drummer but it suited early Cure stuff. Minimalist & very basic. It's nice to see someone else who understands the whole Boris/Jason thing! Still my fave band by far whoever drums!
@ajittffcure I the run-of-of the-mill I play 5 instruments guy. There is nothing wrong with Jason's drumming, I have no idea where the fantasy complaints originate? I can say for sure there is nothing in the comments that suggest "reality based" warranted criticism. I'd like to hear some drummers say something constructive instead of just wanting to stay in the past!
One of my favorite songs of all time. Still love the Cure.
This is a good example of how Simon was such an integral part in the sound of the Cure. I can't imagine them having the success they did without him. Not taking anything away from any of the other band members. I like Robert's singing and think his writing is genius.

Simply love Robert Smith and his voice, the way he moves on stage. Love this song
It's the drumming added to the dynamic guitarre and bass parts that makes this so speciale.
My fav Cure song. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Robert. We love you.
Love the bass-line on this track - goes great with the melodic guitar riffs too.
Their most under-rated song. But a fan favourite - a riff you can’t rid your head of from the second it starts, that just builds and builds like all the best (semi )instrumentals…

Love the over powered bass guitar in this love it so much.
Great tune ...wish it 1996 again
Best song ever!! ❤
Simons Bass Lines are perfect
I was there 🎸🙌🏻🎸
For my money it doesn't get any better than the cure in orange when it comes to taped live performances, but they nailed this great song from The Head On The Door here
The Cure for ever! ❤
I love this song and Jason fricking rockin out on drums ! THE CURE BEST BAND EVER !!
nessa música meu coração se estrasalhou, ow sdds, eu tava ae bem na frente.
THE CURE is timeless
thank you so much for posting this. like strawberries and cream, it's the only way, it's the only way to be.
I miss the era of long instrumental intros

Love this ❤
What a neat picture of the way things were.
OMG Perry's smile *_*
i love this song!! :D
great drums btw!
i dont know why but this song reminds me 90's and childhood
Frankly guys... Jason leaves a lot to be desired. But also let's face it: unless he decides to leave the band or something really bad happens to him (not that I wish it) he'll stay till the end of The Cure' days.
My favorite Cure song...doesnt sound right with keyboards.
and get over Jason already. Robert picked him...thats good for me.
Great reply! Robert picked him for a reason!

i know a great song when i hear one, thanks linda for givin us this song, hope ya are well kidda, roo.
okay but can we talk about the SKIRTS. they look amazing.
the skirts are excellent, I think Perry and Simon can afford them even now. we'd be biting our lips...or no?❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
grande canzone mitico robert
The song starts at 0:44 . . . . for those of us with Attention Deficit Disorder.
Todo un fenómeno
I think Jason gets it wrong at 1:00, which makes Perry smile to Robert.

Eu estava nesse show no Rio em 1996.

I just noticed the other Guitarist is left handed lol.
Notice that the drums played an important role in the ¨Cure sound¨.

I absolutely agree. He's been their weakest point since he joined. But as it went on he got good actually especially in the Trilogy concert.
I agree, Boris was always able to bridge the Cure’s dance leanings to it’s rock. Jason is very good, just not right
I agree to 100/%

yeah in the 80ties was this so powerfull,to slow,no drive, weak,so sad

@nunozr and the lack of the DATs and extra keyboard sounds to help Jason.

Nah, that's a semi-hollowbody Gibson-like a Chet Atkins or something, I believe. This version sounds like hell. Slow as molasses. No shimmer or punch.
@7d7e7f7 Have you ever heeard the other Cure drummers? Perhaps if Cure had hired Sisters of Mercy's Doktor Avalanche it wouldn't sound so bad as it is with Jason.
Oh right Mtv used to present good music. Good times
Rio de Janeiro, Hollywood Rock
@ajittffcure
But in current years has he shown he is a good drummer?
Take a look at Push in '08 or '09...
@The1FuckOffs Its not a rumour then, they really used to play music videos?

I decided this was The Cure that started a #metoo
Robert is unique and very talented but somehow this sounds like a cover band .or a live band with some session musicians playing a classic .
cheers!!
Calichenao it's because he appears to be off his ass drunk
He often plays without much feeling. almost as if he's playing things off a page. I admit he did quite well here though

Ahahahaha, years and years of wonderful music, then comes a bad drummer and destroied everything

Mintcaroctober YES. he totally is Mintcaroctober
It's called "Push", not "Drag"... I prefer the faster "Orange version", but that's just me :)
All the version with Jason is slower. From the edge of the deep green sea, disintegration, fascination street, especially.
