I was struck by this list as being guitarists from bands that the editors liked as opposed to great guitarists.
I've been watching guitarists review this list and you're the first I've seen acknowledge Michael Schenker. Not a mainstream name to the general public, but a hugely influential hard rocker whose melodic canvas is simply fabulous.
One of my absolute favorites since I was a kid.
Frank Gambale, Michael Hedges, Ty Tabor, Ray Gomez, Bill Nelson, Pat Thrall, Hank B Marvin! The list goes on forever 😄
Bill Nelson's playing in Be Bop Deluxe is an unsung hero of electric guitar.
For the type of music I listen to most Michael Hedges was a gamechanger. As was Preston Reed... Davey Graham...
St. Vincent is ahead of David Gilmour. You know the guy who , according to Rolling Stone, has the greatest guitar solo in history.
She’s ahead of prob a top 3 most inspiring guitar players ever. That’s crazy. I don’t know a single song of hers and Floyd has ruled for over 50 years

St.Vincent is 26 and Slash is 105... You know, the guy with more iconic riffs and solos than anyone on the list (except Page)! You know the guy who revived the Gibson Les Paul at a time when everyone was playing super strats!
I didn't see Rick Derringer on the list (maybe I missed him?). A childhood favorite of mine!
I love rock and the blues and get that it is Rolling Stone, but a little surprised that Andres Segovia and Tommy Emmanuel didn't make it. Were there any classical guitarists on there?
I was determined not to look at this list because I knew it would make me insane, but I had no idea how much! It left me speechless. I still can’t comprehend how it was even put together.
Like this:
1) Google "great guitarists" and create a list of guitarists in order.
2) Remove some white men from the list.
3) Google "average guitarists that aren't white men" and add them randomly in to the list.
Tommy Bolin should be on there for his work on Billy Cobhams spectrum album alone. That album was one of the inspirations for Jeff Beck to move into a Rock/Jazz Fusion direction.
No he shouldn't. Geez, I hope you don't work Rolling Stone too... Tommy Bolin was very talented, but not one of the Top 250 guitarists.
Considering Smoke On the Water has probably been heard in every guitar shop in the world Ritchie Blackmore deserves to be much higher than 75!
Chuck Berry at number 2 is a joke.
My benchmark for these lists is T-Bone Walker. Hugely influential. If someone did something for the first time with an electric guitar, odds are it was him. Didn’t see him on the list.
He's on the list at #65. Rolling Stone said he created the guitar solo as we know it. If that's the case you'd think he'd be higher.

I really missed Allan Holdsworth, Joe Pass, John Scofield, Ralph Towner, Mick Goodrick, Al Dimeola, John Abercrombie, Steve Morse, Paco De Lucia, Andrés Segovia, Silvio Rodriguez, Egberto Gismonti, Jim Hall, Steve Khan, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, George Benson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wayne Krantz, Pat Martino, Phil Miller, Mike Miller and Jeff Baxter on that list.
"Rolling Stone published its original list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists in 2011. It was compiled by a panel of musicians, mostly older classic rockers. Our new expanded list was made by the editors and writers of Rolling Stone. This one goes to 250."
IOW - guitar players, let alone musicians, didn't compile this "expanded" list. Probably millennial/Gen X er's who wanted to "update" it based on popularity...not proficiency...names their readership would recognize.

Al Di Meola's Elegant Gypsy album earned him a place in the hall of fame in my opinion. I can still listen to that album from front to back - and it still sounds as fresh as it did 40 years ago. And Rolling Stones Jokeazine does not include him?! This list is more of a Gen Z diversity, equity and inclusion DEI list of guitarists.
Ever since RS trashed Clapton in the early 70s, RS has been the permanent repository for the dilettante's consistent lack of respect and appreciation for the entire rock genre. I mean come on ! Every musician I've ever known has always regarded RS as the nadir of of legitimate musical commentary. When did you ever see an article written by an actual guitarist? All those years.. All their copy has always been penned by thesaurus-toting failed AA English dropouts, who wouldn't know a heartbreaking riff or chord if they fucked it. . .? I don't get it. Kinda funny really. Everybody knows that Wenner was one of the biggest phonies in all of American culture. Surely we didn't miss that too, right? Why are we even giving them this much attention???
Hey, I'm a supporter of diversity, equity, and inclusion, but there were a lot of worthy guitarists IMO who should have been on the list.

Rolling Stone is not a serious magazine, its Jan Wenner's after all.
I miss Alvin Lee, Gary Moore, Paul Kossoff, Michael Leonard “Hollywood Fats”, Lenny Breau, Domenique Troiano, Bill Nelson, Trevor Rabin, Robin Trower, Peter Frampton, Eric Bell, Martin Barre…I could do a parallel list 😂
Lenny Breau was a major influence to all of the Nashville players!

This list should be called The Top Rock/Pop/ Blues -rock Guitarists. No mention of jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk, flamenco, etc. guitarist. The beauty of the guitar is that it can be used in almost all genres of music.

I share your frustrations; I like most of those on the list, but don't understand why RS rates their guitar skills so highly. BTW, I couldn't gauge the polarity of your dismay at Andy Summers in at 250. Guessing you think he should be higher?
LOVE your list! By the way I’m just an amateur drummer, but I’m SO happy you brought up Terry Kath! For me , he’s in the top 10 along with Luke and many others. How do feel about Jon Herrington, Drew Zingg, Jay Graydon, Chris Pinnick? Thanks Chris
Forgot two major players from Argentina : Pappo Napolitano and the legendary Luis Alberto Spinetta. Pappo was a R n R beast kind of like Tony Iommi mixed with Lemmy. Spinetta was a unique writer and guitar player who kept evolving with different sounds and collaborations writing 375 + songs and 31 albums.
Petrucci, Govan, Holdsworth, and Yngwie.....just those four omissions make that list irrelevant. Forgot about Al Dimeola. That is a bad omission. As is Terry Kath, Neal Schon, Michael Schenker...man, lots of bad omissions.
Glad to hear you mention the always overlooked Terry Kath. But what about Maury Muehleisen?
There's guitar players who every serious guitar player know ( Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Vai, Satch, Eric Johnson, Segovia, Fernando Sor, Paco Delucia, Yngwie, etc.) and most of the fans at their concerts are guitar players because they are guitar player inspirations and innovators! Then there's guitar players who are part of the band and not the main attraction or as appealing to an aspiring guitar player.. You like the band and listen to the songs as a whole, not just to here the individual guitarist of that band. That's why the majority of their fans that pay to see them live, are music lovers and not musicians. The proof is in the fans and novice to expert guitar players of the world. We all know who should and should not be on some dumb RS poll, it's a publicity stunt for more exposure to RS Mag. I appreciate this vid Jeff and agree with you 100%. The players not on the list arguably make a better list. Ironic.
Diversity and inclusivity made the new list different. Joni Mitchell #9 and Eric Clapton #35 says it all. Whenever we don't clearly define what we mean by "greatest" then ranking becomes almost meaningless. But still fun. Edge is a good example....fun to listen to, but fewer skills than many others ranked lower. And ya, Geo Benson being left off, wow. The worst omission? Joe Pass. Poison Ivy? Knows 3 chords. My fav player? Chris Buck. The best? Mateo Mancuso, best solo ever: Elliot Easton, Most surprising omission: Tom Schultz. All these last 4 left off. Thanks for vid....always fun.
I think Peter Green is on the list after all (62), but of course I agree he should be on there twice 🙃

I really would appreciate if you ´ d consider doing a whole episode on Chris Whitley. He is such an underrated artist, but what a genius in songwriting, lyrics, guitar open tuning exploration. I disagree with the top four, although consider all of them to be among the greatest. Frankly, a person's top four will depend on one's music preference (rock, blues, classical, flamenco, fingerstyle, etc.)
I would have Jimi Hendrix, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, and Michael Hedges as my Top 5.
Not sure why so many people are so upset about what Rolling Stone thinks. They are irrelevant in this day and age but I'm fairly sure this list was compiled by non guitar playing reporters. What always surprises me about these lists is the number of guitarists who barely know what a guitar solo is. Surely you should be a fairly decent soloist to get on this list. Joni Mitchell number 9? Give me a break.
Yeah. I don’t care as I said, just fun to talk about. A list of guitarist not by guitarist.
I've never been a regular reader of RS, but I'll give them credit for inspiring lots of enjoyable posts and commentary, so I'm going to chime in. First, she didn't make the list this time, but I predict Molly Miller will in a future list. Her spare, yet funky, covers of classic rock songs are a treat. as is here jazz trio. Second, Jeff McErlain's riffing on list-worthy jazz guitarists, I thought of Howard Roberts and Ted Greene because of their accomplishments as teachers of professional guitarists. And finally, about methodology, I think this exercise should be grouped by categories and then list either the top 20-50 per category, depending on the popularity of the genre. I'd also like to see a category for the first-generation electric guitarists, especially for country music and western swing. There could also be a meta-category for continental or national focus. Maybe RS should just focus on Top Guitarists in the USA and leave the other countries to other publications. But there current approach is to idiosyncratic and too much about fashion and trends, rather than the test of time. Just have a separate category for trendy, but potentially impactful, guitarists. Blending everything together is a cop-out.
Gary moore should always atleast be in the top ten

Jeff your spot on. I'm biased because I love Phish but Trey Anastasio is a top 25. (53 I believe on this list) I invite anyone who doubts me to check out some Phish shows from the early/ mid 90's. Machine gun Trey... I gotta go to bat for my guy!

How and why has nobody even mentioned Synyster Gates (Brian Haner)???? Technical prowess, creativity, musicality, innovation; all top tier! Even if you don’t think he belongs in the top 250, does anyone else find it odd that nobody is even mentioning him?
Remember the Guitar Player magazine Readers' Polls from the 1980s and 1990s? And the special list of players that won five times and were no longer eligible and put in an elite category (or "all time greats"). At least those elite ones should be on there. Steve Morse is the first that came to mind for me. Joe Pass and Robben Ford, too.
I kinda suspect quite a few people on the list would say take me off the list when they see who's been left out.

i guess the conclusion i would make about this "list" (and GOAT lists in general) is: the greatest guitarists of all time according to "who"?...to most people/players, it's obvious who the great players are, who are the most influential, and which ones "made" the bands they played in...but, everyone's list can vary wildly, regardless...i do agree that some of the omissions cited here are "criminal"...
I would have more respect for a list of top guitarists if some-one like Pete Pardo of Sea Of Tranquility did one.
The absence of Allan Holdsworth on any greatest guitarist list is egregious by any measure. Not only was he extraordinary and innovative on a level that other guitar players only dream of, but virtually any guitar player you can name out of a list of 250 would readily agree.
I believe this is a reaction to Janns comments on his book. No Nugent or Joan Jett after the fight they had over the last time

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I find Frank Marino's 3 hours (or more) concerts the most entertaining, and he plays across many genres. Marty Friedman and Zakk Wylde have good things to say about him.... a top improvisor over any chord progression, most exciting playing style, most brilliant and confident technique and soloing that bristles with intensity, etc.
Ritchie Blackmore's low rating is maybe because of his past moodiness. If Clapton, Beck, and Page are in the top 10, so is Blackmore.

All the Rolling Stones mentions of great guitar players are in one style only "ROCK". To me, a great guitar player is one who can play in any genre, like Rock, Metal, country, Blue Grass, Classical, Jazz, Flamenco, and popular. The only ones I know who can play in all those styles, with either an acoustic, or electric guitar, are in the country, and blue grass fields, not the Rolling Stones picks. Here are my picks of great Guitar players--Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Tommy Emanuel, Billy Strings, Chet Atkins, and Les Paul. They all could read, write, and understand musical theory to perfection, and play any style with the best of any field. Would love to hear Jimi Hendricks play Malaguana like Roy Clark...Billy Strings, a new comer, can play country, blue grass, flat pick, and "heavy metal rock" to perfection, and sing with his playing. Such variety of music . Now those guys are guitar players, who can play "music", the're not noise makers.
To me rating Jimmie Hendrix as the greatest guitar ever, tells me you don't have a musical melody link anywhere in your ears. Great Rock player ok but nowhere a "great guitar player". First Hendrix couldn't read, write or understand musical theory, he was stuck in one style of playing (Rock) any other genre he was like a fish out of water, and to get attention to his noisy mind numbing renditions, he relied on electronic noise making assistance, or smashing, or putting his guitar on fire in a closing attention getting lick. Now that's real talent. Good grief you couldn't sing to, dance to, relax to, any of Hendrix
mind numbing licks unless you were high on a some form of a psychedelic fix. His voice was like a drunken frog, looking for a mate, which blended into perfection, to that screeching Hendrix sound. UGH!!!

I listened to one song they did with Steve Vai. I thought it was pretty good but that's one song.
No Paul Jackson Jr. and no Tommy Tedesco, the list seems to ignore session players unless they were in a popular band.
My 'missing" list: Warren Cuccurullo, Trevor Rabin, Rusty Anderson, Steve Morse, Guthrie Govan, Bill Dillon, Hiram Bullock, Al DiMeola and OMG, how could Alan Holdsworth not be there?!

i think these list are silly,but I think it would be easier to talk about people who shouldn't be on the list than who should be on it because there have been thousands of great guitar player to choice from.
I respect BB King's opinion that Jeff Healey was the greatest guitarist that he ever saw live.
