I’m Cuban American. I’ve heard these stories all my life. The crazy thing about Castro’s ice cream obsession is that Coppelia, his personal ice cream complex, was so large and so well equipped that it actually went on to become the Cuban version of Blue Bell or Haagen-Dazs. It is the national brand of ice cream over there. So large and so popular that many Cuban immigrants who moved to Miami have opened up ice cream stores with Coppelia in the name. You’ll see them from time to time. That is absolutely bonkers.

So I can confirm his obsession, part of my family came from Cuba and one story I was told went like this: they’d be in class and at the end they’d tell the students to pray to god for ice cream, they would and nothing would happen. Then they’d tell the students to pray to Fidel Castro for ice cream and they’d wheel in a cart of ice cream. Not only was he obsessed with dairy he used it to manipulate children.

hey Terry, this is a thought of mine, but knowing that Castro was Argentinian, and the great acceptance that products with milk have here, I find his obsession slightly reasonable. Here, we have ice cream shops, called Heladerías. They aren't one block sized, but we have a lot of them around and they are super duper common here. Although, in the 50s / 60s the ice cream wasn't that popular here. However, the story is awesome. Luv u terry

Maybe I couldn't keep it up every night forever, but when trying my hardest I can at least finish a full tub for like dessert on my birthday or something. And on the occasions I have gone that far, I'm usually not entirely full and could still have more. I don't just do it with ice cream either. I tear through cheese bricks and cream cheese containers very fast. What can I say? I'm a 2nd generation Dutch-Canadian(my pakè or grandpa grew up in Holland and moved at some point).
