Excellent vid! I'll never enter a hard Enduro or fling a 10k eurobike off a large drop, but I practice your techniques as a 62yr old on a 20yr old Kawi. Much love from WA state
You have said everything as always. Thanks for what you do for riders Rich. 🤙🏼 Keep practicing is the key. Being happy is normal but never stop working. 👊🏼✊🏼
There are parallels to "drills" in other sports..... I grew up ski racing. One thing I never understood till long after my athletic opportunities were gone, was how EASY it is to get very good. It just takes hard work, and focus. You have to know what your weaknesses are, and work on them till they are strengths. The way you do this is through Drills Drills Drills. Once you know your weak point, you have to know which drill will fix it, and make it a strength. You have to know how to do the drill, and you do it right till you are a master. Then you keep doing it. In the alpine ski racing world (a sport very similar to MX in its sheer dynamics and energy) world class skiers, multi time Olympic gold medalists still do drills drills drills, even long after they are world or Olympic champs. To this day...Mikaela Shiffrin always falls back on doing drills to keep her technique on point. Once I understood this, and become dedicated to spending probably 60% of my time on the slopes doing drills, my skiing improved at a phenomenal rate. I know it has nothing to do with Off-road riding, but here is 4 time World Cup Champion Mikaela Shiffrin talking about the importance and details of "drills". What is important is the mentality and focus. ruclips.net/p/PLdyEYewNX9_iYKVg2AHJkYQ02pW6-x059 After hurting a knee...and being off for 8 weeks, here are what the first days back on the snow look like for one of the best technical skiers to ever compete. Not ripping up a course, or skiing fast, but doing mundane drills. ruclips.net/video/wNbEp1SRVag/видео.html This is what doing years of Drills produces.... ruclips.net/video/UfY0oRwVIR4/видео.html I personally have recently decided to take the same approach to all riding. 60%+ of my time will be spend doing drills.
as a former ski instructor and amateur racer I'm in total agreement and taking it one step further, competency at anything requires drills drills and more drills.
Great comment. Former ski teacher and have always respected Shriffen’s post-injury drills and endless perfection of technique. It’s the same in any sport, no? Like mountain riding on snowmobiles: spent one day doing drills with a guy new to the sport and within two weeks he was better than fellas who have ridden-without ever doing basic drills-for ten years. And now he is having way more fun than them because every ride opens up new possibilities. Adding just a little obsession, even one tiny goal for each ride, makes all these sports endlessly interesting.
I like your thinking regarding mastery. This is getting a bit off subject but what you implied made me think about what one might be able to do if we had eternity. I have friends who think heaven or the afterlife would become boring. On the contrary. Imagine how many things you could master! Thanks for the inspiration. I’m off to practice cone drills. Will be back once I can do it to make a comment about leg length. 😂
Nice video love how simple yet so completely hard at the same time. Will have to set some cones and give it a go. Reminds me of soccer coaching when I was younger. Keep up the good work Rich.
Rich, thank you so much for giving me some stuff to practice. Baby steps for me. You are an amazing rider and your slow speed drill show that you are practicing a lot.
I actually tried this today. It was really hard. At 6', it took me 10 times to get through it. These parking lot drills are everything. They make a huge difference in your balance. I'm getting there Rich. A little at a time. Thank you.
Hi Rich, I've already got the cones (but not the skills yet ...) ! I've bought them some months ago but I didn't figure out that I could practice all those exercises with them , thanks a lot for your videos and teaching !
Great vid mate.. I can attest, the side hill cone drill pays dividends when your coming down a switch back, off camber single track.. made a big difference
Hey Rich. Your videos are awesome. As much info as you share though I think my favorite part of most of them is your dog supervising your progress. It’s awesome. What is the first drill you would recommend for someone who is just getting back to riding after 30 year layoff? Thanks 😊
Yea im one of those short leg riders, bid disadvantage for me. But I totally understand what you said about balance, throttle and clutch control. I don't get to ride my bike at places but I can try and practice these drills in the yard. Thanks for inspiring us man!
Hey Rich, Can you do a video about how to tackle steep climbs that have an axe high "step" at about 3/4 of the way up? a rock ledge or a tree root with a shelf, something that sucks your momentum and makes you want to chop the throttle to keep the front end from launching to the moon.
Man, I do love your teaching! I'm beginning to get a good hold of my 200 KDX💚, thanks to you. I'm offering to my son a QR50 next week for his 4th birthday. What would be your best advice to give him?
Come on with the last one. That’s impossible 😅. Love your videos. I’m tall too it is nice to have long legs for slow wheelies but I’m also more cramped in the cockpit than the shorter guys. The grass isn’t always greener. You got skills 🤘 very inspiring.
Last drill was way cool. I do try and put in some kind of practice when we are out on the trails the only problem is I don't have nearly the time I did 25+:years ago.
i ll try my hardest , just to fail the last one ! the previus 4 , i do practise them every now n' then . . and the results are VISIBLE from the beginning !!
Hey! A have a few questions, wish I could reach out to you. Just got my first bike, extremely interested in Enduro and looking forward to this practice... Really worried about fouling my plug + wearing out my clutch a ton...
Just give her the old Italian tune up out through the field between cone drill reps lol. Keep the revs low during the drills and the clutch will be good to go.
Hey Rich It would be great if you could draw out the cones on paper with dimensions so us mortal riders can try to duplicate your god like control over our machine.
Haha, last one is really impossible :) Even just go straight backwards down the slope is impossible for us mere mortals 🤣 Could you share some drills for mastering it btw?
Ben riding dirt for 36 years and was sorta fast for a while but if you can do even the first 2 you probably won't find too many people showing you up on the trail.
A coach advised me that riding with your friends on Saturday is not practicing. Same as sports teams practice skills during the week before the game on Saturday.
I don`t beleave in mastery only the persuede of mastery. There is no end of the possibilit ys. Could be a quote from Bruce Lee. In my age there defenitly limits I have to accept. Just reasently got punished taking too much risk. Anyhow your teachings are brilliant.
Not that I have the balance and technique for it at the moment, but I think my rear brake disc is too bent to do the backwards roll one 😂 Good video, Rich. I'll have to head over to dick's sporting goods and buy some cones 🤙
Excellent vid! I'll never enter a hard Enduro or fling a 10k eurobike off a large drop, but I practice your techniques as a 62yr old on a 20yr old Kawi. Much love from WA state
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your relentless focus on the fundamentals. Super motivated to put cones in the yard.
Hello from Ukraine, I often watch your videos✋👍
🇺🇦 I appreciate the support!! 🙌
You have said everything as always. Thanks for what you do for riders Rich. 🤙🏼 Keep practicing is the key. Being happy is normal but never stop working. 👊🏼✊🏼
Much appreciated! Hard work makes you happy! simple as that!
BACKWARDS cone weave?! Seriously Rich, you are a sick, sick man! haha
Duuude that backwards weave is next level! Added to the drill practice list!!
Thanks dude! You’ll like this week’s episode😜
You make the best tutorial/ tips videos Rich. Keep em coming! Thank you
Thanks for watching watching!! 🙌🙌

Outstanding Lessons - I am very grateful for it!

You have the skills. Great work.
great tips thanks Rich, keep up the great work
Thanks for watching!!
Appreciate sharing your efforts.
Thanks for watching!
Did the first drill in my yard yesterday. Was a great workout. Thanks Rich. You rock!
Nice video love how simple yet so completely hard at the same time. Will have to set some cones and give it a go. Reminds me of soccer coaching when I was younger. Keep up the good work Rich.
Very impressive skills!! Fun to watch.
Rich, thank you so much for giving me some stuff to practice. Baby steps for me. You are an amazing rider and your slow speed drill show that you are practicing a lot.
Thanks again Rich. Nobody with better lessons. My riding has improved tremendously and you are to thank. So thank you!!
Thanks for watching!

Excellent video!
Thanks!!
dude, you are my hero. I am 52 with a 05 crf 250x. thank you
Wow that's awesome man. I'm sure gonna try 😌 🙂
Great vid mate.. I can attest, the side hill cone drill pays dividends when your coming down a switch back, off camber single track.. made a big difference
You got that right!!
Awesome Tutorial!
🙌🙌
Great riding, I could smell your clutch cooking on that last drill!
It doesn't do anything to the clutch.
I do similar drills down a set of steps. Also, anytime I come across poles, cones or spaced obstacles I do some maneuvering drills.
Thx 🙏👍

Great explanation & tips.
Sadly many won’t accept that time spent on drils improves your trail etc experience & lowers stress.
You’re exactly right! The video seems to not be getting as many views as I hoped. I’m willing to bet that is the reason!
Also, you need to set your Ego aside to learn.
Many don’t want to do that.
Backwards cone weave?!? Oh.. my... lord!!! How did this even become a thought in your head?
Haha! Always thinking of new drills!
I will set these up and do them after work
Hey Rich, Can you do a video about how to tackle steep climbs that have an axe high "step" at about 3/4 of the way up? a rock ledge or a tree root with a shelf, something that sucks your momentum and makes you want to chop the throttle to keep the front end from launching to the moon.
Awesomeness!!!
These vids are great
Rich must have the worlds most patient dog .
When is the Canadian teaching tour starting?
Haha! I hope to make it happen!
You're the man.
🤘🤘
Awesome content, the basics are huge number 3 is a must know I practice it all the time.also known as a “gs garage”
"I don't believe in mastery, only the pursuit of mastery." 🤯🤯🤯
That's pretty bad ass.
Thanks for watching!
Much ❤ from 🇨🇦 👍👍
Thanks for the support!
awesome
👌 awesome. I got some work to do
Get after it!! 🙌
Very good! And Your dog is always there!!! \○/
i love that quote about mastery
Thank you!!

That’s awesome. I’d recommend these drills in a nice open space!

Master 🙏
🙌
Honnestly what you give us is "caviar" Thank you so much from France
Caviar. That’s a first! Thank you!!
The doggo was just waiting for the master to finish with practice 😂
The last one is "mission impossible"! LOL
Haha! It was a tough one!
Come on with the last one. That’s impossible 😅. Love your videos. I’m tall too it is nice to have long legs for slow wheelies but I’m also more cramped in the cockpit than the shorter guys. The grass isn’t always greener. You got skills 🤘 very inspiring.
Dude that was sick. I just bought cones. Gonna be a while before I even attempt the reverse weave.
Haha! That’s one takes a lot of work!! Thanks for watching!
Last drill was way cool.
I do try and put in some kind of practice when we are out on the trails the only problem is I don't have nearly the time I did 25+:years ago.
Thanks for watching! Every bit counts!
i ll try my hardest , just to fail the last one !
the previus 4 , i do practise them every now n' then . .
and the results are VISIBLE from the beginning !!
They help!
What ratio do you mix your fuel? And is the suspension soft enough for soft Enduro?
Hell yeah!
🙌
Brilliant video, do you ride trials? I think you would be good at it too. 😎👍
I ride a bit of trials. Not the best! But I make due!
🔥
where I can get these special cones ? ;)
Rich
Did you up grade your front suspension on the beta ?
Nope
Hey! A have a few questions, wish I could reach out to you. Just got my first bike, extremely interested in Enduro and looking forward to this practice... Really worried about fouling my plug + wearing out my clutch a ton...
03 KTM 250 SX ~ I know it's not the best to learn on, did a flywheel weight - just what I can afford, lol.
That bike will work great! Focus on as little throttle as possible. Make you have your Jetting right and you will be fine.
Just give her the old Italian tune up out through the field between cone drill reps lol. Keep the revs low during the drills and the clutch will be good to go.
What goggle set up are you using?
I'm using the X2D Ride Co googles. They have some awesome anti fog stuff.
would you recommend these drills on a KTM 890 adventure or any other bigger ADV bike?
Absolutely
@@IRCTireUSAMoto Awesome - thank you!
Can you do this this stuff on a 450? I have the 450 because I plan on running a timbersled on it next winter, plus I'm well over 200 lbs.
Absolutely!
Perfect, I've got 8 miles of slow balance practice under my belt, 10 hours, and I still can't balance the bike standing still 🤣
The backwards cone weave is something I could see myself doing on accident lol.
Do you have a radiator guard and if so what kind
Bullet proof designs 👍
👍👍
This looks so much above my level, so I guess I’m not like 95% of your students 🤣🤣🤣
Well, now I know why some guy say their clutch lasts half a year, and mine lasts for over a decade😂
Hey Rich
It would be great if you could draw out the cones on paper with dimensions so us mortal riders can try to duplicate your god like control over our machine.
Haha, last one is really impossible :) Even just go straight backwards down the slope is impossible for us mere mortals 🤣 Could you share some drills for mastering it btw?
Just getting comfortable rolling back is the goal. 🙌
Out of curiosity due to your comment... how tall are you?
6’1”
We all need a Trials Bike
Trials is good!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Prop’s
does the rear brake come into it in exercise 1 or am i going to burn out clutch if i use it?
You won’t burn a clutch. I recommend learning to use both as well as one or other. All about control!
Backward cone weave😅
Add a comment.............Awesome.
Thank you!

Good plan! Get the first three 100%🙌
You didn't Enter the "This Episode right here".
I’m not sure why it didn’t work for you. Sometimes RUclips is weird it should be there
Do you realize Rich that if all dirt bike riders rode like you and me no one would hate dirt bike riders like they do problem solved .
Maybe! Thanks for watching!!
I can do the last one but I can’t do the 4th.😭
This man has never met a personal pronoun he doesn't like. Or tout.
I’m scared to commit to standing my bike up all the way to pivot turn. I always end up doing little hops.
