  • Hi everyone, today I will talk about a common misconception of piano practice, which is that slow practice is great, but sometimes, it can give you a false sense of security with technical passages. This is why I recommend playing at faster than half tempo speeds to test the hand better.

Great advice! The issue is exactly what you mentioned at the end of the video: practicing too slowly leaves a lot more time “free”, which usually leads to a lot of unnecessary movements. These movements, often unconscious, can become a habit that prevents speed and fluidity at the right tempo.

I would like to share a personal experience about this :
I learned how to play the song Black Box Warrior by Will Wood, I had to learn the main melody which is EXTREMELY fast, and needs to be done with the right hand only, and my biggest mistake was to start learning it with two hands, then slowly, learn the left hand, but then I was so used to do it slowly that it took me weeks before managing to do everything at the right speed, trust me you're right and I will probably recommend your channel to my friends too ^^

I started a new journey. I dream myself as if I was living in 1835 and I was a pianist. I was an intermediate piano teacher who gave lessons to his students. Even though I can play most of the pieces on my time I wanted to be able to play the remaining hardest pieces. So I went to music library to buy some etudes. I saw some etudes which were way too easy for me. But there was that one etude album which got my attention. It was the op. 10 12 etudes by Frederic Chopin. I looked at the pages and was in awe! The more I turn the pages more I get excited. I had to see if some of these etudes are playable. I bought without thinking another second.
In home now, just made my coffee, sitting in front of the piano with the Etude album in my hands. I was trying to figure out how to play it fast, how should I declare the fingering... After an hour passed. I just look up and said "Fuck! The 22th bar is out of my reach! Can't even play the first one let alone the other 11 etudes."
Really though how would a pianist react to chopin etudes in 1835?

As a matter of fact, this was the only passage that I never practiced slowly, and I played it fine. The A major scale just before, however, is a completely different story.....
