This is a guilty pleasure for me, watched it a lot as a kid. You left out the best line in the movie. Whiplash: “That’s not fair! They have giant rocks! All we have are these machine guns!!” 😂
I actually love this movie, it has absurdisms all over. From Snidely accidentally turning into a non villain so Dudley having to try and be a bad guy to beat him, Nell being so flakey she’s all in for whoever standing next to her, to the tribal tourist festivals being a parody showboat with non indians complete with a fireworks show. Then finishing with an army with tanks! Really what’s not to love?

Yeah there was a lot of TV adaptions in the 90s- McHale's Navy, Sgt Bilko, Lost in Space, Beverly Hillbillies, Leave it to Beaver, the Brady Bunch movies, etc

19:20 There's a scene in The Outlaw King where Chris Pine is on a horse that falls on its side, he rolls out from under it and jumps into a sword fight. One take, no cuts, no stunt-double and no bad lighting. And he's wearing a dress!
That scene where Eric Idle is excited about Bette Midler was almost certainly ad-libbed, that was 29 years (up to that point) of Monty Python in literally 2 seconds of footage...
Fun fact: The song Sarah Jessica Parker sings around the 6 minute mark is called Indian Love Call. It's from a musical named Rose Marie, with its most famous film version being from 1936, starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy (he plays a Mountie there) The song was a staple of the two as well.
yo critic! i have some interesting notes for this film, as my dad, Hugh Wilson, was the writer, director, and producer. I was even on set in Vancouver for the filming. First off, Brendan was not dads first choice for dudley: that was Dave Coulier, but the studio and casting director wouldnt go for it as his "career had ended", despite regularly delivering his spot on impression of dudley on Full House. But dad's previous movie was Blast from the Past which also starred Brendan, and he liked working with him so much that he offered him the part of dudley. dad hated most comedies, being always critical, but he loved george of the jungle, which i made him take me to the theater to see; thats how he got turned onto Brendan. So, you mentioned dudley getting the chance to do the best of michael winslow: dad also wrote directed and produced the first first Police Academy film. Also, Idle get excited to see Bett Midler: Midler starred in First Wives Club, which was also one of dads movies. we got to keep snydly's golfcart after filming; it had a keg tap and shot dispenser on the back; my sisters boyfriend and his frat bros wrecked it in college- oops. It is important to note: this movie was written and shot to be a film for adults. but, after wrapping, the editor died; somehow, the right to edit the movie defaulted to the late editor's wife who decided it should be a kids movie and cut all the adult humor, kept all the slapstick, and added goofy sound effects. I got to see the directors cut and it was great. there was a lot more risqué humor. and as to whether some jokes are racist- the jokes are funny. as for dad, he won his primetime emmy for best writing in a sitcom for a show called franks place (starring tim reid aka the dad from sister sister and daphne reid aka aunt vivian from fresh prince- my sisters god parents), which became the first show featuring an all black cast to reach national syndication; he also was an honorary member of the NAACP and won several humanitarian awards for his advancement of colored people in media. So funny jokes are funny, i think. my favorite joke is when the "indians" are throwing rocks at snydly and his men, and snydly gets hit with one and says, "thats not fair! theyve got rocks! all we've got are these machine guns." and then a giant boulder comes rolling down the hill. also i made a crown of flowers for SJP and got to drive one of the tanks, both in the same day. and brendan gave me my first drum lesson. anyway, please do one of your comparison videos with the coen bro's legend of buster scrugs and my dads film, rusters rhapsodies, starring tom barringer; both are western comedies about singing cowboys. if you liked the horse work in dudley, the horse work in rustlers will blow you away! love your videos!

When I was a kid I loved this movie (granted I haven't seen it again since then) so hearing Nostalgia Critic tear it a new one in the opening made childhood me start sniffling and sobbing in a corner 🥺
I'll admit, this movie was always a guilty pleasure of mine. Mostly because the last third is just exactly how I imagine a satire of a big Hollywood Dudley Do-right movie but in another movie would be. As in, if there was a movie in which there was a subplot of a Dudley Do-Right movie being made, this would be that movie.
One Last Fact: Corey Burton narrated the movie by doing an imitation of Paul Frees who narrated some of the original The Dudley Do-Right Show (1969) cartoons. (William Conrad was the primary narrator, and Frees subbed in whenever Conrad was overworked.)
I recognize this isn't a good movie, but I honestly have very fond memories of it. That's due to watching it with my late father who just had this sort of humor. He laughed and had the best time with it. Now, I watch the movies he loved and can't help but hear him saying, "Watch this here..." every time something exciting is about to happen. Didn't matter how many times he saw it, he still had the same reactions as if he was seeing it for the first time. Miss that.
Sorry for your loss, your father sounds like a great guy! And any father who can sit through a bad movie with you and still have a good time, is a good father in my book!
In fairness to the Native tribe - Mel Brooks did it first. And I will say, I liked the underlying premise where Snidely effectively used the "Scatter this stolen gold all over for others to find" as a means of money laundering. That *is* a pretty novel concept, and can't say I've seen it done before!
Fun Fact: Brendan Fraser is an American, but his mother was from Canada and he went to school in Toronto. Fraser's great-grandfather was a Mountie, and Fraser based part of his Dudley portrayal on stories from family history.
I swear every time I see Alfred Molina in the movie, I'm almost expecting his Doctor Octopus tentacles to appear and help twirl his mustache... I, I can't even that without giggling a bit😁😆
Saw this movie on VHS long ago, and the one part that stuck with me was that one woman doing a full split and saying "Ow!" with a huge smile on her face. No idea why.
I’ve watched this video a few times over. The ad still catches me completely off guard. I laugh through the entire thing every time. And I still have no idea what Chime is. Thanks, Doug!
Fun fact: before this movie was made, there was a 1992 tv movie of Boris and Natasha and then the live action Rocky and Bullwinkle movie was released a year after Dudley Do-Right
Did he ever acknowledge the sexual harassment which was happening at Channel Awesome? A bunch of the cast left because of it. Doug is a massive douche.
Never saw this movie before! I was more familiar with george of the jungle and the first two mummy movies as a kid. Also the awesome ride at universal studios!! Great review as always Doug!!
17:29 I remember that bit. Snidely asks his henchman "Why am I wearing blue", after Dudley points out he's wearing actual black, and Snidely's in Navy Blue. And wow that Nell's a crazy chick. I liked this movie as a kid, but I knew it was stupid. Endearingly stupid. I also recall the Snidely Whiplash logo on EVERYTHING. Now THAT was a villain who got Branding!
If this movie was called Snidely Whiplash I really wouldn't be surprised. Back in 1992; 8 years before the live action Rocky and Bullwinkle movie premiered there was a movie called Boris and Natasha featuring Sally Kellerman and Dave Thomas in the roles. It did not have Rocky and Bullwinkle at all from what I remember. It also had John Candy in it.
oh man I think I remember seeing this when I was really young. it's a movie whose scenes would randomly pop into my head, but until today I could not for the life of me remember what it was called.
I'm glad that after this movie, Brendan Fraser was picked to star in THE MUMMY. Oh crap, its the opposite: THE MUMMY came out May 2, 1999 DUDLEY DO RIGHT, August 27, 1999.
WTF, I have never watched an episode of Rocky & Bullwinkle, buy 3 weeks ago I watched a video about how a Dudley Do Right short was banned for parodying Smokey the Bear & I ended up watching like 3 dozen Dudley Do Right shorts. I just fell in love with the dead-pan humor, the non-endings, the screw the audience jokes & how half the time the characters would ignore the plot. I watched a couple clips of the movie & it's saving grace is their casting for Snidly Whip Lash, perfect for the role
Yeah i heard about that, it's weird considering Brickleberry had an even more offensive parody of Smokey called Flamey(whose a hedonistic alcoholic jerk)yet they never incurred the wrath of the US Forestry Service. I had a few Rocky and Bulwinkle tapes as a kid so I was excited when the movie came out, my mom loves it and I enjoyed it too, never was as hot on Dudley Do Right though.
Man, I remember having the VHS for this movie when I was five. My mom and I would watch it together. Sure, it's not the greatest movie ever, but I can't help but smile every time I think about it.
I always had a vivid memory of this movie of my childhood when I was 6 or so. I even play this movie and gorge of the jungle back to back on some nights. You reviewing THIS movie of all things was surprising to say the least and was a blast of memories and nostalgia
Dudley Do Right was supposed to be a parody movie, which would’ve been a funny satire of the cartoon, but instead they tried so hard to be George of the Jungle, which that movie was just a fluke it was even successful because Disney was making Tarzan at that time!
I was a kid when this came out and I loved it, I actually saw some of the rocky and bullwinkle stuff thanks to Boomerang, so I knew about Dudley. I watched it a few years aback and it still made me laugh, I dont think its good but i do like and still find it funny. The announcer personally kills me as well.
i randomly remembered you existed the other day, been over a decade so i figured i'd check out your old videos, and it turns out your still making new ones after all this time, looks like i have alot of catching up to do.
The "Indian Love Call" and dance number with the Native Americans are actually very clever nods to the film "Rose-Marie," an operetta where a lady goes in search of her brother with the help of a charming *Canadian mountie* who initially doesn't realize that the escaped murderer and bank robber he's been tasked with bringing to justice is the same man. The corn dance in "Rose-Marie" has aged like a fine cheese. :D
It's weird. I literally JUST rewatched this movie for the first time in years. I can agree it's not perfect, but it's a fun movie and a childhood classic!

I love that my birthday is on a Wednesday this year so I can watch a new Nostalgia Critic episode.
@@maxordman4100 He was the best.
Hi Doug! Thank you for the cameo last month! You made my day. Love you guys🇨🇦❤️
In fairness to the Native tribe - Mel Brooks did it first. And I will say, I liked the underlying premise where Snidely effectively used the "Scatter this stolen gold all over for others to find" as a means of money laundering. That *is* a pretty novel concept, and can't say I've seen it done before!
And by owning all the shops and businesses in a town during a gold rush, that he made, he would have made at least 10x what the gold was worth.
It's funny how we kinda got a modern Dudley Do-Right cartoon with "Fugget About It", seeing as Agent McCool is basically Do-Right but hyper competent.
yeah that show is great
McCool is just pompous
Fun Fact: Brendan Fraser is an American, but his mother was from Canada and he went to school in Toronto. Fraser's great-grandfather was a Mountie, and Fraser based part of his Dudley portrayal on stories from family history.
2:04, Its funny because when I own the film on DVD, this Cartoon played after the Movie as a Bonus Feature
Box Office Bomb: One of the biggest box office derailments of 1999. Budget, $70 million. Box office, $9,974,410.
I swear every time I see Alfred Molina in the movie, I'm almost expecting his Doctor Octopus tentacles to appear and help twirl his mustache... I, I can't even that without giggling a bit😁😆
Nostalgia is strong with this one. It's impossible for me not to love this movie.
Saw this movie on VHS long ago, and the one part that stuck with me was that one woman doing a full split and saying "Ow!" with a huge smile on her face. No idea why.
So this is why Vin Diesel mentions family a lot in the fast and furious movies because he knows Dudley Do-Right is listening
I’ve watched this video a few times over. The ad still catches me completely off guard. I laugh through the entire thing every time. And I still have no idea what Chime is. Thanks, Doug!
Fun fact: before this movie was made, there was a 1992 tv movie of Boris and Natasha and then the live action Rocky and Bullwinkle movie was released a year after Dudley Do-Right
yes I hope Doug reviews that TV movie.
Still the best movie critic on RUclips
Love Nostalgia Critic
@@chasehedges6775I love him too
Did he ever acknowledge the sexual harassment which was happening at Channel Awesome? A bunch of the cast left because of it. Doug is a massive douche.
7:38 feels like this man is looking deep into your soul and found out about all of your secrets
The ideal Nostalgia Critic video is Doug talking about a 90s kid's movie box office bomb, so this is a nice return to form.
Never saw this movie before! I was more familiar with george of the jungle and the first two mummy movies as a kid. Also the awesome ride at universal studios!! Great review as always Doug!!
It's really not bad. I like it way better than George.
@@TheGuardDuck I'd love for Doug to do an NC review on George of the Jungle! I think he's only covered it on Disneycember.
The one joke that made me laugh is when DD turned bad and he goes I am evil because I wear black, and snidely is wearing dark navy blue.
The ad was a solid 9/10 for this channel
I liked the pay-off.
My favorite is still the "how do you do fellow kids"
I'm surprised it took you this long to review Dudley Do-Right. Happy you finally got to do it :)
Dudley Do-Right is the nickname my parents gave me, they got me this movie for Christmas.
Also a Dudley t-shirt. 🤣
It also had John Candy in it.
yeah that was the first thing I thought of, I wonder if Doug knows that movie exists.
@@jadedheartsz I'm more curious on how many people actually know it exists
oh man I think I remember seeing this when I was really young. it's a movie whose scenes would randomly pop into my head, but until today I could not for the life of me remember what it was called.
I'm glad that after this movie, Brendan Fraser was picked to star in THE MUMMY.
Oh crap, its the opposite:
THE MUMMY came out May 2, 1999
DUDLEY DO RIGHT, August 27, 1999.
2:05
The Great Mouse Detective, Dumbo, Oliver And Company, and A Goofy Movie were also under the traditional 80 minute runtime!
🧐
I’m a sucker for these live action adaptations of old cartoons, I was obsessed with this and the yogi bear movie growing up
i saw this in theatres as a kid, i liked it
I love how they didn't even try to set up a consistent time period for the film, it just takes place in the year "fuck it".
Alfred Molina is the MVP of this movie as the biggest ham.
You should’ve reviewed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to celebrate the release of Across the Spider-Verse
The only thing I knew about _Dudley Do-Right_ was the _Rip-Roarin’ Falls_ ride at _Universal Studios._
That’s my favorite ride
Man, I remember having the VHS for this movie when I was five. My mom and I would watch it together. Sure, it's not the greatest movie ever, but I can't help but smile every time I think about it.
I always had a vivid memory of this movie of my childhood when I was 6 or so. I even play this movie and gorge of the jungle back to back on some nights. You reviewing THIS movie of all things was surprising to say the least and was a blast of memories and nostalgia
my junior high teacher showed us this film.
This was one of my favourite movies growing up and I still think back on it fondly.
This movie is still fun to watch. Thanks for the review Doug! 🙂
Dudley Do Right was supposed to be a parody movie, which would’ve been a funny satire of the cartoon, but instead they tried so hard to be George of the Jungle, which that movie was just a fluke it was even successful because Disney was making Tarzan at that time!
Brendan in any role is amazing I love him very much
0:39. That would be his performance in Doom Patrol.
As the biggest Dinosaur fanatic, I approve this documentary.
Prehistoric Planet and Walking with Dinosaurs have competition now.
I've never even heard of this movie, ngl, but any reviews of the NC are always worth the watch.
Probably my favorite line and that whole movie is when snidley is complaining about them throwing rocks at them and saying it's unfair
yes! 100%
then they have to dodge a boulder
Brendan Fraser: an Oscar winner.
What a world we live in
The moment when doug starts using
CG in his breaks.
Damn...didn't expect a bit of my childhood to come punching me right in the face without warning
i randomly remembered you existed the other day, been over a decade so i figured i'd check out your old videos, and it turns out your still making new ones after all this time, looks like i have alot of catching up to do.
You know its a great day when channel awesome updates!😊😊😊❤❤❤
Maybe it’s a bit of a Mandela effect, but I could’ve sworn Snidely Whiplash was played by Nathan Lane in this.
I have memories of watched it on my parent car with the dvd player attached to it , I love it despite what other people think
It's about time Doug covered this!
Same. I love Dougs content
@@chasehedges6775he’s hilarious
The ad about dinosaurs is the first time I haven't skipped through an ad. Bravo. Bravo!
I actually unabashedly love this movie!
It's weird. I literally JUST rewatched this movie for the first time in years. I can agree it's not perfect, but it's a fun movie and a childhood classic!

@@jjbgoodoflungbarrow I think NOT!
As a kid on the DVD covers I always thought this movie was a knock off of that Jim Carrey movie where he also plays a Canadian police officer...Sorry Brendan Fraser😂
