God Save the King was written in the 1700s, for King George IV. It was changed to God Save the Queen for Victoria and Elizabeth but it's mostly been God Save the King.

The original first line was 'God save our Greatest King George'. It was later changed to our 'Gracious King' with William IV as the words did not then fit to the music. And to 'Gracious Queen' with Victoria.

Two other changes I can think of:
    1) barristers will change from Queens Council to Kings Council.
    2) the rules for soldiers in the army will change from The Queens Regulations to The Kings Regulations.

The Queen was so highly regarded, that many Countries couldn't consider ditching the Monarchy during her life.
I hope, that in the future, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia in particular can come together and understand why it is important we come closer together - and stick together - based on our shared Freedom & Common Law.

Their links with the Commonwealth , which is a worldwide trade and cultural grouping, will probably say the same.
The countries with the Queen as there Head of State may decide to become republics. This has being talked about for ages but was not discussed while the Queen was alive. This is a separate thing from Commonwealth membership.
King Charles was voted in unanimously as Head of the Commonwealth.a couple of years ago.so will continue in that position.

As an American I’ve become to admire the non political head of state. I am retina the UK and many other realms have forgone some serious social and political strife because they have a commonality that helps them identify with each other. In the US we have nothing that brings us together, the President used to be able to do that and saw their roll as unifier, that ended I would say with Regan, who still worked well with democrats but himself remaining very partisan once in office. Now our governments have become nothing but fighting and bickering claims of red places and blue places even though every state is about split down the middle. It’s ramped up hate resentment and racism here and doesn’t seek likely to end. So before you are fired up for a republic remember elected politicians only care about reelection not the greater good of long term impact of their policies A monarch and the House of Lords interjects a non political view, one that should consider the overall impact of a law. We don’t have that at all and where your monarch is head of state with no power our President is head of state who is solely responsible without any intervention all of the duties your prime minister is responsible for except what they do when in the House of Commons. But our President runs the Governmnent and appoints all of our cabinet secretaries (your ministers). Our congress passes laws the president signs but unlike your monarch who grants Royal assent our president can veto bills denying them
To become laws and congress can only pass a law without the president with 2/3 vote in both chambers, given our political divisions that’s really not likely to ever happen. So this great American republic you want to emulate may change their “monarch” President every 4 years (or elects) but when in office that single individual welds a power much greater than your prime minister or monarch.

If they are smart they retain the monarchy.
If they are dumb they abolish it and end up crying in 20-30-50 years when they realize they fucked up.
We need anchors in time, for me it's my Royal family of Norway, for many others it was Queen Elizabeth II.
      I hope they keep it.

When I was a kid we were used to seeing previous monarchs on coins before decimalisation in 1971. Most old coins were swept away when they were replaced by new decimal coins. The old shilling and two shillings coins lingered on for a while in use as 5p and 10p coins. When the decimal coins were reduced in size in 1992, all the old coins were taken out of circulation. I remember seeing Queen Victoria coins when I was kid, and she died in 1901. Then there was the whole thing of pre-1947 coins containing actual silver.

its funny how the royal warrant simultaneously gives companies an ego boost as the monarch is currently using their products but also pressures them as they have to keep quality up as they could be dropped if they fail to provide suitable quality to their products. a normal citizen being dissatisfied is ok, they can just change brands, no big deal. But loosing the coat of arms is like loosing endorsement from a celeb and can crush the company if the general public hear about it.

In regards to the national anthem I think it's only been a national anthem since the queen's reign however the song has been in popular use before this and did exist as early as the Jacobite rebellions, I think it might have actually been originally sung in support of King James but I could be wrong about that. It changed from King to Queen depending on the monarch of the day.

"God save the King/Queen" has been the national anthem for a lot longer than the late Queen's reign: I don't know where you got the idea that its use only dated back 70 years.
It is, however, and has always been a de facto national anthem: no law was ever passed to make it "official" unlike the US anthem which was officially adopted as their anthem in 1931.

The National Anthem has not so much changed as simply reverted to what it was when I was very small. I am baffled why Tyler should think it should still refer to the Queen. The only changes are from Queen to King and from her to his. Could not be more minimal.

The UK’s anthem changed depending on the Queen-King.
It was adopted as the national anthem in September 1745 during the reign of King George II.
For the last 70 years it was like this:
    God save our gracious *Queen*
    Long live our noble *Queen*
    God save the *Queen*
    Send *her* victorious
    Happy and glorious
    Long to reign over us
    God save the *Queen*
    Oh Lord our God arise
    Scatter *her* enemies
    And make them fall!
    Confound their politics
    Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
    God save us all!
    Thy choicest gifts in store
On *her* be pleased to pour
    Long may *she* reign.
    May *she* defend our laws
    And ever give cause
To sing with heart and voice
    God save the *Queen* !
Now, all the “Queen” and “her” have to change to match the male monarch!
Also, America has a “national” anthem.
Why??? America is a country not a nation…

    • @PolarBear4

      Also the verse:

May she (he) defend our laws
      and ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
      God save the Queen (King)
I remember learning that one as a Brownie and Guide and it's often used at Remembrance Day events near me along with the first verse.

A lot of countries use plastic notes, the UK only started using them in the last few years. Australia invented them, they've been used in Oz since the 80s. watch "Secrets of the Australian Dollar" to learn more.
Also this guy is wrong assuming Charles face is going on the Australian $5 bill. The current discussion in Australia does not support that. Its very likely either the queens face will stay just as a notable person in our history, or she will be replaced by an actual important Australian, to match al the other banknotes. Charles will only be on the coins.

After Queen Victoria died, the national anthem changed back to "God Save the King", for King Edward VII and remained "King" through subsequent kings George V and George VI until Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, when it once again changed to "God Save the Queen". Now the swing has gone back to "King" again. It's something that just happens here.

The reverse side of banknotes have protraits of famous citizens and are changed every few years. The list of these 'famous Britons' (and the reason for their heroism in various fields) would certainly make for an interesting vid! They include some you know (e.g. Winston Churchill) and some you may not (e.g. Alan Turing). By tradition each new monarch gets a reverse profile so Charles will face to the right. Finally there is an important distinction between an insignia, a cipher, a monogram and a coat of arms (royals often have them all! ) and a 'brand' or 'logo' is something else, entirely. I'll let you Google that one! LOL

You should also look into the tune that you play at your graduation ceremonies that is also British and ironically the most patriotic song ever written for our country and don't forget your own national anthem is based on a baudy British drinking song!
P.S. I was walking past the post box that I've lived near to for 6 years and I've only just noticed that it has GR VI on it not ER II, which means its been there for over 70 years!

I am not a lawyer, but as a Briton I was struck by how immediately the legal system changed. The court system operates in the name of the monarch, so this is now conducted in the name of the King. Criminal cases would previously have been styled as "Regina v. John Doe" (as American trials might, I think, be "State of Idaho v. John Doe"). I believe these will now be "Rex v. John Doe". Fortunately, these are generally shorted to "R. v. John Doe", which does not change. Senior Barristers (basically, trial lawyers) might previously have been awarded the status of "Queen's Counsel". These are now "King's Counsel". Presumably prisons which were previous "HM Prison Manchester" retain that form, but the "H" now indicates 'His" (as with 'HMS"). In another area, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs ("HMRC" - the UK equivalent of the IRS in the US) will be "His Majesty's ..." . There are a lot of places where "Her" and "His starting with the same letter makes things much easier!

Notes from five pounds, one pound, for half a pound (Ten Shillings), Crowns, half-crowns, florins ('two-bob bits'), shillings ('bob'), sixpences (a 'tanner'), threepenny 'bits' (sometimes twelve-sided brass coins, sometimes small round 'silver' threepenny bits), pennies, halfpennies, and a rare quarter-penny I no longer remember the name of.
Pennies could be found with Queen Victoria's face on, others might have King George the fifth, or King George the Sixth, can't remember if I ever saw an Edward the Eighth coin. This was ten or more years after Queen Elizabeth the second was crowned.

There has been talk all through the common wealth for decades on whether or not to ditch the monarchy and become a full republic in name. On the whole every common wealth realm or overseas territory is functionally a democratic (republic) country already with the monarchy only holding a symbolic position. Removing the monarchy will neither gain or loose these countries anything tangible. Even in the UK there is a small republic movement that want to remove the monarchy out of principle. Most people though are ambivalent to it and given the option would probably choose to maintain the status quo as it doesn't harm them in anyway. Plus the English like a good bit of royal pageantry which would be lost if we did go full republic.

It will be interesting to see how Commonwealth nations react over the coming months and years and how many (if any) decide to become republics. As far as the UK is concerned, there may be more support for devolution, particularly in Scotland, but otherwise the change in monarch is unlikely to have much effect.
One minor point that was omitted in the video - there is a standard Queen's crown which is a different shape to the standard King's crown which will soon be seen above the CiiiR insignia - this will first be seen on military and police badges. The first change we will notice in our daily domestic lives will be new stamps, but as for coins and banknotes they are likely to start appearing after the coronation in 2023. (Historical note: stamps bearing the image of King Edward VIII were in use in 1935-1936 but although coin designs were approved and some proof coins struck he abdicated before being crowned so no coins were put into circulation).
What do we in the UK use the Royal Mail for? These days mainly for greetings cards, official correspondence, and purchases from online suppliers who don't use couriers (and to a lesser extent for personal correspondence, newsletters, sales catalogues and miscellaneous other items). Unless we are in a rush we don't go to the passport office - passports are delivered in the post.

The fact that King/Queen is/was the monarch of so many countries, and further more, the monarch is the actual legal head of most these countries military’s (their oath is to the King/Queen, not to the country or government), actually still makes the this specific Monarch, the most powerful person on the planet.
Well potentially at least, their are checks and balances and the monarch has self imposed limits, as many documentaries have mentioned (some are more accurate than other, especially the one made by British people).
This is why most Commonwealth countrymen from around the globe, roll our eyes at the delusion the US President has (some far more than others), about being the most powerful person on the planet/free world.
The US President can’t even decide to declare war on anyone, as that’s an act of congress. Whilst the British monarch can, but usually does so at the request of her government. But they could declare war on anyone, on a whim.
BUT, to do so would then turn the public and government against them, and the monarchy would soon be abolished.
It’s a strange situation where the monarch still has a lot of potential power, but can’t use it, as their hands are tied by convention and the concept of parliamentary democracy, where the government makes the rules and not royal decree except in very specific and ritualistic situations, like we are currently in right now.
Like the situation where town cryers and governors (both state and federal) are still the legal way to declare in the reign of the new king or Queen.
In Australia, each state Governor (King’s state representative) as well as the Governor General of Australia (King’s federal representative), each had to repeat the declaration out in public, for the transition of power to become legal.
But I digress, The King is now the British Field Marshal and head of most of the commonwealths various armed forces (including the British, obviously), and they have all sworn their loyalty to the crown. So in a military sense. Our monarch is indeed the most powerful person on the planet.

So for a country like Canada who has existed since 1867, queen Elizabeth was the ruler for almost half of Canada's total existence. Now that they are a sovereign nation they'll have the opportunity to think whether they were loyal to the crown that's been there for 150 years or loyal to the woman that was there for 70
So the issue is, are countries happy with tradition or were they happy with the woman Queen Elizabeth

Please notice that the image of the Crown used has changed. What we instinctively know is a portrayal of the crown in the style of St Edward's Crown with depressed arches. However, as shown from the royal cypher, the image of the crown has reverted back to the standardisation made by King-Emperor Edward VII called the Tudor Crown with normal arches. So the UK coat if arms will change to show the Tudor crown and that should be reflected on things like passports and royal warrants. Also other representations of the Crown in the other realms, like in the Canadian coat of arms, will also reflect this change. The idea that the heraldic St Edwards Crown is a Queen's Crown is ludicrous, just as it is too assume that the Tudor crown is a King's Crown. The representation of the Crown was entirely at the mercy of the artist drawing it, since there was no standards for it before Edward VII. Furthermore, many people claim that most monarchs preceeding Queen Victoria had representations of St Edwards Crown in heraldry is again ludicrous since the Imperial State Crowns of George II, George III and a couple others were the crowns being depected in heraldic drawings. Someone please politely correct me if I am wrong.

Not all the Commonwealth has the monarch as head of state. As they go their own way in the world a lot of countries have become republics. There are others who have had referendums on the subject and voted to remain, however there are republican minded politicians such as the new leader of Australia who will one day have another referendum. They can still however remain in the Commonwealth and because of their common language and governmental similarities It works well for international relations and trade. With a potential market of over 2 billion people it makes sense.

For our Church service on Sunday, our Organist had printed out the new National Anthem, which we sang at the end of the service. But we still had to concentrate hard!
Government Departments have Seals to make valid certain legal documents; the most important is the Great Seal. Part of the Accession Council was declaring the existing seals - in the name of Elizabeth II - were still temporarily valid. But when the new Seals come out, Charles III will have to destroy the old Seals publicly, and he is given a hammer to do so...

The reason we will not keep stamps with the queen on is because new stamps are coming out with a special bar code on now so the new stamps will have the king on them. However there will be special seasonal stamps for things like Christmas that may still be in use.

What makes British stamps different to any other in the world. They are the only ones that do not have the country on the stamps. Primarily because in 1840 the first stamp based postal service started in the UK with the wrold first stamp being the penny black.

Of course, the lyrics of the National Anthem have most often through history been 'God Save the King'. They were changed up to 'Queen' when Queen Elizabeth came to the throne. But after 70 years the changes are going to take a bit of getting used to.

4:20 At this point he should also mention that Scottish bank notes also have the monarch's face on them. A reminder that there hasn't been a "queen of England" since 1707, and that the monarchs To Do List has always had "Hold Realms Together" very high on itself.

The 'symbol' on the mailbox: The crown, currently a queen's crown, would be changed to a king's crown (arches curve down for queen, up for king). and the EllR will be change to ClllR. (Elizabeth ll Regina, to Charles lll Rex)

Not all post-boxes have the Queens coat of arms on them, older ones have her fathers' and grandfathers' crests'. Infact a few still bear Queen Victorias' crest. British passports always used to be dark blue, they were changed to burgundy when we joined the EU and changed back when we left. Incidentally, Britain is the only country that does not have the name of the country on its stamps, as Britain invented the stamp, as well as the rest of the postal service.

Just a couple of things that you might find of interest. There are still post boxes in use that are embossed with VR (for Queen Victoria) Also during the Queens reign on coins she faces to the right and on stamps she faces to the left. If they follow tradition this will be reversed for King Charles (ie on coins he will face left and on stamps right)

The reverse of our notes have significant British people throughout history on them.
The first King Charles 50 pence pieces will be in circulation by the end of this year.2022.
The majority of my stamp purchases will be at Christmas, when I send Christmas cards to family all over the UK.
Our older Post Boxes have Queen Victoria and King George's monogram on them.
The National anthem was written in 1745 for a KING. It changes each time depending on the sex of the monarch at the time.

the mainboxes are unlikely to be replaced. as the guy in the video said, only 60% of current postboxes have the queens symbol on them. and the 40% that have past monachs seals on them, are still in use. since very few new areas needing postboxes are popping up, as need to post small letters goes down, it's unlikely we'll see it pop up in many places beyond maybe switching a few out for symbolic purposes. But ik round where i live i see quite a few George VI post boxes around. it's not that uncommon if you're in an area of the country developed before the 50's.. which is most of it.. the post boxes are really built to last.

In Australia, many emergency services (Police, Ambulance, Firefighters) have the Queen's crown on the uniform emblem. If King Charles III has a different crown then all these uniforms will require changing.

Postboxes are made from solid cast iron, they are extremely heavy and go into the ground by a good 3-4 foot where they are then fixed. The crown and markings are normally on the door which the postman opens to extract the letters etc, therefore a new iron cast door would be replaced and not the whole box.

Always good to hear (and see) your videos, from the perspective of someone who lives in a different country and thus things that are normal to us are not quite understood and are maybe strange to folk from "outside". In centuries past news travelled but slowly, only quickened with the advent of newspapers, certainly prior to that the Town Crier would proclaim in his booming voice "The Queen is dead, God Save the King" and the churches would be instrumental in spreading the news to their parishioners.

lol. It originally started it's life as 'God Save the KING'. I think it was introduced under King George II. It was first changed to 'God Save the Queen' when Victoria came the throne in 1937 at the age of 18. Then back again when her son came to the throne as King Edward VII. It was still 'God save the King' when I started School 😉. However it changed again in 1952. Pretty obvious I would have thought. 🤣

Some of the commonwealth countries have the queen specifically referred to in their constitution so will need to be changed. However in some places a change to the constitution requires approval from the population by means of a referendum, so they will have to have a vote to decide if they keep the monarch as head of state.

Coins will carry on for decades, in the 60's I found a 1901 Queen Victoria Half Crown (2 Shillings and six Pence, 12/6 d, now12.5p ) no longer legal tender but as it has about £12 worth of silver content.
