    Who cares if people like clean beauty. It’s not bull shit. It’s not hurting anyone. I agree that a lot of chemical ingredients are safe but what’s the problem with going with more natural stuff and leaving most of the chemicals out. We could all do with less chemicals in our lives.

    • @JamesWelsh
      @JamesWelsh  11 месяцев назад +1580

      But that’s the issue. Even the use of the word ‘chemical’ as if it’s a bad thing. Everything is a chemical. Clean beauty, with all due respect, is mostly bullshit. It relies on outdated and incorrect information that’s not based in science and does more harm than good by making people believe cosmetics they have easy and affordable access to are ‘dirty’ or filled with ‘toxic chemicals’ when in reality, natural ingreidnats are more likely to irritate your skin. Clean beauty pushes outdated and non-evidence backed claims like, chemicals enter our blood stream, chemical sunscreens are bad, parabens cause cancer. When in reality none of this is accurate. But because the media and these brands use these incorrect ideas to sell their products through fear, many people out there believe this is science fact. When it’s not. So I will have to disagree and say it’s hurting people and it is in fact a load of bull shit

      Water is a chemical. It's frankly a dangerous trend to demonise more complex scientific formulas while hyping up all things natural. Just because an ingredient exists in nature does not equal safe or better. But it does play into anti science propaganda we're witnessing nowadays. Clean beauty means nothing but adds negative connotations to the "chemical" products.

      It's the issue when it is a claim made in an unregulated field with no proven benefits for the health, environment or Idk fair trade, to boost up the sales. False marketing is illegal and this is a grey area that needs regulation. Otherwise is fine. Produce your own organic plant and eat it or apply anywhere you want if it's your thing.

    The Sol de Janeiro thing was crazy. I saw it start on the the Sephora Subreddit, and people generally knew it was a joke. It took me five minutes of research to find the review and see that they had made an almost word for word identical review on another random item on Sephora in March 2023. They were obviously just trolling, maybe even trying to get viral by repeating the same outlandish review half a year later. Someone on the Ulta Subreddit said they threw out all their Sol de Janeiro items and were told they wasted all their products for no reason because the spider review was a joke.

    When I used a certain fake tan I would get stung by a wasp or a bee, happened like 5 times I thought maybe it’s the tan until I had a think about it maybe it’s because I wear tan in the summer, I’m more likely to be showing more skin and I’m outside more so it’s more likely to encounter a bee, though I wonder if it’s freshly applied moisture maybe the spiders just gets stuck and bites because it can’t get away 🙈 I got a huge wasp stuck in my arm I guess my freshly applied tan was sticky!

      random fact about fragrance and bees: isoamyl acetate is the compound bees use to provoke each other to sting in presence of a threat. It’s also a primary part of banana scented products (can be used in other fruit scents as well)! this can mean two things: one, bees have a higher chance of getting mad at you if you are using a banana scented or based product and two, an angry beehive will sometimes smell like bananas. 😛

    Even in the US Retinols/ Vitamin A are regulated but in different categories based on the percentages, the higher the percentage the more likely you need to get a prescription from your doctor. Alpha Arbutin isn't regulated the precursor to hydroquinone which is. It interesting that they are regulating Kojic acid. As for Green Washing it started in Cleaning products and then it started to move into beauty and Skin care here sectors. I guess you could say hybrid and electric car along with MPG cars were marketed as "Greener" options but it's more about regulation and incentives for those types cars here in the US.

    I understand why the EU is limiting retinal for the concerns over overuse, but I don’t think they should legislate just because someone might be over using something. It’s being very overly cautious. And I am far too paranoid to trust the certification for what is considered green. It’s probably just my trust issues talking though. I guess we’ll see how well it works when it’s fully implemented.

    • @hannajung7512
      @hannajung7512 11 месяцев назад +26

      the thing is: the regulation serves to protect people that do not know better. basically: cosmetics you can get over the counter should be useable by everybody without them having to know exactly how and how often to use it.
      You can get higher percentages either by buying cosmetic ingredients to make your own cosmetics, or by getting a prescription by a dermatologist, which may not be covered by the health care system, but you still can get it this way. Since it is a so callled "privately paid" prescription you can get it even via those tele prescription services. So it mostly gets down to anybody wanting a higher percentage needing to show they talked to somebody who told them how to properly use it for their skin.

    • @hannajung7512
      @hannajung7512 11 месяцев назад +20

      @@pantherhealingthe thing is: the EU has another approach to these things. basically you have to demonstrate your product/ingredient is safe to be allowed to sell it. Not the EU having to show it is not safe.

    I disagree. Retinol IS effectively being banned because most people need to use a percentage over 0.3 to get sufficient results. Hi James! With retinol being a derivative of vitamin A, can it be said that vitamin A could be added to your daily vitamin intake in order to improve skin from the inside out?
    Thanks 😊

    James! Marina Abramovíc has come out with a skincare line which has really rocked the art world. I appreciate it from a conceptual perspective, let the woman make her coins, but I'd love it if you reviewed it or dug a bit deeper into the products and their claims though be warned! It does feel like a ✨clean✨ skincare type of vibe.

    What's crazy about the spider thing is I *have* been mimicked by a recluse before in my house lol. For whatever reason it didnt want me past it, so if I moved right, it would move to my right to "block" me and did this for minutes with me freaking out trying to figure out what to do...
    This was years ago, so very unrelated to anything skincare, but they can behave that way and follow you around. Its really freakin odd LOL.

    They also banned titanium dioxide last year (not frot the sunscreens but it was common conservation ingredient in many pills)

    Wolf spiders are absolutely a menace if you live in an area like I do where they are native. Yes, they will chase you around the room and they are huge. Had this happen in my home years ago. But it’s absolutely absurd to think they are attracted in any way to skin cream or beauty product. Typically, they go into your home to seek shelter because their previous home (shrub, landscaping) was disturbed in some way.

      Because she has the nerve to try to convince women with less money than her to ditch their makeup and buy her expensive skin products so they too can be “beautiful and free.” She knows we will never look as good as she does without makeup, but she knows some people don’t know that. That’s what celebrities like her and the Kardashians do- they act a part to sell you things. Her beauty comes from her money, but she’s trying to tell us it comes from her skincare… She’s had more work done than most people in Hollywood for f***s sake.

    Excerpt from coslaw “Furthermore, the SCCS identified maximum safe limits for the use of Vitamin A in cosmetic products. Consequently, the European Commission transposed them into the new draft regulation. The restrictions concern the following forms of Vitamin A: Retinol, Retinyl Acetate, and Retinyl Palmitate.”
    So retinaldehyde should be fine.

    When Supes was briefly exposed to Kryptonite, before it fell away from him into the nuclear waste pit he was standing beside, a tiny wolf spider, irradiated by both the nuclear waste and the Kryptonite, chose that moment to chomp on his hand. (This is the pre-Crisis-On-Infinite-Earths Superman, by the way, with the dizzying array of incidental powers, like Super-Ventriloqism.) The momentary vulnerability allowing the spider to break the skin and pull a drop of Kryptonian blood. The already mutagenically changed spider began to absorb the solar supercharged blood cells, and but held onto the Man of Steel as he began to fly away (Clark was unaffected by the spider bite, actually healing before he even left the ground).
    The spider’s mutation rapidly adapted to the Kryptonian physiology. It’s super-spider brain gained approximately human-level intelligence, as Superman returned to the Justice League satellite. The spider observed the comings and goings of the various heroes, and eventually decided to try its hand (leg?) at using its powers to be a hero (it had gained numerous other powers: invulnerability, flight, super-strength, the whole host of vision powers, as well as Super-Webbing). It escaped the satellite by hitching a ride with the Flash using a teleporter to beam down to Central City.
    After a few months of being a moderately effective hero, but without any recognition because he was still a tiny wolf spider and people failed to notice who their mysterious benefactor was, SuperSpider decided to retire from active hero life, making his way back to the JLA satellite to live out his days and guarding his new home from occasional super-villain attacks. (It was after singlehandedly repelling one of these and rescuing several JLA members that he finally came to the League’s attention. The Martian Manhunter made telepathic contact, and he became an honorary member of both the JLA and the Legion of Super Pets.)

    i bought my daughter glitterglue pens because she liked the look of them for crafts. she opened one when we got home and a bit later, a ladybug flew over and started eating the glue. by that time, i grabbed the glue and put a bit on paper to see what would happen. it finished it's meal and flew over to me to have seconds.
    so, this glitterglue was 'like crack' for this ladybug lol
    my husband and i were going to make dinner, and we'd just rinsed off a knife and put it on the counter. it had a little bubble of water on it and looked kinda cool. a spider came out from under the drying rack and ran straight for the bubble of water. it was interesting watching this little spider drink. when it was done, it went back under the drying rack.
