It must be nice to be able to have enough money to travel there to volunteer and not have to worry about paying your bills.

Be free With me , to travel, take time off (I’d imagine you need a somewhat significant amount of time off for volunteering to make a worthwhile impact)..... it all takes money and time that some of us need to pay boring old bills like electricity, food, heat, etc. with. Don’t be so naive. Many of wish we had the money to be able to volunteer.

Is volunteering counterproductive towards saving orangutans? Meaning, wouldn't it better to take the $1,500 in travel costs that volunteers spend to get from NY or London to remote to Sumatra and instead use that money to pay locals to do the jobs that the volunteers are seen doing in this video? Isn't it the locals who, desperate for income, sell baby orangutans in the pet trade or go to work on palm oil plantations.

Hi there Michael, you raise some interesting points.
Volunteer participation is valuable on many different levels:
      - The money raised for the project, via volunteer
participation, goes a long way towards the running of the sanctuary. Whether it’s
construction/maintenance of the sanctuary, the cost of food for the animals, or
even medical care (or, indeed, the release of these animals back into the wild
once they’ve been rehabilitated), it would be tremendously difficult for the
locals in these areas to raise funds by themselves. By volunteers paying to
take part in a project, they’re helping to cover the costs of each of these
things. (Just to be clear, there are locals hired by the sanctuary, allowing
them to make a difference to the animals, as well as providing them with a wage
and sustainability of their own - our volunteers are more like pseudo-staff,
offering support to the official staff members at the sanctuary.)
      - With regards to how the volunteers help locals, the
volunteers take part in community projects (such as recycling initiatives,
economic and conservation education, etc); there is also the opportunity for
volunteers to work with local school children, educating them about the
importance of conservation and the impact of these things on their own home
environments/way of life. We offer a number of different orangutan volunteer
projects which tackle different aspects of community work; you can read more
about each project by clicking here: www.thegreatprojects.com/volunteer-with-orangutans
      - Additionally, it is unfortunately the case that many
people simply do not care about conservation efforts unless they can see these
things for themselves. That said, by volunteers taking part (and becoming truly
engaged with conservation efforts), they are more likely to be empathetic to
the cause, going on to spread further awareness about the plight of the
orangutans. On top of that, there are many people who are compelled to do more
than just donate. For many people, simply parting with their money is not
enough: they want to be on the ground, at the sanctuaries, contributing to the
construction of these sites and offering support wherever available.
I do hope that I have been able to clear up your concerns,
shedding a little light on how volunteers do genuinely make a difference to the
lives of the animals and locals alike. If you have any further questions,
please feel free to reach out to us at info@thegreatprojects and we’d be more
than happy to discuss this with you further.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think you missed my point. l don't doubt that volunteers do good work at the center. I also don't doubt that the fees for them to participate in your volunteer program are a badly needed source of income for your organization.
Rather, my point was that MORE GOOD would result if your volunteers would forgo their own travel experience and instead donate the cost of their travel as well as the cost of your volunteer program's operating costs to hire local people for the benefits stated above. If saving orangutans is truly the goal, then Western volunteers, no matter how well intentioned, need to find other vacation ideas.
I also don't buy the argument that "people simply do not care about conservation efforts unless they can see these things for themselves." You mean to tell me that someone who's willing to spend 24 hours (at the very least) traveling to remote Sumatra and spend at least $3,000 to do so has not researched the conservation purpose of your program?
I suspect that by offering this paid volunteer program you are enabling a quid pro quo that doesn't ultimately help orangutans. Now the revenue might be too good for your organization to turn down, but could you at least explain on the volunteer program page of your website the number of locals who could be hired with same money used to pay for one volunteer

      Hi Michael,
That’s no problem. We’re always happy to answer questions, and we also feel that these types of conversations are rather valuable.
In an ideal world, perhaps more people would forgo their travel experience to help the cause/local people. However, it is unfortunately the case that there are many, many people who get in touch with the desire to ‘hold an orangutan baby’ etc; at which point, it is our duty to dispel that misconception. In turn, we are educating these individuals on the plight of the orangutan (and, indeed, informing them of the help and education needed by locals, too.) It is typically at this point where the individual makes their choice: whether they still want to help (be that by making a donation to an organisation, or going out to Borneo to participate at the sanctuary), or if they would prefer to pursue another vacation idea. As mentioned in my previous response, however, there are many people who feel as if they are making the biggest difference by donating (via the cost of their volunteer experience) AND lending a hand at the project site, too.
A large part of what we do here at The Great Projects is spreading awareness about the difficulties faced by endangered animals, and the impact we as humans have on the planet/the animals which share the earth with us. As valuable as our volunteers are, we also focus on immediate calls-to-action, highlighting ways in which people can make a difference without having to fly around the world. We understand that not everybody can - or will even want to - make the journey over to Borneo to assist at the sanctuaries, but if we are able to emphasise the plight of the animals (through our website, videos, or blogs, for example), then perhaps people will be compelled to help in any way they see fit. This may be through donations, working at sanctuaries, making changes to their own lifestyle and so forth. (In light of donations, our volunteers raised £240,000 last year alone, which goes towards the conservation of animals, project development, staff salaries and so forth.) This is something that we highlight on our ‘about us’ page of the website; however, I can absolutely understand if you feel that there should be more information regarding how we help locals, as well as animals. In light of the point you have made, I will ensure that a comprehensive blog of this sort will be written up, and added to our ‘about us’ page. In addition to this, the blog will be made available on each project page, meaning that the information will be clearly and readily available for all to see.
As a final point, our close relationship with BOSF is made clear on our website. If you are an individual that prefers to donate all funds, rather than visit the sanctuary, this is absolutely possible. We encourage everybody to make a difference in any way that they see fit, but for those who wish to donate, they can do so by clicking here: donation.orangutan.or.id/

rj doggman , BOTH can be be done. Get out YOUR wallet and start donating to your favorite children’s charities. There will be others who will do both. I doubt you contribute any money to ANY charitable cause. You just loathe apes ( and likely other animals) as noted by your many foul, abusive, violent comments about your fantasies wanting to sadistically kill these these creatures. I wouldn’t doubt you’re a friggin serial killer. Gth rj doggman 🖕

@rj doggman You're writing this while sitting in front of your computer at home. What have you done for the 'poor children' then? There are many projects like this for children already. Go support them or don't say anything! And why should we not support animals? I wish humans weren't speciesists.

It should have been mentioned that volunteers do NOT HOLD OR INTERACT WITH THE ANIMALS DIRECTLY! It puts them and the humans at risk for disease. Very irresponsible of Great Projects to mislead like this when it's on your volunteer pages! 😖😲😱

Hi there Carla and thank you for your comment. As you have rightly pointed out, volunteers are not able to have physical contact with the animals. This is something that is made clear on our website; however, we have now amended the caption of this video to make that point a little clearer.

The Great Projects I'm so glad to hear this, and frankly, a little surprised. But in a good way.
It's just that usually, if a company can make money by pushing the _idea_ that women already in love with the squishy dream of actually holding and taking care of orangutan babies (personally, I'd rather be naked, tied to a bee's nest and set on fire) think they will get to do just that, then they'll play on that idea and market it for all it's worth, damn the truth. I think it shows a _lot_ of integrity to clarify this, knowing it may be at the expense of thousands of dollars of potential customers.
I am truly impressed. *Truly.* Good on you! This alone would make me want to do bidness with you if I were in a financial position to do so. 💖🐹🐯🐆🐫🐒🐘
