I thought the crank snout had to be drilled to meet the first main bearing oil passage in order to lube the transmission? At least, that's what I recall from reading my '62 CC SkiBoat engine book...

Yes. The crank must be drilled if it is a manual drive transmission. That version uses engine oil for transmission lube
