Watched this series just based on an interest in the various and numerous non-auto applications of the Chevy small block over the years. Really appreciate your attention to the details! Looks like you did a great job and I have no doubt these engines will serve you well for many years!
Really nice work and great job documenting it! Completely agree with your changeover to hi pressure rubber lines for the remote oil filter. I'm a little surprised they originally used copper, as that's known to crack with vibration and is no longer used anywhere for automotive applications that I can think of. How are those chrome valve covers holding up in a marine environment? I haven't seen any of those yet that don't start rusting within a year on a car.
Hello Don, your video series about this motor is golden! Thx for all the detailed insights! I have a question about the original oilfilter fixture that you show in your video. Do you still have that and would you be selling it to me by any chance? I would like to change my current setup to a remote filter unit, as currently it is a real mess to change oil when removing the housing for the filter from under the engine block. Its a hard to reach place and a real mess as the remaining oil leaks everywhere. (I am from Germany so it is a bit tough for me to explain in better terms) Thank you for a quick reply.
I will check to see if I saved the original. Please send me an email at rivachriscraft@gmail.com
Love the series. It looks like you have new inserts in the motor mounts. Would you tell me please where you obtained them?
Contact Chris-Craft-Parts.com and use my name. Robert is great
Hi Don. Love your videos. I have the same setup as yours in a 1951 CC RR. 400ci SBC but uses the same front housing and water pump. Picked this as a barn find and rebuilding much of it. Couple of questions: is there any means of adjusting the drive belts tension? Is it possible to replace the belts without removing the entire flywheel housing?
The top of the pump drive housing is a fixed bolt hole. The bottom should have an opening for the bolt to slide back and forth for adjustment of the belts. Yes, you can change the belts without taking the flywheel off. Just take off the alternator pulley. If you have a generator version you should be able to loosen the belts enough to remove me.
Never saw the name. Make it go! lol Well, Thanks for this much. TY
Work of art
Beautiful work Don. I see you have what appears to be the original Mallory dual point distributors. May I ask where you obtained points, rotors, and caps? I have the same distributer on my 400 SBC in my 1951 CC RR but have been unable to find parts for it.
Hello Don, your video series is nothing short of incredible! Thank you so much for this wonderful source of information! I recently took over my fathers 1965 Chris-Craft Cavalier and am now facing a couple of issues. If your time allows it would be really appreciated if we could get in touch about it. If I’m correct, the comments have to be reviewed by you before publishing. If so I’d send you another one with my contact details upon confirmation. Ok? Again, amazing work with the engines and the video series!!! Cheers, Wolfgang (from Germany)
Glad you found the series helpful. Feel free to contact me via email at rivachriscraft@gmail.com
Can you suggest a good chris craft experience engine shop in PA or OH ? I have a 1965 283 CCorsair that was not winterized properly and now has maifold damage.
Lakeland Auto and Marine in OH. Chris Hamman is the owner
I assume it is an old Allison aircraft engine.
No tacky green n blue underwater lights on that beast ..
Lame. Not driving
At least we know his valve covers don't leak !
How much did you spend on each motor doing the work yourself?
My ears hurt all the way over here :-)
This puts the old saying "no replacement for displacement" to the test haha
Beautiful boat!))))
Detroit WHAT!!!! 😎🎸
Imagine the carbon monoxide being injested by the pilot!
Awesome. But how do you keep that exposed valve gear from collecting salt spray, debris, dirt, and other crud? Looks so vulnerable; but fascinating to watch in action!
Impressive engine for the time period but no valve covers?
🇺🇸💪
Love the sound of that camshaft overlap
I can see this being super cool for about 10 seconds.... Who wants this in their face/ears after that?
Ah - with open rocker arms 😀
As a marine mechanic that's music to my ears.
I imagine this boat is only thing he can hear at this point lol...sounds awesome!!!
Beautiful!
Incredible sound!

Hotrod boats...damn they knew already a century ago what was hotrodding al about.
How does that boat have any room left in it between the engine and the set of balls that guys got to sit right next to it?
I'd like to see a move on the water.
Coolest deaf guy since Beethoven.
Having the driver positioned behind the engine is dangerous.
Ahhhhhh the smell of exhaust early in the morning.
Did you have any issues with clearance between your flywheel side connecting rods and the oil sump line hose?
No clearance issues at all
I found my issue, going from 283 to 305, I had to adjust the angle the hose fitting was coming out of the pump itself, not sure why it wasn’t the right angle but I pointed it like yours is and that fixed it. Thanks for the great videos!
Thats badass old timer ⏳ 🥺👋
I thought the crank snout had to be drilled to meet the first main bearing oil passage in order to lube the transmission? At least, that's what I recall from reading my '62 CC SkiBoat engine book...
Yes. The crank must be drilled if it is a manual drive transmission. That version uses engine oil for transmission lube
Thanks again Don for another great video.
Carb is 600 CFM … great details in the videos Don !
Hello Don, it is exactly your engine that is on the video that I would like to draw in scale 1/6em for my model of Riva Aquarama. Is it possible that you send me different pictures of your engine. top view from left to right, AV and AR view with some dimensional dimensions with all this I must be able to draw it, for the rest I will make a homothety report. I know it can be binding for you. Thank you in advance for everything. If you want me to send you my email address for sending photos, it's as you want
Hello. Happy to send you pictures. My email is rivachriscraft@gmail.com
Great video. Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Don. Thanks for another excellent video. Is your oil filter relocation system original equipment? Or did you buy a new kit? If it’s new, which kit is it. Thanks. Guy
Hello Guy. About the last 3,300 engines were equipped with the remote oil filter unit as shown on these engines. about 8% of the total production. Hope that helps. You can find them out there if you want to add
🇩🇿👍
Don. Can you please give me more information about the alternator? What’s the make and model of the alternator? Where did you get the alternator mounting brackets? Thanks. Guy
Hi Guy. Hope all is well. The alternator I have are original units which are Autolite ALE-5202-A. 40 amp units that do require a voltage regulator which is part number VBV-6201-A. Not sure what you mean re brackets? If you’re talking the top adjustable bracket that is a CC part you would need to find from a supplier like Robert Henkel. Same for the bottom plate. Now you would need to have the correct front housing that has the boss cast into it for that bottom plate. Hope this helps
Hi Don. Thanks for the information. I understand better now. I see the boss you mentioned. My housing doesn’t have that. I had a 1959 283 FWF engine that I parted-out. It’s generator wasn’t water cooled. The generator on my 1961 engine is water cooled. And your engines have alternators. I appreciated your description of that progression.
Hi Don. Excellent video and very helpful for my project. Happy New Year! Guy
Hello, I am a model maker and I make the model of the special Riva Aquarama, at 1/6th scale I have already drawn all my hardware because there are no plans to my knowledge. Now I will try to draw the V8 engines. Also I wanted to know if you had plans, these engines so that I can make them in 3D printing or any other information that could help me move forward in this project. Thank you in advance for your answer. Best regards
Paul, The Riva Aquarama "Special" (1972-1996) only used the Riva Crusader 454 big block engines. There is a guy on Facebook that I follow that has made these in 3D already. They are incredibly details. Look up Patrizio Dessi. These engines (CC 283's) were used in Aquarama from 1963-1966. Hope this helps
