  • Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we take a look at the Event Matches of Super Smash Bros. Melee, and how they apply characters' deeper mechanics to engaging and creative Event Matches to act as a natural teaching tool.

It seems you vilify that Metal Samuses event (forgot the name), but it actually teaches yet another aspect, the fact that metal opponents have a harder time offstage. Highlighted by Brinstar Depths being particularly brutal offstage.
Great video! I never thought of Event Matches like this.

While that's true, and probably why it was included into the list, I feel that isn't a concept that needs teaching as rigorously as it is, since the Metal Box item is uncommon and that is one of the harder Event Matches. Also, it kind of teaches that the best way to beat opponents is to abuse their bad AI, a lesson which is harmful once they start facing human opponents.

Great video. No other smash captured the event matches like melee did and you video perfectly explains why. I didn’t even realize they were teaching you without telling you. Your analysis is spot on. I’m glad I found your page and surprised you don’t have more subs. Keep up the good work.

It's amazing how much more memorable these event matches are compared to later games.

I still maintain that Trouble King 2 blows. "Trick the OP but dopey AI into killing itself" isn't exactly a fun time in my book.

You know I was always wondering why Brawl and Wii U's event matches weren't as memorable, and for a long time I thought it was mostly just nostalgia. This goes a long way in explaining why Melee's event matches were the best though.

I just wished that there was a difficulty setting. Some of these events macthes were a bit much.
