- The King of the Zydeco, The Kind of the Bayous, The King of the South in a rare promotional video recorded late in his career. I received this VHS tape from a friend who recorded it from another friend, hence the less than stellar video quality. However, the music is great. Also in the video are CJ Chenier on sax, Harry Hypolite on guitar, and Cleveland Chenier on scrubboard.
My aunt went to a funeral in Mamou last week and the funeral home was playing this music. She said the dead man in the casket was snapping his fingers, his head bobbin side to side. Only Clifton and Jesus can bring'em back alive.
in the early 1980s, Ruthie's Inn on San Pablo in Berkeley was a punk venue. Except when Clifton Chenier came to town. Then it was HIS club, the place was packed and it was the most fun I ever had "working" at a show. I'd help him set up. He'd play 2 long sets, and I'd dance. End of the night, I'd help them load up and get paid, maybe $20. It was the best! Heaven on earth!
Enjoyed you sharing that memory 👍🏼
Ruthie's, having a major flashback!! Used to play there
The absolute king of zydeco. Nobody comes close!
Without a doubt..The Ruler.
Cliff, Lil Buck, John Hart, and Buckwheat hanging out at Club Zayante deep in the Santa Cruz Mtns circa 1977. I got to open for them once! Cliff was unstoppable…4hour sets. Cheers from the Micronesia Blues Society, island of Guam.
Great story. I lived in Guam as a child
Lived in Santa Cruz 70-72 Deep in the mountains could also describe Chateau Liberte. The two venues booked many of the same artists. As casual as it gets. Then or now. Saw Hot Tuna and others there, but wish today I'd seen Clifton then in his incomparable prime.
I met & Talked with King Clifton 2 Different times When he was playing at Fitzgerald’s a Club in Berwyn Illinois just outside Chicago what a great musician and gentlemen. I think his son & some of the bandmembers wanted me to take them into Chicago and buy some grass, respectfully I declined.

Does anyone have any recordings of Sonny Landreth playing with Clifton? :I know he did, but I'm not sure there's any recordings of it.
I saw Sonny play his Firebird w Clifton at JazzFest circa 1980… never saw any recordings…cheers from the Micronesia Blues Society, island of Guam
@@johnhoffman3836 Thanks, that gives me someplace to start looking around. I will come back and post if I find anything.
Sonny always talks about how inspirational it was playing with Clifton…he included one of Cliff’s sayings in his song.
I feel like a jet plane, I’m gonna take off
Johnny Winter asked Sonny, the first time he met him…”Is it true you played with Clifton Chenier?” lol
Now that’s good ole Louisiana stomping.
Watts genius❤
This be so bad, its sublime - Mr. Chenier is Howling Wolf, John Lee Hooke,r Muddy Waters on the accordion!
