I still know it all and can do the conversions pretty easily. But by the time I got to high school, it was pretty much abandoned. Still, I have to say, there has been no hardship in my life as a result of metric vs. American standard measurements.

    I had been using vinegar in a spray bottle for weeds between bricks. It worked, but had to do it a few times a season. Best done when there’s no rain forecast for the day. On a lark, I used a squeeze of shampoo to the vinegar spray bottle. Worked amazingly well, the detergent delivers the vinegar to the roots. Had basically just been doing leaves before, using soap gets down to the root structure. No comparison as for efficiency, adding soap to vinegar works.
    You can use a squeeze bottle, like ketchup bottle, stick a nail in the top to close until next time. Commentors asked about smell, any would dissipate. Shake the green area with your hand, you want to give ladybugs fair warning before spraying.
    Get kids to help you label and make, so we teach them--don’t cut butter with a chainsaw, vinegar and dishwashing liquid or shampoo works. (I have hosta in flower right now....no bees....we're damaging the environment with expensive sprays when simple vinegar works best).
    This year, think I’ll try it on kudzu leaves, being careful not to mess with the "host" tree bark. May or may not work to spray or paint kudzu leaves. If only I could find where it’s coming from the ground, getting roots directly would probably work.
    Like to suggest....save up glass cleaner bottles, or buy a few spray bottles from dollar store. When you make your vinegar-soap water, (salt is not needed) make some for neighbors and in-laws. Label contents by writing on a strip of blue painters tape what safe -liquid is contained in the bottle. We’re spreading the word by sharing that way......like this helpful video does. Simple things work, save the environment from chemicals, save money, save the bees. Thanks...you have a new subscriber. You’re saving the environment. Kind of you ...thanks.

    I tried it and it worked. Suggestion: I switched the sequence just a bit. First I poured the salt into container, then the vinegar. This way the vinegar washes any spilled salt into the sprayer (see 1:35) and gives your sprayer a better seal. Another option is to use a funnel for the salt. I appreciate your info as I have pets and grandchildren.

    Canadian cost check: 2L or roughly 1/2 gallon of Roundup was $40 at CT. I assume that Home Depot and others would be similar. This approach cost me $10 and isn’t toxic. I also don’t have to store the excess. I can just dump it in an area adjoining the walkway that is permeable with no plants. 👍 👍

    Most of you can’t do this but I own a “make your own” wine store. I bring home a batch of wine, 23 to 25 litres of Pino Grigio, and leave it in the sun for a day. I now have enough weed killer to cover my large gravel driveway. Costs me $40 a year and works like Roundup. (careful, it kills everything)

    I found this same concotion last year on another site. It really works good on the top part of the plant, but to make sure the roots are killed, a couple weeks later I poured the water/salt (without the vinegar) onto the same spot. That held them off last year, but this year a few weeds tried to sneak back up again, so I soaked them again.

    I was hoping to find a weedkiller that wouldn't damage other plants roots nearby. I've used salt neat (melted into warm water) and it works perfectly on its own. You don't need soap or vinegar if you're using salt, plain thick salt water even kills adult brambles.

    • @AbbyPenny
      @AbbyPenny  4 года назад +8

      The salt can work on its own, but it also will prevent future growth if used in high concentration. We had success using the formula in our video. We were able to spray the weeds and simply brush them into piles. It drastically cut down on the time needed to keep that pavered area weed free.

      "Salted Earth" won't grow Anything - Except dandelions ! The "Green Pepperami" of the Plant World !😟
      - for several years Unless you drench with water - especially after a Hot, Dry day/spell.
      A piece of grey 5in plastic pipe, about 6-10 inches long, pressed deep into soil around a pernicious weed - like dandelion/thistle etc will allow "Targeted" Weed-killing & Removal in about 2 - 4weeks !
      This is an old favourite, using a Table Salt & White Vinegar Mix in V.Hot water.
      A 2 - 4 litre (EU & UK)
      1 - 2 gallons (US.) Plastic Milk container.
      Put 4 ozs | 115 grams Table Salt into the container.
      Add 0.5 litres | 1Pint (US.) White Vinegar into the container.
      Fill container with V.Hot water ALMOST Full -But Not To The Top!
      Put on cap, take outside & give it a good shake to mix the ingredients.
      Pour Directly onto Weed and ½ fill the pipe off-cut - If Used !
      Otherwise, pour around weed, soaking soil out to about 3 - 4ins | 7.5 - 10cms out from the centre of the weed, in a roughly circular pattern.
      Another personal choice is to use an old bread knife or carving knife sharpened to allow cutting a Cross shaped split into the main stem\s of the weed. Perhaps an "Old Wives Tale"! but it's supposed to kill-off weeds quicker and last longer !
      I've never timed it myself, as I tend to remove dead weeds fairly quickly !
      BTW, I also cover the top of the pipe off-cut with a sandwich bag, or similar, to stop any rainfall washing out the "weed-killer".
      The still damp soil around the weed is easily removed and the bag on the upturned pipe makes disposal very easy.
      I'm loathe to use plastic bags, but I Won't put weeds into our Compost Bin. It's just giving the weeds seeds a perfect start in life ! So I'll bag them and put them into the General Waste or paper-bag them for the Incinerator Disposal at the Local Authority Waste Site.

    So, I've tried this a couple times, with about 700 sq ft of weeds (3 different properties). It works.. yes.. and it works quickly (5-24 hrs if it's nice and sunny). However, it's only temporary, and very temporary at that. Each time I've done it (almost 3 times, 2x on each property, and 1 extra on 1 property). It works for like a week. Then everything turns back to green and thrives lol. Regular (concentrate) weed killer is actually cheaper, and works 1000 times better and 1000x longer.

      My results exactly plus if vinegar and salt is used regularly it will completely kill the soil. To the point where absolutely nothing will grow in it. I suggest ppl pull weeds by hand or use a flamethrower. I’ve used mine for years. If you catch weeds early before they get a chance to seed you’ll be more effective in combating them. An ounce of prevention goes a long, long way. If you use regular products like roundup use them when the weeds are small. Cut the larger weeds down and hit them with roundup when the new shoots appear.

    • @robertthomas6127
      @robertthomas6127 4 года назад

      You are surely right about salt on concrete when over the years it is over done (such as in winter by snow) in particular when it is older or low quality mix. My assumption would be that a discoloration could occur from too much vinegar. Possibly when it is applied when it is too hot because the water evaporates too fast and too much of the mixture remains on the surface?

    • @mstreefern
      @mstreefern 2 года назад

      @@AbbyPenny First off, thanks for this! Speaking of pavers, with all due respect, you have way too many weeds growing between them! I think you'll have a LOT fewer if you actually deal with what appears to be non-existent sand between your pavers... Polymeric is a good choice but make sure you READ the directions/instructions first, or you could end up with a BIG mess on the surface of your pavers! Alternatively, and since you want to seal the pavers themselves, first replace the missing sand between your pavers, then seal both the sand and the pavers in one step.

    • @AbbyPenny
      @AbbyPenny  3 года назад

      I’ve never sprayed my beds, only hardscape like pavers and driveways. Vinegar will break down in the soil, but it will lower the pH of the soil (raise acidity), making it less suitable for some plants. If you choose to spray it in beds, don’t use the salt. As the effects from the salt can be longer lasting and more damaging to future growth.
