+s4ndwichMakeR ... I'm not aware of (m?)any phone cameras that incorporate such tech, at least not the optical type as used in prosumer and SLR digicams. It's a touch bulky. It might have software stabilisation, as do many phones and cheaper cameras, but that's rather more limited in its abilities. Plus, it can be switched off, and I have a feeling that they would have deliberately done that for the purposes of this video. It's possible to make a reasonably smooth shot with just your bare hands if you're really careful about it.

snowcatxx87 In my opinion RUclips video stabilization can do wonders. Yes, it does take some quality, but the degree of the quality you loose depends on the quality of your initial footage. To put it like this: if you have a really important video that is unwatchable because of the shakiness, losing some quality is not that big of a price to pay for these kinds of results. I tried out for myself, and if you wish you can see instructions and comparasents here: ruclips.net/video/BgAdeuxkUyY/видео.html

AdvancePlays Funny you should ask. Tiffen, the developers of the Steadicam, actually sell a ~ $150 stabilizer that's designed for phones/GoPros/etc. Now keep in mind that a stabilization gimbal primarily relies on physical size to do its job, so scaling it down literally makes it less effective. But the product reviews seem to skew positive, so I assume it's good enough. I don't know if you can make a gimbal much more affordable than that, at least. Not without making it pretty much useless.

I am a professional videographer and I have been using the old school steadicam solutions for quite some time now. Recently electronic gimbals are the big thing, which produce awesome results. With some practice even better than the oldschool approach. Nothing beats physically stabilizing video footage. Especially because you don't loose any resolution and sharpness.
But, and this is huge, I bought an iPhone 6 recently and I am absolutely blown away by its stabilisation. It has some sort of combined optical and software stabilisation that works incredibly good. It seems to be using the phone's sensors (accelerometer, gyroscopes and compass) to figure out and correct for camera movements. It even eases pans and tilts in and out. It's mindblowing!

What's worse is that many people use it when uploading old movies and such, which of course are utterly controlled and stable per the directors intentions... The result, as RUclips tries to "stabilize" intentional camera movements and character movements is typically absolutely dreadful, with parts of the scene constantly squirming and warping, etc. In many cases it's simply unwatchable.

One slight problem with doing it along the lines of stereoscopic movie is that stereo post conversion is done pretty much entirely by hand. All the object identification, geometry reconstruction and setting up of the reprojections is currently a manual process. Until there is a significant breakthrough in unassisted scene reconstruction tech, google will need several million folk working day and night to have that approach work.

  • @Redcap00

*I don't know anything about computers so this is probably wrong but*
All phones have a thing that senses the rotation and acceleration of the phone.
Couldn't we just stick that data somewhere in the videos code? (the rotation and how far the camera has moved since the last frame)
So when it's uploaded to RUclips or some program it can just create a virtual camera then invert all the movement data stuff that's attached with the video?
