Speaking of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the unmade epic he was going to do, Crusade, is the stuff of legend and would make a great What Could Have Been video. The script is online
It got microscopically close to shooting though. From what I’ve read/heard, Verhoeven was out of line during a meeting with the executives, and then they pulled the plug. It was the last straw.
As someone else said, having Arnold speak no lines of dialogue would have made this film like a two hour version of the last half an hour of Predator when he’s being chased alone. Aka Pure Cinema
I swear test audiences are the bane of Hollywood's creativity. They hate everything that goes out of the norm. They like safe, bland, repetitive stories. If you even hint at something original they'll cry like babies. Since we're talking about Schwarzenegger's unmade movies, a suggestion for a next video is the canceled sequel to Total Recall. That movie would have answered the question of the first film (was it real or all part of Quaid's manufactured dream?) and replaced it with a new twist. It sounded like a good movie, but it kept getting rejected.
Exactly! they don’t want to be challenged. It was a poor studio decision to change the ending and it was the whole point of the original book. where do they even get these test audiences from anyway?
Amazing Saturday morning gift! Love the idea of the first hour without dialogue, I think Arnold’s screen presence and the style of the movie wouldve really carried it well
Also, i wish the final film kept the alternate ending. Especially since if that sequel still happens, they'll probably retcon it to have that be the canon ending, anyways.
It's a shame. I am Legend is top 10 best novels I have read. Especially because of the ending. It's both poiant and heartbreaking at the same time. The ending basically takes a 180.
I can't help but think that studios underestimated Schwarzenegger on a few too many occasions. Did you know he was going to make a film about the First Crusade directed by Paul Verhoeven? Would love a video on that film, Bullets and Blockbusters. 🙏
I Am Legend is one of my favorite stories and I've found enjoyment in some way, shape, or form in all iterations. But this one...I think it easily could have been the best.
Here's a good idea for a future "Bullets & Blockbusters" video: *"GODZILLA Reborn", Joe Dante's Sequel to *"GODZILLA 2000"* Written by Michael Schlesinger (who also wrote the script for the U.S. Cut of *"GODZILLA 2000"),* the sequel was to have Godzilla arriving in Hawaii where he is then defeated by the U.S. military, but after a lava-bat monster called "Miba" emerged from the active Mauna Loa, Godzilla is revived and the two monsters then fought in a epic and serious battle. The movie was to have an all-star cast including Bruce Campbell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Lee, Leonard Nimoy, Scott Bakula, Robert Picardo, Belinda Balaski, Dick Miller, Ken Takakuda, & Shirō Sano (reprising his role as Shiro Miyasaka from *"GODZILLA* *2000")* and the special effects would have been done by Toho's very own SFX team. Toho approved the script, with one notable exception: Originally, Godzilla was to be killed by the U.S. military and is then cloned back to life to fight Miba. Another draft was written with Godzilla simply going into a coma after his defeat from the military. The film was to have a mere $20 million budget, but when producer Sid Ganis tried to get to the new Columbia head of production to read the script, he said "I'm not interested in $20 million movies!", and the project was canned as a result.
In the early 2000s, screenwriters Andrew Kevin Walker and Akiva Goldsman wrote a screenplay for a Batman Vs Superman flick that would’ve relaunched both the Batman and Superman franchises. Wolfgang Peterson was set to direct, and Johnny Depp and Josh Harnett were reportedly set to play Batman and Superman, but other rumored castings were Colin Farrell and Jude Law, James Franco and Paul Walker, etc. It would’ve been similar to the Batman V. Superman we got, but would’ve been much more derivative of The Dark Knight Returns, featuring a Bruce Wayne who has to come out of retirement after his fiancée is murdered, not exactly like the famous comic, but similar. Lex Luthor would’ve still been the main villain, but would’ve worked with The Joker to manipulate Batman and Superman into fighting. The film leads up to Batman going to kill The Joker as revenge for his fiancée, but Superman stops him as he doesn’t want Batman to go down the path of killing. The two clash it out over their morals before they realize that they’ve been manipulated by The Joker and Lex Luthor. Overall, the film would’ve explored the morals of the two heroes and questioned whether a hero needs to kill. However, it ultimately fell about when J.J. Abrams pitched his Superman script, Superman: Flyby, and WB liked it. Sorry for the long comment, and for any errors since I typed this on my phone.
As someone who read I Am Legend, this version sounds much closer to the novella. I wish they made this one instead. I didn't much like the Will Smith version because it strayed too far from the original story.
You should really look into the first lego movie. It had a really interesting development hell, and the first script made before Phil Lord wrote one made a producer cry I think lol
I like the design of the creatures as I wish they could have kept that along with the Original mask for the Green goblin for the first Spider-Man movie and Snake face Voldemort.
From Ridley's approach, there could have been interesting similarities to Blade Runner. Sullen hero, going into the city and facing off against humanoid creatures, that ultimately we see have feelings and a sense of family. The tone also seems similar to Blade Runner, slow and moody. Sparse dialog. The woman he rescues also seems akin to Rachel, in that how he sees her as more than one of the horde, and she humanizes him. Living in the countryside, having escaped the hell of the city, also seems to be what would have happened after Blade Runner's Theatrical Cut ending. This could have made up for Blade Runner's lack of box office success.
This sounds like the best movie that could have been that you have covered yet! Hopefully someone can take this version of the film and run with it whenever I Am Legend gets remade again in the next 10-20 years. Especially since it keeps closer to the source material with Neville being a regular guy and not a doctor who was already working on the cure.
Great stuff, mate. I love how you spliced existing movies together to help us visualise it. 1 hour of no speaking could be fantastic. 'The Artist' proved it can work
I actually really like IAL. It's not surprising, however, that the alternative ending screened bad twice, as that ending was never going to fly in Bush's America.
This movie must definitely existed on the alternate timeline seen on "The Flash". This film could benefit from the William Gibson's Alien 3 comic book adaptation. And I didn't know that the original ending from the 2007 adaptation wasn't liked by test audiences, that ending is so much better and interesting than the final cut. The one thing I like about the Darkseekers from the 2007 adaptation was the hyperventilating breathing, like they have a lot of energy and adreanline flowing in their organism.
Schwarzenegger was like the The Rock today. In damn near every other movie for a decades. Except Arnold is wayyyy better actor in comparison Edit: but never forget if the multiverse is real, there’s a universe where we got Arnold as Doctor Octopus
Schwarzenegger revealed in his autobiography that one of the reasons he become governor was because suddenly he had more time, offers weren't coming in and his phone stopped ringing. Because of his heart surgeries, which got very serious, he believes this caused the audiences and Hollywood to see him in a different light. He was no longer the invincible macho man who could never get hurt.
I never got the hate for the theateral ending. I like the message of more with someone becoming a legend by sacrificing themselves to save humanity than the other version where he drives away, giving the impression that people should not strive for anything good and just give up. Plus, the ending in the theatrical cut is closer to the book where both characters off themselves.
In September 13, 2005, Warner Bros. Approached Guillermo Del Toro To Direct The Third Film Adaptation Of Richard Matheson’s Novel I Am Legend Which Would’Ve Started Johnny Depp. However, Guillermo Del Toro Chose To Direct Hellboy II: The Golden Army Instead
I Am Legend is itself set in an alternate dimension, where Batman V Superman was made. There's a billboard for it visible. At least the planned early 00's one, directed by Wolfgang Petersen. As this film was shot in 2006, it's fair to assume they weren't aware Zack Snyder's 2016 film would be made.
2:17 Actually "Batman & Robin" was Joel Schumacher's second Batman film. Tim Burton made two, Joel Schumacher made two. The unmade "Batman Triumphant" would have been his third if it had gotten greenlit. Just thought I'd let you know that my good sir. 😊
On the topic of Ridley Scott, I heard that the original script for his version of Robin Hood was a reimagining of the character as the bad guy and the Sheriff of Nottingham was the good guy but somebody chickened out and we got a forgettable , unsatisfying film instead. Is there a full Bullets and Blockbusters video to be made out of it? I don't know.
This really sounds like it would've been truly unique. While I did enjoy the Will Smith version (CGI or not), Scott's version sounds like he wanted to do something truly psychological and disturbing. Plus, I like the idea of not having any dialogue for the first hour, as it would've made the audience feel isolated along with Robert. I also would've had it that there would be little to no music in the film, which could further drive in the point that Robert is all alone and would've added more to the atmosphere. Plus, the design of the vampires would've been fantastic, and based on the test photographs and concept art, it was. It's a shame that the fx crew went through all of those tests and concepts, only for the studio to kick the bucket on the project.
Great work as always. I been watching your videos for awhile now, and been watching different ones and you do amazing work with great information i never knew. I'm a movie lover. All things movies. Keep up the great work and always looking forward to your uploads 🍻
Imagine the one-liners he would have... to himself, lol. But hearing him have one-liners to zombies would've been something. In the way John Matrix delivered them.
I am Legend: Prime Arnold version Zombies: we are taking over the world! Arnie: I eat zombies for breakfast, and right now i am very hungry! Zombies: oh shi-! The End.
And in the end, the oficial ending is the one that he lives, since i am legend 2 is in development with will smith, will they show the movie again in theater with the original ending ?
This actually sounds like it would have been a good version (not sure about the Emma part, though), really showing Neville's isolation from the world around him. (A whole hour without talking? Too avant garde for a blockbuster.) The shame is it does what every other adaption does: it shows other uninfected people, kinda missing the point of the book. It's still a shame it didn't happen, though. As for Richard Matheson, the man deserves more respect. It's hard to look at horror and science fiction and not see his fingerprints somewhere.
Can’t believe they scrapped the original vampire designs. They would have been so gnarly and terrifying instead of the half baked going to the store mannequins that we got
Im amazed by the time and effort you put in your videos because most other youtubers dont have the commitment you do and one more question do you work on these videos yourself or do you have people help you
Anyone that has read the book would know this really isn't a big budget action movie. It's in the same wheelhouse as buried and locke and say a quite place.
Spit out my drink after talking about Schwarzenegger being at a low point after playing Mr. Freeze. Warner brothers getting cold feet. I shouldn’t have laughed that hard.
It was enough early draft done by Max Borenstein [before uncredited rewrites by David Goyer and Frank Derabont] so there isn't really anything note worthy tbh.
Hey, you have to do "What could have been Ridley Scott's Galdiator II" with Maximus waking up in the afterworld, fighting God's and coming to life again. What the hell, man?!
I understand wanting to see what would have been. But… Was it a faithful adaption? No. Did the CGI age well? Not really. It’s a slower burn psychological “horror” Seeing him slowly lose his humanity. The scenes of him driving through deserted New York streets with that red Mustang. The scene where the vampires set a trap using “Frank” and Nevel quite literally loses his mind. The scene he has to kill his dog, his last living friend - last connection to what the world used to be/ his family. I Am Legend created its own way and became a legend itself. It’s a fantastic film that focused less on action. The alternate ending is also the canon ending with the new Michael B Jordan film following it. I personally always enjoyed it more than the theatrical ending. Wish they would have somehow mixed the two into one, both endings have parts that are great, and parts that are dull. Could’ve made for a more complete film, imo.
I think I Am Legend is an interesting take on a "zombie" apocalypse. While it still fails to provide a compelling story and world building, I think it stands out as one of the more decent Zombie media. Also Im pretty sure Ive already pitched this to you on the original Avengers video. But it would be extremely cool if you could go in depth on the original ideas of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Since there are more things Ive uncovered from different books and posts on online that paint a pretty sound structure of what the film could've been before, the plethrra of script changes and editing cuts. Great video, btw Love the channel and keep it up, man!

Zombies: we are taking over the world!
Arnie: I eat zombies for breakfast, and right now i am very hungry!
Zombies: oh shi-!
The End.
I wanna know what were the Bruce Willis-isms Terry Gilliam told him to avoid - that sounds fascinating...
And in the end, the oficial ending is the one that he lives, since i am legend 2 is in development with will smith, will they show the movie again in theater with the original ending ?
It sounds like the movie would have revealed the twist about Neville halfway through.
I just saw Gladiator II (Which was pretty good btw) it's not surprising to see Ridley Scott themed video. Nice!
Can’t believe they scrapped the original vampire designs. They would have been so gnarly and terrifying instead of the half baked going to the store mannequins that we got
The original ending was badass!
Im amazed by the time and effort you put in your videos because most other youtubers dont have the commitment you do and one more question do you work on these videos yourself or do you have people help you
Thanks! I do all the research and writing and sometimes I edit them or someone on my team does
Anyone that has read the book would know this really isn't a big budget action movie. It's in the same wheelhouse as buried and locke and say a quite place.
I actually prefer the alternate ending as oppose to the theatrical one where he blows himself up... But then again I like film that makes you think.
I love this channel! ❤
I really want to see this film and it sounds awesome.
Spit out my drink after talking about Schwarzenegger being at a low point after playing Mr. Freeze. Warner brothers getting cold feet. I shouldn’t have laughed that hard.
Any plans on discussing what could have been John Carpenters original plans for the Halloween Anthology Series before Michael Myers got so popular?
Yup!
Have you guys done Godzilla 2014 (2012 Screenplay)?
Not yet but we did Godzilla 94
It was enough early draft done by Max Borenstein [before uncredited rewrites by David Goyer and Frank Derabont] so there isn't really anything note worthy tbh.
Hey, you have to do "What could have been Ridley Scott's Galdiator II" with Maximus waking up in the afterworld, fighting God's and coming to life again.
What the hell, man?!
I did. Got taken down by paramount lol
@@Bulletsandblockbusters Noooooo, I missed that. Any chance of a reupload?
Yup. Check now. Threw it up just for you
@@Bulletsandblockbusters you're amazing, man!
This could've been absolutely brilliant!
I understand wanting to see what would have been. But…
Was it a faithful adaption? No.
Did the CGI age well? Not really.
It’s a slower burn psychological “horror”
Seeing him slowly lose his humanity.
I really like I Am Legend but it's nothing like the book it's based on.
I would've loved to have seen this.
another amazing video
Thanks!
This one of my favorite channels hands down.
Thanks!
Damn, I'm usually just like "that's interesting" about these videos, but this one.... I really want to see this version! It sounds so good.
Read the book.
