hey, i noticed in the video that you mentioned used wax paper in the oven when baking clay. im not sure if that was just a mistake and you were actually using parchment paper, but i just wanted to make sure i pointed it out to anyone who sees this video in the future to _not_ put wax paper in the oven. it could melt or even catch fire! wax paper starts to melt around 200 degrees, which is typically lower than the temp you would use to bake clay. otherwise, great video!
Polymer is usually baked at 180 Celcius but yeah! Thank you for sharing that coz yikes!
@@Rikeilan ah, i should have specified i meant fahrenheit, haha 😅. polymer clay is cooked around 275F, whereas wax paper starts to melt around 200F
@@IsisNiko Ohhhh! Yeah that makes sense! That is really good to know, thank you!
So i have to use just aluminum foil?
@@howth_ you could use aluminum foil OR parchment paper. just no wax paper, as it will burn. i personally prefer to use parchment paper, myself
Pasta machines ROCK. You can also use them to condition your clay if you have arthritis. But be careful when switching from dark colors to light as some clay will get stuck in the machine and later come out on what ever your currently running. Also you can bake flat pieces on top of a piece of paper so that the back does not get those lame shiny spots or bake rounded pieces inside of polyfil so they don't get flat spots. I do this because I don't generally glaze and need my pieces to look nice out of the oven.
Love this channel, always fun!
Messmaker9000 You really shouldn't use the pasta machine to condition the clay if you just pick it up. It can be too hard and ruin the pasta machine by pushing the rollers a part too much. You can kneaders, that press the clay to soften before use.
***** I imagine you could damage one but I haven't had any issue and I've had my machine for several years. It just takes a little common sense not to over burden your equipment. ;-)
Awesome, I didn't know that about the varnish! Thank you! :D also another tip, that's a bit quicker, for fixing clay that is too soft! Massage in a little corn starch powder and it's harder in seconds! 👍
Awesome tip! thanks!
Awesome and helpful tips just was newbies are looking for.
OHMAHGAWSH!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! NOW I KNOW HOW TO SOFTEN MY CLAY!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Verei Chelevrilon =D
Good Advice..I even learned a couple of new things...Thanx...R.
Thanks for those awesome tips.
Thanks! My clay is hard, thought I had to throw it out! Cant wait to try the baby oil trick!
Thank u for this tutorial ❤❤
So.... is acrylic painting varnish safe also ? It's water base too so I wonder...
Any acrylic, water based, i.e. You can clean it up with soap and water, varnish can be used to varnish your projects.
Nice video, but I don't even have polymer clay XD Where can you get the clay? Liked the vid, too :)
I like the hardware store glaze hack the best
You should do an update to you clay and risen tips ☺️
I... LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!
Hello! Nice video! Very informative and well put together.
I've been having a few problems recently. You see I live in Australia and the Arts and Crafts stores sell sculpey but only in very few colours!
I know that all clay works well but when I used a different brand it came out of the oven black??
Do you think I should keep using the clay I was previously or hunt down some Sculpey?
Also sorry if there are any English or Grammar mistakes I wrote this in a rush :0
check the temperature settings on the other brand. They're probably different than sculpey, so you over baked them. Sorry about the burning by the way, it always sucks to see something you put a lot of effort into go to waste.
Molly Douglas It's possible you used modeling clay. That's not something you should bake. It's air dry clay ^_^
Tarkitten ah! Thank you for your help!
NerdECrafter Okay! Thanks : D I'll be more careful next time :0
Thank you, so useful!
Thx for the hacks it realy help me and can you make a clay erplane cause my big sis wants me to make one and i dont now how plzz and thx for hacks btw
love your vids
NerdECrafter Do you think you could make a chibi Daenerys Targaryen? :3
GIRL! Thank you thank you thank you! I am just getting started with polymer clay and this was SO helpful, especially about the sealant! :D
LOVE YOU KATIE!!!! 😍😍😘😘
The only 2 RUclipsrs I watch is you and Jackie. I love watching yalls older videos! :-)
wow i just found u on a craft video i feel so special lol
What id poly clay is too hard to work with it???
Usually I just perservere and keep trying (helps when you are watching RUclips to give you something to do) or heat it up with something like over the radiator or hairdryer.
You can bake round pieces on top of cornstarch so they don’t come out with a flat side. It brushes off after baking. I also make tiny “donuts” of aluminum foil to bake my charms on so the bottom doesn’t burn. I reuse the foil, and the cornstarch can be reused a few times too, just make sure to not put it back with the starch used for food.
Put a sheet of plastic between the book and the oily clay. Otherwise the oil may seep through the paper and into the paper of the book's cover. Thanks for a great vid.
Would you be better to use a few sheets of paper? I think that the point of the paper was to absorb moisture. Plastic would stop this happening.??
2020 plz save the planet
this is a great video and very helpful!! I didn't know about the nail polish one xD
***** Pleasure =D
Hi lizhu :D
I think she said nail polish REMOVER, aka acetone. It is a good solvent that affects many polymers and plastics. Works well for what she suggests.
if you dont wanna buy a pasta machine you could also use a tortilla maker, it takes up less space
god of RAGE im mexican i have like 20 of these and no pasta machine ty for the tip :)
Welcome
Sombre kat my mexican friend
you can also use two coins at the side of the clay and roll it so it will get as thick as the coins
the best tips are always in the comments
NerdECrafter- I recently learned that you can also use eye shadow on polymer in place of Pearl Ex or Perfect Pearls. Although the later two are far superior products, I did try the eye shadow trick as I had a bunch of cheapo pallets that I hadn't thrown away in pretty copper, gold, and other brilliant colors. I was blown away how awesome some of my pieces turned out.
Thanks for this tip :)
Thanks!
I dont have pearl ex so I have been using my eye shadows but it doesnt seem to be as nice looking .. I am going to invest in the mica powders after all.. a little at a time and with coupons of course..colored pastel chalks might be better but I dont have any of those on hand either
How do you use the eyeshadow? Knead it into the clay? Dust the outside before baking? I'm new and curious lol
When I actually start using clay I'll have to remember this. This is weird to admit but I frequent your channel even though I do not craft with clay (yet). I instead needle felt and use your videos as inspiration to get me into an artsy mood. I am sure there are others out there that do this too... maybe? XD I stumbled onto you a little more than half a year ago when I was really depressed and you got me back in the game. My crafting got me focused again on other things and life got better. My mother and me have even taken it upon ourselves to start a project this week for the cancer patients (children) at the hospital down the street (5 minutes up the road). We are making little head bands with feathers (think 1920s head pieces) and all sorts of things adorning them. This way they do not feel so bare up top. Thank you for the inspiration to craft and to help others through crafting just like you do.
Omg nether did I but wen I got polymer clay I cheered up and started making more and more and was so happy now I am hoping to sell them on etsy u are so inspiring and I hope ur progect goes well sorry for speling mistakes bye tnk u
Baking on waxed paper can be problematic, because the wax will melt and get on the back of your piece. You can prevent burning by getting a super cheap-o tile from the hardware store to bake on. Put a piece of white paper between it and your piece if you don't want shiny spots on the back. And yes, tent a piece of foil over the top, that works well.
If you get a big can of varathane, it will last a lot longer if you transfer a small amount into a smaller container to work out of, and leave the big can closed and stored away most of the time.
I'd like to add some tips. The pasta machine gets really dirty and leaves streaks. You can disassemble the machine to the bare minimum of just the rollers and crank, which will allow for easier cleaning and still works for rolling clay. For cleaning, take some paper towels and douse them with enough olive oil to make them very moist, but not drippy. Then run them through the machine at a snug thickness to clean the rollers.
Furthermore, polymer clay is PVC, which despite the claims of being non-toxic, is toxic and hormone-inhibiting. BAD. You can't simply wash your hands with soap and water after working the clay. Baby wipes don't cut it, either. You need oil to remove it. I prefer olive oil, because baby oil is a petroleum product, and that's gross. You can make your own wipes using paper towels and a plastic tub:
First, get a tupperware or re-use a baby wipes tub. Prepare the paper towels. Fold them so that they will stack into the tub. In a large bowl, add 1/2 cup olive oil, several drops of essential oil for scent (I like lavender) and 1 cup or so of distilled water. Whisk or stir vigorously until the mixture is well-blended, then IMMEDIATELY pour over the paper towels in the tub, so that they soak up the mixture before the water and oil separates. If you need more liquid, mix some more oil and water separately and them pour over. You can use these to clean your hands after working with clay. Afterward, use soap and water to wash your hands, or simply dry with a towel for nice, moisturized hands.
Alcohol works better than oil.
Kim beadyeyedbrat Kennedy Alcohol dries hands and if you're claying full time or have dry skin this can lead to cracks or bleeding. Oil keeps hands soft and claying without pain.
This was for cleaning the pasta machine not using on hands.
Right. Whoops. Well, useful tip all the same. Also, do oil your gears if you can take yours apart to the gears.
How can I save this suggestion?
THE HACK FOR THE TOO SOFT CLAY SAVED MY LIFE YOU GENIUS WOMAN
If you don't want to use shaved pastels for coloring on clay (or mixing with TLS), I find that shaving off baked clay parts works too. Though I'm not a complete expert, this worked for me and it turned out amazingly.
my favorite hack was the baby oil one. my clay would always break apart and I couldn't be able to make charms but now that I've seen this video it has helped a lot. thanks Jackie
Guess who's watching this in 2019?
Jessica Walters you? Me?
Yo-
Me
oh hi
Jessica Walters it’s September 2020 for me now! Lol!
OMG, where was this video 30 minutes ago (hahaha)...I just used white polymer clay for the first time (I usually use black or other dark colors) and the white was a nightmare to work with. I wish I would've known about using the rubbing alcohol trick sooner. I was trying to pick all the fuzz, flecks, and other bits of other clay off the white, as everything seemed to show up. I will use your trick next time. I also really love the baby oil trick to recondition dry clay. THANKS A BUNCH FOR THESE TIPS!
towersong13 ugh I HATE using white clay. I can't keep the cat hair off of it.
DO NOT PUT WAX PAPER IN YOUR OVEN!
Parchment paper won't burn, wax paper could catch fire.
please know you’re the reason why i started to sculpt with clay when in my early elementary years. i’m in high school now and i have my own business selling clay earrings.
You are a lifesaver! I was in dire need of a new material to add to my portfolio (I study applied art techniques) and I rushed into polymer clay. I had disaster after disaster! Now I followed your hacks and hey presto, hello doll!
Thank you so much!!!!😁😁😁😁😁
You deserve a donut!🍩
HA! That's hilarious 😂
Newest subscriber here! I love this tutorial, there were a couple I knew but the Vaseline or baby oil to soften hard or dried clay was a new one for me! And to think that I've been wasting money on "Polymer Clay Softener" at about $7.00 for a tiny 1 or 2 oz bottle--maddening! And the water based varnish, another big money saver! Thank you so much for the wonderful tips! I can't wait to dig into the rest of your channel.
Can you help me?? I use a little conventional oven, I heard its not good to cook my projects in my oven. My creations come out not being very strong and If I wanted to I could break it easy? Is this normal, please any advice would help. Thank you
Great video! 😊💕
Can you make anything spongebob related tutorial? I'm a huge fan of the show and I'll love to see something like that on your channel 😊
About the leeching of soft clays... Premo clay is much much better(not as soft and MUCH more durable after being baked) than sculpyIII which I think you've said you use quite a lot. If you haven't tried it, do! It's so much easier to work with and your items won't break like sculpyIII does. That would be my one hack/tip for other crafters:)
WOWWWWW Iv'e been searching on here for HOURS and then their was you I LOVEEEE YOUR HACKS keep the the good work and thanks for sharing
You spend to much time asking if we could like and subscribe
Buttt thanks for the tips.
I really aprishiate the vid because I just got into
making stuff with fimo and I wish send you some stuff
😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
And take my useful hack ever for soft clay 😉... Use some "Corn Starch" to make it harder. (you can tes it to small piece)❤️ from egypt ❤️🇪🇬
Thank yooou!!! I’ve experienced all of these and I will gladly take your advice. I just started and this helps tremendously!
Can u do Joy from inside out the new Disney movie pleazzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😃
wow its nice now i can make my clay clean or hard or soft and i also dont know how to bake it but i knew thanx its helpful👏👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌😍😍😍😘😘💖💖💕❤
Putting clay in the freezer for a little bit will make it less soft.
Hayden Levy I’m not doubting this but that’s weirdly unexpected
And using WD-40 to soften clay? baby oil/petroleum jelly is cheaper but I already have WD-40, tried it and it works! (but don't know what'll happen when it's baked... yolo?)
Also, how I clean myself after getting my hands stained with residual clay?
Cool. It's interesting that you and PolymerClayTutor both say "Pha-stah". Michigan? Minnesota? Where every place I've been people say "pah-stah".
Baby wipes work great for cleaning pasta machine and marble slab you work on. Buy the cheapest you can find. Do not wear cashmere or other wool sweaters while working with PC. The wool fibers get everywhere on the clay and are very hard to pick off. Pet hair ditto. I buy SMALL amounts of Varathane from polymerclayexpress.com. I am a professional PC artist and would not use up a six ounce jar in two years (and even then it thickens and I add water eventually). It would take me 30 years to use up a quart, the size that this tute shows. So sometimes smaller amounts are more cost effective unless you have 20 friends who want to buy a can and divide it among yourselves. Say you are making a brooch with parts of clay that stick out. To cure, cut up a cereal box and into tiny pieces to stack under parts that stick out so they don't slump when curing. Set up toaster oven on a protected spot outdoors (porch, etc.) Do not bake inside house b/c fumes are toxic. Never use a clay tool like a pasta machine, toaster oven, cookie cutters, etc. for food prep. When you discard such tools or appliances write in big letters in dark marker: THIS ITEM WAS USED FOR POLYMER CLAY. TOXIC: DO NOT USE FOR FOOD PREP! Be responsible for your trash. You can set items on blankets of polyester fiber fill to bake, and use it over and over. I also use plain typing paper under clay, but don't put the clay on the paper for too long a time b/c you don't want the oils from the clay to soak into the paper. I wrap clay canes in plastic wrap. I buy Total Home stretch-tite brand plastic wrap at CVS b/c Saran Wrap brand breaks down and shrivels around the clay. Total Home brand never breaks down; but eventually you will rewrap canes anyway, because after wrapping and unwrapping for a year the wrap no longer sticks and your canes begin to get messy. So I rewrap once a year and then also smush up any canes I am not using or dissatisfied with, to use as mold making clay, or clay that will be covered, say, for beads. See my clay work at www.sweetchildjewelry.etsy.com
How about a space themed project? Like an ASRONAUT! Or just generally something spacey
Thank u I love the one with the book and paper 😁😊📑📰.I don't have a pasta roller thing dose it cost a lot of money😣😲😞😒😩😥😊🙌🙋😫😓💲💲💰

WHY did using petroleum jelly never occur to me? I always have that for keeping ice off doggy paws in the winter, but my baby oil has gone missing.
U have saved my life I work at a rabbit rescue volonterrly and babysit so my lil cuz so I don't get much money lol my brother is spoylat and gets what he wants when he wants I'm 15 he is 18 and still has no job and mooching off my mum xD but Yeh if you haven't allredy made a vid about cheap aulturnitives or best clays to use can u I'll stalk your channel to see if u have but thank you for wasting your time reading this ^.^ sorry for my bad spelling I have a submarine in my hand that's giving me fake blood :D I think
New to polymer clay, never used it. I want to make embellishments for hair sticks by wrapping the clay around wooden sticks, do you think that would work?
You shouldn't leech your polyclay. Try chilling, or mixing with either a harder clay or what I do is crush my scraps from carving/shaving cured pieces. Also don't forget to rinse off if you use nail polish remover. You don't want it to eat your clay.
Subscribed.
Thanks for the content.
Keep up the good work.

NerdeCrafter, I adore your videos. The artist ones & the fun craft kits. But I have to say- that I bought my pasta machine from the “clay aisle” in a craft store, 20 years ago. so is it really a hack? The rest are awesome tips!
Never work!! I tried everything. Basically I spend more time cleaning than working on the project.
I'm confused. at about 1:37 you say you can use Vaseline or baby oil but the screen say NOT vaseline! Which is it? Otherwise, great video
Awsome, this was extremely helpful for a beginner, and I would imagine even someone who has been working with clay. I don't know because I am just starting :)
I am using polymer clay on a home made pottery wheel.... but the clay is too solid. So I will use your idea to put baby oil on the clay to make it more pliable. That should solve my problem. Now I can make nice CHESS PIECES on the pottery wheel using polymer clay. thanks.
My big projects fall apart.
Even after i make aluminum foil base the disconnected parts break.
Awesome! Especially the pasta rolling machine, why didn't I think of that?
I’m pretty sure if you borrowed grandma’s pasta machine, and used it for clay, retuned it to her and said you can’t use that for food anymore… she might be upset.
Thanks for the tips
I'm a beginner. I might make another RUclips all about polymer clay or just make videos on my original channel about it lol. Do you know any beginner tutorials? I can make a snow cone with a face and a cupcake lol.
Isopropyl alcohol is a life saver when it comes to removing acrylic paint mistakes on your polymer clay projects
you can also use cards if you can't afford a pasta machine. take the desired thickness and put 2 stacks of cards one on each side of the clay and roll out the clay. the cards will keep the clay at the thickness you wanted. its cheaper then the machine.
Omg vintage NerdE vids!! 😍 I've just got started with polymer clay and was hoping you'd have some tips. What a salty gem 🧂💎 ❤
Omgggg I looked online for how to soften hard clay and only found complicated tutorials..is it really as easy as adding baby oil or Vaseline!!! Ugh and I've been struggling with throwing it away and now I don't have to! Yayyy
I like polymer clay I saw it at Wal-Mart they have dotting tools a exato knife chalk pastels glaze e600 glue acerlyc paint
hey ya^^ I always get dust on my clay no matter that I wash my hands and desk before I start working with the clay. can you give me an advice how to get rid of it?._.
What is a good surface to work on? So it doesn't stick to it? Im new to polymer clay. Does the rubbing alcohol work on surfaces?
Can you mix elmers glue on polymer clay since elmwrs glue is waterbased..please answer thanks..
another awesome way to make dry clay soft and supple again is to use some goopy to soft clay.. crumble it up.. take some to soft gooy clay and roll it out.. then. put crumbled up dry clay on the goopy clay you have rolled out.. and then fold it all up inside and work it.. after its worked in.. take some more crumbly clay and put it in the clay you are working and keep doing it till the clay is all the consistency you want
I just wanted to share this; if you by any chance don't have rubbing alcohol or any thing I found out that you can put a little hand sanitizer on a q tip and it works the same for cleaning off dust particles
Me be like I just started polymer clay crafting I can’t do thing like this
I enjoyed this video
+Montreal Confections AH!! Hey =D Thank you
+NerdECrafter you are the person who got me into crafting!
OMG the fingerprint one and dirt always gets on my clay which ruins it that trick is prefect! thank you!
For hack 2 I found it best to use a glass pan because I bake clay too and I used a medal pan for my first creation and it got burnt and then switched to glass and my creations didn't burn.
I can use the hack about softening clay and to make sure my glaze is water and not spirit based. Thanks!
Tell me... Can you add new clay to an already baked piece of clay and then bake it all together in the oven? Or is there a problem with baking already baked clay?
great info but...vaseline is petroleum jelly, vaseline is just thr brand name
I had to fix a piece with unbaked clay but the piece was originally baked and this time I baked it for to long and the baked clay if now to soft and quite frame is there anything I can do
Thanks alot, my figures always have so much dust and fingerprints on it
hi i know this question sounds stupid but can u use rubbing alcohol before you bake and it wont catch fire in the oven will it xxx from using the rub on alcohol
Could you tell me what is the kind of polymar clay who the sculptor making on the net and making faces of actors and footballer I tried to know but no answer it contains lots of color but face is like flesh color
I wanted to make a clay sculpture but the total price with all the colors I need was $40, what are some alternates to Sculpey?
thanks for the video now I'm going to try baby oil on my clay your video is really helpful
My faves are softening and hardening clay and the nail polish remover thingy-majiggy
You can speed up the leeching process to make your clay harder by using your pasta machine and the paper together instead of a book.
Your clay press looks a lot like the one I got for Christmas just more expensive cuase of the brand name on top
Ehh nailpolish remover kinda melted the surface of my clay...
My clay oozed put in microwave any tips how to bake it in microwave???
I knew all those too but I had to do a lot of hunting to find out that information. :) Wish this video existed when I started working with clay. :D I am sure it is going to help a lot of new people. Maybe you should update the description and tags so when people are searching for things like cleaning clay, softening clay, etc. they can find this video?
