hey, i noticed in the video that you mentioned used wax paper in the oven when baking clay. im not sure if that was just a mistake and you were actually using parchment paper, but i just wanted to make sure i pointed it out to anyone who sees this video in the future to _not_ put wax paper in the oven. it could melt or even catch fire! wax paper starts to melt around 200 degrees, which is typically lower than the temp you would use to bake clay. otherwise, great video!
You can bake round pieces on top of cornstarch so they don’t come out with a flat side. It brushes off after baking. I also make tiny “donuts” of aluminum foil to bake my charms on so the bottom doesn’t burn. I reuse the foil, and the cornstarch can be reused a few times too, just make sure to not put it back with the starch used for food.
When I actually start using clay I'll have to remember this. This is weird to admit but I frequent your channel even though I do not craft with clay (yet). I instead needle felt and use your videos as inspiration to get me into an artsy mood. I am sure there are others out there that do this too... maybe? XD I stumbled onto you a little more than half a year ago when I was really depressed and you got me back in the game. My crafting got me focused again on other things and life got better. My mother and me have even taken it upon ourselves to start a project this week for the cancer patients (children) at the hospital down the street (5 minutes up the road). We are making little head bands with feathers (think 1920s head pieces) and all sorts of things adorning them. This way they do not feel so bare up top. Thank you for the inspiration to craft and to help others through crafting just like you do.
Omg nether did I but wen I got polymer clay I cheered up and started making more and more and was so happy now I am hoping to sell them on etsy u are so inspiring and I hope ur progect goes well sorry for speling mistakes bye tnk u
NerdECrafter- I recently learned that you can also use eye shadow on polymer in place of Pearl Ex or Perfect Pearls. Although the later two are far superior products, I did try the eye shadow trick as I had a bunch of cheapo pallets that I hadn't thrown away in pretty copper, gold, and other brilliant colors. I was blown away how awesome some of my pieces turned out.
I dont have pearl ex so I have been using my eye shadows but it doesnt seem to be as nice looking .. I am going to invest in the mica powders after all.. a little at a time and with coupons of course..colored pastel chalks might be better but I dont have any of those on hand either
Usually I just perservere and keep trying (helps when you are watching RUclips to give you something to do) or heat it up with something like over the radiator or hairdryer.
You are a lifesaver! I was in dire need of a new material to add to my portfolio (I study applied art techniques) and I rushed into polymer clay. I had disaster after disaster! Now I followed your hacks and hey presto, hello doll!
my favorite hack was the baby oil one. my clay would always break apart and I couldn't be able to make charms but now that I've seen this video it has helped a lot. thanks Jackie
If you don't want to use shaved pastels for coloring on clay (or mixing with TLS), I find that shaving off baked clay parts works too. Though I'm not a complete expert, this worked for me and it turned out amazingly.
Newest subscriber here! I love this tutorial, there were a couple I knew but the Vaseline or baby oil to soften hard or dried clay was a new one for me! And to think that I've been wasting money on "Polymer Clay Softener" at about $7.00 for a tiny 1 or 2 oz bottle--maddening! And the water based varnish, another big money saver! Thank you so much for the wonderful tips! I can't wait to dig into the rest of your channel.
please know you’re the reason why i started to sculpt with clay when in my early elementary years. i’m in high school now and i have my own business selling clay earrings.
Pasta machines ROCK. You can also use them to condition your clay if you have arthritis. But be careful when switching from dark colors to light as some clay will get stuck in the machine and later come out on what ever your currently running. Also you can bake flat pieces on top of a piece of paper so that the back does not get those lame shiny spots or bake rounded pieces inside of polyfil so they don't get flat spots. I do this because I don't generally glaze and need my pieces to look nice out of the oven. Love this channel, always fun!
Messmaker9000 You really shouldn't use the pasta machine to condition the clay if you just pick it up. It can be too hard and ruin the pasta machine by pushing the rollers a part too much. You can kneaders, that press the clay to soften before use.
***** I imagine you could damage one but I haven't had any issue and I've had my machine for several years. It just takes a little common sense not to over burden your equipment. ;-)
These are so helpful! I didn't know that nail polish remover can clean clay after its baked. And the one about clay that is too soft will help me a TON.
Omgggg I looked online for how to soften hard clay and only found complicated tutorials..is it really as easy as adding baby oil or Vaseline!!! Ugh and I've been struggling with throwing it away and now I don't have to! Yayyy
Put a sheet of plastic between the book and the oily clay. Otherwise the oil may seep through the paper and into the paper of the book's cover. Thanks for a great vid.
I'd like to add some tips. The pasta machine gets really dirty and leaves streaks. You can disassemble the machine to the bare minimum of just the rollers and crank, which will allow for easier cleaning and still works for rolling clay. For cleaning, take some paper towels and douse them with enough olive oil to make them very moist, but not drippy. Then run them through the machine at a snug thickness to clean the rollers. Furthermore, polymer clay is PVC, which despite the claims of being non-toxic, is toxic and hormone-inhibiting. BAD. You can't simply wash your hands with soap and water after working the clay. Baby wipes don't cut it, either. You need oil to remove it. I prefer olive oil, because baby oil is a petroleum product, and that's gross. You can make your own wipes using paper towels and a plastic tub: First, get a tupperware or re-use a baby wipes tub. Prepare the paper towels. Fold them so that they will stack into the tub. In a large bowl, add 1/2 cup olive oil, several drops of essential oil for scent (I like lavender) and 1 cup or so of distilled water. Whisk or stir vigorously until the mixture is well-blended, then IMMEDIATELY pour over the paper towels in the tub, so that they soak up the mixture before the water and oil separates. If you need more liquid, mix some more oil and water separately and them pour over. You can use these to clean your hands after working with clay. Afterward, use soap and water to wash your hands, or simply dry with a towel for nice, moisturized hands.
Kim beadyeyedbrat Kennedy Alcohol dries hands and if you're claying full time or have dry skin this can lead to cracks or bleeding. Oil keeps hands soft and claying without pain.
Hey, I’ve been a fan for a while but I’ve never been this long of a fan. It’s amazing how far you’ve came. If you see this comment just now and look at your video look at how far you’ve came how great you work is.😅😊
You shouldn't leech your polyclay. Try chilling, or mixing with either a harder clay or what I do is crush my scraps from carving/shaving cured pieces. Also don't forget to rinse off if you use nail polish remover. You don't want it to eat your clay.
I already knew the one about dealing with soft clay but the one to deal with hard and crumbly clay was new to me and might come in helpful as i bought a bunch of clay a couple years ago and never used it. I tried using some from an open pack back in february and it was really hard and crumbly but after i just worked it a bit it held together and was fine to work with. That rubbing alcohol/nail polish remover trick will come in handy too.
another awesome way to make dry clay soft and supple again is to use some goopy to soft clay.. crumble it up.. take some to soft gooy clay and roll it out.. then. put crumbled up dry clay on the goopy clay you have rolled out.. and then fold it all up inside and work it.. after its worked in.. take some more crumbly clay and put it in the clay you are working and keep doing it till the clay is all the consistency you want
About the leeching of soft clays... Premo clay is much much better(not as soft and MUCH more durable after being baked) than sculpyIII which I think you've said you use quite a lot. If you haven't tried it, do! It's so much easier to work with and your items won't break like sculpyIII does. That would be my one hack/tip for other crafters:)
Thank you so much! I have some hard clay, it was on sale at Michaels and in my joy didn't check them first. I was using TLS to soften it as I saw in some videos but it ends up really sticky, I'm going to try the baby oil today :) I have myalgia so kneading the clay for so long made it hard for me to make anything. So happy! :D
I am very new to polymer clay as in super new I haven't made anything yet! I do work in Metal Clay so I thank you for these hacks....I know they'll come in handy!
Baking on waxed paper can be problematic, because the wax will melt and get on the back of your piece. You can prevent burning by getting a super cheap-o tile from the hardware store to bake on. Put a piece of white paper between it and your piece if you don't want shiny spots on the back. And yes, tent a piece of foil over the top, that works well. If you get a big can of varathane, it will last a lot longer if you transfer a small amount into a smaller container to work out of, and leave the big can closed and stored away most of the time.
WOW, Yes I brought many a clay back from dead with baby oil. I never thought of trying to dry out clay to make it harder. Thank you for the tips. My hack is to spend the money for the small Clay oven. Yeah it seems like a lot of money for what basicly a toaster oven. but unlike a toaster over it doesn't toast you clay :) Keep posting !
Can you help me?? I use a little conventional oven, I heard its not good to cook my projects in my oven. My creations come out not being very strong and If I wanted to I could break it easy? Is this normal, please any advice would help. Thank you
Awesome, I didn't know that about the varnish! Thank you! :D also another tip, that's a bit quicker, for fixing clay that is too soft! Massage in a little corn starch powder and it's harder in seconds! 👍
Great tips thenks Jackie. You're a great guru. I've been out of action for awhile with a sick daughter and brand new grand son but I'm ready to get back in to my clay work soon. I can't wait to see what you do next.
NerdECrafter Thanks Jackie. Me too. I have to make something for my new little grandson Vincent. He's just love on legs!!!! I'll show you the project when it's done. xoxo
OMG, where was this video 30 minutes ago (hahaha)...I just used white polymer clay for the first time (I usually use black or other dark colors) and the white was a nightmare to work with. I wish I would've known about using the rubbing alcohol trick sooner. I was trying to pick all the fuzz, flecks, and other bits of other clay off the white, as everything seemed to show up. I will use your trick next time. I also really love the baby oil trick to recondition dry clay. THANKS A BUNCH FOR THESE TIPS!
ahh finally a tip that helped the cleaning the clays, cuz the red clay rubs on hands really bad, oooh ty Nerdcrafter using it with nail polish remover, alcohol.
Ah, thank you! I picked up a pack of Fimo Soft clay, it was awfully stretchy and floppy after I started working with it for a while, I'll definitely use one of your hacks to firm it up a bit :).
I just wanted to share this; if you by any chance don't have rubbing alcohol or any thing I found out that you can put a little hand sanitizer on a q tip and it works the same for cleaning off dust particles
you can also use cards if you can't afford a pasta machine. take the desired thickness and put 2 stacks of cards one on each side of the clay and roll out the clay. the cards will keep the clay at the thickness you wanted. its cheaper then the machine.

Polymer is usually baked at 180 Celcius but yeah! Thank you for sharing that coz yikes!
@@Rikeilan ah, i should have specified i meant fahrenheit, haha 😅. polymer clay is cooked around 275F, whereas wax paper starts to melt around 200F
@@IsisNiko Ohhhh! Yeah that makes sense! That is really good to know, thank you!
So i have to use just aluminum foil?
@@howth_ you could use aluminum foil OR parchment paper. just no wax paper, as it will burn. i personally prefer to use parchment paper, myself

How do you use the eyeshadow? Knead it into the clay? Dust the outside before baking? I'm new and curious lol
GIRL! Thank you thank you thank you! I am just getting started with polymer clay and this was SO helpful, especially about the sealant! :D

Would you be better to use a few sheets of paper? I think that the point of the paper was to absorb moisture. Plastic would stop this happening.??

I've worked witb polymer clay for about a year. These are great tips!
I'm new to using polymer clay and I found this tutorial very helpful, I've even saved it in my RUclips favourites list.
yay!
Thank you Jackie!! It helped me a lot for a clay that was dry and crumbly!!
The tip of using baby oil or Vaseline on crumbling clay is great, I’ll definitely try that.
Thank you for this, I am just starting out with polymer clay and this helps me loads!

Well I for one, did not any of this so, thanks! Now I know how to prevent my clay from getting burned!
this is a great video and very helpful!! I didn't know about the nail polish one xD
***** Pleasure =D
Hi lizhu :D
I think she said nail polish REMOVER, aka acetone. It is a good solvent that affects many polymers and plastics. Works well for what she suggests.
ahh finally a tip that helped the cleaning the clays, cuz the red clay rubs on hands really bad, oooh ty Nerdcrafter using it with nail polish remover, alcohol.
Ah, thank you! I picked up a pack of Fimo Soft clay, it was awfully stretchy and floppy after I started working with it for a while, I'll definitely use one of your hacks to firm it up a bit :).
Thank you sooo much!My clay that i bought a few weeks ago is soo hard and crumbly! And now i know what to do!:D
I just wanted to share this; if you by any chance don't have rubbing alcohol or any thing I found out that you can put a little hand sanitizer on a q tip and it works the same for cleaning off dust particles
Oh thank you so much, I just got a bunch of this new polymer clay and it's been super difficult to work with

Hey Jackie, idk if you'll see this but I'm writing an essay on Polymer clay and I'm using this as a source for my paper! (Professor approved!)
For softening clay, you can also use liquid sculpey.
I learned some new tricks to my p clay issues! Thank you for sharing 🤩
