Very sad day for snooker. Ray was my favorite player. He will be sadly missed. Ray was world number one when this tournament was played. He beat Steve Davis in the Semi-Finals. I missed this tournament and never got to see it after. Many thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of history
A true legend of snooker and a master tactician ànd one thing we tend to forget that he was a brilliant Potter as well .A very sad day RIP ❤😢😢and thanks for the memories Ray ..
Omg I didn’t even know Ray passed away he was a great champion always gracious in defeat and a wonderful ambassador for the game of Snooker. Rest in Peace Ray 🌹🙏🌹
Whoever put this up thank you. RIP to a colossus of Snooker. The great Ray Reardon. Grew up with Ray as a great player and not too proud to admit I’ve shed a tear watching this. Jimmy played his part too they had some great matches. A rivalry that’s rarely mentioned. RIP Ray.
I remember seeing this match and saw ray in the bh final against thorburn. Ray was at the bottom of the stairs waiting to be called out and he smiled at me. I was only a young teen. Never forgot it. Rip sir reardon.
Ray should have beaten Thorburn to become 83 Masters Champion. He was on fire at the end. That and his three major wins that season made him favourite for the 83 world championship and world no1. In the event he was very unlucky to lose narrowly 12-13 to Tony Knowles.
I must share this Ray Reardon story. I watched all his matches at the Pontins Professional and pro-am in I think 1982. He had been drawn on a public table upstairs and asked the referee for an extended spider. ‘ we dont have one ‘ said the referee. Ray said ‘ you will have to get me one as I am not playing the shot without it’. Someone was sent downstairs to the pro tables, took them 10 mins to come back with the extended spider. The first thing Ray said was ‘ I don’t think I will use it now’. Everyone laughed. Of course he did use it. I think he played John Parrot later and had to give him 30 points start, and got to the final of the pro tournament . My favourite player, and so approachable in the bar in the evening.
That's a really thoughtful observation. Nice one mate. He was lovely but imagine playing him lol. He was fucking terryfying and i think that would have pleased him. Bugger knew he'd won most of his matches before he even arrived lol
Among the tributes I read was a story about him making a century 8 months ago at 91 years old, what a great life he lived, first class snooker legend, RIP
Thanks Ray, you were an amazing player, and even more an amazing person. So funny at times, but also so very generous and kind to all the other players.
After losing the final of the ‘82 to Higgins, Reardon’s game suddenly came to brilliant life. He defeated White in four tournaments during the ‘82-‘83 season, the PPT, the UK, the Masters, and here at the Yamaha. He was one of the favourites going into the Crucible, but his father died just before the championship began, and it affected him badly. Despite making immaculate back to back centuries, he lost in the deciding frame to Tony Knowles in the last 16. Reardon, Knowles, and Stevens, any of them would have made a better fist of things than the exhausted Thorburn against Davis in the final. One of the greatest men of our game.
@@stuartwilliams-fw4vo yes, agree with you on that. Personally, I think Ray would have won against Davis in that 1983 final had he made it that far. He was playing so well, that many, including Clive Everton and Ted low, believed he would win it. His father's passing would not have helped. Not only did Ray win this tournament but he claimed the professional players again beating Jimmy White, and the Welsh professional titles that season. Made the finals of both Irish and British masters, the world team championship with Griffiths and Mountjoy, the finals of pot black and made the finals of the pontins professional as well. A great world number one was Ray in 1982 1983 season. He will be sadly missed for sure
Great post. I’ve often wondered how far Ray would’ve gone in that ‘83 Championship had he won the deciding frame against Knowles? At the age of 50 that was really his last real chance at the title. Although he reached the ‘85 semi-final he was never going to beat Davis over 31-frames.
Sad day ...Ray was and always will be a giant in the snooker world ,aswell as being a perfect ambassador and true gentleman for the sport...rest in peace 'legend' ...You will be missed😢 x
I've only recently rediscovered my love for watching snooker after watching pop black when I was a little boy. Such a wonderful game now spanning the globe and bringing people together when so much of the world is pulling apart. RIP Ray, You were an integral part of something special.
The last time Ray held a trophy aloft. Surprising in a way as his game was coming together again. Sadly time catches up with everyone no matter how good. It's inevitable. A legend on the baize and an unforgettable character. RIP Ray Reardon MBE 🏴
Two great legends of the the game, wont be the same without Ray who gave us so many great matches and laughter, now we know why he came out playing at night to play his best , R.I.P Dracula!
Ray Reardon was like a Praying Mantis over the Snooker Table the best ever at both laying a Snooker and getting out of one RIP Ray and thanks for the years of entertainment
I think I'm right in saying that this tournament occupied the place in the snooker season that ended up being the British Open, but it was a non ranking tournament at this stage. That itv theme music brings back some memories lol!, not particularly happy ones but it does bring them
Somewhere just out of sight, around about now, the distinctive sniffle of a certain Northern Irishman can be heard, and a brisk knock on the door. 'Ray? Ray, it's Hurricane!' 'Ah here we go, what in god's name does he want now?', the Count thinks to himself; eventually, he readies himself for the worst. 'What is it Alex?' 'Well', says the diminutive genius, 'I just thought I ought to pop by to say hello, and well played - oh, and I've brought Spenny with me, and Steady Eddie, and Pulman, and Fred...and the Brummie's come along for good measure---' 'Oh for Pete's sake, who invited Graham?!' '---don't worry babes, I've made him promise to shut up from time to time! Anyway, everyone's here to see you, and we've got a little surprise for you that we reckon you'll rather like. Oh, and some Welsh old boy, he's not dressed to impress but he says you'll know him when you see---' 'Cliff?' 'No, Ray. It's not Cliff.' 'Douglas?!' 'No!' shouts Mr Mountjoy from the back row, 'not unless there's two of us!' Alex glances at the old man; the old man smiles back. There's a certain glint in his eye when their gazes meet - there's a steeliness about him, too. And there's elegance, such elegance. 'Well, in you come then!' says Ray. 'Okie-doke', whispers Alex. (I’m a relatively recent newcomer so be patient) I’m used to “foul and a miss” when the cue ball doesn’t touch a red, and the opponent has the option to make them try again. I noticed this didn’t happen, they only did the foul and the four points. Is this something that has changed between then and now
They started changing the miss rule around the early 90s. As you've mentioned here, in the old days 99% of the time a foul would be a foul and nothing more, no balls replaced etc, although the refs did have the discretion to replace the balls if they felt it wasn't a genuine effort to hit the balls. Nowadays a miss is called again and again virtually until they hit the ball. Once again though the refs have the discretion to not call a miss if they feel it was a genuine effort to hit the ball, but they rarely apply this. They just keep calling miss over and over even if 40/50 points are given away.
