Really helpful to hear your opinion in the "other" part of farming. So important to understand that we need to be able to make a profit to be able to be successful farmers. If you are not making money, it is just a hobby which costs you money. Regenerative farms that bring in a fair living is the future of agriculture globally.
This is so true. I've found that most small ranchers and farmers need a ton of help with the other 1/2 of ranching; the Marketing/Selling! Best of luck in the motherland with the family!
Saving money is a huge part of making it. This is a food and farming movement and I am grateful for you paving the way and helping the rest of us catch up.
And this is one of the many reasons I just adore you as a mentor and your operation. Your humility and passion for doing what is right, while understanding that folks need to make a profit to make a living to keep doing the right thing. Of all the people out there that I admire and want to emulate in this realm of regenerative farming, you and Jan are by far my favorite. You have a teacher's heart, and share freely your wisdom and passion with all of us out there reaching for the same goals. You're a God send...I truly mean that. And I'm sure that brings blessing back on you and yours.
Greg, great observations about knowing your costs and building a compelling marketing story via a website. What do you do to help the customers "find" you? Facebook? Craigslist? How does a customer order from you? Emailed agreement to buy whole/half cow processed by a contract(?) processor or website order form? Can a farmer sell cuts to consumers in MO? If so, how marketed? Do you have a farm-located store? Do you have wholesale sales to vendors at population center farmers markets (I haven't heard you mention that you actually are a vendor at a farmer's market(s))? Do you sell to restaurants? If so, how (processed "commercial" cuts or "consumer" cuts)? This info would be helpful for those of us thinking about getting into raising livestock.
Hey John, let me know if you'd like any help with traditional or digital marketing around your regenerative properties. I'm an experienced Senior Digital Marketer who left the sports industry to go whole-hog on Regenerative Agriculture and Holistic Management. 📚 I'm currently training at the Savory Institute to become an accredited Associate Educator, so not only do I have the passion and skills to tell your story and sell your product, but I'll also have an unmatched understanding of how profitable ranches operate, helping convey the depth and expertise of your hard work.
Best advice I ever got from my father was ( the more you put into something the more you have to get out of it). You make money with the animals not the barn and machinery!
Yes sir. There's a lot of bad "cash flow" money education from corporate America that made its way into agriculture. Most of it doesn't have a place in a holistic system like proper regen-ag. Hoping more people look into Holistic Management from the Savory Insitute, or check out Ranching for Profit! Hope alls well with you John!
Thanks for saying the hard things and not just the easy. Especially for those of us who want to graze in a foreign country, even more food for thought (and prolly in another language and set of laws to boot). Pitfalls are common and most dangerous ✌️
I think happy free animals in the right space benefit from the land at least as much as the land does. You the steward benefit 10 fold. The land is the source and the sink. People are attracted to that Greg.
People are always attracted to honest to goodness truth. And the real truth, like you mentioned, is that the healing isn't really just the land and animals, it's within ourselves. Hope all is well #peace
Gremlins got your gimbal? Thx for the good advice & you've got me making a draft of that brilliant website for supplying resilient grazing. 3 Cow might help too.
I don't think I could ever find private buyers, the cattle are so thick out this way. I intend to try, one of these years, once I produce more than 8 calves in a year.
@@NS-pf2zc Yeah, great point here in diversifying if you're in a saturated market. I don't have enough land for cows (yet!), so I'm about to embark on the sheep path.
Its looking like hard times may be coming to America, maybe food shortages. Probably a good time to be a provider of food. Especially if you don't have to buy the grain.
Good morning Mr.Judy! Thanks for the lesson. btw to everyone. Please note the "Phishing" comments. Do not. Do not drill down on those. Lately they are all over YT.

I’m working on offering grass fed lamb to people just bought some grass fed ewe lambs that should have lambs if bred right raise grass fed lambs. I can’t wait

The costs are astronomical because your local laws need to be changed. Right now those laws are benefiting the large meat conglomerates. Pressure your gov to allow local abattoirs to open.
Let me know if you need some help getting it to "fly off the shelves"! Digital marketer with Direct-to-Consumer history, studying Regen-Ag and Holistic Management!

Great advice Greg. Thanks for giving back. We all benefit from your own life lessons.

That story about the vegetarian is what it's ALL about. SO many people need healing, and they know it.

Sheep may be the way to go then. I don't love them like I love cattle, but they are pretty profitable.

A thousand pound cow can be dangerous I’ve had a hoof go by my head a time or two but that was when I got my first heifer

Do you sell any beef through a farm store/farmer’s market or online shop?
We direct market our animals.
Mr. Judy, what publications do you take in print form? I've been getting Stockman-GrassFarmer for decades but I'm wondering what else is out there?
@Steve Slade thank you!

Local beef is huge money up here Massachusetts. Processing cost are astronomical and you can't get your animals in.
Gotta make slaughter dates before your animals are born these days.
One of my neighbors doesn't sell his beef for less than $10 a pound unless it's to folks from our town.
We have a big need for processors here too, but they are popping up all around. Will take time for there to be enough to meet the demands.
