The great advantage of the Internet and RUclips is that we can see places from the distance, places difficult to reach and visit.
For instance I'm now watching Nuuk from my warm Sicilian bedroom.

Yannick Lampron, Nuuk is about 3 times the size of Iqaluit, and has for years actively worked to promote itself as a sort of transnational capital for arctic peoples, plus the annual block grant from Denmark, and you end up with a city like Nuuk.

This is a nice summer video of my home town. I didn’t film this, but I’m on these roads in my car on a daily basis. Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland with a population of 18000 people. Total population of Greenland is 56000. As I’m writing this it’s February with plenty of snow and temperatures around minus 10 to minus 15 Celsius. Nuuk is the Greenlandic word for peninsula, and the city is actually on a small peninsula.

Went to Greenland 3 months ago, have been wanting to go for years, and mainly because no one goes there. I like the unknown, the unpopular. However, it is a very difficult place to get to, can only fly from airports in Iceland, or Copenhagen. It is quite expensive. Traveling to other towns requires either a propeller plane or ferry boat. Infrastructure is quite archaic. Finding Wifi is near impossible. Ilulissat is the main tourist town, blessed with the acclaimed icefjord where one can take a boat tour of the icebergs and see whales feeding. Beyond that. . . I agreed with several other tourists that Nuuk, Sisimiut and other towns are forgettable. I read a few articles how Greenland has had the highest suicide rate for decades. Was lucky to have a candid conversation with a Nuuk local. When asked why, she nonchalantly replied it is due to the rampant incest in the smaller towns. . . After picking my jaw off the floor, I eventually made my way back to my life in the States. I feel enriched with experience and knowledge, but will never go back.

Thank you for sharing. All you have writing is quite true. I think it's the common troubles indigenous people go through, even in this day and age. Our big problem is that the government, and people in general, are turning the blind eye. "Hear no evil.." It's so covered in taboo all of it, it's really sad.

Thanks for facilitating my virtual visit to Nuuk. I've always been fascinated by Kalaallit Nunaat, otherwise called Greenland. I've read that that a third of the population of ~56k live in Nuuk. Observations from this driving tour: speedbumps are needed even in Greenland, no painted lines demarcating the pedestrian/cyclist paths from the roads, many normal cars instead of 4x4s, crash barriers with winter dents, quasi urban-desolate tundra environment. I like what I saw. Maybe some day I'll visit, via Iceland first. Now I'll take your virtual winter drive. :-)

It's on the tundra. The ground is permanently frozen not to far below so it doesn't have the room for the roots of trees to grow.
