Interesting fact: "Faubourg" meant "banlieue" -- suburb -- and denoted the old boundary of Paris before Haussman redesigned the city. So when you're walking a street named "Faubourg" it was most likely the location of the old fortress wall surrounding Paris.
The hostel I stayed in the first time I visited Paris is right next to Square Amadou-Hampaté Bâ. It might not be the most picturesque but I like that little maze of a park lol and was excited to see it in your vid!
All glad to see you back, but remember self-care! Don’t pressure yourself! That said, thank you for keeping our spirits up during this time with Paris-nostalgia (for those who miss it)!🇫🇷
Well that was an unexpected bonus. Stalingrad is now my nearest Metro station & I walked down that stretch of Rue du Faubourg St Martin on Sunday as well, even took my own photo of the boarded-up building. The 10th & 19th aren't classically attractive arrondissements but they have some interesting spots.
The Hospital and Convent you mention, as well as anything else medical or religious order to help the poor built not in the 1st to 4th were constructed outside of Paris at that time to keep the sick away from the rest of society(even then someone figured out you should not mix the sick with those not yet sick - a mask of sorts). It was farmlands exterior of the mentioned arrondissements that were walled(running where there is now the continuation of boulevards from Bastille around with the 4th and the 2nd with entrances at the various gates "portes"). That is why there are those monumental Roman like archers at Porte St. Martin & St. Denis. You might have noted the name change of "Rue" to "Faubourg" anytime a street continues out of the original four arrondissement, this was simple because they had become thoroughfares outside the city walls often quite dangerous after sunset.
Very nice! I miss that area a lot. I used to go to Le Petit Cambodge very frequently. The street art is great around there, too. I’m hoping that things there recovered from 2015. (2020 stuff notwithstanding, I guess. Whew.) Many of the restaurant injuries and deaths from the attack were in that area, including Le Petit Cambodge.
So far, i found this part of town as the less attractieve Quartier in terms of architecture! Building in a decay state, no ornaments etc.... But nice to see other areas of Paris. great job anyway
We've been in lockdown for so long here in Melbourne, i dont know any different. No restaurants/bars/shops/hairdressers the list goes on. Stay safe Jay
Welcome back. Love the 80 in 8, great mix of pure stroll and quick recap of notable landmarks, and of course where to coffee! FYI, I find the quick google map shot of the boundaries helpful.
Another interesting observation: The language drift over the last 25 years has resulted in the use of "OK" being more common vs "d'accord" (because "OK" sounds like "hoquet" hiccup), and "takeaway" vs "à emporter". Sushi and Mexican food were almost non-existant 25 years ago in Paris. As an expat Californian at the time I was HURTIN'.
Cool to see you back in full steam production, Jay. BTW, we have a canal like this here in Panama, much bigger of course, but is only 100 years old. So Canal St Martin is double its age. Amazing.
The street “art” does not entice me to spend time in that quarter, but thank you for the other aspects of your tour today. Looking forward to the next one.
Hey Jay, did you get to (but chose not to include) the hidden park at the center of Hopital Saint-Louis? It's a nice quiet garden we finally got to last trip and I really thought you were going there in this video.
@@JaySwanson - got it. we asked the guard at the east gate since Paris Parks maintains it and he directed us in so if you're curious what it's like I took and posted raw video on our walk through the 10th and St-Louis park starts here: ruclips.net/video/N62yFqzHXTM/видео.html
@@JaySwanson - also, no apologizes needed. I found doing a video journal of the 10 days we were there in August EXHAUSTING! Your stamina is amazing. I share because I love that you share! The Jay Abides!
Jay, any canal in the 'old world' was built for a purpose. Be that transport, diverting water be that as a means to clean the streets, or drinking. That mindset had to evolve over time, each era had to overcome problems inherently to changing times. It's not like 'we' have whole lot of land to play around with.
hey bro love your show you seem like a really awsome cool dude!!! can you talk about if you traveled your experiences with the girls from different countries you been to how do they look their attitude do they speak english and are they easy to bang also what races do good in what countries and how travel improves your sexual market value and helps you get laid also some fun things you did and fun places you recommend and what is the best way to meet lots of girls and get laid while traveling on your next video thanks keep up the good work!!! :)

I (and I suspect most viewers) had no trouble understanding Jay's speech when he spoke of the robbery. However I often make use of the speed setting to adjust various RUclipsrs' rate of speech; some are too slow, some too fast. I expect that it's for this very reason that YT offers this feature.
Inspite of the major setback with the theft of you laptop you have not missed a beat. Awesome to see you back in the saddle!
Love your music choices, Jay. Your French is so good. I’m envious. 😆🤩
Thank you!🍻
My first time as patron producer. Awesome. Thanks Jay for the mention.
Made it!
7:05 I love the Wallace fountains... I don't know why, but they are one of my favorite things in Paris.
Always wanted to explore St Martin more. Nice 🙏😍

Why not do a series just devoted to Paris night life, jazz, theater, opera--all of the different ways to enjoy an evening in Paris?

Wonderful vlogs. Wish the deaf community could enjoy it.

Glad you’re back at it, Jay.
“Piétonized” ! Love your Franglais ! (and the whole idea of closing off a street just for pedestrians)
