  • George Best - Top 50 goals
    Controversial, fast and deadly. George Best was an athlete with unquestionable talent on the pitch, one of the greatest in the history of Manchester United and his generation.
    So much so that, in 1968, he received the Golden Ball award, as the best player in Europe. However, his life was also surrounded by controversy both inside and outside the lawns. If outside he liked to enjoy with a lot of drink and women, on the field he was an explosive and temperamental athlete.

    Playing football on snow or ice or on a ploughed field, George Best made scoring great goals look easy. That is the measure of a genius who possessed such remarkable skills that other players around him could only envy and admire.

    My first ever game i went to was in 1967 at the Hawthorns, my elder sister took me, she was Beatles and George Best mad, and when you see him not yards away from you it makes you realise just how good he was, he put bums on seats and rightly so.

    I grew up watching the United team of the 60s and, imho, George Best is THE best player I have ever seen. Genius is an overused word but he had it in spades.

    I once worked with a man from Belfast who lived two doors down from George in Burren Way Cregagh. I asked him how good George was when he sas young. He told me that all the local lads from 10-15 used to play, and that when Bestie was 10 or 11 he could keep the ball off them for a solid 5 minutes. They then got frustrated and kicked lumps out of him. His talent was God given.

    Just looked so fantastic on the ball, great header, great dribbler, great ball control, great finisher, left and right feet, great flair and imagination. Simply the best.

    You also have to take into account the fact that you could not do the things footballers can do today with the balls back in those days. They were much heavier, especially in the rain where they tend to soak in the moisture.

    • @jerryoshea3116
      @jerryoshea3116 3 года назад +7

      Hallelujah!! Without getting to excited, but I keep on raising this point..Since maybe 1995 the ball has been getting lighter and I won't even mention the Physicality difference!(probably due to the material being used to produce it)and this is why we see the ball flying in from crazy angles, and Gk being able to "Punt"the ball nearly clear out of the Stadium.
      But many of the lets call them "Contemporary fans"seem to think it's because the quality of today's players are far better than the likes of Pele,Georgie Best,,Law,Charlton,Johan Cruyff,Maradona,Socrates,Zico,Ruud Gullit,Van Bastin,Roberto Baggio and so on..And my answer is a emphatic"No F##king way"..The ball is just to light, making a joke of the game.

    Great player . . . before the pressures of stardom and alcoholism blunted his edge. I saw him play for Fulham a few times in the late 1970s in the old Second Division - he was still a class above the rest.
    Shame you didn't include two other goals from George Best's career - the one which didn't count for Northern Ireland versus England in 1970 in the old Home Championship when he cheekily kicked the ball from Gordon Banks' hands and headed in the ball (probably a perfectly good goal) - and the goal against Sheffield United (?) from I think 1971/72 when he beat three men to the right of the penalty area and the ball went in off the left-hand post and into the right-hand corner of the goal. One of his 'best' !

      George would've graced any era of football. When you look at the muddy pitches and defenders trying to take him out, imagine him on a modern pristine pitch with protection from a modern ref. George would've been on £500k a week or it's equivalent in bottles of champagne. He was a one off.

    I love how he mostly just gets on with his job after scoring a goal, like it's nothing special.
    There's no stupid Fortnite dances or performing for the camera. Just takes a breather and heads back to his half 😄
    Although there's a couple of clips where he jumps and fists the air out of pure adulation and raw emotion, but no staged or trademark celebration like CR7, the Shearer raised hand or Robbie Keanes roll and guns.
    I wonder when celebrations became such a staple in the game.
