If the imminent threat of an Chinese invasion of Taiwan is not enough to make TSMC relocate their production lines, then a Felon Trump tariff won't even cause them to blink. Besides, the tariffs will only cause Americans pain and hamper their effort in AI development. Just another stupid move by Felon Trump.

@qorso it's not just that there aren't in fact any fabs (yet), there's also no supply chains. And as to labour, yes it's more expensive, obv, but that isn't even the biggest problem... Fabs aren't making pressed metal sheets. You can't just magically train someone up to run a fab in a week. It'll take an enormous effort to get that expertise and to run them efficiently. It's literally a decades long process...

  • @michaelkeudel8770

Putting the cart before the horse yet again, if you want a domestic chip supply, you build it first, not after electronics have been tariffed for the next 4 to 5 years it takes to build a fab, and this also increases the cost to build the fab since all those electronics will ALSO get tariffed. The reason for tariffs is to even out competition so that no one DUMPS product into your market to eliminate the competition, we the American people are paying these price increases. That's is exactly what the CHIPS act was designed to do, and there's already over $1.5 Trillion dollars worth of projects started under Biden, not Trump, they will be built quickly if you ignore the 4 years they were already planned and construction has started, years ago. Every single semi tool in a fab is built on order, these machines don't sit on a shelf with a buy now button next to it that can be picked off a shelf. I work in the semi tool industry, I know how long it takes to build the equipment inside a fab.

From the technical perspective of modern high-tech, manufacturing is more complex than designing.
iPhones and AI servers are made in Taiwan, from chips to shells. In the short term, Taiwan should and can build more advanced companies than iPhones and Nvidia.
Taiwan should abandon the OEM industry, which does not compete with customers.
Taiwan must go its own way and should not continue to be pro-American.
Taiwan should not cultivate Nvidia, iPhone, and AMD for the United States to strengthen the United States and ultimately hurt itself.
High IQs and hard-working engineers are the keys to high-tech success, and the United States lacks both.

You must understand that the domestic U.S. market alone cannot sustain American corporations. These companies rely on the global market, and if they lose it, the U.S. stock market will collapse. Moreover, many of America’s social welfare programs are heavily dependent on the stock market.
