I rarely agree with you Destin, but the people you're talking to on this panel don't seem to understand that you're specifically talking about console sales numbers and the viability, from a business perspective, whether Microsoft should keep making consoles. No one else seems to understands it. The business people will drop financing consoles, because they will make more money publishing all the Xbox titles on PS5. If the Xbox Next sells worse than Series X|S they will drop it! It doesn't make financial sense to keep throwing money at a sinking ship.

My PC is my Console.... the only thing I'm in the market for is a handheld. To be honest many ppl that have good PC's, like my self, feel the same. So this is an interesting conundrum indeed.
@@chrispatsox that's for cloud. Cloud won't be good enough to be flawless for another at LEAST 15-20 years.. and even then they may not have enough servers. Until you can play instantly with no wait time, it'll never replace consoles for most people. I know when I want to play my game, I am not willing to wait for sh**. 30 million units sold right now with Xbox series X and S sold Probably sounds very accurate because the last report of 27.7 million units was back in February. It is pretty much on par with the Xbox 360 on the same time frame and let's just be honest Microsoft is not going to stop selling Hardware and I wouldn't be surprised if the handheld console was one such device. I'm already sold if the next Xbox console can play Steam games on the console if the next-gen console can play Steam games from the comfort of your living room.

I don't think they Will get out of the console business. You're ignoring the fact that their BIGGEST install base for gamepass is the Console. The console market is not growing is remaining flat Gen over Gen. Why are we still talking about growth in the console market. Xbox is looking to grow active users in the gaming market. I am not saying they don't care about the console in saying they're diversifying their offerings. And I'll repeat their BIGGEST install base is on the Console.

This isn't the PS3 generation where Sony lost money almost the whole generation, both the PS4 and PS5 have been profitable within about 3 years and VERY profitable from year 5 onwards.
PSX takes a small loss on each unit sold. At no point this cycle have they made a profit on the console transaction itself. And yes, their margins are weak because of that fact. Much, much weaker than Xbox's in fact.
Gen 10 isn't just a handheld for Xbox. Two consoles are releasing, a main desktop console, premium, aimed at the Xbox enthusiast (hence the talk of it being the biggest gen leap ever in a console, so it will likely be pricey so aimed at the gaming/Xbox enthusiast). And a cheaper handheld for the curious, casual, gamepass gamer who may prefer Nintendo or ps etc

For years before ms Xbox put games on pc the pc player base was tuning in to all the Xbox ps and Nintendo events and getting involved in all the console wars/dramas because it's a fun scene and had been for decades. Ain't no one tuned on to E3 pc events 😂. The excitement when a new console is being revealed, even pc gamers get involved in the drama. Consoles are a fun great place to game, as is the pc scene. It's not just about power, it's about the coming together of gaming communities, and even the pc base spends more time in the console scene than the pc scene.

In my country you got to order the series X if you want it, the stores don't carry them anymore. they are full of PS5s and Switches though. When I tried to get a series X the clerk asked me: "Are you sure you want an Xbox, we got the PS5 right now." That should help you, when you try to foresee the future. I'm in Sweden.
If they simply made first party games available on gamepass 12 months after launch they would make a lot more money and have better sales data for future products. Gamepass is killing xbox and their studio's.

If Xbox strategy was the same as playstations then yes consoles sales would be just as important. But it isn't anymore, Xbox consoles will be a store front to show off what you can get on the Xbox platform. Now there's actually less pressure for Xbox to sell consoles as a reason to keep making them.
Xbox knows that if they get out of the hardware market, they lose a significant number of their Game Pass subscribers. If they stop making consoles, I’m done paying for GP. It’s that simple. I’m not paying $2500-$4000 for a PC every couple years. I guarantee people in my place make up the vast majority of GP subscribers. If GP is their strategy, which it obviously is, they have to keep producing consoles to keep people in GP. It’s really that simple.
Which is the issue they face. If console sales keep going bad then how can they sell Game Pass? Will PC gamers get all into Game Pass? They are already giving the PC better prices because they know is harder to make them interested. Will Playstation or Nintendo accept putting Game Pass on their console?

While console-exclusives in general should help hardware sales, Microsoft has really shot themselves in both feet by chasing an 'Xbox everywhere' approach - if gamers can play there favourite games anywhere, what reason is there for them to pick Xbox over another console that still has 1st party exclusives?
If they could get their Game Pass on Playstation and Nintendo systems etc then it wouldn't matter because they will cannibalise those systems. I mean what use will Sony get by everyone having Playstation if everyone has Playstation and Game Pass with it. The problem for Microsoft is that Nintendo and Playstation will never put it on their consoles because it will compete with their services. So it makes me wonder if Microsoft has plans to let Steam be on Xbox etc and open Xbox to other game services just so it can later sue Playstation and Nintendo for monopolistic tactics by saying "see our console is open" and try to force them to accept Game Pass.

I'm not sure it's worth bringing up this debate constantly... Seems pretty clear MS is in a bad spot. They need a console to sell gamepass but continuing to try sell consoles like this is a bad idea. Technically they could exit hardware and bring Gamepass to PS5 like Ubisoft+ or EA Play but then they have to share earnings with Sony. Or they could license hardware as is the plan according to a number of rumors. If all that fails... I don't think anyone can predict what MS will do. It's a huge mess because they've essentially handed their future over to competing platforms now. The only thing everyone seems to agree on is Xbox is making money. So the brand isn't likely to disappear in of itself. But the way people currently engage with the brand? Yes. That is *very* likely to change in the coming years

500 Million active monthly users = 5Billion revenue, Playstation had 116m and generated 6 Billion? So you do the math Destin on which one is generating more with less. And it shows Microsofts numbers are not making sense in how they measure an active user. They count anyone who logs into XBox app. Sony counts people logged into PSN, and the majority they put up number wise are people with consoles.. Meaning more people who actually spend money.
@@TavishHill 21Billion was Microsoft revenue not from xbox division. There is a break down in their Fiscal report. I suggest you read it as I think you are confusing a total quarter revenue number for entire company to what is generated by a division in that said company.

That MPC division brought in $15.9bil for the quarter and $62bil for the FY. MS Corp's rev was $245bil for the FY and the 4th quarter was $64.7bil.

I think that they'll have a lot of success if in the next generation they develop a steam deck-like handheld that operates on Windows but can also boot into a virtual machine that runs an Xbox console mode. What the hell happened to Halo as a major or THE major Xbox game / Master Chief mascot? And I don't mean free multi-player I mean the single player campaign experience. Infinite was awesome and even ended on sort of a cliffhanger and then nothing. Xbox currently has no real branding right now.
Microsoft is a software and services business, and hardware is a means to get people to use its software and services. So I dont think they will stop supporting consoles, but they are seemingly more focused on the bigger, more revenue generating markets of PC and Mobile. For me, it's a case of 'how' are they going to support console in the future vs. 'will they' support consoles. But I do think they are missing a trick by not locking games exclusive wise to the Xbox ecosystem, its a strategy that has worked well for Sony.
They are definitely going to merge Xbox and Windows in some way that can still keep the two separate (like how steam deck requires a restart to switch between gaming and desktop mode). This would make PC gaming part of the xbox brand and would be even better if they moved as many xbox game purchases to the microsoft store. So many people are moving to PS5 and PC it just makes sense to merge the Xbox OS and Windows in some way to save the brand.

Ppl need to listen what he is saying before getting mad. He does make some interesting points if numbers continue to go down through the next gen an argument could be maked for what he is saying and definitely be a worthwhile discussion, But that’s still too far in the future and maybe then the landscape of the gaming industry could be totally different.
One thing Xbox should do, is ditching DEI, bring back balls to the wall, mature content games, some more obscure games like The back rooms, Ready or Not (if possible), Bodycam and so on. Catering to more mature players. That’s the sole reason I prefer Xbox over PlayStation. PS5 looks and feels so “kiddy”, the controller gimmicky.

Microsoft could have potentially closed that gap had they made Doom the Dark Ages exclusive amount others. However, the money is in the software. They could have if they put a 3 to 6 month exclusive on CoD and put that on Gamepass.
Why Nintendo didn't switch to third party publisher after they sold only 13.5 millions of WiiU ? Well... maybe console market is still a thing ... even if this market never saw more than 180 millions console units sold by PS and Xbox per generation.

Nintendo is still relying on consoles for profit revenue, Microsoft sells them at a loss and makes money on software and gamepass. I think this console was just timed bad with covid and all the development hell on xbox games during this gen. I'd say this gen could easily be microsofts Wii U while next gen really picks it up like the switch. It's kind of ironic with the handheld rumors as well.
They won't leave the console buisness, they are probably happy selling 50m consoles, they are just not competing in selling more than Sony anymore. If it was all about console sales, they wouldn't be bringing games to PS. Consoles is just another avenue to the Corparate giant. The fact that you can play most PS and XBOX games on last gen hardware took the shine out of it for me. I know it happens every generation by but this time it feels worse to me. I own Series X and PS5…
The transition is just a little slower this time because of the shutdowns and chip shortages the first two years. It meant many people weren't jumping on new hardware and developers saw that millions of people were still on older systems. So making their game only for newer systems and ignoring the millions still on older hardware made no sense financially if they wanted their game to sell.

No not really, PC game pass tier(which is awesome as well, cheaper than ULTI but I prefer ULTI) gets you LESS games than XBOX Console Tier game pass, so it can be accessed in a cheaper TIER... but I love my CONSOLE connection Internet servers, and Xbox game pass on 55'' big TV screen XSX / PC Game PASS and GEFORCE now RTX PC streaming/ Xcloud all COMBINED, game pass ulti. I do own a series x but play mostly on pc. With gaming mode & gamepass on pc it's basically a sudo xbox with better hardware (in my case). Next console gen I may not buy an xbox, not needed to play gamepass & use live chat features etc. MS still making $ from me, still will love gamepass even with no console.
I left the Xbox platform at the start of this year. There's nothing special for me on the Xbox console. I'll just stick to PC and pick up a months game pass for each game I want in it per year. So £5.99 to play Indian Jones and done
MS will let consumers decide the fate of Xbox. If we keep buying Xbox as our main way to play games they will keep making consoles. If the majority of us switch to PC or Fire Stick etc... MS might stop making consoles. It's all about how us as gamers want to play Xbox games.

Nope. Sony usually starts making money of their console hardware after 2 years. PS3 probably took them 5 though. Nintendo sells at profit from the get go. They never lose money on hardware.

Yes, series S its the cheapest option to play GTA 6 on new gen, but we have yet to see if series S can run it smoothly with zero compromises to the game, we have already seen that series s isn’t as powerful and already struggling with more demanding games, and GTA 6 is definitely going to be a demanding game.
@@KingSword-f8y there were 3 versions of gta 5, it came out on ps3 and 360 when those consoles should definately not have been running it. and it doesnt "struggle" it doesnt render at same resoution and is more for 1080p so shouldnt be a problem.

This line of thinking is honestly more applicable to Playstation rather Xbox for exactly the same reasons. Xbox doesn't sells consoles for profit Sony does, granted not much. That being said Sony has "shipped 61 million PS5s but Sony has also said that 51% percent of the active player base is still on PS4. Sony is dependent on consoles for their ecosystem and the current trend with the most played games on Playstation are still supported on PS4 and clearly based on player counts the ratio of players on PS4 is shifting meaning those PS5s aren't being used meaning they're not expanding the ecosystem and making software sells. Will Xbox stay in the game and support hardware, yes because they're getting new players and expanding the ecosystem. Sony however is gonna struggle trying to justify PS5 PRO, PS6 and PS7 if half of their playerbase doesn't feel like need to abandon PS4 because the popular games are still supported on the platform and haven't made efforts to expand in other areas as Xbox has done.
I am confused how exactly you conclude that the PS5s aren't used. I mean PS4 still making half the numbers is a real thing and is not that strange but how does that make the other half of PS5s not being used is not something I get.
@SIPEROTH Glad you asked. Here's some brief number crunching to get some figures to work with. PS4 as of August 2024 has sold 117 million units. PS5 as of August 2024 has sold over 61 million units. That's gives us a total of 179 million units. Now when you look at Playstation's MAU (Monthly activity users) there highest count was 123 million in Dec 2023 and there most recent report was 118 million. The problem being that MAU also includes PC and over half of their MAU is always on PS4. So the PS5s are being sold but the number players on PSN isn't growing with it. Partly because you have people upgrading from PS4 to PS5 but also because the sold PS5s aren't being turned on. The two biggest culprits are from the early days of scalpers buying PS5s when stocks were early, that accounted for hundreds of thousands of consoles and while Noone knows exactly how many that was, we do know a lot were never resold. The other factor is Sony technically calls consoles consoles sold as sold to stores aka shipped, and there have many warehouse employees reporting big piles of PS5s sitting in warehouses that haven't been purchased yet. Also here the link for MAU I used here (www.statista.com/statistics/272639/number-of-registered-accounts-of-playstation-network/) The sales counts are easy enough to look up for comparison. Even the reason for the disparity is wrong, the numerical fact that Sony themselves confirmed that 51% of their MAU is on PS4 and the needle on their MAU isn't matching their consoles, which gives them very little profit on sales, is very bad. There's a difference of 61 million between how consoles sold on PS4 and PS5 versus how many players are on PSN. The reality is probably between 25 and 30 million players are on PS5 which puts it neck and neck with XBOX Series X/S. Except Xbox isn't exclusively on consoles which is why their MAU between all platforms they support is over 500 million MAU. So Destins "concern" about Xbox low console sales means they might stop selling hardware is more applicable to Playstation. They're selling consoles but clearly not increasing their player base which is the why they sell consoles to begin with and also why they're expanding into PC.

30 million units sold right now with Xbox series X and S sold Probably sounds very accurate because the last report of 27.7 million units was back in February. It is pretty much on par with the Xbox 360 on the same time frame and let's just be honest Microsoft is not going to stop selling Hardware and I wouldn't be surprised if the handheld console was one such device. I'm already sold if the next Xbox console can play Steam games on the console if the next-gen console can play Steam games from the comfort of your living room.

PSX takes a small loss on each unit sold. At no point this cycle have they made a profit on the console transaction itself. And yes, their margins are weak because of that fact. Much, much weaker than Xbox's in fact.
Gen 10 isn't just a handheld for Xbox. Two consoles are releasing, a main desktop console, premium, aimed at the Xbox enthusiast (hence the talk of it being the biggest gen leap ever in a console, so it will likely be pricey so aimed at the gaming/Xbox enthusiast). And a cheaper handheld for the curious, casual, gamepass gamer who may prefer Nintendo or ps etc

If Xbox strategy was the same as playstations then yes consoles sales would be just as important. But it isn't anymore, Xbox consoles will be a store front to show off what you can get on the Xbox platform. Now there's actually less pressure for Xbox to sell consoles as a reason to keep making them.
Xbox knows that if they get out of the hardware market, they lose a significant number of their Game Pass subscribers. If they stop making consoles, I’m done paying for GP. It’s that simple. I’m not paying $2500-$4000 for a PC every couple years. I guarantee people in my place make up the vast majority of GP subscribers. If GP is their strategy, which it obviously is, they have to keep producing consoles to keep people in GP. It’s really that simple.
Which is the issue they face. If console sales keep going bad then how can they sell Game Pass?

While console-exclusives in general should help hardware sales, Microsoft has really shot themselves in both feet by chasing an 'Xbox everywhere' approach - if gamers can play there favourite games anywhere, what reason is there for them to pick Xbox over another console that still has 1st party exclusives?
If they could get their Game Pass on Playstation and Nintendo systems etc then it wouldn't matter because they will cannibalise those systems.

I'm not sure it's worth bringing up this debate constantly... Seems pretty clear MS is in a bad spot. They need a console to sell gamepass but continuing to try sell consoles like this is a bad idea. Technically they could exit hardware and bring Gamepass to PS5 like Ubisoft+ or EA Play but then they have to share earnings with Sony. Or they could license hardware as is the plan according to a number of rumors. If all that fails... I don't think anyone can predict what MS will do. It's a huge mess because they've essentially handed their future over to competing platforms now.
The only thing everyone seems to agree on is Xbox is making money. So the brand isn't likely to disappear in of itself. But the way people currently engage with the brand? Yes. That is *very* likely to change in the coming years

500 Million active monthly users = 5Billion revenue, Playstation had 116m and generated 6 Billion? So you do the math Destin on which one is generating more with less. And it shows Microsofts numbers are not making sense in how they measure an active user. They count anyone who logs into XBox app. Sony counts people logged into PSN, and the majority they put up number wise are people with consoles.. Meaning more people who actually spend money.
Xbox revenue this past FY was $21.5bil and only included 3 quarters with ABK. Xbox also makes more profit than PSX does. And sells more games.

Microsoft is a software and services business, and hardware is a means to get people to use its software and services. So I dont think they will stop supporting consoles, but they are seemingly more focused on the bigger, more revenue generating markets of PC and Mobile.
For me, it's a case of 'how' are they going to support console in the future vs. 'will they' support consoles. But I do think they are missing a trick by not locking games exclusive wise to the Xbox ecosystem, its a strategy that has worked well for Sony.

They are definitely going to merge Xbox and Windows in some way that can still keep the two separate (like how steam deck requires a restart to switch between gaming and desktop mode). This would make PC gaming part of the xbox brand and would be even better if they moved as many xbox game purchases to the microsoft store. So many people are moving to PS5 and PC it just makes sense to merge the Xbox OS and Windows in some way to save the brand.

One thing Xbox should do, is ditching DEI, bring back balls to the wall, mature content games, some more obscure games like The back rooms, Ready or Not (if possible), Bodycam and so on. The transition is just a little slower this time because of the shutdowns and chip shortages the first two years.
It meant many people weren't jumping on new hardware and developers saw that millions of people were still on older systems. So making their game only for newer systems and ignoring the millions still on older hardware made no sense financially if they wanted their game to sell.

You do not have to agree with him, or if u feel the same then you can. I personally think xbox will have a console for the forseeable, or at least some sort of device with an xbox ui and achievements and a store.
Plenty of games coming in the next 12 to 18 months too, xbox may not sell hardware like playstation but do they have to?. If they have other ways to generate revenue then why does it matter.
Somehow everyone forgets that xbox makes money from its marketplace store. Remove the box and you lose all that money.
No not really, PC game pass tier(which is awesome as well, cheaper than ULTI but I prefer ULTI) gets you LESS games than XBOX Console Tier game pass, so it can be accessed in a cheaper TIER... but I love my CONSOLE connection Internet servers, and Xbox game pass on 55'' big TV screen XSX / PC Game PASS and GEFORCE now RTX PC streaming/ Xcloud all COMBINED, game pass ulti.
Also if you want to USE Xcloud and or GEFORCE now = NEED ULTIMATE sub... combined XSX/PC/Firestick/TVscreen/Phone/Laptop/Tablet. Damn. one sub.
It's a simple thing, Destin. I play more in my ROG Ally than on my Xbox. Because I can play their games on PC
But Xbox counts you as two users even though you are the same user, just playing on a different console.

"It's specifically about hardware sales..." yeah, and that's your problem. In a market of video games that has gotten bigger and more diverse, hardware sales has only one kind of relationship to the economy when you compare it to software. The disconnect happens when people see past beyond that.

I do own a series x but play mostly on pc. With gaming mode & gamepass on pc it's basically a sudo xbox with better hardware (in my case). Next console gen I may not buy an xbox, not needed to play gamepass & use live chat features etc. MS still making $ from me, still will love gamepass even with no console.

im the opposite lol, i have a crazy pc but my xbox does everything i need and i love the social stuff so im always on that
I left the Xbox platform at the start of this year. There's nothing special for me on the Xbox console.
I'll just stick to PC and pick up a months game pass for each game I want in it per year. So £5.99 to play Indian Jones and done
MS will let consumers decide the fate of Xbox. If we keep buying Xbox as our main way to play games they will keep making consoles. If the majority of us switch to PC or Fire Stick etc... MS might stop making consoles. It's all about how us as gamers want to play Xbox games.

Nintendo sells at profit from the get go. They never lose money on hardware.

That’s what I said ,they make their money back from people purchasing their software. But it doesn’t look like Sony has any good games, anywhere, coming soon outside of Astro-bot. That happened to SEGA once, they had a bad year with games coming out, people returned, or sold their console for a lesser price added some money and bought the competitor PlayStation. No one‘s ever promised anything you gotta keep being good at something even Sony PlayStation if they put out bad games for two years, people will sell their console or not buy the next one. There hasn’t been a good game out for Sony since Ryan left and this could be the end for the PlayStation. Hell Divers 2 Is just a flavor of the month competitive first person shooter that won’t last long with all the rest of them coming out.

Destin asks: Will GTA be enough to sell 5-9 million units?, my answer is yes, if GTA 5 sales are anything to go by when that game releases those on next gen that play gta5 will have no choice, the only question is will those on ps4 and xbox one go to series S or X, or playstation? thats where the benefit of gamepass and COD being on gamepass is extra incentive and also the cheapest way to get next gen GTA is series s.

Yes, series S its the cheapest option to play GTA 6 on new gen, but we have yet to see if series S can run it smoothly with zero compromises to the game, we have already seen that series s isn’t as powerful and already struggling with more demanding games, and GTA 6 is definitely going to be a demanding game.
@@KingSword-f8y there were 3 versions of gta 5, it came out on ps3 and 360 when those consoles should definately not have been running it. and it doesnt "struggle" it doesnt render at same resoution and is more for 1080p so shouldnt be a problem.

You also didn't take into account the fact that a lot of people prefer PlayStation games I am an Xbox person and I like the PlayStation games but the truth is that Xbox doesn't put out games like that
This line of thinking is honestly more applicable to Playstation rather Xbox for exactly the same reasons.
Xbox doesn't sells consoles for profit Sony does, granted not much.
That being said Sony has "shipped 61 million PS5s but Sony has also said that 51% percent of the active player base is still on PS4.
Sony is dependent on consoles for their ecosystem and the current trend with the most played games on Playstation are still supported on PS4 and clearly based on player counts the ratio of players on PS4 is shifting meaning those PS5s aren't being used meaning they're not expanding the ecosystem and making software sells.
Will Xbox stay in the game and support hardware, yes because they're getting new players and expanding the ecosystem. Sony however is gonna struggle trying to justify PS5 PRO, PS6 and PS7 if half of their playerbase doesn't feel like need to abandon PS4 because the popular games are still supported on the platform and haven't made efforts to expand in other areas as Xbox has done.
I am confused how exactly you conclude that the PS5s aren't used.
I mean PS4 still making half the numbers is a real thing and is not that strange but how does that make the other half of PS5s not being used is not something I get.
@SIPEROTH Glad you asked. Here's some brief number crunching to get some figures to work with.
PS4 as of August 2024 has sold 117 million units.
PS5 as of August 2024 has sold over 61 million units.
That's gives us a total of 179 million units.
Now when you look at Playstation's MAU (Monthly activity users) there highest count was 123 million in Dec 2023 and there most recent report was 118 million. The problem being that MAU also includes PC and over half of their MAU is always on PS4.
So the PS5s are being sold but the number players on PSN isn't growing with it. Partly because you have people upgrading from PS4 to PS5 but also because the sold PS5s aren't being turned on.
The two biggest culprits are from the early days of scalpers buying PS5s when stocks were early, that accounted for hundreds of thousands of consoles and while Noone knows exactly how many that was, we do know a lot were never resold.
The other factor is Sony technically calls consoles consoles sold as sold to stores aka shipped, and there have many warehouse employees reporting big piles of PS5s sitting in warehouses that haven't been purchased yet.

The sales counts are easy enough to look up for comparison.
Even the reason for the disparity is wrong, the numerical fact that Sony themselves confirmed that 51% of their MAU is on PS4 and the needle on their MAU isn't matching their consoles, which gives them very little profit on sales, is very bad.
There's a difference of 61 million between how consoles sold on PS4 and PS5 versus how many players are on PSN. The reality is probably between 25 and 30 million players are on PS5 which puts it neck and neck with XBOX Series X/S.
Except Xbox isn't exclusively on consoles which is why their MAU between all platforms they support is over 500 million MAU.
So Destins "concern" about Xbox low console sales means they might stop selling hardware is more applicable to Playstation.
They're selling consoles but clearly not increasing their player base which is the why they sell consoles to begin with and also why they're expanding into PC.
