- Threads, a Twitter clone is officially the most rapidly downloaded app in history, gaining 100 million users in 5 days. Yes, using instagram to populate the app played a large part in it's growth, but what's more interesting in the protocol Meta plans to use. Who will come out on top? What about privacy issues? In this episode, we look at the boiling feud between two billionaires.

Tbh, im quite glad to be a social hermit. Not being connected to twitter, facebook, instagram etc gives you a lot of peace of mind.
Still use RUclips tho
@@astrofpv3631 I think RUclips is different because it is basically a search engine for videos. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are not search engines at their cores. You follow people and continually listen to them. Of course, you can subscribe to RUclips channels as well, and you can also search for topics on other social media sites, so of course there is some similarity... However, rather than seeing what a friend ate for breakfast, or how much a stupid celebrity hates a current or past president, or some trash propaganda that a corporation spews out, you are looking for videos that interest you. So in that respect, RUclips is more like TV that is all "on demand", even if it has numerous social media aspects.
@@RationalificI think RUclips is becoming more like other social media's with shorts and stuff like community posts and stories.

Community notes is the best feature on any social media. It helps curb the biggest downside of social media- propagation of bullshit
The issue with Community Notes is it can cause false assurance. Sure, when it is used correctly, it's better than nothing, but giving your trust to it can influence you into believing things you see that *aren't* disputed by a community note, causing damage that wouldn't have been caused if it hadn't existed. I still think there is a better alternative, especially with AI nowadays or in the near future. And also especially since Community Notes is approved by a small handful or people, it can also get weaponized by select a bias of people
@@ShaneTheBane I think it's better than other forms of fact checking. Do you have any examples of false community notes?
@@ShaneTheBane Community notes have been disputed, very rare but it happens. Unlike the MSM, Snopes and 3rd party so called fact checkers who are beyond biased. Community Notes have fact cheked numbers of Snopes shows how amazing it is. Also Community notes is 50 left 50/right and if you read there approval process its way better than anything Meta has. Also you can apply for community notes and its not a small group and its mixed group of people from both ends. Everything can be weaponized but when you do your best to keep it balance the chances are much smaller compared to fact checkers on facebook who are 9/10 left leaning.
@@ShaneTheBane the thing with community notes is that sources must be provided to create a note and then the notes get voted on by the user, so even if something verifiably wrong shows up, you can downvote and correct it.

Threads has become a massive failure in just 3 weeks this video didn't age well
What breaks the deal for me is the fact that there's close to 0 chance of your thread popping up in the feed for the public unless you have 100,000s of followers.

It’s naive to think that governments don’t already have access to Meta and Twitter’s user data.
You realize your Government knows who you are, where you live, your date of birth, where you were born, where you went to school, where you moved, your medical history, grades, where you spend your money, how you earn your money, how much you earn, all your certificates, they know who your family are, who you are related to and can trace your entire family history as far back as government records allow and so much more. Why the fuck would they need your followers list on twitter??

As an artist, I use almost every social media there is. And the reason i like signing up to thread is because i don't have to follow other account that i already followed on Instagram. instagram is basically dead for artist, it's algorithm doesn't promote art like they used to. That's why there's so many artist on twitter nowadays, because their retweet and likes actually helps artist to find each other. Now twitter kinda killed that with tweet limit, and that's make thread looking a lot better. Sure, i will miss the NSFW art on Twitter, but hey, i can open my thread in public. Sometimes censorship has it's own benefit.and also, if you're afraid your data being sold, it probably already is. It's not only meta that use your data
I don't get the comparison about the growth of platforms. Using your main company to transfer followers is not really building a new platform. It's more a component of the metaverse that hase a diffrent front end. But still a great video!
And also making it impossible to delete your Threads account without deleting you Instagram account
Its not a different platform per se.
Threads being part of the activity hub is actually just connecting Instagram-platform with everything else out there. So its growing because of more exposure. Its actually Instagram (and facebook) thats growing through Threads.
@@quark6847 Not to mention intrusiveness, facebook would demand government ID to lock, and they found reasons to ask, instagram asks for video selfies.
Marketing hype.
With over 2 billion insta users and 100 million joining threads thats a conversion ratio of less than 5%
From a business perspective, thats a pretty terrible result - when less than 5% of your userbase are willing to click a few buttons to sign-up to your new feature that ain't a roaring success. That's a huge flop - by comparison if the 300k twitter blue subscriptions estimate is accurate out of 400 million total users that's a conversion ratio of 0.075% and these are *paying* subscribers not free like threads.
It essentially reveals that only a small vocal minority need or want a safe space, giving them that on meta doesn't harm discourse on twitter.. no one is going to think, hey you know what's missing on twitter now that ppl have moved to threads.. more overly sensitive ppl that get easily offended and hall monitors silencing wrong-think! 😂

100 million sign ups? Wow, in 2015 the hugely succesful social media platform known as Google+ had 2.5 billion profiles. It's almost like a company with an already billion user size userbase can just usher a few over to its other platform or something.
Yea, it wasn't signups, it was sign ins
Most Threads accounts are ported Instagram accounts, not actual signups, so the numbers are massively overinflated and arguably meaningless.
2.5 billion profiles but no-one created them, most people didn't even know they had an account 0 engagement. Not remotely the same
@@Dynasty1818Not really... u have to download & install the app, walk thru permissions & TOS pages & create ur profile & upload ur profile pic before interacting & 100 million ppl have done that.
It’s different, the numbers are obviously inflated and no other social network is or will be able to do the same because it would mean creating a new account and providing information which you don’t need for threads.
But these 100M users actually downloaded threads app and signed in(associating their instagram accounts to threads).
What Google did was basically just telling that your Google account is also a G+ account regardless of you being aware or willingly downloading it(or going to g+ site).
If meta did the same threads would have 2.3 Bilion users.

Why does everyone whine about Social Media invading their privacy, while signing up for it every chance they get?
Different people
because people are not well educated about privacy and their convenience trumps privacy.
@@slashtab i seriously don't understand how Meta knowing what i googled last night will ruin my life? Why are people so stuck up about privacy
@@IWantToStayAtYourHouse Why should I care about privacy?
You already do. Everyone has some expectation of privacy. We don't want to indiscriminately share every single aspect of our lives with everyone else.
But as we move more of activities online, there is an ever increasing portion of our lives which is being recorded by corporations and governments, and these records can be used to our disadvantage, at any time, now or any-time in the future. Essentially, we're now in an information arms race. But unlike other historical analogies that might be cited, the scale of our storage and processing capabilities are immense and extremely powerful, and that changes the game.
On a personal level, simple private bits of our lives which we take for granted are being collected and stored indefinitely. Things like:
-renting a sexy video
-discussing business with a partner
-calling an overseas relative
- emailing an off-color joke to a friend
-entering your bank account password
-text messages to your lover
-sending your business records to an accountant
-seeking help for depression
-writing about your past history of alcoholism
-your online search and browsing history (yes, all of it)
Whether it's a moment of indiscretion, or just an unfortunate circumstance is irrelevant. Imagine that information in the hands of:
-a boss who wants to lower your wages
- a political opponent
- a business competitor
-a disgruntled neighbor
-a criminal
-the town gossip
- an important business client
But the implications on a societal level are even more dire. The NSA's over-reaching surveillance efforts combined with developments in big-data dramatically shift the playing field in favor of those who can access information which is unavailable to the rest of us. These activities allow the government to:
- engage in insider trading and corporate espionage to ensure perpetual economic dominance
-co-opt and exploit all new scientific breakthroughs, regardless of their origin or originally intended use
- blackmail coerce anyone (including judges, politicians, and military commanders) who isn't walking the party line
Whether you trust the current administration with this power is not the issue. The question is, are you also trusting of all future administrations? Unless the answer is yes, our society must engage in a discussion in order to adopt appropriate policies which promote a sustainable solution in our new world of big-data. Until then, we need to hang on long enough for our rather dysfunctional social systems and governments to evolve adequately. By individually using privacy technologies, we help to protect everyone's privacy.
A mass-surveillance system is the perfect dictatorship tool. Those who want to maintain their power will use it to censor and harass anybody who criticizes them, to curtail any organization of any protest, to stop any journalist and lawyer from trying to investigate and prosecute them for corruption and crimes they commit. Numerous studies have confirmed that chilling effects on free speech and rights of association that occur, only based on the perception of being surveilled, and not being actively targeted.
If people lose their right to privacy, if they live under constant surveillance, or perceived threat of constant surveillance, then they have lost every other right they have. Full stop - the right to privacy is that fundamental.
and your comment is ignorant? why should you? that's the question you should seek answer to and not make it point in your discussion. credit: r/privacy

I don't care much for Threads or Twitter but Meta's entanglement with ActivityPub is interesting. I'm naïve enough to hope that shining more light on the benefits of decentralisation is a good thing to help it flourish, but I'm worried Meta will somehow swallow it whole and get it to only benefit their bottom line.

@@bojangprodoktschns5428 It's literally impossible for that to happen cuz of how decentralization works. Worst case scenario, some of the large instances will fall under the control of zuck or something, and you can just migrate to another instance.
They say zuck wants free content for threads, but it goes both ways I think. Benefiting from the bigger audience of meta while keeping your privacy with mastodon. I hope it works that way.
Another Day, another incredible ColdFusion upload! Great video as always!
6:58 I like that he's referred to as "ZUCC" even in non-meme contexts.
People age 13-17 on Instagram are like 7% of the entire userbase. Core userbase of Instagram are mostly older Gen Zers and younger Millennials. Insta userbase numbers are already stagnating. I don't see much of advantage or influence over younger audiences. For comparison on TikTok those numbers are around 15% so double of Insta and Twitter's.
On top of that Zuck's known for copying things rather than coming up with unique ideas on his own. And the fact that he kickstarted the whole Metaverse just goes to show that he has no idea what he's doing either. Also the news about Threads "booming" isn't anything special if it's backed by Instagram. You don't have much to do in order to signup on Threads if you already have an Instagram account.
Imo this whole threads app will be lagging behind the moment people will figure out that there's nothing really to do there. Twitter core was specifically designed to catch users' attention and keep them in the loop and to do that they had to use "force engagement." Hot takes, gotcha tweets, politics, max characters, etc. It's all part of the design that Meta overlooked.
Let Musk transform or completely destroy Twitter, but I don't believe in any real success for Threads App.
Someone said that people want boring site. I don't think so. If you see a car burning on the streets it's going to take your attention whether you like or not. Twitter takes all attention and while media wants otherwise to assign all that attention to Threads, it just won't work. Because Threads is nothing special, but plain old copy of Twitter and it will always bear that badge no matter what.
No thanks... Meta is tracking as much User data as possible and on top of that Threads(subsidiary) is going dictating me with their moderation policy! How dumb do you think I am? 😂
I can bet you meta will win out eventually
Twitter actually do the same thing. Everything you do is tracked.
Bruh, you're using Snapchat so don't give us that bullshit. Your location is always visible.
Without data tracking and selling it, you and I wouldn't be able to use these services for free. Every platform does it. That's fine.
But when platforms like thread wants to control via moderation. People will walk away, because there are so many platforms available. Threads might become woke and cancel culture heaven. While twitter will become the proxy of real world.
And people will choose freedom over comfort.
Zuck is a digital vampire. He needs to feed on our data to stay immortal.
My problem with Twitter isn't the platform itself but the insufferable people who treat as though it's important.
This especially true of media types. A number changing on their phone = bullying. A compilation is tweets is a "news article".
But twitter is important and influential. It has to be one of the most influential social media platform when it comes to geo-politics. Remember President Trump basically ran his 2016 campaign on Twitter...
Twitter is actually very important in free speech/censorship/narrative alone.
@@chitowncubby27

Beyond dispute, no one can argue. Should be banned for all those under 18 and otherwise heavily regulated.
In 15-20 years people will think of social media exactly what we do of smoking: "There were a whole lot of ads, lot of peer pressure to join and people had no idea how harmful it was. The companies responsible for it did and they didn't care."
touché
mostly agree. however, it is also arguably one of the best things for the free flow of information and diminishing totalitarian control. As long as there is one social media company that is not under government control (whether directly or indirectly), than it will be very difficult for the truth to be suppressed.
Puting aside there being many different viewpoints so finding out what is "true" is another battle on its own - it is at least possible to obtain it. I like the idea of having a online public square for the world - however it can very easily turn into something very bad if censorship becomes the norm. Then social media will turn into a weapon all dead dictators wished they had.

Your content is such amazing quality! Thank you
Idk how many videos on this topic have been pushed at me, but I ignored all of them until now because they were all about the hype. I'm watching this one because you made it.
Just because Thread is owned by FB I am not interested
🤡
@@Splucked Given the long history of misuse of user data by FB who's the clown?
It took Twitter 4 years to build up 11 mil users, because Twitter was the first.
Great video! Actually, the market valuation, USP and main revenue source of current social media platforms is the user data, not the UI elements and functionalities of an app. That's why I don't think any of the established centrally managed "data monopolies" would give up their USP with a decentralized approach. To evolve into a more decentralized and democratized social media society, new disrupting player need to emerge as a new wave. Most likely existing incumbents won't be able to revolutionize their existing business model as much, so they are trying to milk the existing model as much and long as possible. Personally, I am waiting for the moment when decentralized platform become mainstream eventually, avoiding this ridiculous social media data monopolies.
Well this aged quickly, threads the stupid ass monitoring & censorship app is dying 🤷♀️
South park already said it best : Its either "giant douche" or a "turd sandwich".
I uninstalled twitter recently because I was getting too many stupid notifications. Life was better after that. No way I'm going to replace it with Zuckerberg stuff.
mwa the thing about activity pub is I think overblown, that capability was easy to build from the start of Facebook and even earlier. integrating after a user base was build is harder tho.
Threads can't replace Twitter because is a completely different kind of app. It's like saying Instagram will replace Twitter. They will end up having different user bases.
no, Twitter will die, if Elon can't even pay those $70 Million AWS server bill today,
what makes you think that he could pay those bill tommorow or 1-6 months from now?
the cracks already shows,
the biggest crack was that people are actually actively looking for an alternatives of Twitter,
which is the Biggest most existentials danger of all.
not to mention, their userbase was declining crazy fast, meaning that they had even less money to pay their bill.
don't forget, just because a business is running, doesn't mean it make any profit, and doesn't mean it won't die.
business can die as easily
No, they won't lol, most Twitter users probably have an Instagram, you can already see the dip in user use in twitter during the release of threads
@@visorij3374 That's because it's a new app and user bases are still shifting based on expectation rather than reality. Once they see it's a different kind of app, those who don't like Threads will come back.
@@visorij3374Having overlap doesn't mean you wont have different user bases.
@@Miranox2 remember people and influencers in general are praising Threads.
Also, for the longest time, Twitter had a reputation for being toxic.
Mastodon is the proof that people was fed up with Twitter.
Also, Twitter never had a billion users before, and they don't know how to get to that number. They're bleeding money hard
Compared to meta which Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, all of them have 2 Billions+ users.
They had done it before, and they know how to do it again with Threads
Twitter is just a pocket change, Twitter only had 250+M Users
This video did not age well,,, around 30 days later of the publication date
Dayum Dagogo got the drill music on the intro 😳😮
Great video my guy 💪🏾…. SN I do want see them fight and Meta makes me sick with their toxicity
Threads is the new Google+, VisionPro the new google glass.
You should cover Bluesky, the app's still in closed beta invite only but it also aims for open source, federated social media where the app is merely a front end skin. It went from 25k to 200k users in 2 months even while the invite links are super slow. It's a real underdog but I hope it comes out on top since I'm not a fan of Meta/Instagram's data collection.
@@squishy-tomato yeahhh i get why though, there are not many features in place yet in their roadmap + their servers need to be beefed up and scaled. its going through some growing pains already
This situation between Thread & Twitter is interesting & i’m confident that Thread has more advantages than Twitter. Nevertheless, i won’t be downloading Thread or even returning to Twitter as there’s way too much toxic & traumatizing stuff on social media nowadays & i’m too old to use socials anyway. Right now i simply enjoy life by watching RUclips & doing outdoor activities. That gives me less headache & feels less physically tired
it doesn't, more advantages? lol, twitter already has the echosystem, threads has a bung of IG-users that wants to venture out their brands. you can't even compare them.
@@stockholmpublishings2937 😂😂 😂 yes, they have their “own ecosystem, “let the crazy, toxic people and bots stay on twitter. Cheers!
Threads is dead
@@AlexMurillo99 and now no one uses threads anymore and you're still at twitter.
good call there buddy.
@@stockholmpublishings2937 you mean 25m active daily users 😂😂
I love how every normal person or video like this acknowledges the trouble Twitter has seen recently, but if you go on Twitter you'll find plenty of fan boys yelling at you, "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG!" "IT WAS ALWAYS BAD!" "ITS BETTER THAN EVER", as if that discounts the facts.
It is better.
@@Sebster85 yes, the regular outages and loss of authentication have been absolute improvements.

Just here 1 week later after Threads died...lmao

Great work, as always Dagogo! 🔥
What makes me laugh and no media is mentioning, that I've seen anyway, is that Threads' 100 million users it gained so fast is just laughable nonsense designed to fake a sense of popularity and for everyone to jump on the bandwagon and be "part of it too" or whatever. Those 100 million are mostly just ported accounts from Instagram, not actual fresh signups.
Welcome to corporate America. This is how the game is played.
Fwiw, I've had an IG account for years and I never use it. IG is boring af. I *will* use Threads tho, and IG made it a few simple clicks to sign up.
This is not entirely true. You would need to define your definition of a "fresh sign up". As already mentioned comma just because you have an instagram account does not mean you have a thread's account. You need to consciously make the decision to download the app comma then sign in.
@@SpluckedMan discovered what is known in the business as Spectacle
