- 1976 (Shirley Bassey hosts Janis Ian on her 1976 TV Variety Show. In this clip Shirley performs a beautiful cover of Janis' hit song, 'Jesse' with Janis accompanying her on the piano, and then Janis performs another one of her huge hits, 'At Seventeen' - I am a male, but I remember when this song came out and thought how her lyrics were really heart felt and speaking out to so many people!
Shirley recorded and released the song, 'Jesse' on her 1975 LP titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Good, Bad, But Beautiful'
ABOUT the songwriter, Janis Ian:
Janis Ian (born Janis Eddy Fink, April 7, 1951) is an American songwriter, singer, musician, columnist, and science fiction author. She had a career singing in the 1960s and 1970s, and has continued recording into the 21st century. In 1975, Ian won a Grammy Award for her song, "At Seventeen". Her most successful single in the United States was "At Seventeen", released in 1975, a bittersweet commentary on adolescent cruelty, the illusion of popularity, and teenage angst, as reflected upon from the maturity of adulthood. "At Seventeen" was a smash, receiving tremendous acclaim from critics and record buyers alike - it charted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Other artists have recorded Ian's compositions, most notably Roberta Flack, who had a hit in 1973 with Ian's song "Jesse" also recorded by Dame Shirley Bassey, Joan Baez and Dottie West; Ian's own version is featured on her 1974 album Stars (the title song of which has also been oft-covered, including versions by Cher, Nina Simone and Barbara Cook).
LYRICS:
Jesse, come home
There's a hole in the bed
Where we slept
And now it's growin' cold
Hey Jesse, your face in the place
Where we lay by the hearth
All apart
It hangs on my heart
And I'm keeping the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared
I wait for you
Hey Jesse, I'm lonely, come home
Jesse, the floors and the boards
Recalling your steps
And I remember too
All the pictures are fading
And shaded in grey
But I still set a place
On the table at noon
And I'm leaving the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared
I'll wait for you
Hey Jesse, I'm lonely, come home
Jesse, the spread on the bed
Is like when you left
I've kept it up for you
All the blues and the greens
Have been recently cleaned
And it's seemingly new
Hey Jess', me and you
We'll swallow the light on the stair
We'll do up my hair
And sleep unaware
Hey Jesse, I'm lonely, come home
Hey Jesse, I'm lonely, come home...
AT SEVENTEEN Lyrics:
I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
In high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems
At seventeen
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
Said, Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
And the rich relationed hometown queen
Married into what she needs
A guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly
Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
Indebentures of quality
And dubious integrity
Their small town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received
At seventeen
To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me
We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, come dance with me
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me
At seventeen
Such a wonderful song, love Janis Ian's version but this is fantastic. I heard this as a child and still listen to it with shivers at age 54.
An all time great song sung to perfection by an all time great singer. Nice to hear her in a more subdued mode.. Shame on the people who gave this great performance the thumbs down
Perhaps it gets thumbs down because of the tape hiss. I have the LP and the CD, so I can listen to a clean version whenever I want. The hiss really takes away from a wonderful performance.
The downvoters should be paraded through town and publicly humiliated!
Scot we must be about the same age! I'm 54 so I was about 15 when I first saw Janis an sing this on TV - I was at a friend's house and was GLUED to the set and blown away aftewards and had to act normal in front of my friend and her family even tho I'd be totally thrown by it -intense memory even now 40 years later
it isn't all it seems at 17
Shirley Bassey's voice and stage presence (especially her facial expressions) are simply divine.
I'm a lifelong fan of Janis Ian and a new Shirley Bassey fan
Wow, what a performance and backing At Seventeen.
Another beautiful song by Shirley, timeless classic again.
My Queen ❤
Shirley Bassey has a sublime voice; my father loved her & her songs form part of the soundtrack of my childhood. However, it's only now that i can truly appreciate how she interpreted the songs she sang & how she sang as a woman, sometimes wronged, but always a woman who loved. She was, is, glorious.
Outstanding - both performances just spellbinding.
I didn't think I liked Shirley Bassey till I listened to this. I've just realised all I really know of her voice is the caricatures you see in pop culture. Excuse me whilst I go listen to more of her singing!
Love this song! Thanks for the upload.
Shirley Bassey and Janis Ian. Two Legends. Love these two songs.
I never heard this song before but it’s has a beautiful feeling to it
My favorite songs !
grai...just turned 57 in November. Oh, how the time goes by so fast now...
Such emotion...sad, longing. Live for today Don't loose your love.
Probably my two favourite Janus Ian songs. She is a legend!
Great talent. I love Janis too!
This is a favorite Shirley song of mine, Ms Mayor Harriet. I'm glad that you enjoyed it, Regards, Scot
I know she sang “gold finger” but I am actually quite impressed with her version of a favorite song of mine.
I ❤️ Janis Ian!
Hi Lisa: Most people who take an unbiased look at seven decades of recordings and live performances by Shirley Bassey most likely will come to the conclusion that this lady is one versatile vocalist. She has the pipes to sing anything. You can't become the largest selling female artist from any country by singing only on genre of song. Shirley was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records back in 2000 for being the largest selling female artist from the United Kingdom. Regards, Scot
@@sas9023055 Shirley Bassey ,was probably the first British biracial superstar.
Incredibly popular here in Britain in the 70s.
Kind of smaltzy, but that was light entertainment.
Not a fan,but l understand her popularity.
At seventeen?
Still relevant today (2020) and always will be so long as the society accepts to star in these god awful plays, where "popular girls" are competing against the rest of them...
I new " Jesse " from Joan Baez's " Diamonds and Rust " album... One of if not the best renditions I think. Early teens, Dad had recently died, Mom listened from her blue and green bedroom... Cathartic...
Quality songs, fantastic artists.
Just wonderful talent Janis
Love her!
Janis Ian was never an ugly ducklling. Mybe a plain Jane bit still beautiful

One of the most beautiful and yet painful love songs I have ever heard. Roberta does it so much better. I love Shirley but the pain and feeling is just not like Roberta Flack sings it.
Agree to disagree. This is a beautiful rendition of this classic song by Shirley Bassey.
Love this video....such a lovely song sung by the best....Dame Shirley!....
Thanks Scot...
Oh a long time since I heard. This it's such a beautiful. Song Thankyou
She lost her daughter..😢
I love Shirley Bassey, but no one sings this song like Janice Ian. My favorite Bassey song is "For all we Know".
👍
Nothing beats a Dame. Dame Shirley Bassey
Love you Scot, you have a lot of fabulous clips. This is another one, just right for the moment.
