I get excited whenever I see a death grips reaction because I know whenever they start to do something weird Smags is just gonna sit there with the most confused face known to man and it’s amazing
Ring a bell is the song that got me into death grips, now this album is one of my all time faves and death grips is one of my fav bands Also I’ll continue to ask for volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern by lil ugly mane
Highly, highly second this. Lil Ugly Mane is one of the most talented artists of the 21st century, and volcanic bird enemy is especially one of the most creative and beautifully melancholic albums I’ve ever heard
I think albums like this and Year of the Snitch have a layer of self-reference and meta awareness of their audience that reasonably wouldn’t register with anybody who is new to the band, or kept up with them on social media at the time or watched a video essay or whatever u can do. Every project is worth checking out IMO and would make an entertaining reaction. If you save YotS for last you might catch some of the ways they sample their own discography in it.
once they get into death grips 2.0, the meta level of their art gets cranked to 11. they are talking to YOU, talking about YOUR obsession with the band.
I’m so glad someone else had the same exact reaction I did when I first heard Ring A Bell. Never heard a melody that heavenly before on a Death Grips song
Thought you would like this one. I like what you said about liking it against your will lol. Yeah, this is definitely one of those albums that just warps your brain chemistry until you like every song even if you don’t want to. Production and catchiness is just through the roof.
Definitely my favorite full listen from Death Grips. It’s so to the point and concise while also putting out some of their best songs. Knew you’d like this one. Keep it up 👏🏻
I’d highly recommend checking out their 2017 EP that was released after Bottomless Pit which is Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber), its a pretty short EP/mini album at around 22+ minutes, but its all condensed into one song with multiple sections making it a crazy journey with no breaks. My personal favorite project they’ve done and I think you would enjoy it quite a bit!
Now this is a reaction I’m exited to watch. Spikes is probably one of my favorite Death Grips songs. Hot Head is also a banger:) A couple of recommendations: Lift to experience - the Texas Jerusalem Crossroads Silver Jews - the natural bridge Asobi Seksu - Citrus Brian Eno - Here come the warm jets
My theory on understanding some of the lyrics even though most are indecipherable to me is that he's usually talking directly to you the listener, not just some theoretical person. That idea adds a layer of disturbance for me when he's talking about posessing you or fucking you in half. I think alot of his lyrics actually refer to how listening to him scream in your ears on a daily basis will affect you and drive you as crazy as he is.
just for a little bit of context for track 10 Albert Fish was a serial killer and all around really demented person, don't google him unless you're prepared to hear about child s.a. and extreme sexual perversion.
have you listened to you forgot it in people by broken social scene?? my favorite album of all time and it would fit perfectly with the kind of albums you’ve been covering! happy new year 💜
Yo smags, I've been curious, do you get annoyed when people keep commenting the same suggestions on each of your uploads, or does that actually help you figure out what to listen to? I have album recommendations, but I also feel that spamming them will just turn you away from them. Whats your preference in this regard?
You need to listen to steroids next. It’s such a masterpiece of chaos and despite it being kinda overwhelming, it feels like every little sound and noise fits in perfectly with the aesthetic of the project. It’s such a cathartic experience once you get past the grating and abrasive nature of it. I listened to it pretty much every day during the end stages of my dad’s cancer and it really helped me. It felt like the equivalent of screaming into a pillow or throwing a bunch of glass at a wall in frustration and helped me keep myself together so I could be there for my dad and the rest of my family in his final days
ITS TIME ! ! ! Injury Reserve - Live from the dentist office Clipping. - There existed an addiction to blood Since you requested more experimental hiphop. Love the content
smags great stuff as always goat, keep it coming!! i strongly suggest double negative by low if you havent listened, its a lot more lowkey than grips but as a dg fan their music strongly resonates. i don't usually comment i just saw bottomless pit review and knew i had to
People think the Bottomless Pit refers to Charles Manson's hideout in Death Valley of the same name. He told his followers to wait here while the apocalypse happened. This would make sense considering they sampled him on Beware and have shown interest in him and the occult. I think it might be that, but also considering the subject matter of a lot of songs here and the title track, the bottomless pit also refers to the feeling of unquenchable desire and what it does to people. In this case mainly lust. Just my guess, I'm also not great with dissecting DG lyrics and stuff This album is dope though! They managed to make an album catchier than The Money Store while still bringing new ideas and sounds to the table. I especially love Warping, Houdini and Ring a Bell, but every song is dope here really lol If you listen to more I'd love to hear what you think of No Love Deep Web. Might be my favorite album by them Appreciate all that you do Smags!! Hope you had a good holiday! And happy new year dude! 🥳
awesomesauce smags i like this one too, three bedrooms and the title track r my favs. no love deep web has a couple bangers, i think u would fw some danny brown
You gotta get that No Love Deep Web! It's my favorite of their albums, followed by The Money Store and Bottomless Pit, tied. Its sound is similar to 80808
I just realized you haven't covered Yves Tumor yet, that would be a perfect follow up to death grips. Dude just released one of my albums of 2023. I know you got a decent backcatalog of albums (Autechre are still pending), but def make sure Yves Tumor is on there as well, I think you'd vibe.
Yea bottomless pit the title track is abt death grips fans fiending for more death grips music but never being satisfied. I imagine it as a direct msg to death grips fans
I have a question for you Do you list of albums to react to or you see what on top ? Suggestions : Captain Murphy - duality ( I don't like to repeat my suggestions but because you wanted experimental hiphop I repeat ) Flying lotus - Cosmogramma / flying louts - until the quiet comes (absolutely amazing electric/jazz/hiphop albums and it has great features in it like thom york and thundercat) Giles corey - giles corey(no need to explain) Hopefully your next death grips album review/react is year of the snitch my favourite
hey this is probably a shot in the dark, but could you please do a reaction to government plates by death grips? you probably wont like it as much as its very different from the other stuff they make but its my favorite album from them and ur great at dissecting lyrics so i think youd like the story the album tells at least. and also steroids!!
defo my favorite death grips album!! btw u should check out i killed your dog by l‘rain 🤞🤞 (very calm and different from this but super interesting and psychedelic)

VBE so good
Highly, highly second this. Lil Ugly Mane is one of the most talented artists of the 21st century, and volcanic bird enemy is especially one of the most creative and beautifully melancholic albums I’ve ever heard
Love that album. It creates a certain feeling and a sound that i‘ve never heard before

I think you could really love Injury Reserve. Id start with Floss and then the next 2 albums in order. Their final album is an absolute masterpiece
100%. Knees is probably the best song ever made
when it comes to experimental hip hop clipping. is very worth checking out, especially their newest two albums
Yessss! Continue with the rest of their catalog pls!
Definitely my favorite full listen from Death Grips. It’s so to the point and concise while also putting out some of their best songs. Knew you’d like this one. Keep it up 👏🏻
May I jump on the "please Giles Corey" train?
