Hiking the Final 100 Miles of the PCT (again)

  • The northern most 100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail are some of the most scenic and wonderful of the entire hike. Last year I was fortunate enough to thru hike the PCT, and have a continuous hike without having to miss anything because of fires. Unfortunately many people did not have this same experience, instead being stopped short of completing the PCT because of weather which is out of their control.
    Sprocket also thru hiked the PCT last year, but because of fires was not able to finish the very last 60 miles of the trail to Canada, after having walked 2,600 miles to get there! So although this is a section hike from Stehekin Washington, to the Canadian border (then back to Harts Pass and Mazama) the reality is that this is her finishing up what she was not able to do prior. To hike from Rainy Pass to the northern terminus.

    This is also a shakedown hike for us, as soon we will be heading off to hike the Great Divide Trail! An 800 mile trail through the Canadian Rockies, including places like Banff and Jasper, starting from Waterton Lakes National Park, and terminating at Kakwa Lake just north of Mount Robson (the highest point in the Canadian Rockies.)
    So we strapped on a lot of the same ultralight gear that we will be bringing on the GDT, and decided that this would be a great warmup.

    The ending scene (15:30), looking down on the monument from above and then up the border cleared on the mountainside beyond is spectacular. I have seen many hikers walk the last few hundred yards to the border on RUclips, and then in celebration stand beside and then on top of the monument, but this camera shot is an original in my experience. Once again you bring an amazingly fresh perspective with your photography and narration. Very special. Congratulations.

    I’m a 2023 PCT thru hiker who sadly couldn’t get the full continuous footpath (got booted by blizzards in the Sierra in June and I flipped to Canada and back to have as many steps at least as possible). I saw you both in the rain and I’m afraid I was a bit grumpy because I was soaked and wasn’t sure if it was you. I had the palante and a clear Walmart poncho for those few days of rain. God what a beautiful section, thank you for capturing it. While I now hike south to midway through the Sierra to end my original north bound hike, that monument will always feel like the end to me. A culmination of so many hopes and dreams and just the simplicity of walking. This made me cry. Congrats to Sprocket (hope spelling is correct). I was so sad to see the fires last year, and this year with the snow just frustrated I had to change directions and plans. I hope to be back to do that stretch again later this fall just to take it all in for the second time. You’re right, the PCT is home. Always will be. Thank you for your videos.

    I got to the border last year on September 2nd as it closed. We all felt heartbroken for those behind us. I went back to Oregon to finish what I had missed, only to be shut down by fires there as well. It gave me a reason to go back this year, similar to Sprocket, and I'm so grateful for that. It allowed me to do the Lionshead Closure and connect my steps fully, just in Oregon. Congrats, Sprocket! You are not alone in picking up those last miles this year. The PCT is a special part of the world.

    What a beautiful video. It's bittersweet for me though, as I was one of many who got stopped just shy of the border. Such a strange experience walking for months on end towards a singular goal and location, only to be stopped so close to the end and have no control of the situation. Alas, that's life.
    Really hoping to make it back out there one day and do those last 80 miles. Glad Sprocket was able to get her last miles!

    It is a very beautiful section. I've been to the monument twice, hiked all of Washington and Oregon twice. Yet I still haven't finished the trail over 3000 miles later having started in 2016 on June 14th Autumn Leaves and I were the first to sign the log book that year a day later we would be bailing out. We were way in over our heads the snow traverses were too dangerous. Five days later after nearly suffering hypothermia going back over Robinson Creek pass we were safe again and I was forever addicted to the PCT. Happy trails man love your videos you and others have taught me a lot.

    My boyfriend and I are planning to do this stretch this summer in August and end in Manning Park, but I'm having a hard time understanding how long the longest water carry is (even with the water report). How long was the longest water carry that you had to do? Would be super helpful to know! 😊

      Do you have the Farout app? You can see all the water sources with it, and how far apart they are. I honestly don't remember there being much of a problem with water in the northern 100 miles of the PCT. Lot's and lots of little streams and springs. I wouldn't like totally disregard paying attention, but I don't recall any issue.

    The tarp tent looks very light. But what do you do about insects and slugs? On my last camping trip it rained and by morning the mesh liner of my tent had several large slugs crawling up the outside. I wouldn't have liked them inside with me!

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  11 месяцев назад +3

      It's not the best shelter for all seasons, or for all trails, is probably the answer you need here! But some areas, or some times of the year it is by far the lightest shelter possible and totally safe. It's just knowing when to use it, and when to leave it at home. Beyond that there's a lot of campsite selection tricks that help alleviate insects a whole lot which I've talked about in some other videos before. That's personally how I get away with using a tarp on so many of my past hikes even when the season or trail may not call for it
