  • In this video, I tell you why I love the new Ashdown CTM-15 I found at Gearfest through Sweetwater. It's a small punchy tube amp with 15 Watts of all tube power that you can use without a load, so you don't need it plugged into a speaker. I really like Ashdown for a gritty British rock vibe, and this amp punches hard. Thanks to the guys at PRS for letting me crash their jam session and Ashdown for capturing the moment!

    I love that you approach the distortion aspect of this amp from a perspective of being someone that plays basically clean, where the bass sounds like a bass. The culture is so overrun with distortion. So thank you for your approach.

    I recorded a full album with a fender pro junior (guitar amp, also twin el84), connected to a 1x15 bass speaker. Sounded glorious. Had to use a tone hammer di as a pre so I had some controls on the mids, but great results and super cheap

    and I'm not happy with the sound of this Amp. It sounds ok but it don't works good with my Fender 60's Precision Bass+Fender 9050's strings. I love the overdrive Sound in this Video. What a Precision Bass is that?

      The PF-20 is an interesting option as well. I think the tone of the two amps is probably very different. I’m guessing this one is more aggressive, but it would be an interesting comparison to have them side by side. Thanks for sharing! ⚡️

      I recently picked up a Ampeg PF-50T head for home practicing and recording. Love that little tube amp. Price wise this is close but 35w less so it would be closer to the PF-20T. It’s great that Ashdown is making an all tube head though.

    Might very well be because I primarily play modern metal/rock/fusion/jazz, but this kind of tone never sat right with me in any shape or form. I'm not a fan of the damped sound, especially not in combination with flatwound strings and/or a bridge mute - it gives off a kind of "I haven't changed my strings in three years" vibe. All respect to Ashdown, though! There's definitely nothing wrong with the craftmanship side of things, they definitely know what they're doing and I'm glad that the sound is available for those who enjoy it. On the other hand, I don't like the classic Ampeg rock sound either, but I think that's because people often dial them in so that there's just a shitload of low (almost sub-bass range) frequencies, which is NOT ideal for when you actually want to play something other than just root notes. My tone preference is definitely leaning towards the Trace Elliot bass amplifier sound of the late 80's and early 90's (I have an old-school Trace Elliot head with matching 1x15" and 2x10" cabinets for gigs and recording sessions, as well as an ELF head with matching 1x10" and 2x8" cabinets for home practice and small gigs) but I would love to get my hands on a Darkglass Alpha·Omega 900 Bass Head (or the Microtubes 900v2 Bass Head) as I feel those have great potential for good clean tone without the "famous" drive circuits engaged, but I can't just take a chance and buy one for 1200 Euro and ending up not liking it, because those can be kinda hard to sell on the used market without losing too much of what you've originally paid. MarkBass is also making amps that sound REALLY good and modern, but again - the price range is kinda far out there for my budget. Would you perhaps have any tips for other bass amp brands with that kind of modern tone "on a budget"?

      @@jasondorsey7110 I used to run the ELF head with an EBS 1x10" cabinet, but to my ears the dedicated ELF cabs sound better.

  • @rome8180
    @rome8180 Год назад +1

    I'm sure you're aware, but the Ampeg PF-50T and PF-20T are also tube amps that can be played without a load. They're pretty comparable price-wise, with the PF-50T actually being cheaper than the Ashdown and the PF-50T being slightly more expensive. Since you have a vintage fliptop, you might like these. They're essentially the modern reissue of the B-15, but they can be used as a DI without a cabinet. They also have way more clean headroom than the Ashdown.
    Point being, I'm not sure you can call this a "game changer" when Ampeg already did it.

      @philipconradmusic  Год назад +2

      Hi Rome! Good insight here. Yes, the Ampeg version is cool. I’d love to do a blind shootout between the two; my guess is the Ashdown would be more versatile with its character (why I believe it’s unique), but I haven’t had the opportunity to put them against each other yet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching my video; so glad to have you here!
