  • I couldn't sleep right ever since I uploaded that explaining chemistry for electricity video, because I didn't go in depth far enough, so here's a quickly made video about bonds... I should also clarify that whilst ScrapScience helped me with the explaining chemistry for electricity, I did NOT make this video with harry, so if anything here is wrong, blame me

    sigma bond 🗿
    when my teacher says that i cannot stop thinking in brainrot.
    the sigma bond inded it's because it's formed between s orbitals (π and Δ are named for that too) but they are not the only ones forming them. The sigma bond in Cl2 for example it's between 2 p orbitals overlapping frontally, then, having the same rotational simmetry as a s-s sigma bond.
    d orbitals can also make σ bonds and π bonds. What defines the σ, π or Δ bond it's the simmetry, how they overlap.

      I was wondering the same thing, because electrons make just as many full periods of a wave around the nucleus in one full orbit as their principal quantum number, so naturally the second shell looks like a peanut because it's electron needs to dip up and down twice in a revolution, but since the peanut shaped cloud is made up of the same number of electrons as the spherical first shell, then that means it's probably longer, but then that'd mean sigma bonds can no longer form because the second shell would always be in the way for taking the place as the first bond! So of course all shells must be capable of sigma overlap, otherwise the structure of methane(CH4) and a lot of molecules would no longer make sense with existing models!

      My teacher felt bad for me when I actually asked such a question 😅. He showed me like 10 - 15 examples and showed s is not σ, p is not π and d is not δ. I even asked the equivalent bond for the f orbital. He said enough of your dumb thinking and go study.
      Now I am kind of getting the doubt because the discussion is going on. Is there really an equivalent bond of f orbitals? Like a φ bond? (Seriously that’s the only letter I could come up with for the F or Ph sound….)

    Another comment - a way to escape the "particles are balls" idea when explaining it is to ask the question "are these particles touching"? When understanding that "touching" means "to affect the position of", then "touching" just means "interacting". So the question of "are these two particles touching" when they are next to each-other is "they are are already touching, because they are interacting". This, I hope, will sell the idea that the concept of size breaks down even at large scales.

    The video is really good but you forgot to say that in an ionic bond the positive ion pulls towards itself the electrons from the negative ion so you have a bit of covalent character. Also you oversimplified metallic bonding, It can be veiwed as delocalised covalent bonding because positive metallic ions will still pull electeons towards their orbitals. Also forgot dative bonding

    • @Sem2942UwU
      @Sem2942UwU 2 месяца назад

      Also, I have a small suggestion (if you are ever thinking of doing that). Try Maharashtra 12th chemistry textbook chapter one (you can easily find it's pdf with 1 google search, first result.) Because you are literally sooooo good with render and visualization of these things. Chapter one is literally filled with so much need for visual interpretation, I am struggling to imagine it while studying. I bet that chapter alone has 30 diagrams, its trying to describe 3D spacial things on a 2d book page.
