I would have left the original drive in there, easier to clone (no need for an external bay) and then used it as a secondary drive after deleting the partitions. Actually I take that back. I would have left it exactly as it is with the OS and apps as they were, and simply added the new drive for my data

All laptops thermal throttle at one point or another.. performance isn’t too bad on this model.
