  • Let me know which speaker you find the better speaker in the comments below! Two absolutely prestigious brands going head-to-head to find out if the lesser priced Canton Vento 896.2 DC ($4000ish/pair) can hang with the KEF R11s ($6000/pair) or does the KEF's blow it out of the water. It's not often we see KEF and Canton in the same room, so I decided to take advantage of it! OH, by the way, the Canton's are still for sale! $2500 for the pair! Thank you for making this comparison. That's why i follow you and will continue to follow even if you don't have cantons anymore. I like the content. These Kef are nice speakers. They could be miles better for sure. Same goes for the cantons. The should have bypass capacitors to enhance the depth even further. What I like about the Kef, it sounds a tad sweeter in the higher midrange. It sounds like the kef has a little more resonance on some music parts (could be because of the mic) but the canton ceramic tweeter runs rounds around the aluminium tweeters of Kef. I think this is due to lower crossover parts (capacitor mundorf and bypass with Teflon will enhance depth and clarity lots) all in all what doyou think. I still think the canton chassis are more artistic and mitigate resonance issues(standing waves) ofcourse Kef had its own internal design. Conclusive: both are excellent speakers. I don't think the kef are worth the extra price. But new adventures are always good for the channel and pleases the mind. enjoy the kef speakers. Looking forward too the center placement video.

Both really are great speakers, Kef is more laid back and neutral. Canton more dynamic and detailed. Really has more to do with your room, gear, and preference. I’ve had both in my house as a demo and I went the other way a kept the vento 896.2. I still really liked the r11 but they didn’t give me that realistic sound of dynamic swings I was looking for. Almost like Kef decided to round of these dynamic swings to make a more polite speaker. All that being said I’d be proud to own both.

I upgraded my speakers just under 2 years ago. When I’m spending vast quantities of my hard earned cash, I don’t rush my purchasing decision. I auditioned dozens of speakers. Had multiple listening sessions at numerous dealers. I auditioned, ATCSCM50. Sonus, pioneer. Kef R11. PNC. Monitor Audio. Spender Etc.
The speakers I took home with me were the Kef R11. They had excellent tonality at low volume.you can drive then hard without distortion. Despite their size, they image well. The bass is authorative, smooth and precise. They represent high value and performance. They’re not perfect, nothing is! The mid-range is a tad lean and the top end could benefit from greater presence. But I have no purchase regret.

I may have missed it, but does the R11 image well enough in your room, where you can effectively run a phantom center? KEFs are imaging monsters and should create a pinpoint center image.
But I know you mentioned you ended up getting a center anyway because you just missed it.
Could you make a video comparison for phantom center vs "non ideal" center placement?

I have to say that I noticed that the KEF’s sounded fuller than the Cantons I only noticed when I closed my eyes and opened them when I heard a noticeable difference in the sound and of course I don’t know what either speakers sound like but they were different and I thought the Canton’s had a stronger response in the highs but they were just a bit brighter than the KEF but I will probably never know what each of them really sound like but from my thoughts I think the KEFs are better, Here’s a thought, I think I would keep the Cantons for the Surround Side and they are close to Timbre match that they may give you a much better Theater setup. But thanks for sharing this review with us and keep them coming.

Tha Canton's had more snap to them during playback of the movie. The Kef's sound more airy to me. That's probably due to the efficiency of the speakers. The classical music sounded fantastic with the Kef's and I see why you love them alot-Besides, being your new hobby toys😁😁. When I first subscribed to your channel years ago, it was all about your beautiful Polk audio setup. My, my, my, have things changed.
Thousands of dollars later and your budget have increased to some Kef's🙂🙂. This is a very expensive hobby. It always seems like we're all upgrading. I'm currently still tweaking my new 4 SB 3000's, to blend well with my 6, Ultra Towers and Ultra center. The 4, subs are shaking the house. Especially, coming from SB 2000's.
I started my journey from a Samsung (touch of color) box and one, to a 5.1 Andrew Jones setup. Then I upgraded everything to a 7.4.4 Andrew Jones Pioneer elite setup. I replaced the pioneer elite center with an Ultra center and I never looked back. My journey started in an apartment 2017/2018ish. Now my theater is in a house with a 24 feet by 26 feet room with tile floors and a huge area rug. When you buy your house I'm sure your setup will change again. The crazy thing is. I still have all my speakers except for the SB 2000'S because of the upgrade program ofcourse, and the Samsung box and 1. I ended up donating that to a secondhand store "AMVETS". I still have 2 Andrew Jones 10 inch down firing subwoofers packed up in their boxes. I have a 2 channel setup with 2 of the Pioneer Elite towers. These towers have perfect imaging for a phantom speaker. I typed all this just to tell you how proud I am for you, and for allowing myself and others to witness your home theater and audiophilec journey. Congrats on your new endeavors.

Ok so I own the 896,2 and have not heard the R11 but i had a lot of work to figger out the best placement for my speakers and use them in my listning room. I come up with tilting them up a bit to make them sound better. Placing them of axis almost straight forward. It is really hard to set up speakers (I think). The fact that you played the speakers at different locations in the room is not ideal either! In your video the K11 sound better I think, anyway I´m not sure you got the best sound out of your Cantons cos they are proberbly harder to set up right. The Kef wins hands down for me. The positioning was more of a disadvantage for the Kef, because the Cantons were in front of the R11s causing a near (strong) reflection which muddies the sound. I get it, it's a lot of work moving speakers to do comparison and I am sure you realize that speakers need room to breath to sound their best, but if anyone thinks the Cantons were at a disadvantage due to narrower spacing, they have never set up two tower speakers side by side with one in front of the other, causing a nasty first reflection which drastically muddies the sound.

Hi am here listening to your video on my KEF R11. The canton sound V shaped by comparison. The mic used in recording this video is certainly not good enough to capture the sound of either of these speakers in my opinion. Of course your room and setup will ultimately determine what your ears hear. In my experience the kefs are very linear and respond well to EQ so it is easy to get the sound you like from these speakers provided you are able to get the best out of your room correction and DSP. BTW I also have R3 and R2C. The R3 for rears is a bit overkill but holy moly surround sound transitions.....you will see for yourself soon enough. Best of luck.

I think it might not be fair to test a $6k speaker against a $4k speaker. As you could get Canton reference 8k speakers (pair) for $5k and for$7k you could get the Canton Ref 7k speakers (pair). The 8k’s have 6” woofers, 7k’s have 6.8” woofers. Either are far better speakers than the Vento’s. Low volume listening is likely going to be better w/ Kefs as they are a forward and bright as compared to the Cantons. I prefer a warmer sound and I am primarily a HT guy, with some audiophile tendencies. Can’t fault your choice for the Kef’s though if you are staying in that small apt, I’d advise getting smaller subs that you can actually push in your space. Small room and big subs is like a small carburetor on a big engine, you will never get the best out of them as they can’t breathe. Just something to think about. Appreciate your review.

I bought the main speakers at this price from my local hifi dealer, where I bought my first 5.1 set 20 years ago and wait for the price to drop more for center and rear. The 896-set has the top center at 500 and the rears at 400 EUR, so I’ll wait for this price point for the best center for my generation of ventos. Music is the main concern, my 20 year old focal chorus do not cut it, while they’re good enough for home cinema until then. Someday I will upgrade to atmos, but they do not need to be the same generation.
At this time a marantz 8000 series from today will be more affordable. For me, Hifi does not need to be the newest line. They need to deliver what I want, nothing more. For bi-amping the mains and dolby atmos I need at least 9 channels. There are used top line onkyos for 500 EUR or older line but new 1400 EUR marantz that do the job even now.
Maybe airplay 3 or the newest fire tv will include high res audio by then. we‘ll see.
But I will buy subwoofers from a different company that have an actual punch. It seems that the canton for the ventos do not deliver enough. Would you agree to that? I have seen them clipping and being a bit slow. Or am I wrong?
All in all I plan to stay within 4000 EUR, while the same set bought new including the newest marantz would have been at 11000 EUR. Canton still charges 9000 EUR for the speaker set alone, while the market price is already at 5200 EUR. I‘ll wait for the price drop, the difference easily affords a decent three week holiday :)

It's rather shocking that a speaker that is more than double the price of the Vento doesn't actually clearly beat it, just shows how great the Vento line was when it got introduced.
