I made that trip in 1990 in a Isuzu van with my wife and 2 year old Daughter. The trip of a lifetime busted a radiator hose in Coopers creek that was scary. Luckily there was a military convoy on the road. Their mechanics stopped and were able to do a makeshift repair for me. I have memories that will last a lifetime.
Neil Fraser-Smith I have a Framed Photo of Jack which I took at the Caravan and Camping Show at the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne in 1989! Treasure it so much!😂🤠🚘🏜️🐪🦅🖼️🎨🖌️
This bloke is taking a 2 wheel drive car where most people worry about taking a 4x4. Good onya Jack. I"ll never forget how to pull start a car thanks to you, and has got me out of trouble on more than one occasion.
I just had to share this as well . . . it was sooo interesting, and I truly enjoyed every minute of it, and was glad to have it a great, full-length, video, instead of only five or ten minutes long!! So many wonderful hints, a lot of history and stories . . . and beautiful scenery! Love his paintings, too!! Thank you, Jack Absalom!! Carol Florida U.S.A.
Jack's soundtracks during the ocean fossil scene take me deep far off to the unknown a mix of lonely sad excited and memories of the love euphoria and passion I had for a long ago girl friend I wanted to put a ring on when we once walked the beach at night holding hands and kissing the night away while the waves broke...what a mate...no wonder an artist could paint there. God bless you mate
These days you'd "need" a bullbar, lifted 4wd, mud terrain tyres, 690 lights, 2 uhfs, 4 antennas, a VHF, a sat phone, a phone signal amplifier, storage drawers, air compressor, tools, spare parts, fluids, a fridge, a rooftop rent, a snorkel, diff locks, awnings, a chip and exhaust system, a dedicated navigation system and of course a portable shower or even a 90k caravan. This shows it's all 70% marketing, 20% fear mongering and 10% common sense and comfort.
Absolutely brilliant. Especially when he lights a fire with stealo and jumper cables, then puts it out with a can of beer! I needed a good laugh too. Thanks, Jack. Now for the next video...
Out of all the outback guys on TV, Jack was and still is my favorite. There is something about that generation of people, very practical and down to earth.
he was the reason i took my family to birdsville track,Oodnadatta track, Coober Pedy, Ayers rock and more in 1987. The kids were very young but still remember it.
Thanks for posting. We used the Jack Absalom vids in part for a trip out west in about 1990. From Brisbane out to Noccundra and corner country through Strzelecki Desert and Strzelecki Track to Innamincka. Great vids. Entertaining and informative. I like Russel Coight too but that's a whole different kettle of fish. :)
When I find out he passed away on 22nd March 2019 it's make me feel so sad but in Iranian calendar 22nd March is first day of spring and first day of new year. And it's means reborn in Iranian calendar
Jack proves that if you drive carefully and are aware of the surroundings you don't need 4WD. 4WD only came available in Australia in the late '40's after WW2, blokes had been crossing Australia in 2WD Leylands and Ford for decades before. Makes me laugh these days when I drive up to Wilpena in the Flinders, all the Disco's, X5's, Cayenne's etc parked outside the 'visitors interpretive centre' with there owners sucking lattes in the cafe, it's a bitumen road all the way there, I have driven a 1984 Toyota Corolla up there.
By cooking a roast beef and potatoes in the camp oven for tea, just enough for one person, that’s plenty to have for the next day, it would be enough to feed a family in one meal.
It seems amazing to think about Australia having some of the biggest fossil reserves in the world, you might be amazed where you can go to find these fossil reserves.
Is this guy for real? Russell Coight take a back seat. Amazing how that pile of salt bush he set fire to with his jex moved a good metre away from it's original spot where the whole damn sigma would have gone up in smoke. Well done Russell! This amazing Sigma should be in a museum. Thank god Russell, sorry I mean Jack, had the worlds most amazing shitbox sigma that was unstoppable, even the Cobblers sandhills were no match for the sigma. Thank god for Russell that the mother eagle didn't latch on to his rather sizeable backside as he awkwardly clambered up the dead tree for his intrusive gawk. Sorry but I have a stitch from laughing so loud at this living legend.
+Josh mcevoy I spent my childhood driving around inland Australia (learnt to drive at 12yoa) in stock standard cars (XW Falcon station wagon and ute). Its no different today except the cars are plastic and crap. give me a 1970 Ford or Holden any day.
He is no Malcolm Douglas not even in the same league as Malcolm but he has the dreaming spirit and sees things us armchair viewers can only imagine.....
This is what should be on tv , not the garbage they air now, R.I.P Jack, Aussie legend.

@Henrich Muller Yes I carried some tools and spares but not the hose that burst. hindsight is a great man.
Jack passed away on 22 March 2019 in hospital at Broken Hill. He was 91.

Neil Fraser-Smith. Yeah, sad. He was a bloody legend.. I wish there was another person like him!!
The word 'legend' is overused, but this bloke fully deserves the title.
He makes owning a Sigma wagon look cool
That's the best comment of 2021🤣
This bloke is taking a 2 wheel drive car where most people worry about taking a 4x4. Good onya Jack. I"ll never forget how to pull start a car thanks to you, and has got me out of trouble on more than one occasion.
Jack is a living legend, and while folks are getting bogged in their 4x4s ,he does it in a 1982/3 Mitsubishi Sigma Station Wagon.

Attitudes have changed, it's prudent to have the right stuff. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
And 5 million amps of lithium for the A/C and coffee machine
Agree!
Your on the money
Absolutely brilliant. Especially when he lights a fire with stealo and jumper cables, then puts it out with a can of beer! I needed a good laugh too. Thanks, Jack. Now for the next video...
Our teacher used to play his videos in class in the 80's. We all lost a great man in Mr Absolom. RIP Jack.

The soundtrack is so retro, I like it.

I grew up watching Jack, he is a legend!!!!! Go the old Sigma
Jack your a legend no doubt in my mind you really are
He was cool. An amazing gentleman
Please, someone, drive this track in a current model Mitsubishi 2WD station wagon and see if it can be done.
top series Jack we have met before
Its amazing how much some of these locations have changed since this was filmed. This trip is now easily crossable with any type of road car.
Hi so this road can be done in SUV now -?
@@simonheming2842 yep, unfortunately. The roads are heaps better there now.
@@dkelly6492 Yes i notice that the outback is getting unfortunately smaller
I've been out there.
It hot 🔥 and bleak.
Visited his shop too.
Just found Jack. As much fun as Les Hiddin. Really great.
I agree both Excellent
When I find out he passed away on 22nd March 2019 it's make me feel so sad but in Iranian calendar 22nd March is first day of spring and first day of new year. And it's means reborn in Iranian calendar

Cool story 👍
His crew had large 4wds
The Cobbler Sandhills look difficult to get through, would be the most challenging part of the track,
Great bloke
By cooking a roast beef and potatoes in the camp oven for tea, just enough for one person, that’s plenty to have for the next day, it would be enough to feed a family in one meal.
Thats an enormous roast meal for one bloke!....
yeah nah mate. Standard roast for a man with Balls that big.
Camera crew too
Just wondering, with modern engines, is putting a cup of metho in the tank a good idea still?
yep with petrol
It seems amazing to think about Australia having some of the biggest fossil reserves in the world, you might be amazed where you can go to find these fossil reserves.
Amazing that he takes his 1980s 2WD Mitsubishi thru the sand dunes and doesn't get bogged! What a legend.
He gets bogged, just smart enough to not get stuck!
He had a camera crew!
Some day i would to be there...Perú
on that bob ross level painting legend
Wow the old sigma wagon, I bet Jack didn't hang on to that to long..... Legend Jack RIP
I’ve realised that Jack had a 60 series land cruiser back up vehicle
RIP Jack.
The Cobbler Sandhills look tough to drive through.
...when I run out i don't what i will watch..
Robcop Westton watch 'banged up abroad'
Legend
For me, half metho and half vegetable oil is a dessert wine 😊
I love how Jack's mate got cut off at 43:10 as he was about to respond hahahahahaha
My sigma couldn't make it to the shop.
The Floyd of the Bush Fantastic
He's like the Australian outdoor version of Bob Ross.
+Cleastwould That's quite an insult....
Who is Bob Ross?
And American painter who had his own tv show in the 80s apparently.
👍
35:14 Little bit of Thalo blue.............wherever you want it, wherever...... just like at. There.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆LEGEND ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
What a car Mitsubishi sigma why do they not make them like that any more
I want a sigma wagon
What synth are they using for the soundtrack?

iiiiinnn the australia
31:48 You can't get Methylated Spirit anymore. Only Isopropanol which is much more expensive.
No 4wd? This guy has nuts the size of avocado's.
+Josh mcevoy Don't need a 4WD out there. It's only an unsealed road. The old Mitsubishi Sigma was a rugged, reliable vehicle as well.
+Josh mcevoy I spent my childhood driving around inland Australia (learnt to drive at 12yoa) in stock standard cars (XW Falcon station wagon and ute). Its no different today except the cars are plastic and crap. give me a 1970 Ford or Holden any day.
The Leyland's did it in a combi....
flashie70 old valiants were the only cars that lasted in Mintabie I was told.

27:21 maybe if he could have taken that runty bird n handed it in at the next town Wires my child eh .🐦🐦🐦
Who needs a 150k landcruiser when you have a sigma
He is no Malcolm Douglas not even in the same league as Malcolm but he has the dreaming spirit and sees things us armchair viewers can only imagine.....
Those guys you mentioned with..Harry Butler along with the Leyland family just got on with it ..not like today
15:40 "taste like champagne". Distilled water out of a plastic bag? Um........Only if you were mighty thirsty!
