Late to the show but as to the "why turtle hearts?" thing: They were using isolated turtle heart -cells-. The only commercially available turtle cell line is from species T. carolina and the cells were originally isolated from the heart. So now a lot of experiments that are done in vitro on turtles use this established cell line.

As a European, I find it sad that Americans can't appreciate all their cool animals, like cougars, giant salamanders, turkeys, opossums, and raccoons more.
Meanwhile, Sweden has no exotic wild animal species you wouldn't also find all over North Asia or America and the few things living in the Baltic sea are all smaller thanks to the freezing brackish water.

Their teeth were amazing to me, though I did have the good sense not to stick my finger in the water with them! Had no idea their eggs were poisonous OR that they could breathe air, but learning that now explains why they kept popping up to the top of our bucket. Awwwh, you missed my favorite family of air-breathing fish, the Bichirs (bee-shure). They're relatively anatomically unchanged from the time when Africa and South America were still fused, make interesting pets, and have actually been successfully raised in moist terrestrial lab settings (on land, no water submersion) to demonstrate a possible model as to how fish could venture into being terrestrial. I love these "dinosaur eels" so much.

@@AlleyTrashBoards you're welcome! I'm personally interested in animal conservation, and I know that the gar, especially the alligator gar, is misjudged based on its appearance and suffers from it--they are slow to reach sexual maturity, so killing one is quite a blow to the breeding population when you have a gigantic fish that lives for 50 years. But these men had their faces right next to their mouth full of teeth, and not once did the fish even try to bite them. The only major movement was from the fish gulping in air. They're actually pretty fascinating animals.

@@limalicious you are a gentleman and a scholar. Ocean conservation is the reason I don’t eat seafood. I was vegan for a while, but now I eat small amounts of sustainably sourced meat. They can move their gill plates like you see them doing constantly, that pumps water through the gills. The fish that you talk about which need to keep moving to breath are mostly Cartilaginous fish like sharks, it is called ram ventilation.

Gar is often considered a "garbage fish" meaning its gross to eat, but many people down here in the south eat gar. There are methods that start with how you dispatch and clean the fish, then how you cook it and season it. I know many people around here that can make gar delicious and you would never know you were eating a "trash fish".

This explains how you can find gigantic gar down here in Mississippi in some of the nastiest stagnant bodies of water.
Some of the reservoirs here will close their spillways in the summer which leads the river the dam drains to drying up for a mile or two just behind the spillway. This leaves fish high and dry and they quickly die. Not gar though. I have seen them survive for days out of the water if they can fine a shade spot out of the sun.

You should do a video, if u haven't already, on Arapaima, or Pirarucu (how we locals call it). It's a huge fish, bigger than the alligator gar and it's also known to emerge from the waters to breathe.

Genuine question! Hopefully someone can answer I havent found it googling. I thought the Air Bladder in Gar and Arrowana was separate from their buoyancy Swim Bladder o: Are there 2 different organs with different functions or does their Swim Bladder work to serve both functions for breathing and buoyancy? 💗 loving the friendliness and curiosity in the comment sections on these videos! Hope everybody is having a good day!

Bizarre Beasts, there are plenty of Air breathing fish in the aquarium trade. Siamese Fighting fish ( bettas they are called)_ and corys (the cutest bottom feeders ) are two examples. They have to come up to surface about every 15 to 30 mins to take a breath of air to augment the oxygen in their systems.
