It's nice to see how far you have come, I just remembered how insecure you sounded in some of your older videos. And now look at you! No nervosity, clear editing, a strong voice and even some funny parts :) Well done Jeremy, now I fancy this darn machine... I would like to buy it, but Microtonic is simply not worth it for me at the moment. What about the rumors about the limited polyphony though? I thought the Tonic is going to have 16 notes of polyphony, but in some discussion panels people claim that the Tonic only sports 4 note polyphony? Thank you for clearing this up :P
Huh! I haven't heard about the polyphony thing! Butttt, if you think about it makes sense. In the video I go over "choke groups", which means you can't have more than one of the pads in a 4 verticle group playing at once. That means, yes, only 4 polyphony, I guess.
True, but you do know that’s the write-protect tab, right? Break it off and basically you can only listen and never make edits. (And also, you can’t undo this.)
Why isn't there something like a Pocket Operator cartoon music video, where all the crazy ways of sound visualization come together? Would be a pretty fucked up movie probably xD

Megaman is my favorite still that high lead one with the delay I think it's sound no 7? Is incredible. The fun part is the limitations of the scale you are on. So you can't just feel it out and improv and expect to be able to hit whatever. Half steps are missing all over the place lol.
I have the volca Sampler and the Electribe Sampler Mk 2. I still want this. All the Pocket Operators have different dynamics that the aforementioned don't. I have 3 PO's. ❤❤❤
I have not. I don't own an Electribe, and I generally don't see a reason for me personally to sync it to the OP-1. I understand it's totally possible, though!
6:47 I am completely hung up on this. I'm trying very seriously to follow this tutorial and this step just doesn't work at all. I've done the exact steps you have - press play, hold sound and click an active track, hold down write and twist the knobs - and I'm getting no changes to the sound whatsoever. Are there situations where this doesn't work, or is mine broken?
I had to delete my pattern and start from scratch. I suspect the problem was that I had already manually configured the paraneheters for some of the individual beats and for some reason that invalidated me trying to use this method on every single track. fucked up
Hey there! Great video :D Maybe I got something wrong but accent + sound isnt really a mute button. If you press the sound he play the sound once with accent and then the choke happens. Great Pocket Operator though
it looks awesome but I am a little confused at what's happening at 6:00 ... he wants to select 1 sound, and then proceeds to press everybutton on the pad... and only 1 sound appears, maybe it's the language barier but I consider myself decent in english so I don't think I'm really missing something... I just think it's weird, can somebody explain?
That horse head woman scared the HELL out of me ! got minez for work ( they won't leave you alone If you have any thing other then an iPad ) got to be pound 4 pound the best groove box - had no idea
If I’m looking for a drum oriented PO to add to an arcade and a robot, would you recommend the tonic (without the vst) or the rhythm? What are the strengths of each one as a drum machine?
Hey Jeremy, I stumbled across your channel while I was looking at some trippy synthalicious tunes and I love what your doing man! You've convinced me to bite the bullet and finally buy myself my first wee synth machine and give it a go! So my question is, I was thinking of losing my synth virginity to the po-32, I like the seemingly all roundedness of this one compared to the others? But I thought I'd ask a pro before pulling the trigger
Red Means Recording honestly I probably won't be investing in MicroTonic. Would you say then its kind of redundant getting the po32? I see you really like th arcade and robot PO's,I really just want one that will give me most flexibility in creating the fullest possible tracks or sounds.
The only slight disappointment I had with this device is that the pattern chain maxes out at 64 which, don't get me wrong, is still better than the 16 limit that the first gen had but not as long as the 128 that the second gen POs had. 64 seems like plenty and for straight up grooves it is quite a lot but I found it to tap out when trying to do a full song's worth of variations. Anyways, only minor gripe because this unit had less pattern chain length than the 3 PO's that came before it. BUT... They are working with such a small amount of processing power and memory though so it's honestly astounding what this drum machine is capable of for its size. If the Tonic came in a larger box and had multiple outputs and midi, it would be a $700 machine. And it would be worth it. Nice video. Well explained.
I would love a big-boy Tonic. That would be amazing. Have you watched Cuckoo's video with Magnus about how he made the PO-32? His explanation of the processing limitations was really interesting, and explains why some corners were (barely) cut.
Hey Jeremy weird question -- where did you get the cutting mat you're shooting on top of? Mine is shot and I'm looking for a new neutral dark one like that :P Thanks for the great videos!
I want to make dark/deep techno and would like to use one of the POs either Tonic or Rhytm. Which one would you recommend me that would fit the style with its sound palette? Considering that I wont use Microtonic.
Neither is going to get you a very large tonal palette, honestly. I would recommend the PO-32 if you were going to get Microtonic, but without it you're just going to have the stock sounds. I think the PO-32 is more "techno" than the PO-12, but you're going to want to pair either one with at least something making bass sounds.

I was thinking of the sub but I heard it's pretty limited compared to the robot? or should I get the tonic first?
thanks! I'll keep that in mind. in your opinion though, which one is the best as a standalone? it might take a while (months, probably) for me to get a second one. and although they're all cheap, tonic's more expensive than the others, I think?
hmm. now I'm torn between robot and factory. and sub. so in all of these, you can record a drum sequence, then put/record melody (or is it bass?) over it, then put another melody on top of it? or can you only put two layers and one live?
Red Means Recording the tab on the the left of the screen can be broken off to write protect all the patterns permanently. I only was able to figure that out from reading the user guides
Thanks for the replies man, ever since I saw your last op-1 video on reddit, I've been studying synths nonstop and have decided to try doing my game soundtrack on my own. Are the pads easy to press down on these? I'm looking to get one to start with and am looking at the sub, arcade, and the tonic to test the waters
Yes, the pads are easy to press down. I think if you really want to do game soundtrack stuff you might want to look into software. It will be infinitely more easy to create complex melodies and actual songs. There are many plugins and packs available to make those classic NES / SEGA sounds.
I'd say Tonic, Sub & Robot You're gonna want the bass that the Sub can add to round out your grooves and the Rhythm is great but the Tonic is just a bit better and more versatile.
Robot is the best. you have three channels of sound, meaning you can have a basic drum track, a sequenced pattern, and live play on top of it. I found you can make fleshed out songs with it just by itself. if you're buying more than one I would say arcade + robot is a very good pairing; rhythm is good with everything; factory and sub are okay but a bit harsh sounding (and limited to 16 pattern chaining - the robot can do 128); and office I would just avoid.
theycallmejpj I've seen a lot of people doing robot - arcade jams and that is the sound that got me interested in poket operator's, I'm just not sure about how much drums I could have (if that makes any sense )
If you plan on getting Microtonic, PO-32 all the way. If you don't it tougher. I like the effects in the PO-32 better, but the PO-12 is nice and solid too.
I'm disappointed to realize after buying the Tonic that Microtonic is another $100. I assumed it was free software--should've confirmed. I also assumed Tonic had more than one bank of sounds... Is it worth buying Microtonic if I'm only going to edit Tonic sounds with it?
just a question: i would buy the po 20 arcade, i like it for its samples, but then i found all the samples ripped from a po 20 and ready to be imported on the po 32. So my question is: should i buy the po 20? or should i buy the po 32 importing the arcade samples? In this last option i could also import different sounds of other musical styles i like, this is why it sounds goods to me. Which would be the difference from a po 20 arcade and a po 32 with arcade sounds imported? maybe could i lose some features in the second option? thanks!
ok so if i'll transfer the same sounds to the po 32 which will be the difference? only the interface? i don't aleady get the po 20 because it seems pretty limited if compared to the po 32, or not?
That's a neat device. I've got no clue about anything musical but you really explained it well! What's the point in the display surely something functional would be more useful?
you can get yourself an intro synthesizer (korg volca or electribe or microkorg) and play with that on it's own. you can pair it with a DAW (Ableton, FLStudio, Reaper) for recording. Or you can go full DAW and learn that way.
RUclips is full of lessons, I think. You either start messing around and learn as you go, or pick something and figure it out more surgically. Copying songs you like is a great way to learn.
I have forsaken all other hobbies in the pursuit of pocket operator collecting.
yea! my operators are also on the way! can`t wait!!!
Can anyone tell me the difference between the different pocket operators and how many of them there is?

ok so if i'll transfer the same sounds to the po 32 which will be the difference? only the interface? i don't aleady get the po 20 because it seems pretty limited if compared to the po 32, or not?
the po-20 has controls for chords and transposition and specific effects that are unique to it
you will not have those on the po-32
ok thanks for the explanation :)
hahahaha at 8:25. Your tutorials are awesome.
Pretty much this and the K.O. And any other one and you’re set
That's a neat device. I've got no clue about anything musical but you really explained it well! What's the point in the display surely something functional would be more useful?
The company that makes it is as much about design as they are function. Most of their UI is in some way obfuscated or strange, but always engaging.
what is the closest one to this? i can't find this one in my country but i can find the other ones so i need a little advice here
+Tahsin Kökver the rhythm one!
thanks :)
Awesome. Can you copy between pattern banks (or something similar) ?
Sure can.
teenage.engineering/guides/po-32/en
hold write + pattern and press 1-16 to paste the active pattern to the corresponding new slot.
I see. Yeah I guess you can easily save a pattern into two slots (and edit from their). Cheers for the link.
hey, is the break away lock tab a button that can be used whenever ?
im not really sure, sorry
or whats it`s function ? : 3
What's the range of sounds you can put on this? Could you put piano or guitar sounds?
You can put whatever you can make using Microtonic.
so this just holds 16 sounds at once? it doesnt have banks like the KO?
This is a great advertisement
you're a great advertisement
Thejosiphas lol
If I'm interested in what you do (synthesizers etc) where do you recommend to start at?
what aspects of it are you interested in?
The music recording and experimentation portion of it looks fun.
you can get yourself an intro synthesizer (korg volca or electribe or microkorg) and play with that on it's own. you can pair it with a DAW (Ableton, FLStudio, Reaper) for recording. Or you can go full DAW and learn that way.
Cool. Any lessons are recommended like music lessons or I can just play around with it?
RUclips is full of lessons, I think. You either start messing around and learn as you go, or pick something and figure it out more surgically. Copying songs you like is a great way to learn.
isn't there a sampler on it? why didn't you demo it?
Because there isn't one
ok...what's that little mic do then?
Preset transfer.
How about having every Pocket operator build into a cube !
Maximilian Bernhardt you can't make a cube with rectangles...
But you can make a rectangle with cubes
> Maximilian Bernhardt you can't make a cube with rectangles...
yes you can (within reasonable precision), and its edge will be equal to LCM(l,w,h)
Crazy how tedious you are, i'd like to not expose my dumbness but rather an idea... thank you all for being so open minded
