Our small front lawn looks like it's just moss that's on it, no grass :) It gets very little if any sunshine at all. Thanks to your videos I now realise why. I was going to get some people in to replace the whole lawn with new turf but as I'm now retired I figure I may as well try and restore it myself. A new lawn would cost money so I thought I'd use that money instead and get the necessary tools to have a go. Maybe I'm flogging a dead horse with it but it'll be fun to try. I have an electric scarifier, a non-clog step tool aerator and some grass seeds coming tomorrow so as soon as the time is right I'll be out there. Thanks for your professional advice, much appreciated. I've subbed and will keep watching :)

Now then? I'm in the process of sorting my quarter of an acre lawn, been following your advice so here is my question, I have been scarifying (first job) so far I reckon I have ten builders dumpy bags of thatch and moss, down at the pub I have been told I could sell it to garden centres for hanging baskets, I've not done this as yet but what do you do with all that garden waste you get. Perhaps a video!
@@LawnRight I live out in the sticks, been told there are buyers out here, next time I might give them a try and let you know, could be a little earner!
Hey Shaun! Still loving your videos! Would you say it’s currently to dry/hot to scarify my lawn? My lawn is starting to really dry up should I be watering every evening? Thanks Jon
Hi Jon if you're going to scarify water heavily daily in the mornings for a few weeks till its fully recovered. I'd avoid evening watering where possible
Hello and thank you for another informative video. I am in the US and our lawn has weeds and crab grass. What crab grass killer do you prefer? Do I want to treat the weeds and crab grass before the ground temp is 54°? Then do the aerating and scarifying? Thank you for sharing... take care 🙏
Hi. So crabgrass does well between 80 and 90f.. Scott's spot weed control for lawns can be used later in the year when its growing. You may want to look to do a pre emergent asap though to prevent new seeds germinating.. prodiamine barricade is worth looking at.. then give it a couple of weeks before aerating and scarifying.. good luck!
@@LawnRight thank you as always... is the prodiamine barricade for the crab grass to prevent germination? What do you suggest using over the rest of the lawn to prevent weeds?
Ummm Im not entirely sure.. Id say the species determines how happy a plant is at different cut heights.. eg a bent grass can tolerate down to maybe 4 or 5mm in height where other types prefer a higher cut.. usually as with any plant, bigger roots means more nutrient and water requirements
Cheers Bobby! They're decent for the money. You can spend £2500 on a camon, or £79 for a screwfix lightweight model, but this sits around the £500 ish price. It's good for almost all lawns but it's not as powerful as a camon, however it's a lot quieter! Still its served me well now and I've got 2
You could but it's not essential to do either as we are so close to spring.. you could just hang back a few weeks keep it watered and spring feed in a month or so
Would you recommend a hollow tine or spiked areator for a 2000sqm lawn? I would say half of it is lost to moss now because of how much water the ground holds from years of ride on mowers going over it
Hi Liam anything's better than nothing.. hollow crimes do help relieve compaction but then theres the clear up... the thought of clearing up 2000 sq metres of cores isnt something I'd relish..unless its sandy soil then I'd just leave the cores on.. you could just leave the cores on and eventually they would break down.. if you're gonna scarify after then the scarifier would chomp up some cores. I take it youre gonna use a tow behind aerator for the ride on?
@@LawnRight Yeah will be picking up a tow behind as I'm not exactly looking forward to it either! The soil is quite loamy/clay where we are so it'll be clearing up the cores after unfortunately! If I don't the dogs will think I've bought them thousands of muck pellet toys to enjoy!

❤ great video loved your experience knowledge and simple to follow instructions. I use a billy goat vacuum to pick up all the thatch done in minutes .
Man, I used my scarifier and filled a bin with the moss and all sorts of fern type stuff.
My lawn that I thought was grass was actually 90% rubbish.
It's amazing isnt it what stuff comes out!

Is it true that the shorter the grass is the more water it needs to survive/thrive?

I have the same scarifier…they are great little machines..👍
Did your scarifier have the tines attachment or metal blades? Which is best to use? Thanks
Hi the blades.. Both sort of do the same thing but the blades are more aggressive

My grass got laid in July last year is it worth me doing any of this. It is a new build house so the ground is pretty bad
Hi aeration especially it you deep drill will help a lot and get some organic matter in there plus soil and gypsum will over time improve the soil
U use wood or aluminum handle on the Wolfgarten ? 59 55 or 46 inch handle ?
Hi the wooden one 59 inches
So actual size 30in 😄
I have plenty of weeds and moss in my lawn. Do I weed and feed first then hollow tine and aerate. I intend to over seed. Which is the best order.
Hi I'd put some weedkiller on in next 2 weeks.. then give it 6 weeks before aerating and seeding cheers
Whats the proper name for the blue grass thats in the pots ?
Sorry I dont know.

How are we going to deal with this up coming cold spell I’ve covered the lawn in black polythene sheet there saying -10 😂I hope not
I’ve squeezed in an iron and seaweed app just in case it’s very cold

Do you need to aerate every year?
Not always no.. it its performing well you can leave alone but most lawns get a little compacted each year so annually is my recommendation
@@LawnRight I did it last year and it’s growing good so I was thinking of a little Over-seeding and scarifying come end of the month
Does the scarifier break down the aeration cores ? So I’m guessing some of the cores get raked up into the trash
