Mon-TEEgo is how she pronounces it. And I saw Patina Miller perform the role a few weeks ago and she was sublime! She was also spectacular in Pippin a few years ago!
here's the thing about changing the rhythm tho: performers tend to rush, and I hear that happen in this performance. it's very "pasek and paul" to make it a dotted figure at the end of a phrase 😅 its very pop, right? and I prefer the witch to hold a tighter rein on the rhythm with this song. it's a complex song about fear, control, manipulation (what we now call "gaslighting"). imho, the rhythm up until the bridge ought to sound a chant, because the witch is casting a spell on Rapunzel. regarding the vocal production, this song sits right in what should the break in the witch's vocal range (B through C#, or so). there are different options for how a singer chooses to manage this break: blending it with head voice; or belting through it; or even breaking/"crying". patina demonstrates each of these techniques beautifully. and those messa di voce "with me" moments that bookend this song are just so masterfully executed 🧑🍳💋 technique, technique, technique!!!
My God your analysis adds to the experience and emotion. Thanks. I hope I live long enough to see Sondheim's Into The Woods another couple of times. Sondheim is a path to resolution.
Saw Into the Woods original cast. I notice a bunch of the choices Patina Miller makes reference what Bernadette Peters did. ruclips.net/video/CviTE6XuRs0/видео.html This is true in terms of dynamics and changes in placement. Both leave it all out there on the stage. Would love to see you do a comparison. It's cool how you point out the way the high notes of this song are clearly within Miller's range, and how she does things to make it feel harder and more poignant. Love that. I really appreciate how you analyze the vocal choices as they tell story and reveal character. Neat. Definitely subscribing. Thanks for this great content.
Loved this. Thanks for sharing!!!
I love how you point out that her vocal production changes as the character’s tactics in the song shift! I hadn’t noticed that before. Keep it up! :)
Oh yeah, I'm just gonna spontaneously pop out a crazy high note just for fun. (2:45) Geez Mateo, you are so darn multi-talented!
Haha, thanks Gail! You're pretty incredible yourself!

Mon-TEE-go. My bad. Thanks for catching that, Lawrence!
