  • Can you believe it? Ibis Cycles has finally released their first eMTB.
The Ibis Oso is the brand’s bold and wild entry to the electric mountain bike market, and a pretty surprising one at that. Not surprising that Ibis created an eMTB, as we’ve spent the last two years pestering them for a hint at when it’d be coming out and when we could get one. Instead what surprised us (besides how little time we had before it launched) was that it was such a bold-looking bike with a big battery, full power Bosch CX drive unit and packed some big travel capabilities. Ibis gives the Oso eBike 155mm of rear wheel travel with the ability to run air or coil shocks and users can also increase travel to 170mm by increasing shock stroke from 60mm to 65mm. It seems their ‘Downhill both ways’ ethos for the new niche of mountain bikes is loud and proud on the Oso eMTB as riders can also increase travel from 170mm up front to a dual crown 190mm. Oso means bear in Spanish, which is the animal on the California flag, but we can’t help but think that this bear’s intention of eating chunky trails had something to do with the naming process. Let’s get into the features, geometry and tech before sharing our thoughts from the first ride review.
    FRAME FEATURES
Backed with a seven-year frame warranty and lifetime replacement on bushings, the Ibis Oso is a burly eBike. Our large weighs in just under 54 pounds with the 155/170mm travel setup, beastly 220mm rotors and Maxxis Double Down tires. Large and Extra Large frames run 29-inch tires front and rear while Small and Medium bikes will run a mixed, or Mullet wheel set up with a 27.5” rear tire.
Ibis claims the Oso eBike has the most progressive suspension kinematic of any bike they’ve ever made, and we believe them. Riders will be able to ride the stock 155mm of travel with either an air of Fox DHX2 coil in size 205×60 Trunnion or increase travel to 170mm with a 205x65mm Trunnion shock. Max fork travel is 190mm and yes, downhillers rejoice, the Ibis Oso is dual crown approved.
The Oso’s intentions don’t end with big travel numbers as frame stiffness seems to be impressive for a raised mono-stay frame. Ibis shared that there is another internal wall that runs through the mono-stay increases stiffness compared to a hollow chainstay. Ibis also gives the Oso polycarbonate downtube and a really cool motor protector as well as rubber swing arm protectors.
Boost 148 dropout spacing, a SRAM UDH, 2.5” tire clearance and some size-changing geometry dimensions keep the Oso current with trends and demands from discerning riders. Water bottle storage requires a side-loading cage but will give small riders 22oz bottle clearance with other sizes clearing 26oz bottles.
    ELECTRONICS
Ibis opted to give the Oso some really cool integrated Lupine lights front and rear. Admittedly we were a bit turned off at first, but they don’t really add much weight and the added benefits in terms of safety while commuting on the bike or squeezing in that “One more lap” that eBikes are always guilty of making us do. A Lupine SL F headlight has 600 or 900 Lumen settings when turned on and the Lupine C14 rear light puts out a bright red 45 Lumen glow that won’t have you looking over your shoulder on the pedal home.
Powering the Bosch Performance Line CX drive unit is a removable Bosch Powertube 750Wh battery. The battery is very quickly removable, and we like that. A Bosch Kiox 300 display and Bosch LED remote offer control and information on your bike’s vitals.
    BUILD KIT
Currently there will only be one model available that retails for $10,999. It is an Ibis, and we know there are lots of cool premium parts about the bike however we suspect some customers may comment on the GX Eagle and Fox Performance Series suspension spec, and in-house bars and wheels when discussing value. A couple areas we’re happy to see upgraded on the spec sheet however are the Maxxis Double Down casing tires and Shimano XT 4-piston brakes with 220mm rotors. The Ibis Oso likes to go downhill fast, and these are two important ingredients when it comes to managing all those downhill laps.

Honestly the rear swinger looks proportional to the downtube which I think is half the reason this doesn’t look bad. Most other ebikes have skinny little seat/chainstays compared to the downtube which makes them look like porkers. This bike, not so much. Love what they’ve done with making this thing a shredder. Well done Ibis!

Extender and removable battery are must haves IMO. TQ on right track with super quiet transmission. Hopefully the other leaders catch on and follow that trend. VG overview guys despite the hiccups you had and the short time on the bike. Looking forward to your more in-depth review.
As an Ibis Ripmo fan I was waiting for this bike to land for so long, and eventually gave up and bought a Levo expert instead which I love. Now the anguish of wondering if I should have waited. It does sound to be a bigger bike than I need tbh, though the adjustability in the suspension should make it a very adaptable bike.
Would be keen to hear your views on how this bike stacks up against the competition like the Levo, Rail, eRansom, Bullet, etc.
Kind of sitting on the fence with the quirky design of the rear. That rear stay is not the most attractive design, but functionality is more important than looks I guess. That Bosch controller is also butt fugly. Hasn’t Bosch come out with a new more discrete controller and display? Surprised Ibis did not choose that instead.
    Cheers from NZ.

All bike companies seem to put the emphasis on the range when this is not a real requirement for most of us. Most of us ride in parks where you keep looping and getting back to the same or close to the same point over and over again.
Even when I do a bit more exploration, I do close the loop after 20-30km but most of the time I close that loop every 5-10km and do it again.
So right now the only way to get a full power E MTB is by also getting a heavy 500W to 900w battery.
What I need and probably most riders need is a light full power E MTB, at least 80nm+ with an easy battery swap so after 2-4 loop I can take a 10min pit stop and put another 350W battery in.
But every light emtb that comes out has reduced torque to preserve their number one priority, the range! I do not want range. I don't need range. I usually have 2 hours to ride at night. I need power and lightness.
Light should not come with less power but less range.
There is this bike available in EUR only that is a good example of what I think a lot of if not the majority of riders need, I do not like their build but the concept is spot on.
    The Rotwild R.E375 PRO
A 85nm on a 19kg bike this is what we need and we need more options from more manufacturers.

I love all Ibis bikes but this one is so strange I kind of dont like it. Looks like rear tire is so close to the swingarm and no mud clearance, if this is true is hard to understand how Ibis with all the knowledge do that. Also that swingarm looks so fragil for a heavy ebike intended for heavy use.

People often underestimate the benefits of the added weight of ebikes on chunky downhills - weight means stability with no bouncing off rocks and roots. Once you have a motor, weight is not your enemy - lightweight components that wear out quickly are. Not sure of the design of the rear stays - probably doesn’t matter (even heard an interview with the ibis designer - she says unique look was something they were after. Different for the sake of being different isn’t a winning strategy). And also not sure about a Bosch motor - there are better/quieter choices out there. My Turbo Levo’s Brose is quieter and stronger

  • @musmustafa7900
    @musmustafa7900 Год назад

This ain't bad looking but there are far more better looking bikes out there for me to go for this, maybe it would look better in another colour. My current bike comes with the Bosch motor which i think is one of the best out there if you can get past there clunky controller and interface which is a shame.. as there are plenty of super good examples for them to have changed this by now.

Too much. Too many cables, too many things going on on the handlebar, too thick bottom bracket, too many gadgets, lights?.. Perhaps IBIS will have a simple light weight EMTB in the future, but this iteration (like all full power EMTBs) looks monstrous.

Love the look and yes that rear swingarm looks like a dirtbike which is what these are bc they have motors, not hating on eBikes, i will own one some day, but that's a straight up motorized bike that goes on a trail, whatever the tire width is or that it has cranks. Ibis just owned it!
