Re-thinking task management systems for my ADHD brain!

  • The best task management system does not equal productivity. All my life when I struggled with completing tasks, I was told "All you need is a good task management system! That will help you get things done". I started to believe that and now trying to work with my ADHD brain, I realize that task management systems is just that... a system that tracks your tasks. A good task management system needs these three basic things. 1.) Does it track your tasks? 2. Does it track when those tasks are due? And last, is it easy to access where ever you are. If your system does at least those three things, you have a good system. So now the real question is, what is going to make you do those tasks in your system?

      Thank you for the advice. I have gotten a few comments about the music in my videos and I am working on it. I'm not sure if you have seen my last couple of videos, but let me know if the volume of the music getting better. Or do you think I shouldn't use background music at all? Let me know you thoughts. Thanks for watching

      If you want to keep the background music, you can EQ the music to not overlap in terms of wave range with your voice.

      Weirdly the music keeps me focused on the content. My brain mutes the music because it’s repetitive, but I can see it being distracting for most.

    I love this video!! So many good things for us ADHD-brained folks!! I love the music, but the volume made it slightly hard to hear and focus on your voice, which focus is tough for me anyway LOL. If it could be about 25% quieter it would have been perfect for me! Just my feedback, thanks for sharing!!

    My issue with Task Management is that it's my safe place I go to not to get anything done, but get something done. I hear "Rich why wasn't this done?" Then I'm too embarrassed to say "Because I got distracted planning it in task management. Which my old system needed to be revamped for the 20th time because this one seemed more interesting to me until I got halfway through it then this other one was more efficient then I got about a quarter of the way through planning it out there........... no, no, no the original system was best so let's go back to that. Oh look it's time to clock out."

    As someone with ADHD, here’s what I’ve found helps me with task initiation. 1. Set a timer. I’ve been using a task management tool called Sunsama that allows me to estimate the time for each task AND set a time when I’m doing it. It’s been completely game changing for me. 2. Set deadlines with external accounting for my work projects. For example, if I plan to host a webinar, I advertise the webinar publicly, get people signed up then work on the presentation. I need projects with set goals, I need to feel the pressure. 3. Keep it simple with tasks. I usually plan to much which leads to overwhelm so I’ve been working on estimating my time and usually I can do half of what I set out to do.

    Great content but for me the background music was a bit overwhelming. I don't need it gone, but I'd love the music to be barely audible in the background. I am the person who asks my wife to mute the TV when she wants to talk with me, so maybe that's just me...

    These were great! I have a doctorate in physical therapy, have 3 kids and a wife and I'm just starting to learn that I probably have undiagnosed ADD/ADHD based on hearing patients talk about their symptoms and how they manage the condition... Listening to your tips, the reasons and what you feel with them makes so much sense to why I've done some of them in the past and why I feel overwhelmed when I lose those disciplines!

    I'm so relieved that I am not the only person like this, haha. I've tried paper task lists and journals. I stopped. I tried Notion. I stopped. My problem was trying to use all these other systems that were designed for someone else. My best type of task management is Post-it notes. The only problem I have with it is that it wastes resources over time. But I do get the enjoyment from writing my tasks on one, knocking them out, and then tossing them away.

    I keep two lists with me - aha and oho. Aha for all the ideas, random tangents etc and oho - for all problems - getting groceries to sending an email.

    Just found this channel, and I'm very grateful. (I wish the music was a bit quieter personally.)
    I have a notebook for work, one for my personal life, and one for creative writing (that's my version of taking videos). It can be hard, because once I've written everything down I tend to avoid it, or forget about it. Like taking a video, but never going back to see the notes you made for yourself. It's still the best system for me that I've found, but wish to god I was more productive. I have to do twice the work for half the results as other people.

    Work can be a real stress-fest, but having some backup can definitely lighten the load. Still, it's frustrating when AI just can't seem to grasp what you really need. Case in point: I come home to a stack of a thousand spreadsheets to fill out and 50 emails to blast out after a grueling 12-hour workday. 😩 It's a major bummer because by the time I'm done, my productivity's tanked, and it feels like I'm just spinning my wheels...

      There's a ton of help out there online, but there's a big difference between a digital assistant and a digital taskmaster. Ended up having to ditch the whole project...

    I am a mixture of both. I do need a decent task management system to be in place because otherwise I end up in a loop of starting something, remembering something else I need to do, starting that thing, remembering another task... Each time I remember something it derails me and I end up in a loop getting nothing meaningful done. However, if I have my tasks managed and I'm not convinced I'm forgetting something important (or at least less convinced I'm forgetting something important) it is easier for me to start something and keep going with it. But I do still have to convince myself to start...

    • @pjp9383
      @pjp9383 Год назад

      Absolutely perfect, and if I'm consistent about using "want to" instead of "have to"/"need to", then I don't usually even need to stop and think of a "because." Because sometimes it's as simple as "because it's what the job requires and I like my job overall," or, "because all my clothes/dishes/surfaces are dirty and I need something to wear/eat from/sit on."

    • @avidrucker
      @avidrucker Год назад

      I have a problem with "want to" because I feel it doesn't fully capture importance nor desire, and I feel it comes off as "I only do what I want to do" which, while that may be fundamentally true, I think the issue really is motivation and, more broad speaking, executive functioning capacity. I'd like a concise, simple way of saying, "this is something I've decided I will attempt to do" without sounding confused about what matters, what needs to be done for effective/healthy/constructive action/outcomes, etc.. Like, for example, taxes, laundry, finding a new place to live when my lease is up, applying for jobs, etc. where I subjectively dislike/hate/do not enjoy the tasks, but at the same time, find it necessary to find the motivation to take meaningful action towards these endeavors.

    Is this a test? It's hard to focus on what he is saying because of the loud background music/noise. I need to focus more.

    Okay 3:25 in and I already need to comment "I don't like that because I feel like I'm being judged" YES EXACTLY! I Don't want to be guilted into something that I'm already arguing with myself about "you should just do this, it's so easy, why can't you just get it done?"

    Instead of tzlking tips to camera, just write ideas down on yellow postits and drop in idea to decvelop box or in errands, shopping, or to do or future baskets is quicker.

    I'm super interested in this for my ADD kids. One thing I think that could improve this video is getting rid of the intense guitar music in the background. It's so distracting I can't really listen to what this guy is saying.

    This seems like a cool video; but gotta b honest with you-from a recently diagnosed ADHDr w/other comorbidities as well... Your background music is killing my senses... It is fighting against your voice and idk if I will be able to finish this :( please reconsider the volume levels a bit?) I really want to become a loyal sub to your channel. Thanks for listenin
