How to Repair RD-500 Keyboard Hammers - Other Roland Keyboards as Well

- I have a wonderful, but old, RD-500 digital piano. For the last two years some of the keyboard hammers have broken. I had a professional shop repair it twice until he said "The hammers are very fragile...eventually you'll need to buy a new keyboard".
I did not like that answer, so I set about finding a way to replace all of the hammers. Turns out Roland US offers an 88 hammer replacement kit for $300. I took some initial advice from this video then started my repair. • HOW TO REPLACE HAMMERS...
I'm sure I captured way too much detail for some of you, but I wanted to convey everything I learned in this process.
Hope you learn as much as I did!

I know this video is 10 years old, but in case you ever see any of these messages, let me thank you for making this the easiest electronic job I've ever done. Not sure if it was Roland making this keyboard extremely easy to work on, your wonderful teaching skills, or a combination of the two, but you made a job I was dreading the biggest piece of cake ever. Thank you so much, Greg.
I’m so glad it helped!
@@GregHint Hi Greg, my roland rd-300s with a key (A1) lose sound, how to fix it? Thank you...
Thanks for your video. Your video helped me repair about eight keys that had broken hammers. The Roland RD-500 is a really good keyboard with some fabulous sounds, and I'm so glad I was able to fix it.
Best tutorial ever I've had this keyboard in my closet for almost 15 yrs, I really didn't want to get rid of it.
This video helped me a lot repair my keyboard!
Thank you for filming and sharing with us.
GOD bless you and your family.
I'm going to repair my RD600 now! Thank you-you've saved me a fortune! My keys sink every winter & they always need replacing!
Thanks for the inspiration Greg! My son and I did an 88 key hammer replacement on a 20 year old RD-500 ourselves and it now works like new!! Thanks!!!!
If I ever get a chance, I owe you a beer some day. I just replaced all 88 on a RD-600 following your example. Came together without issue and turned out beautifully.
Thanks very much for sharing your experience.
I can't remember how many times I broke the RD-500 hammers during 1994-1999. I'm very happy with my Nord Electro 3 nowadays. Very nostalgic to see the RD-500, though, even though it broke too easily for me. Nice vid.
Excellent video. The first time I had to replace hammers in my RD500 (many years ago) it was really a puzzle how to open the case. You do not want te remove to many screws as some are used to fix the internals and have nothing to do with the lid. A pitty that Roland does not reinforce the hammers. But as long as they are available this instruction is a great help. User may mark the essentional screws with some tape for future replacements of hammers.
Hi Greg-thanks for getting back to me! I ordered the felts & a few single hammers to experiment. I'm not expecting it will work-- I will probably have to replace the hammers, but I figure there's nothing to lose. Roland support was good---almost no wait time, and knew their stuff. They informed me that the replacement hammers are an improved design, so if I spend the $300, it shouldn't be a problem again down the road-this was nice to know. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again! Paul
Wow thank you so much! We bought at Rd 600 at a thrift store for $20, and it had 12 broken keys. But thank to you video I fixed all of them and it works like new! :)
Thank you so much for making this video and uploading it to RUclips. I found this while using Google searching for the problem I had with my Roland RD500. Mine is about 20 years old. Recently I was playing a little on it at home when the F3 key stayed down. Just after that, the same happened with the G3 key. So I had 2 white keys not functioning anymore. Then I saw your "repair manual".
Great Video, i had a broken hammer, used your video and now its perfect. thx!
awesome video instructions thank you! I was able to replace one of my hammers on my RD 600 using your video this morning. It beats taking it in and spending 100 dollars at a repair shop.
The best tutorial I've ever seen. Thanks a lot!
Hi Greg - replacing the felt instead of the keys has worked so far... keeping my fingers crossed- thanks again! -Paul
What a great video! I have an RD-500 too with the same problems. Of course I completely took mine apart before looking for a RUclips video! Thanks
I echo @soundman in thanking you for this helpful video! This is why we love DIY projects at our house. 😊
Thank you for your video. Because of this I had the confidence to open and repair a broken key on my RD500.
Great instructions. It helped me very well. Thanks!
thanks for this video: exactly what I needed to fix my Roland 500!
Hi Lukasz- the felt idea worked for a little while-- I play pretty lightly. But a few weeks ago a friend came over and played and they started breaking again. So I'm going to replace the whole set now. So I guess doing the felt alone is just a temporary fix. Good luck-Paul
I've never had the courage to open my Roland and fix the dead keys, but I did run over a cat once.great video
Yeah.. you helped the man with the two left hands fix his rd500 B-key!
Thx!!!!! to you, screwdriver and glue!
Thx for this tutorial, many greetings from me and my RD 500.
Main point after 4:25 is that you just have to replace the hammers - of which there are only two kinds - and not the keys themselves. Don't be afraid to open the piano to se which keys actually need replacement. Parts form one key may lay under the neighbouring keys so that more keys look broken.
Really useful video - many thanks.
Great video - I can see i need a new hammer - where can I buy these parts for the rd500?
Greg just watched your video. Had only one bad key, G 1-1. I am in the process of glueing the plastic casing over the lead together. I think this will work fine. This RD 500 has never seen a stage, lived its life in a climate controlled studio. So Im hoping I get off easy. Your instructions were perfect. Ill try to post a video with the finished product.
Amazing video, THANK YOU 🙏🏾
Thanks for this video! Just called Roland and they do still offer the replacement set. However, I'm wondering if the main reason that the hammers are breaking is that the felts are worn down. I'm wondering if I replace the felt cushions (I think there are 5 or 6) for about $50, if they'll take more of the impact and the hammers won't break. Has anyone ever tried this approach?- Paul
I have a Fatar Studio 900 with a dead D1. Are the mechanics the same as those you demonstrated? Great video BTW.
Thank you for the video and great tips. Where did you get the hammers?
Awesome video! Thank you very much.....Do you know where I can get the hammers individually for a good price?
Hello Greg, I have one FP-9 piano, which has almost every hammer broken, they are all broken or about to brake, I need to find the replacement parts for this piano. Could you tell me where did you bought the complete kit? It wold be very helpfull to me,I'm very attached to my FP-9 and I not prepare to lose it yet.
Thanks in advance
Very helpful, thanks a lot!!!
Hey. Thank you for your turtorial. I wonder WHY does it break? Is it because you use it for heavymusic? I am wondering about buying a used RD.500, so maybe this is a weakness in these I should be worried about, and look elsewhere to buy another brand or model? Any thoughts? Thank you for your comment.
I took out all the surrounding screws, but it won’t lift all the way up. There seems to be something still holding it, but I can’t figure out where. Are there additional screws I need to take out as well?
Thanks much , great video btw , very helpful :)
I have used acrylic to repair broken and cracked hammers. Powder liquid.. sets in minutes. You can get it from a dental supply house. I have fixed a lot of things with it. I have even casted up plastic parts with alginate to form the die and poor in acrylic.
Where did you get the parts? I cannot find them?
Hi-- where did you buy all these hammers. They seem to run about 12 bucks a pop and so I am wondering if they can be bought cheaper by the bulk
thanks
md
Greg, Thanks! I've got an RD-500 and am thinking about replacing all the keys. After you did the replacement of all the keys, did you notice that the keyboard action was a lot firmer (more like new?) My action has gotten mushy over the fifteen years I've had it, and if the action isn't improved it may not be worth it to me..
Also, if there is an action improvement, do you think it's due more to the replacement of keys or of hammer, Or a little of both? Or did you even replace any keys?
Hi, I'm currently making a full restoration of my RD500 and was wondering about Your experience with the felt. Mine (upper) is worn out, lower is somewhat usable (gel-like glue + old felt). I was wthinking about adding additional thick felt strip over old ones, but I'm also afraid not to change the key action. Can You recommend something that worked for You - restoration/modification/new ones? Thanks in advance :)!
Does anyone know how to fix the constant hum on the RD-500? I’ve heard it may be a bad power supply. Also, do you need to replace every key just to get to the one that is broken?
Where did you order your replacement hammers?
Where did you acquire those parts? How much were they?
Hello Sir.
I really do not know how to fix my Roland hammer key of RD-500, or buy it. Can you tell me, where can I buy it, please?
Thanks.
Hi,
I have a problem with my RD700SX, my Bb just left to the middle C is producing very short sound when I'm attacking the key normally or fast. When I play with a slow attack the sound is normal. The hammer doesnt present any sluggish action or anormal mecanical behaviour seen from outside. Any hint where it could come from?
I would really appreciate your advice since I'm a bit scared of opening the keyboard and coming up with a worse situation than now!
Outstanding!!! Thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome! It helped me and the replacement keys are still going strong! I know it’s an old keyboard but the piano sounds are so great I really don’t need another.
Where did you get the replacement keys
Is the movement for the RD 600 similar to the RD 500's?
I have one key, a "G" note a little to the left of the middle that is super sensitive. I can barely touch it and it is as loud as can be. What do I need to do about that? I have had to fix some keys like you did but can't figure out what is causing this problem. Thanks for any help you can give me.
The SEVEN BLACK screws WITH ATTACHED WASHERS on the bottom, three on left side three on right and only one in the middle, are the only ones you need to remove, to get the top of the RD keyboard to open like a car lid.
thank you for this!!
@IBMGreg If that's the case, then what's the award winning PA-4 hammer action?
Thanks Greg. Very helpful, I was stuck at trying to figure out how to release the keys from the carrier. Can I ship you my cat?
Donde compraste las piezas? 😳 tendrías el link de la tienda?
where can i get the grease for the keys?? i got a roland xp 10 and some of the keys get stuck and its frustrating
Where can i order a key for roland rd100
Any idea what one of these pianos is worth now, I have one I want to get rid of ?
I have the same problom with my RD-500. Went to repair once (many keys were "down" ) but now I'm gonna do it myself. Gotta get in contact with Roland Benelux for some new hammers...
ok where did the parts come from isn't that the 1st question I nee answered i have a rd 500 and 600 wanting another. tu wb soon
dude, i have a little casio, but i think is burned out be cause it wont comes on, my question is, can it still be fixed, also i have a yamaha but i think is out of tune, is that possible, if it is how can i tune it back?
Great instructional video. About died at the part about the cat-- absolutely hilarious. Was that real or staged?
Where did you order your hammers from. I understand Roland doesn't have them for sale.
I did order mine from Roland. If they don't offer them any more, I did find a site that sells them still. Good luck! www.keyboardkountry.com/replacement-keys-for-roland-rd-600-a-90-fp1-fp9-and-others/
I've always used a thin steel wire of high resistance to amend or reinforce the broken hammers. It is perfect, cheap and does not break again.
Please could you give some details as to how you applied the wire to the hammers? I'd be very grateful if you could share some insights. Thanks!
Where did you buy the hammers
At the time I bought them from Roland directly. It sure if they still sell them. I also found some at Full Compass. Good luck!!
Eu comprei o RD 100 e está com o B falhando da 2/8.
You didn't have to add lubricant at all????
Is the cat still dead or did you guys eat it?
RIP kitty
Great video... and cute kids. :-)
WTF IS HAPPENING AFTER 8.40? MY MIND IS FULL OF FUCK
Haha nobody notice or what? That was crazy, is it like a piano cleaning tutorial? Or a family solving problems tutorial
Dude, you are dangerous, you lay the screws on the hardwood floor and the edge plate on the floor where the edge plate can get stepped on.
