I don't know what's going on but it's beautiful.
My very limited understanding and my most likely errant educated guess is that the man is very burdened for his transitions, and is gravely saddened by the desertion of Yiddish Judaism by the mostly secular Jews of Israel and later, even by his own children.
It is the grief you can only feel when you feel like you're own culture and way of life is dying in front of your very eyes and you're helpless to do anything about it.
But it's very important for you, and you can't forsake it.
But that's just my 2¢.
