thats it bro I told you it would be worth it. I knew this car was a good one and you nearly turned a blind eye lol I'm just so HAPPY this has started man really happy just shows BMW engineering at its best many years ago and STILL puts newer cars to shame if that was a E90 OR E60 no way would that have started
The red light is to tell you when the brake fluid is low, but In your case it’s because you don’t have a reservoir cap with a fluid level sensor, so it’ll just stay on until it’s either disconnected or the sensor is replaced and fluid is full. Congrats on the car!
Fuel tank may need to be sandblasted or put a an aftermarket fuel cell (liner) I've heard race applications do that. install a clear see thru inline fuel filter to see if the system has small rust particles in the tank.
Nathan, love your channel for all the non-nonsense M54 advice. I own a 2006 X3 and was thrilled to see you pick up this gem, as I also have a ‘73 2002 which I’ve had aside for a decade and now just starting back up on it. Working through the brake system now. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the 1600... it sounds to me like it’s running pretty darn good considering it’s been sitting and you’ve not done a thing to it!!
In their time these were the "kings" on the "Deutsche Autobahnen" between the Opel Kadetts and VW Bugs. They could manage about 100 miles/hour and when you drove with your VW Bug on the the left side of the Autobahn, they came behind you with flashing front lights: the German loved these cars. These cars saved BMW from "Untergang".
Got a 68 chevelle in my 20s from AZ, rust free.. Haven't been GLUED to my screen munching chips and a soda, Wide-eyed as it sputtered to life, in for-Ever!.. haha, Great vid. Watching this I can just-smell the old, musty, weird-rubber smells and that way the seats smelled haha.. All the pull-style switches.. lots of memories of fun times.. Tedious time.. But fun to restore an older car. Awesome Nathan.
Nice to see it run. Hopefully, the red warning light on the dash is for low charge rate and not oil pressure! I really like your plans for the car and looking forward to seeing it come along.
It amazing that this car has almost no rust round the windshield moldings and the front headlight areas. I have seen a few of these models and they all had bad rust issues in those two areas and other areas as well. This is a great keeper and should be brought up to a 0 rust spec by someone. Thanks for the great content.
Good for you. I love the old analog BMWs. It is going to be a lot of work but fun work. My son has an E46 that has been a labor or love for he and I. I enjoy your channel. It has been a nice guide for us as we work on his car. I would love to come across a project like this for he and I to work on together.
Love your videos man!!! So this happened to my car today, thinking about the fuel filter. The car started but it bogged down and died, cranked but didn’t start for a while, went and disconnected and reconnected the fuel pump relay in the trunk and it started right up for 15 seconds and then it died again. Now it starts but it won’t stay on. 2000 bmw e39, auto and with 240,000 miles.
Nathan's BMW Workshop Nathan, I just bought all sensors since I don’t have a check engine light and my scanner doesn’t read a code that’s stored. I’m throwing those on today, if you nailed it on the head and the car starts, best believe I’m sending you some scratch your way, thanks Nathan! Appreciate the lookout!
ChrisB - WD = water displacement. It displaces water but is also a solvent and removes oil / grease. It offers zero protection to bores because it’s viscosity is so low.
Exactly. It's almost painful watching this guy attempt to start this poor car. Then there's the air filter lid laying on top of the hot battery terminal. Amateur hour. I wouldn't let this guy change a set of wiper blades on my car.
Nice work- nice sound of the running engine. Love the roll boards under the wheels. Need to get those for my workshop... I'd give anything to see your face when she started :D That smile was hearable... EDIT: btw. the red light could indicate that you're running on choke, to prevent damage to the engine when its warm.
Really good video.... looks like you was having a bit of a time getting that Sta-Bil in the gas to pump on past to get some good flammable gas to burn.... Great it cranked over like a champ....these are some really easy engines to work on .... by it being low tech components items in the fuel and ignition systems....it may need choke and or fuel and air jets in the carb to be cleaned and adjusted too....it’s work in progress a Mechanic Project!!! 😊😎🇺🇸🇩🇪
Panicked a little when I seen that backfire through the carb. Remember a car burning down and almost taking a shed with it from doing that when we were spraying fuel in it. Good to see that m10 run hardy old things with less electronics. Much preferred my old m20b25 engine to these m50 and m52s
Kampfmesser - I really like E21. Built a few over the years although I’m back in an 02 nowadays. I did run E30M3 for a while but they’re just too much cash now. I’ve just put an M44 in my 02 and running it on ITB’s. Hopefully it’ll make 180+ bhp and pep up the performance a bit.
Nice new car!. I watched Nathans older videos, he sayd in one video that air mass flow sensor can make transmission problems? Is this true? and what kind if so. Thanks!
@@kribar96 I have codes, P0171/P0174. I checked my disa valve, and someone was cutted all flaps off(i got new disa today, hope this fixes my problems) . I get transmission light if i speed up almost right away when engine has been started(dosnt matter is engine warm or cold) only what matters have i started it right after or not. . If i have drived it a while and then speed, no transmission codes. My english is not the best sorry. engine M54 e83
That’s a fairly original car or so it would seem. The rubber seals aren’t that cheap, especially oem door seals that fit well. Side window seals are a pita to install.
Rag soaked in wd40 in a jamjar with a soldering iron through the lid makes plenty smoke. Add 2 hoses and a cheap little pump you can make one for little to nothing

Damn, son. I probably smiled a mile wide once she roared to life. I'll bet you did too, Nathan.
This was a good choice, so glad your were able to purchase it, to give us a look at the engineering from the past.
The red light is to tell you when the brake fluid is low, but In your case it’s because you don’t have a reservoir cap with a fluid level sensor, so it’ll just stay on until it’s either disconnected or the sensor is replaced and fluid is full. Congrats on the car!
Cooper Ziegenhagen - The red light is handbrake and low fuel.
Just goes to show, you can't kill an M10.
This is such a cool car!!! Can’t wait to watch you restore it!!!!!!
Good luck for your new car!! Hope you get it!!
Congrats! Glad you got it running.
Hope from here on out it's only better. Can't wait for more vids.

That view must be incredible.

Nathan you should epoxy coat your floor to seal it if oil, grease, etc gets on it to protect from stains.
I will as soon as the weather warms up
Nice to see it run. Hopefully, the red warning light on the dash is for low charge rate and not oil pressure! I really like your plans for the car and looking forward to seeing it come along.
Red light is E brake and low fuel warning light.
Did you check the oil and coolant before starting it?

Soooooo good to hear it run, looking forward to seeing you work your magic on it 👍
I realise your restoring this for your channel Nathan but if I owned it I would leave it as is! I love the stank look!
Sounds good, sounds like my 2L M10. Stumbled across this channel. Have to see where this goes. Might be helpful for my little project car.
This car is so awesome! So glad to hear it run!
Holy shit, that was easy lol. I’m glad it’s working out for you. Restoring this will probably be great for the channel!

Either Maf or crank or cam sensor
Nathan's BMW Workshop sounds like a plan. Thank you Nathan. I’ll let you know once I swap those sensors out.

Bro I personally believe it is the fuel filter.
Andrew Calk really?
It’s,,,,,,,it’s alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turn your image stabilisation off. That's the camera noise
For anyone watching, do this properly. Oil change, fresh fuel, wd40 into the cylinders before cranking.
ChrisB WD40 isn’t good for cylinders as it’s too thin and washes oil from bores. A tiny bit of diesel or engine oil is much better.
@@Retrobeemer I disagree. I use wd40 when assembling engines as a bore lube to get pistons in. Works very well

This is the car that competed with the Volkswagon Bug back in the day. Nice!
Bright as can be now!!!! Nice job!
Awesome can't wait to see this car get fixed up
I’m going to look at one on Tuesday hope it looks good so I can buy it
Great acquistion Nathan. Looking forward to this. Respec!
I bet its not the sensors on your e90. Its more likely the chain that is too long, thats what the sensor are there fore to detect
Thats a cool looking car bro. Ps on an e39 is there a way to do a rear 02. Delete so there isnt an check light?
Love that you got the old school on the channel. Will be rewarding to see it rebuilt. Is the next engine N20 or N63? Probably N20.
Wait and see tomorrow lol
are you going to do a turbo or compressor build in a bmw in the future?
love your content
A friend of mine had one of these 68. The engine had a funny tick tick sound.
does it have a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder

One post lift would be awesome for your shop - you can move them around and they are awesome

Could the red light mean that the e brake is engaged?
Weber dual choke replacement carb work really well on m10 engines. 28/36 are perfect for the 1600.
Yeah the two stage Weber carb works great on my E21.

Body-kitted 316-shed a bit? That’s double the power, that’s going to have some zip.

No oil in the cylinders first?

Those lights look boss
Do a smoke test on the E90, would be a good product review those $80 paint can ones.
