The book being read by Del in the airport is a fictional title called “The Canadian Mounted”. It’s also being read by Deadpool in Deadpool 2. I think it was Ryan Reynolds’ tribute to fellow Canadian, John Candy. And yes, Uncle Buck is a must see!
If its the only two instances of a fictional book its def Ryan Reynolds giving a nod to John Candy. And the implication that this took place in the universe where Deadpool exists is oddly satisfying. Gonna have to look for that next watch.
So this is the original monologue at the end. "I didn't have much family. A brother in Montana, some cousins, Marie's folks died back-to-back, the year after we were married. They were pretty old. She was a late child. We didn't have any kids. We had plans. She wanted three kids. Two boys, and a girl. She couldn't have any, though. So we didn't and I guess it's just as well. I number about 300 motels as my home. I sort of attach myself to people from time to time. Like with you. Especially around the holidays. I can take it in March, July, October. I don't mind it. But it gets hard about this time of year. I've never had much of a chance to be a family man but it gets really hard. And you know what it is? I don't get to give any of myself to anybody. It's not the getting I miss, it's the giving. I sat on that plane with you and I thought about you heading home to be with your people. And Tuesday night when you were in the shower and I looked at the picture of your kids, man, I thought you gotta be the luckiest man on Earth to go home and put those little guys on your knee and hug 'em and kiss 'em. I'm thirty-nine years old and I never had that ... and I never will. I'm sorry about all this. I just kinda lost control this time. Every year since Marie's been gone, I've gotten closer and closer to losing it. Usually I can head for a church. I can feel like I'm part of something when I'm in a church. This time... I guess I didn't get to the church fast enough. I just couldn't let go. I vowed I'd never burden anybody with this. And I broke my vow, held you away from your family. Caused you a hell of a lot of trouble. You better run." It completely changes how you view the movie. And this character. It was cut because the studio wanted a much less poignant and much funnier movie. There were a number of cuts like that to this film.
Ouch. Even the months nearly hit home - April, July, and Sept. I am grateful to have two kids though, my eldest is a bit of a ghost but her brother and I talk often. Once you (I) get over the tough...it's time for the next rough. Makes pulling out of the low pretty damn hard.
The original cut of this movie was like three and a half hours long. By the time they cut everything down there was more cut footage than footage left in the film. There is a whole other Planes Trains and Automobiles out there we will never get to see.
Actually, I figured most of those things out with the original ending without the literalness of words. It's evident that he would be triggered at that time of year and that he also attaches to people in an unhealthy way because of it. Also, the delay wasn't entirely his fault, so it's ok they left out the blaming himself thing. I think that monologue would've been too condescending to the audience.
The monologue was cut because the test audience laughed at it and also thought it made Del look bad. In the original cut Neal gets home and Del is in his home town train station waiting for him (and he then does the monologue) which made Del look manipulative/stalkery. The solution was to reverse the shot of the train leaving the station (look closely and you can see a man in the background walking backwards) and add some outtake footage of Neal thinking about things Del had said so it looks like Neal went back for him. It works better because then it's Neal bringing Del home with him rather than Del just turning up and latching on. I don't think the monologue is necessary. We know enough about Del without it.
In a deleted storyline, Steve Martin's wife thinks he must be having an affair, so she is delighted when she meets the real Del and it's not a made up story.
@@ronweber1402 It's one of the big four things I watch every year. If I miss any of them, I don't feel like I've had a Christmas. @@Heiryuu Hahaha yep! I watched a video about the lost 3 hour version of the movie, and there’s all kind of gold that links up little connections and setups we see throughout the release we got :)
Del Griffith was flying to Chicago just to probably stay at a hotel. The plane cancellation, the loss of money, ended up ruining any sort of chance making his reservation at hotel. He probably lost the room was he could not make it. It was also 1987 where they had no cell phones or internet back then where it would be eaiser to confirm a hotem reservation
Every time Steve comes back and John Candy tells him Marie died eight years ago I cry. John Candy's the best, one of few who can make you laugh one minute, and cry the next. I would definitely recommend Uncle Buck, and Armed and Dangerous (with Eugene Levy and Meg Ryan).
He was flying to Chicago because he really did work for the shower curtain ring outfit, and had a multi-state sales route. After he lost his wife and his home, his trunk and his job were all he had left. And he did it -- with a smile and a positive attitude. Very lovable character.... AND actor!
10 seconds in..... Nat says "Is he gonna miss his flight?" And so it begins. This video was so much fun to watch. Thank you Nat. Welcome to Wichita. Edit: Also the ending with his wife hugging him looks seemingly overplayed as you pointed out, but again it is due to the fact that in the original cut she thinks he is having an affair. That's why she is waiting upstairs in tears, thinking he's not coming back. So when he shows up with Del, she is so relieved. And she also knows Del's name, as Neal tells her in another deleted scene. A 3 hour cut of this movie would probably push everyone's anxiety to the limit, but I'd still love to see them release it someday.
@@susanmaggiora4800 It's like she's never seen a comedy before. Yes, weird and illogical things are happening; that's what humor is all about. Also seemed to miss the pathos of John Candy's character, and the assholery of Steve Martin.
(Del takes off shoe in plane) Nat: "Oh no!" (Del takes off sock) Nat:" NOOOOOOOOOOO!!" Lots of triggers for Natalie in this movie. Alternate cut has Del's late wife in the trunk.....kidding. Love the cardigan and your "will wear in any weather" attitude.
Too many critiques of the filmmaker's style and decisions. She mocked two of the most heartwarming scenes in Planes, Trains because "pssh, this is going on too long." The scene in the hotel room where Steve dresses down John Candy, and we see it's breaking John's heart, is one of the better moments in the movie, but she's spending more time talking about, "man that's a long monologue. Old movies have longer monologues than they do now". Um, ok? And then the end, with the beautiful music, and the reunion with his wife, and John Candy smiling, seeing the beautiful family, and Nat mocks the fact that the wife is standing on the stairs, and then the music swell is too long, and then she hates freeze frames. Missing the point, Natalie...and you seem to be missing your heart that we all kinda fell in love with during your earlier reactions. Seems the Christmas season has soured you a little for some reason. Looking forward to 2021 and a more pleasant Natalie Gold film reactions. :)
Also, the entire point of the movie is the comedy of errors, and Murphy's Law (whatever can go wrong, will go wrong), so yes we get that you're frustrated, but that's the point! Enjoy the ride, Nat...it's so much more fun. :)
my grandpa and steve martin were good friends while they were magicians in anaheim, CA i just found out. My dad passed away and he had old 8mm film of his dad and there was steve martin! :D
The part where John Candy suddenly becomes Satan will never cease to make me burst out laughing. To this day, if someone in traffic does something stupid as hell, I do that laugh to break up the tension.
"I... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. Because I'm the genuine article. What you see is what you get." "I don't have a home. Marie's been dead for eight years." I've seen this movie more times than I can count, and those two scenes still make me break out into tears like Niagara Falls. This was one of Candy's finest performances, hands down. He was such a great actor with such an amazing body of work.
movies don't have good long monologues any longer because writers don't have an original thought in their head any longer, If you like John Candy watch Summer Rental
Please watch the following John Candy-movies : -Uncle Buck -The Great Outdoors -Who's Harry Crumb ? -Armed and Dangerous -Only the Lonely -Cool Runnings
He flew to Chicago because he's a traveling salesman. That's why he has that big trunk. He lives on the road now, traveling from place to place selling shower curtain rings. Probably why he's so friendly too. He doesn't have a home, where his friends and family live, so he makes friends whenever he can while travelling.
A Christmas Story, a MUST watch for the Holliday season. "You'll shoot your eye out" the leg lamp, Christmas dinner scene. To many awesome moments to list here.
Good point about monologues. Modern audiences dont talk in their real lives, so everything is a clever quip or snappy retort in modern movies. I saw a movie from teh 50's once where a guy walks into a room full of people, walks to a coat rack, hangs his coat up and then proceeds to speak to the room. You can never have that much dead air in a movie anymore.
Ok so if you are watching Christmas comedies PLEASE watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Absolutely hilarious Christmas movie, as well as an overall comedy movie in general
Written by John Hughes. Chris Columbus was meant to direct Christmas Vacation, but couldn't work with Chevy Chase, so John Hughes gave him another film to direct. It was called Home Alone.
19:10 Just because you live somewhere doesn’t mean it’s a home, sometimes it just a place you have to be. Steve Martin had a home, Candy just had a place to go
You just verified a point people make about how people nowadays are sensitive and offended by everything! A lot of great classic comedies would've never been made if they were suggested today! Can't even imagine people like you watching "Blazing saddles" today! Your head would probably explode!
At the beginning of the movie, he thought that he could make the flight because flying at that time was much easier. You could pretty much just show up at the airport, buy a ticket, and walk on the plane. See the beginning of "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" for a demo.
Yeah, with the drawn out meeting it would be cutting it close, but still feasible back then. No having to show up 3 hours early and go through an hour of security.
I enjoyed your fun commentary. This is one of my favorite comedies, the abrupt switch in the closing minutes was heartwarming. You have a critical eye. I just go with the flow even if something doesn't make sense in real life.
I was looking for a comment like this. I 100% agree. While I genuinely like her reviews, she talks WAYYYY too much and she always talks right through some of the key emotional or funny moments in the movies she reviews. I really like commentary and I don't want someone to just silently sit through a movie and barely react, but she takes it way too far to the other extreme and just goes off on unrelated tangents and skips parts of the reaction people specifically look forward to. It's kind of getting annoying. Talk about the movie and what we're watching. Nobody cares about when movies used to have monologues.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is my number one Holiday movie. Then, A Muppet Christmas Carol. Christmas isn't Christmas until I've watched both of those :D
Poor Nat 😂😂😂😂 I could feel your anxiety building. After the holidays you should watch John Candy in John Hughes' movie Uncle Buck. And Steve Martin in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Great reactions here! This is a fun and sweet movie, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it 😊
Fact:The original cut of this film was well over 3 and a half hours. I absolutely enjoyed this movie, and the performances of both Steve Martin and John Candy were both funny and moving. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reactions to this classic film Natalie. Be well and stay golden.

Such a feel good, funny and heart warming film. I love this movie. RIP John Candy. I've heard there is an unreleased alternate cut to this film, but never looked into it, because I like this movie just as it is. Uncle Buck is the best John Candy film imho.
Just a script and a few scenes. The original cut was 3 hours long. The studio is unsure if the footage is archived somewhere. There’s a RUclips video describing this uncut version but it’s a lot of speculation.
The best movie. Really how do you watch this and not cry at little at the end. This is the first movie I watch during the Christmas season. Love the movie. So great.
Hey Natalie, what's up? Love this movie. They Spoofed parts of this in an episode of Family Guy called Baby Not On Board which was a parody of John Hughes films.
Does it bother anyone else that cover art for Planes Trains and Automobiles has been changed to look like a Christmas movie? The photoshopped gift boxes and candy cane sign? Why can't a Thanksgiving movie be left a Thanksgiving movie?
Fine. It's not a christmas movie. For a movie to be a christmas movie, it has to be about christmas, not merely set at christmas. You could set Die Hard at literally any time of the year and it would be the same movie. The only thing that would be different is that the lines mentioning christmas would be changed to standard cheesy 80s action movie dialogue. That's it. John could be going to visit his family for a birthday. The party in the movie could easily be a new year's party..which would let you keep the christmas decorations. For a movie to be a christmas movie, christmas has to be part of the plot. If you take christmas out of Die Hard, the feel of the movie will be the same. If you take christmas out of a christmas movie, the entire vibe of the movie will change. The feel of Die Hard wouldn't change.
@@Entertainzor I wouldn't fully agree that Die Hard is _the quintessential_ Christmas film, but it's definitely more so than The Shining. I get it, they're both set during Christmas, but even though neither Action nor Horror films are usually seen as typical Christmas films, at least Die Hard makes frequent references to the season all the way through. It has various Christmas songs and Christmas themed sounds in it's score , It takes place during a Christmas office party, Christmas decorations are abundant, Christmas presents are mentioned, Mclane dresses up Fritz (Karl's brother) as Santa in the lift (who can forget Hans Grubers _Ho...Ho...Ho_ when reading the note) and Theo gives his own interpretation of Twas the Night Before Christmas. There are many more smaller mentions. I can't think of many references to Christmas in The Shining, maybe you can.
You should check out Uncle Buck. The frustration is the comedy. This is one of the best comedies of its time.

@@susanmaggiora4800 It's like she's never seen a comedy before. Yes, weird and illogical things are happening; that's what humor is all about. Also seemed to miss the pathos of John Candy's character, and the assholery of Steve Martin.
I had to snicker when she was relieved when they got into car knowing what's about to happen lol
(Del takes off shoe in plane) Nat: "Oh no!"
(Del takes off sock) Nat:" NOOOOOOOOOOO!!"
Lots of triggers for Natalie in this movie. Alternate cut has Del's late wife in the trunk.....kidding.
Love the cardigan and your "will wear in any weather" attitude.
13:11 I don't know that there's ever been a greater rant in comedy history.
Martin is on fire and McClurg is great as always.
3:02, love the Kevin Bacon Cameo, And makes me wish that him and Steve Martin were in a Movie, playing bickering neighbors.
Well, it's not those two, but you might like "Neighbors," with John Belushi & Dan Akroyd.
That was a crossover scene with another Kevin Bacon movie, where we see it following him.
Too many critiques of the filmmaker's style and decisions. She mocked two of the most heartwarming scenes in Planes, Trains because "pssh, this is going on too long."
The scene in the hotel room where Steve dresses down John Candy, and we see it's breaking John's heart, is one of the better moments in the movie, but she's spending more time talking about, "man that's a long monologue.
@@alberth9418 you hope she pretends to enjoy the movies you like, you mean 🥴
my grandpa and steve martin were good friends while they were magicians in anaheim, CA i just found out. My dad passed away and he had old 8mm film of his dad and there was steve martin! :D
The part where John Candy suddenly becomes Satan will never cease to make me burst out laughing. To this day, if someone in traffic does something stupid as hell, I do that laugh to break up the tension.
"Just rent a car Steve" Because things are going to go so smoothly once that happens.
7:48 I want a gif from THAT reaction. That is absolutely perfect. Love your content, Natalie! Always happy to be here.
"I... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. Because I'm the genuine article. What you see is what you get."
"I don't have a home. Marie's been dead for eight years."
I've seen this movie more times than I can count, and those two scenes still make me break out into tears like Niagara Falls. This was one of Candy's finest performances, hands down. He was such a great actor with such an amazing body of work.
movies don't have good long monologues any longer because writers don't have an original thought in their head any longer, If you like John Candy watch Summer Rental
Please watch the following John Candy-movies :
-Uncle Buck
-The Great Outdoors
-Who's Harry Crumb ?
-Armed and Dangerous
-Only the Lonely
-Cool Runnings
glad i'm not the only one that looks back fondly at Armed and Dangerous
She's already been disappointed by two of his movies!
Delirious was good, too.
@@garretthenderson5738 I'm Pinkus, he's McCarthy.
Nothing But Trouble is severely underrated.
Steve Martin's character didn't pack light, remember the taxi that drove off with all his bags. :)
That’s the fastest I’ve ever clicked on anything!
Same, I love this movie or
He flew to Chicago because he's a traveling salesman.
Grew up watching a Christmas story
Love that movie! watch it every christmas
I live about 4 miles from the Christmas Story House in Cleveland. There is a line to get down that street around this time.
Great movie, I've always found it funny that A Christmas Story and Black Christmas were both directed by Bob Clark.
I bought that leg lamp for my dad one year for Christmas. Best gift reaction I've ever had. Now he asks me for a Red Ryder every year hahaha
Congrats...you're the only person I've seen in 30+ years who didn't cry at the end of this movie...and I'm not sure that's a good thing :/
She’s obnoxious
A lot of energy drinks died in making this video. A moment of silence please.
John candy was a master at emotional comedy, could literally have u laughing and crying in an instant, just a great actor
Though that could be more in America, not everyone reacts like that to mainstream comedy like that.
One of the best John Hughes movies ever!
*Train breaks down*
Natalie: "What are the odds?"
Murphy's Law: "100% when dealing with me". LOL
I miss John Candy ! ❤️R.I.P.❤️
SO glad you are checking out one of my favorite Classics! Happy Holidays!
Did her terrible reaction ruin it for you?
19:10
Just because you live somewhere doesn’t mean it’s a home, sometimes it just a place you have to be.
Being uncomfortable/anxious as opposed to sensitive/offended about something are different reactions. Look up confirmation bias....
"The world's mightiest heroes."
"Like Kevin Bacon?"
"Not him in this and X-Men : First Class, no."
Yeah that extra long meeting really screwed him. I mean ever see the end credit scene 🤣
I would definitely recommend LA Confidential.
" He's drunk. How does he know where we're going? " Is one of the best comedy lines ever written.
Candy is in Home Alone but a very small part. I totally forgot he was in it until someone mentioned it recently.
I enjoyed your fun commentary. This is one of my favorite comedies, the abrupt switch in the closing minutes was heartwarming.
You have a critical eye. I just go with the flow even if something doesn't make sense in real life.
I am so disappointed we didn't get to see your reaction to John Candy's response to Steve Martin's tirade. You talked right through it.
Little late to this reaction but she talked through a lot of scenes.
The part where Del squeezes his hat while Neal and his wife hug gets me every time.
I mean, can't have a holiday theme without Christmas Vacation...
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is my number one Holiday movie. Then, A Muppet Christmas Carol. Christmas isn't Christmas until I've watched both of those :D
Merry Christmas! Shitter was full
You're watching Planes Trains and Automobiles!!! AWESOME! Awwwwwwww!
Missed the perfect moment to add a freeze frame right after saying "If there's one thing I hate, it's a freeze frame."
I was hoping she'd end the video with a "Stay golden. Bye!" then freeze frame.
John Candy died at 43.
FOURTY THREE!!
The world was robbed of one of its brightest talents.
I loved him in everything he did, from SCTV to Canadian Bacon. 🥰😂🥰
Can you explain how you cry during Captain American and not during Planes Trains and Automobiles? Are you a robot?
John Candy was a Mog in "Spaceballs".He was half man, half dog.
He was his own best friend.
You should check out Uncle Buck. That's my favorite John Candy movie.
Yes!
This is one of my favorite films of all time. It never fails to make me cry in the exact same scene every time. RIP Mr. Candy.
Natalie please make the movie volume the same as your volume! I love your reactions anyway. Uncle Buck, Uncle Buck, Uncle Buck!
"the dog is missing teeth? how did they get the dog to do that?"
Natalie...you are adorable.
IT’S A MOVIE!!!!
These types of movies drive me nuts too Natalie. Thanks for the reaction to it though, I did really enjoy that! 😂
Btw, congrats on over 100k subs, I can't believe how fast your channel grew this year!!!
Omg so much love for this movie, you are the bestest! You have to watch Uncle Buck though.
Wow...I didn’t think anyone could suck the enjoyment out of this film. Congratulations.
Good movies if you want to experience more John Candy:
Uncle Buck
Brewster's Millions
Summer Rental
Stripes
The Great Outdoors is good, also written by John Hughes, but sadly not directed by him.
Wagon's East too.
Volunteers
Hahaha...OMG, your funnier than the movie lol. Freaking awesome reaction lol. I LOVED this movie growing up, but you made it heaps better. So cheers for that.😂👍
Such a feel good, funny and heart warming film.
@@Herovirtigo Ah, cool. Thanks for the info.
So?
Home Alone!! You’ll love it, and you’ll love John Candy in his little part.
You should watch Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie Murphy
Yes! I don’t think there are any reactions to that on RUclips.
Yes, and Trading places, Coming to America, and the Golden Child.
48 Hours!
I agree with the freeze frame sentiment up to a point, but Police Squad! really nailed them
Does it bother anyone else that cover art for Planes Trains and Automobiles has been changed to look like a Christmas movie? The photoshopped gift boxes and candy cane sign? Why can't a Thanksgiving movie be left a Thanksgiving movie?
Good point
It's for the international market. No idea why they use it for the US release though.
Miracle on 34 th street happens at Thanksgiving.
9:58 . . . The scenes with Gus‘s son are, in my opinion, the absolute best in the whole movie. It never fails to make me laugh so hard I cry.
The quintessential Christmas holiday movie is Die Hard. Fight me.
Any argument you can make also applies to The Shining.
@@Entertainzor who says Shining is a christmas movie ?
It was released in the summer so I don’t consider it a Christmas movie though I like it a lot and have seen it many times.
You are like my grandfather. His opinion is also very important when he's watching tv. From this day you will be my pretend grandfather.
For more John Candy, GOtta watch Uncle Buck
